- My name is Andrew Burnap
-
and I play Toby Darling
in "The Inheritance."
-
I would go to The Big
Apply Circus as a kid
-
and one day I got pulled into the show
-
to direct the band as like sort of a bit.
-
I remember feeling so
terrified and thrilled
-
at the same time and so I
started chasing that feeling,
-
but I remember thinking in that moment,
-
I wanna be able to make people feel
-
the way that I feel right now.
-
I don't think I could
articulate it at the time
-
but it was a sort of
this spark of being like,
-
I wanna be able to
create things like that.
-
To do that to people.
-
Musical theater was my
first deep, deep love.
-
I would watch "Oliver" over
and over and over again
-
and also "The Wizard of Oz."
-
I mean, Burt Lahr, I would
be running around the house
-
doing Burt Lahr impressions.
-
Anything that Stephen Sondheim
wrote is one of the most
-
profound gifts to an actor
who loves musical theater.
-
I can't remember for the life of me
-
what the first class was,
but I do remember thinking
-
I had full-on imposter syndrome.
-
Like, oh these people are all real.
-
They really deserve to be
here and I tricked everybody
-
and then through my journey
there it was about owning
-
the fact that no one is actually like me,
-
just like no one is actually like them.
-
To put it into three words maybe,
-
it was amazing, horrifying, overwhelming.
-
I love organizing.
-
Organizing is the most fun
I think I've had in my like,
-
trying to be an adult.
-
I look at pictures of
closets on Instagram,
-
it gives me so much joy and
I like like folding clothes
-
and stuff cause it feels
-
like I'm organizing my mind in a way.
-
In this rehearsal process specifically,
-
everything is seems to
be so crazy sometimes,
-
it just makes me feel
like I have some sort
-
of control over my life.
-
Toby Darling, how do I describe him?
-
When I first really met Toby
-
was when I got to play him
in the week-long workshop
-
when I was fully face-to-face with him
-
and sort of found out things about him
-
that I didn't realize were
there just from reading it.
-
He's sort of this beautiful lost boy.
-
Toby loves to party, he loves to,
-
his love of language, we share definitely.
-
I think in the way that we
both seize the day if you will,
-
we're similar and then
we start to branch off
-
as the story progresses.
