Obama announces expanded sanctions on Russia in response to Crimea referendum

President Barack Obama announced Monday at the White House, that he plans to impose sanctions on specific individuals who have undermined the sovereignty of Ukraine, including Russian officials.

"The referendum in Crimea was in clear violation of Ukrainian and international law and will not be recognized by the international community," Obama said in response to a referendum to determine if Crimea would secede from Ukraine and become part of Russia.

The president warned that "continued Russian military intervention in Ukraine will only deepen Russia's diplomatic isolation and exact a greater toll on the Russian economy."
