0:01 - 0:04BONNIE: We prepare beginning teachers,
-
0:04 - 0:08because we then lose them to the schools where
they blossom. -
0:08 - 0:12WENDY: We have a lot of teachers out there,
who are doing great things. -
0:12 - 0:16But what Rebecca does is she puts a face to
those exciting, wonderful things. -
0:16 - 0:21PRESIDENT: She's got high expectations for
her seventh graders and for herself. -
0:21 - 0:23But she also knows that school can be fun.

0:23 - 0:26ANITA: She's able to connect with them, find
humor -
0:26 - 0:29that resonates with them,
-
0:29 - 0:32all while delivering an extremely rigorous
curriculum. -
0:32 - 0:36PRESIDENT: And that fits a personality that
she describes -
0:36 - 0:39as "a 12-year-old goofball dying to get out."

0:39 - 0:44BONNIE: What's happened with Rebecca is that
she's brought -
0:44 - 0:50all of her intelligence and dedication and
her caring about kids, -
0:50 - 0:53and she's really found her way in teaching.

0:53 - 0:59PRESIDENT: And, I have to say, she was a little
goofy when I met her. -

1:00 - 1:04NARRATOR: Alumna Rebecca Mieliwocki has received
local, state, -
1:04 - 1:08and national recognition for her innovative
approach to teaching. -
1:08 - 1:12A seventh grade English teacher at Luther
Burbank Middle School -
1:12 - 1:15for the past nine years and a teacher for
the past 16, -
1:15 - 1:18Rebecca fully engages her students in classroom
learning. -
1:18 - 1:21REPORTER: What's going on in kids these age,
-
1:21 - 1:25intellectually and physically, socially, that
makes them a tough group. -
1:25 - 1:28REBECCA: Oh my gosh, they're a party coming
and going. -
1:28 - 1:31I can't imagine a funner -- funner! A teacher
said 'funner!' -- -
1:31 - 1:34a more fun group of kids to teach.
-
1:34 - 1:39They have so much native energy and enthusiasm
about the world around them, -
1:39 - 1:42and it's my job to kind of harness that energy
and direct it -
1:42 - 1:44toward the things that I need them to learn.

1:44 - 1:51ANITA: I would go to visit, and then forget
that half an hour passed by. -
1:51 - 1:54I was enthralled with the art of her teaching.
-
1:54 - 1:57The seamless transitions, the scaffolding
to higher-level. -
1:57 - 2:02You're seeing an artist perf-- just an artist.
-
2:02 - 2:06NARRATOR: In 2012, she was recognized by President
Barack Obama -
2:06 - 2:09as the 62nd National Teacher of the Year
-
2:09 - 2:12in a ceremony at the White House, along with
her fellow -
2:12 - 2:14State Teachers of the Year.

2:14 - 2:16REBECCA: So teachers, I want to say to you,
-
2:16 - 2:21be passionate about your work and your students,
stay curious, -
2:21 - 2:24never stop learning, and bring the joy of
what you know into -
2:24 - 2:27your classrooms and share it with your students.

2:27 - 2:30Set the highest expectations for each and
every one of your students, -
2:30 - 2:35but do me a favor, and set an even higher
set of goals for yourself. -
2:35 - 2:38You are a hero to someone, and you may not
even know it. -
2:38 - 2:41NARRATOR: As part of her duties as National
Teacher of the Year, -
2:41 - 2:45Rebecca embarked on a year-long speaking tour,
sharing with educators -
2:45 - 2:48and others her passion for the classroom.

2:48 - 2:49MICHAEL: One of the things that, I think,
Rebecca -
2:49 - 2:52has done wonderfully, as she has traveled
internationally -- -
2:52 - 2:56she really gives out a recipe or a blueprint
for success -
2:56 - 2:57in American public education.

2:57 - 3:00REBECCA: If we want a transformation in education.
-
3:00 - 3:02If we truly want innovation and reform,
-
3:02 - 3:05we have got to stop talking about testing
and start talking -
3:05 - 3:10more about developing, supporting, and celebrating
teachers. -
3:10 - 3:13Teachers are the architects of the change
we've been waiting for. -
3:13 - 3:14(applause)

3:14 - 3:19MICHAEL: Just by virtue of her being named
the 2012 Teacher of the Year, -
3:19 - 3:23she automatically increases the equity and
the value of all the degrees -
3:23 - 3:27of all of our alums that are out there that
have received credentials -
3:27 - 3:29and received degrees from Cal State Northridge,
-
3:29 - 3:32because here's one amongst us who is one of
the best and the brightest, -
3:32 - 3:36and an amazing person changing people and
working with students -
3:36 - 3:38every day out there in the community.

3:38 - 3:40ELLEN: Well, we wanted to have you on the
show to tell you how much -
3:40 - 3:44we admire you and think that this is amazing
what you've accomplished, -
3:44 - 3:48but who better to tell you how they feel than
your students. Let's take a look. -
3:48 - 3:53STUDENT: Thank you Mrs. Mieliwocki for being
the inspiration that you are to my life. -
3:53 - 3:57Thank you for being a great teacher, always
being there for us, -
3:57 - 3:59not making class boring.

3:59 - 4:04Thank you for being an amazing teacher and
we love you. -
4:04 - 4:08BONNIE: Rebecca, all of the faculty in secondary
education -
4:08 - 4:11in the College are extremely proud of you,

4:11 - 4:16and you represents us really, really well.

and everybody who loves you, -
4:20 - 4:24and there's a lot of them, I'm so proud of
you. I'm so excited for you. -
4:24 - 4:28And maybe this will encourage you to up the
energy a little bit, -
4:28 - 4:33add a little humor for once, because you're
a little dry and boring, -
4:33 - 4:37but honey, you can get better! So, use this
to excite yourself -
