My secret dog inside Attica prison | Michael Rhynes | TEDxAttica

  • 0:05 - 0:09
    By a show of hands,
how many of you are pet lovers?
  • 0:13 - 0:15
How many of you are dog lovers?
  • 0:15 - 0:17
    (Cheers)
  • 0:18 - 0:21
How many of you have had
a hard and frustrating day at the job
  • 0:21 - 0:24
and couldn't wait to get home?
  • 0:24 - 0:27
    (Laughter)
  • 0:29 - 0:31
Putting your key in the door,
  • 0:31 - 0:34
you are greeted by your best friend
  • 0:34 - 0:38
    with loving eyes
and a quizzical tilt of the head
  • 0:38 - 0:40
    to discern your mood.
  • 0:40 - 0:44
    Once your friend has determined
    that you need cheering up,
  • 0:44 - 0:48
    his tongue comes out,
    he jumps up and down
  • 0:48 - 0:52
    and wags his tail,
    signaling that you are loved
  • 0:52 - 0:54
no matter what kind of day you've had.
  • 0:56 - 1:00
I'm not allowed to have a dog.
  • 1:04 - 1:06
    Can you keep a secret?
  • 1:07 - 1:09
    (Laughter)
  • 1:10 - 1:12
    I have a dog.
  • 1:12 - 1:13
    (Laughter)
  • 1:14 - 1:18
After a hard and frustrating day
    at my program assignment,
  • 1:18 - 1:20
I head back to the cell.
  • 1:21 - 1:23
    The gate is cracked,
  • 1:24 - 1:27
and there my best friend is.
  • 1:33 - 1:34
    (Panting)
  • 1:34 - 1:36
    Down boy.
  • 1:38 - 1:39
    (Laughter)
  • 1:40 - 1:43
    (Applause)
  • 1:45 - 1:47
    How many of you believe
  • 1:47 - 1:50
    that global warming
    is affecting our environment?
  • 1:52 - 1:56
What if climate change is more personal
  • 1:56 - 1:58
    than we imagined?
  • 1:58 - 2:00
    Ponder this.
  • 2:00 - 2:03
    With the summers getting
    hotter and hotter,
  • 2:03 - 2:06
    everyone is trying to find
    ways to cool off.
  • 2:06 - 2:08
    Some of us retreat to beaches;
  • 2:08 - 2:11
some of us retreat to backyard pools.
  • 2:11 - 2:15
Most urban kids turn on fire hydrants.
  • 2:23 - 2:26
When my blood begins to simmer,
  • 2:27 - 2:31
    and my body rages,
  • 2:31 - 2:36
    my temperature reaches
    a level of Farenheit 451.
  • 2:38 - 2:42
    My fight and flight response
    is stuck on fight.
  • 2:47 - 2:50
I retreat to the pond in my cell,
  • 2:50 - 2:52
    where the water is serene
  • 2:52 - 2:54
    and clear as a bell.
  • 2:55 - 2:57
There are frogs on lily pads
  • 2:58 - 3:01
and cattails swaying in the breeze.
  • 3:02 - 3:04
    Fish playing tag,
  • 3:04 - 3:06
    and tadpoles playing leapfrog.
  • 3:06 - 3:08
    The sun is shining.
  • 3:09 - 3:11
    The birds are chirping.
  • 3:11 - 3:13
    Squirrels are playing,
  • 3:13 - 3:15
    and butterflies are flirting.
  • 3:15 - 3:17
    And there's a duck.
  • 3:17 - 3:21
    Quack, quack, quack,
    quack, quack, quack, quack.
  • 3:23 - 3:24
    Oh yeah.
  • 3:24 - 3:27
And my dog is over there
    sunning himself.
  • 3:28 - 3:29
    (Laughter)
  • 3:32 - 3:34
    Instead of plunging in,
  • 3:34 - 3:36
    I stick my toe in.
  • 3:36 - 3:38
    Ooh la la, that's cold.
  • 3:38 - 3:41
    (Laughter)
  • 3:42 - 3:44
    So, I wade in.
  • 4:00 - 4:04
    Through the use of imagination,
    acting, and yoga,
  • 4:05 - 4:06
    and qi gong,
  • 4:07 - 4:09
I've found a way to recover
  • 4:09 - 4:12
    from the traumatic experience
    that is prison.
  • 4:12 - 4:13
    Thank you.
  • 4:13 - 4:16
    (Applause) (Cheers)
