Distinguished Alumni Awards 2013: Rebecca Mieliwocki

  • 0:01 - 0:04
    BONNIE: We prepare beginning teachers,
  • 0:04 - 0:08
because we then lose them to the schools where
    they blossom.
  • 0:08 - 0:12
WENDY: We have a lot of teachers out there,
    who are doing great things.
  • 0:12 - 0:16
But what Rebecca does is she puts a face to
    those exciting, wonderful things.
  • 0:16 - 0:21
PRESIDENT: She's got high expectations for
her seventh graders and for herself.
  • 0:21 - 0:23
But she also knows that school can be fun.
  • 0:23 - 0:26
ANITA: She's able to connect with them, find
    humor
  • 0:26 - 0:29
    that resonates with them,
  • 0:29 - 0:32
all while delivering an extremely rigorous
    curriculum.
  • 0:32 - 0:36
PRESIDENT: And that fits a personality that
    she describes
  • 0:36 - 0:39
as "a 12-year-old goofball dying to get out."
  • 0:39 - 0:44
BONNIE: What's happened with Rebecca is that
    she's brought
  • 0:44 - 0:50
all of her intelligence and dedication and
    her caring about kids,
  • 0:50 - 0:53
and she's really found her way in teaching.
  • 0:53 - 0:59
PRESIDENT: And, I have to say, she was a little
    goofy when I met her.
  • 0:59 - 1:00
    (music)
  • 1:00 - 1:04
NARRATOR: Alumna Rebecca Mieliwocki has received
    local, state,
  • 1:04 - 1:08
and national recognition for her innovative
    approach to teaching.
  • 1:08 - 1:12
A seventh grade English teacher at Luther
    Burbank Middle School
  • 1:12 - 1:15
for the past nine years and a teacher for
    the past 16,
  • 1:15 - 1:18
Rebecca fully engages her students in classroom
    learning.
  • 1:18 - 1:21
REPORTER: What's going on in kids these age,
  • 1:21 - 1:25
    intellectually and physically, socially, that
    makes them a tough group.
  • 1:25 - 1:28
REBECCA: Oh my gosh, they're a party coming
    and going.
  • 1:28 - 1:31
    I can't imagine a funner -- funner! A teacher
    said 'funner!' --
  • 1:31 - 1:34
a more fun group of kids to teach.
  • 1:34 - 1:39
They have so much native energy and enthusiasm
    about the world around them,
  • 1:39 - 1:42
and it's my job to kind of harness that energy
    and direct it
  • 1:42 - 1:44
toward the things that I need them to learn.
  • 1:44 - 1:51
ANITA: I would go to visit, and then forget
that half an hour passed by.
  • 1:51 - 1:54
I was enthralled with the art of her teaching.
  • 1:54 - 1:57
    The seamless transitions, the scaffolding
    to higher-level.
  • 1:57 - 2:02
You're seeing an artist perf-- just an artist.
  • 2:02 - 2:06
NARRATOR: In 2012, she was recognized by President
    Barack Obama
  • 2:06 - 2:09
as the 62nd National Teacher of the Year
  • 2:09 - 2:12
in a ceremony at the White House, along with
    her fellow
  • 2:12 - 2:14
    State Teachers of the Year.
  • 2:14 - 2:16
REBECCA: So teachers, I want to say to you,
  • 2:16 - 2:21
be passionate about your work and your students,
    stay curious,
  • 2:21 - 2:24
never stop learning, and bring the joy of
    what you know into
  • 2:24 - 2:27
your classrooms and share it with your students.
  • 2:27 - 2:30
Set the highest expectations for each and
    every one of your students,
  • 2:30 - 2:35
but do me a favor, and set an even higher
    set of goals for yourself.
  • 2:35 - 2:38
You are a hero to someone, and you may not
    even know it.
  • 2:38 - 2:41
NARRATOR: As part of her duties as National
    Teacher of the Year,
  • 2:41 - 2:45
Rebecca embarked on a year-long speaking tour,
    sharing with educators
  • 2:45 - 2:48
and others her passion for the classroom.
  • 2:48 - 2:49
MICHAEL: One of the things that, I think,
    Rebecca
  • 2:49 - 2:52
has done wonderfully, as she has traveled
    internationally --
  • 2:52 - 2:56
she really gives out a recipe or a blueprint
    for success
  • 2:56 - 2:57
    in American public education.
  • 2:57 - 3:00
REBECCA: If we want a transformation in education.
  • 3:00 - 3:02
If we truly want innovation and reform,
  • 3:02 - 3:05
we have got to stop talking about testing
    and start talking
  • 3:05 - 3:10
more about developing, supporting, and celebrating
    teachers.
  • 3:10 - 3:13
Teachers are the architects of the change
    we've been waiting for.
  • 3:13 - 3:14
    (applause)
  • 3:14 - 3:19
MICHAEL: Just by virtue of her being named
the 2012 Teacher of the Year,
  • 3:19 - 3:23
she automatically increases the equity and
the value of all the degrees
  • 3:23 - 3:27
of all of our alums that are out there that
    have received credentials
  • 3:27 - 3:29
and received degrees from Cal State Northridge,
  • 3:29 - 3:32
because here's one amongst us who is one of
    the best and the brightest,
  • 3:32 - 3:36
and an amazing person changing people and
    working with students
  • 3:36 - 3:38
every day out there in the community.
  • 3:38 - 3:40
ELLEN: Well, we wanted to have you on the
show to tell you how much
  • 3:40 - 3:44
we admire you and think that this is amazing
    what you've accomplished,
  • 3:44 - 3:48
but who better to tell you how they feel than
your students. Let's take a look.
  • 3:48 - 3:53
STUDENT: Thank you Mrs. Mieliwocki for being
the inspiration that you are to my life.
  • 3:53 - 3:57
Thank you for being a great teacher, always
    being there for us,
  • 3:57 - 3:59
    not making class boring.

Thank you for being an amazing teacher and
    we love you.
  • 4:04 - 4:08

and you represents us really, really well.
    Thank you.
  • 4:16 - 4:20
WENDY: On behalf of everybody in book club
    and everybody who loves you,
  • 4:20 - 4:24
and there's a lot of them, I'm so proud of
you. I'm so excited for you.
  • 4:24 - 4:28
And maybe this will encourage you to up the
    energy a little bit,
  • 4:28 - 4:33
add a little humor for once, because you're
    a little dry and boring,
  • 4:33 - 4:37
but honey, you can get better! So, use this
    to excite yourself
  • 4:37 -
and excite others, for once. Love you, love
