The Dmin Chord (Guitar Lesson BC-123) Guitar for beginners Stage 2
-
0:09 - 0:13Hey, how're you doing? Justin here again, coming at you
-
0:13 - 0:15this time for a D minor.
-
0:15 - 0:18Now, the other two minors were pretty easy:
the A minor was -
0:18 - 0:21very similar to an E
and an E minor was an E with a finger lifted off. -
0:21 - 0:24So, D going to be really simple as well?
-
0:24 - 0:25Do I get into this D minor?
-
0:25 - 0:28Unfortunately not. It's not a particularly hard chord,
-
0:28 - 0:31it's not the big dreaded F chord that everyone dislikes.
-
0:31 - 0:35But it requires a little bit of a kind of awkward
-
0:35 - 0:37finger stretch for some people.
-
0:37 - 0:38I didn't find this one too bad,
-
0:38 - 0:40I had a lot more trouble with G chord
when I was learning guitar. -
0:40 - 0:43But a lot of people struggle with Dmin.
-
0:43 - 0:45So I'm going to show you a couple of
little variations around it as well. -
0:45 - 0:49So, let's go to a close-up and check out this new chord.
-
0:52 - 0:56Okay, here we are, looking at the D minor.
Now, doesn't look too bad, does it? -
0:56 - 0:57I know what you're thinking. You're thinking
-
0:57 - 0:59"Justin just said it was going to be a bit difficult and that
-
0:59 - 1:02doesn't look that hard".
-
1:02 - 1:04Well, it is that hard.
-
1:04 - 1:05Now, you can see here,
-
1:05 - 1:05the third finger has got to stretch
-
1:05 - 1:07and it's fingers one, two and three.
-
1:07 - 1:11Now, for a lot of people, that's a little bit difficult.
-
1:11 - 1:15I don't find it that hard now, and some people find that they angle their fingers a little bit like that,
-
1:15 - 1:16which is kind of okay,
-
1:16 - 1:20but I think you're better off trying to get it a little bit squarer on this one, for now.
-
1:21 - 1:24So what we've got here, let's start off with the usual:
-
1:24 - 1:26first finger, first string, first fret.
-
1:26 - 1:30Second finger, second fret, third string,
-
1:30 - 1:33and third finger has to move, you can see there, just the
-
1:33 - 1:36way my fingers had to go from here and then go out,
-
1:36 - 1:38it's going to the third fret of the second string.
-
1:38 - 1:43And it's that third finger that causes a lot of people problems, trying to play this chord.
-
1:43 - 1:45If that's you and you really struggle with this chord,
-
1:45 - 1:49the other fingering option is to use the fourth finger.
-
1:49 - 1:51Which I must admit that was the way I played Dm
-
1:51 - 1:54for a long time, using fingers one, two and four.
-
1:55 - 1:57It really doesn't make very much difference whether
-
1:57 - 2:02you use your third or your fourth.
I prefer using my third these days, -
2:02 - 2:05mainly because I can use a little chord trick called a suspended chord.
-
2:05 - 2:07In a slightly more advanced lesson.
-
2:07 - 2:09So I think fingers one, two and three are better,
-
2:09 - 2:13if you can stretch it.
But if you can't, you can always go for whacking -
2:13 - 2:15the old fourth finger down there.
-
2:15 - 2:17Now, when it comes to playing it,
-
2:17 - 2:20of course if you look at the chord diagram,
-
2:20 - 2:24you'll notice that you shouldn't touch the
thickest two strings. -
2:24 - 2:26So starting at the fourth string, you should do your strum
-
2:26 - 2:28. . .
-
2:28 - 2:29pick out the notes one at a time
-
2:29 - 2:31. . .
-
2:31 - 2:33Those three should be pretty straight forward,
-
2:33 - 2:34. . .
-
2:34 - 2:36It's usually this last note, the thinnest string,
-
2:36 - 2:38it just sounds like this for people:
-
2:38 - 2:40. . .
-
2:40 - 2:43And all again, it's the third finger lying down too much.
-
2:43 - 2:45As soon as you lift it back up a little bit,
-
2:45 - 2:47. . .
-
2:47 - 2:49You'll find that that's what'll give you that nice roundness
-
2:49 - 2:52in your fingers and it'll allow you to get that note.
-
2:52 - 2:54Which is the note F, actually.
-
2:54 - 2:56. . .
-
2:56 - 2:58Here, on your D minor chord.
-
2:59 - 3:01It is a really, really good chord, D minor,
-
3:01 - 3:03and even if it does feel a little bit stretchy,
-
3:03 - 3:05nearly everything that you do that's new,
-
3:05 - 3:08that's a little bit hard is going to be stretchy.
-
3:08 - 3:09And it's just a matter of getting used to it.
-
3:09 - 3:12Especially for the next stage, we've got G and C,
-
3:12 - 3:14which are again, even stretchier.
-
3:14 - 3:16But one thing that can help with these chords
-
3:16 - 3:17that have got a little bit of a stretch
-
3:17 - 3:20is to think to rotate your hand outwards.
-
3:20 - 3:22So if you've got your hand flat like this,
-
3:22 - 3:24is to think of your thumb down toward the ground,
-
3:24 - 3:26so as you're doing it,
-
3:26 - 3:28try and think that you're pushing this part of your hand
-
3:28 - 3:30up toward the guitar neck a bit more.
-
3:30 - 3:32That can often help with the stretch.
-
3:32 - 3:34If it's too long like this, feels a bit too,
-
3:34 - 3:37see your third finger is going to be a bit long there,
-
3:37 - 3:38so by doing that,
-
3:38 - 3:40it helps curl up those fingers
-
3:40 - 3:42and gets them in a good position.
-
3:42 - 3:44So, that might be something to think about there as well.
-
3:44 - 3:46So, have fun with your D minor.
-
3:46 - 3:48Now we're going to try to put them together.
