Kevin Kelly on Privacy and Personalization

  • 0:03 - 0:07
    Absolute personalization requires
    absolute transparency.
  • 0:07 - 0:08
    There's a slider
  • 0:08 - 0:11
that connects those two coupled axes
  • 0:11 - 0:14
and technology gives us that option
  • 0:14 - 0:17
and we need to have that option
    to choose where we want
  • 0:18 - 0:21
but we can push it to when it's
    absolute personalization,
  • 0:21 - 0:23
    absolute transparency,
  • 0:23 - 0:24
    absolute privacy,
  • 0:24 - 0:27
    absolute generic averageness.
  • 0:27 - 0:30
The surprise is when people have that choice
  • 0:30 - 0:32
    they almost always push it
  • 0:32 - 0:35
    to the transparent personalization.
  • 0:35 - 0:39
So the way I summarize this
    is that vanity trumps privacy
  • 0:39 - 0:43
people when given the choice will push that
slider and say treat me as individual
  • 0:43 - 0:46
I am special, I am above average
  • 0:46 - 0:50
    and I will be transparent
    to facilitate that
  • 0:50 - 0:51
    so that's what's happening.
