Syria update
-
0:00 - 0:03Well, in Syria, the president there has promised
-
0:03 - 0:06to consider reforms after a week of violent protest
-
0:06 - 0:07in the southern city of Daraa
-
0:07 - 0:10But that hasn't stopped protesters, who have called
-
0:10 - 0:13for country-wide demonstrations on Friday
-
0:13 - 0:15Thousands of the people were on the streets on Thursday
-
0:15 - 0:18to mourn people they say were shot during
-
0:18 - 0:19the government's crackdown.
-
0:19 - 0:22There are reports that Bashar al-Assad will speak to the nation
-
0:22 - 0:24within the next few hours to try
-
0:24 - 0:25to calm the situtation.
-
0:25 - 0:28Rula Amin joins me now from Damascus.
-
0:28 - 0:33Rula, as we say, the president expected to address
-
0:33 - 0:36his population. He has offered some quite substantial
-
0:36 - 0:38concessions, but they don't seem to be—
-
0:38 - 0:41or we don't know yet
-
0:41 - 0:42—whether they're going to have an impact
-
0:42 - 0:45on the day's protests.
-
0:45 - 0:48Yes, it remains to be seen. However, we did speak
-
0:48 - 0:50to many Syrians, including the people in Daraa.
-
0:50 - 0:53And, the response to these measures is mixed.
-
0:53 - 0:56Now, the activists, and the hardcore opposition activists
-
0:56 - 0:57are very skeptical
-
0:57 - 1:00and they say these are just lip service, and
-
1:00 - 1:03won't change much. Others do give the president
-
1:03 - 1:05the benefit of the doubt, and they say this
-
1:05 - 1:07is a good start. Let's give him some time.
-
1:07 - 1:09Maybe it will materialize.
-
1:09 - 1:10And, maybe there will be change in Syria
-
1:10 - 1:13without having, or forcing the people
-
1:13 - 1:15to go into the street.
-
1:15 - 1:17We have to remember, the protests have been
-
1:17 - 1:20confined to Daraa despite seven days
-
1:20 - 1:23of very strong clashes, where dozens were killed.
-
1:23 - 1:26The capital remained quiet,
-
1:26 - 1:28and so have the rest of the Syrian towns.
-
1:28 - 1:30Now, today, it's going to be a challenge
-
1:30 - 1:34and a test, both for the activists and the opposition, and the government.
-
1:34 - 1:37If the people take to the streets in other towns,
-
1:37 - 1:39maybe the concessions are too late.
-
1:39 - 1:42If they don't, it means the president has managed
-
1:42 - 1:44to contain the crisis in Daraa,
-
1:44 - 1:46and that some of the people, some Syrians at least
-
1:46 - 1:49have bought his line, and are giving him time
-
1:49 - 1:52and putting some faith in these new measures.
-
1:52 - 1:56But, the fact that the measures have been offered
-
1:56 - 1:58at all Rula, to put this into context for us,
-
1:58 - 2:00how surprising is that, given that this is a regime
-
2:00 - 2:04which has a history of heavy handed brutal crackdowns
-
2:04 - 2:07on any kind of uprising?
-
2:07 - 2:11Yes, six months ago, nobody would have dreamt
-
2:11 - 2:13that these kinds of concessions would have
-
2:13 - 2:15been made in Syria, but by a month ago it seemed
-
2:15 - 2:17very logical.
-
2:17 - 2:19Now, I arrived here on Sunday, and the minute
-
2:19 - 2:22I arrived, it was obvious that both the people
-
2:22 - 2:23the Syrian people and the government
-
2:23 - 2:26realize that change is coming to Syria,
-
2:26 - 2:27and the government knows it cannot continue
-
2:27 - 2:29with its old ways.
-
2:29 - 2:30And, the president had made it clear
-
2:30 - 2:33he understands the need to reform
-
2:33 - 2:35and he will do it.
-
2:35 - 2:37The people want it now, they want it serious
-
2:37 - 2:40they want it meaningful, and they don't want to wait.
-
2:40 - 2:42And, there's a race with time.
-
2:42 - 2:44Now, some people believe that the president
-
2:44 - 2:46himself wants to change, but he is surrounded by
-
2:46 - 2:50a group of people, or the system itself,
-
2:50 - 2:52that's not allowing him to do what he wants to do.
-
2:52 - 2:55This is kind of giving him the benefit of the doubt.
-
2:55 - 2:58The protest in Syria, in Daraa, added more
-
2:58 - 3:01pressure on the government, and made the government
-
3:01 - 3:03feel that it's very urgent to act now
-
3:03 - 3:05before it's too late.
-
3:05 - 3:07So, for now, it seems the president is keen
-
3:07 - 3:09to contain the crisis in Syria
-
3:09 - 3:10and he's determined.
-
3:10 - 3:12People want to make sure he's also determined
-
3:12 - 3:15to bring change to Syria, not just to contain the crisis.
-
3:15 - 3:17And, of course, we will be following
-
3:17 - 3:19the developments there with you Rula.
-
3:19 - 3:22Thanks very much indeed, for now Rulla, in Damascus.
