Landslides in south Wales leave locals fearing 'another Aberfan' | ITV News

  • Not Synced
    [Roaring, rushing noises]
  • Not Synced
    People: Whoa. Whoa. That's bad.
  • Not Synced
    [Announcer] It's Sunday, and
the side of a mountain has just collapsed.
  • Not Synced
It crashes through the river that
  • Not Synced
    runs through the Rhondda Var,
    near [?] town.
  • Not Synced
    Nobody is injured, but
    it's only today
  • Not Synced
the sheer scale of that collapse
    is obvious.
  • Not Synced
    Something else that is clear
  • Not Synced
    is the amount of coal
  • Not Synced
    that was still
    on this mountainside.
  • Not Synced
    Gerald watched it all happen.
  • Not Synced
    [Gerald] There was a roar,
  • Not Synced
and you could see the muck
slip from the top area, there.
  • Not Synced
    Within a couple of hours,
the whole lot had come down there.
  • Not Synced
    [Announcer] Do you feel vulnerable?
  • Not Synced
    [Gerald] Yeah. Yeah.
    With this going on, yeah.
  • Not Synced
These valleys are surrounded by coal.
  • Not Synced
    They were built on coal.
  • Not Synced
    It's a frightening prospect,
    you know.
  • Not Synced
    If that could've happened
  • Not Synced
on this side of the mountain,
  • Not Synced
it would be a totally different outcome.
  • Not Synced
    [Announcer] His father Cliff
    is a former miner.
  • Not Synced
You look at this landslide now,
    what goes through your mind?
  • Not Synced
    [Mr. Durham] Aberfan.
  • Not Synced
    Believe me, we don't want
    to see that again.
  • Not Synced
    I wouldn't.
  • Not Synced
    [Announcer] I've been
    speaking to people
  • Not Synced
    on this street.
  • Not Synced
    It's Bryn Hailog, and it's
    opposite to the landslide.
  • Not Synced
    They described yesterday as eerie.
  • Not Synced
    The sound of slurry
    crashing down the mountain.
  • Not Synced
    They are just thankful
    that this happened
  • Not Synced
    in front of their homes,
  • Not Synced
    not behind them.
  • Not Synced
    The greenery of the valleys
  • Not Synced
    disguises the amount of coal
    that is still hidden here.
  • Not Synced
    In the 1970s, 80s and 90s,
  • Not Synced
    the land was reclaimed.
  • Not Synced
    But now, there are calls
    by local people,
  • Not Synced
    to inspect all the areas
    where coal was dumped.
  • Not Synced
    [Chris Bryant] We should definitely
  • Not Synced
    be inspecting all the former
    coal tips.
  • Not Synced
    Making sure that if
there is excessive water in there,
  • Not Synced
that that is being drained off,
  • Not Synced
    make sure everything is safe.
  • Not Synced
    Because obviously, people
    have seen the horrific pictures
  • Not Synced
    on television news, of
    what's happened in Ponte Guy.
  • Not Synced
People might not have seen it
    for themselves.
  • Not Synced
    It is much bigger than
    it looked on television.
  • Not Synced
So, people are, of course, worried.
  • Not Synced
It is one thing, having water coming,
  • Not Synced
    coursing through your house.
  • Not Synced
It is quite another, having, um,
  • Not Synced
slurry, and the top of the mountain
  • Not Synced
    coming down through your house.
  • Not Synced
    [Announcer] But, who is responsible?
  • Not Synced
    Who owns the land?
  • Not Synced
    The Coal Authority says,
    it's not them.
  • Not Synced
    The Councils say,
  • Not Synced
they're not sure if they do.
  • Not Synced
Who is responsible for these sites,
  • Not Synced
    and who is maintaining them?
  • Not Synced
    [Andrew Morgan] At present,
  • Not Synced
    we are in discussion with
  • Not Synced
    Natural Resources, Wales.
  • Not Synced
Clears on the side of the hill.
  • Not Synced
    It is the big one.
  • Not Synced
Rhondda Var is a concern to us.
  • Not Synced
We have engineers on site right now,
  • Not Synced
    monitoring it.
  • Not Synced
[Announcer] Do you think that is
    your land,
  • Not Synced
    or Natural Resources Wales' land?
  • Not Synced
[Mr. Morgan] We are still in discussion
    over that.
  • Not Synced
    Um, but at present,
    we have engineers on site,
  • Not Synced
    trying to understand
    if there is a risk
  • Not Synced
to the properties, or the public.
  • Not Synced
    Certainly there is some concern
  • Not Synced
    about the moment that happened
    yesterday,
  • Not Synced
    and what's caused it.
  • Not Synced
Is it just water on the surface,
  • Not Synced
or is there a deeper issue
    within the mountain?
  • Not Synced
    That is currently under investigation.
  • Not Synced
    [Rushing noises.]
  • Not Synced
    [Announcer] This is what happened
  • Not Synced
after a weekend of heavy rain.
  • Not Synced
These valleys know all too well
  • Not Synced
    of the histories with landslides.
  • Not Synced
    Now, some are questioning
  • Not Synced
    whether this was a one-off,
  • Not Synced
    or an early warning.
  • Not Synced
