    probably more active and the polyglot

    workshops and polyglot conference which

    I'm sure some of you in the room may

    have heard of and but my story today

    about learning language is a native
  • 1:29 - 1:34
    English speaker that doesn't actually
  • 1:31 - 1:38
    just hold true for speakers of English
  • 1:34 - 1:40
    as a native language it actually goes
  • 1:38 - 1:43
    beyond the borders of other countries as
  • 1:40 - 1:45
    well where there's a dominant single
  • 1:43 - 1:47
    language and they don't tend to learn
  • 1:45 - 1:50
    many of the languages or any of the
  • 1:47 - 1:53
    languages so hopefully they'll be
  • 1:50 - 1:55
    relevance in this for other people the
  • 1:53 - 1:58
    idea and the goal for me is to actually
  • 1:55 - 2:01
    explain some of the difficulties in
  • 1:58 - 2:03
    learning languages for people from these
  • 2:01 - 2:04
    countries particularly from my
  • 2:03 - 2:06
    experience as a native English speaker
  • 2:04 - 2:10
    that from the United Kingdom
  • 2:06 - 2:13
    and I hope that it will help to make
  • 2:10 - 2:16
    people and/or understand and be more
  • 2:13 - 2:19
    aware of of those difficulties so they

    can help language learners when they're

    speaking to them

    so that's the the goal for me for this

    talk but let me just demonstrate what I

    mean by this not being true just for

    native English speakers and for other

    people with a little story so a Spanish

    man walks into a clothes shop in London

    and he goes he wants to buy some socks

    so he walks in he says I'll allow one at

    forward he's from the south of Spain and

    then the shopkeeper looks for in case

    speaks many languages what we call them

    to learn language why why is that a

    problem well through this presentation I

    wanted to discuss the following things

    grammar vocab accent pronunciation
  • 5:16 - 5:23
    practice picking a language oops and
  • 5:21 - 5:24
    we'll start with grammar but let's just
  • 5:23 - 5:29
    look through that quickly
  • 5:24 - 5:31
    whoa so these are all aspects of what
  • 5:29 - 5:32
    makes it difficult and as I say this
  • 5:31 - 5:34
    applies not just to native English
  • 5:32 - 5:36
    speakers but to other people as well
  • 5:34 - 5:39
    people who are native speakers of other
  • 5:36 - 5:41
    languages but why why is this problem
  • 5:39 - 5:44
    well from my point of view speaking as a
  • 5:41 - 5:46
    native English speaker born and raised
  • 5:44 - 5:46
    in the United Kingdom
  • 5:46 - 5:52
    grama is a problem because in English we
  • 5:49 - 5:54
    don't have gender in the same way as we
  • 5:52 - 5:58
    do in other languages so when you get to
  • 5:54 - 6:00
    Loula in French lessons and people say

    the wrong gender and then you get to
  • 6:00 - 6:06
    German you think okay I've cracked this
  • 6:01 - 6:09
    gender with French okay it's lawful as
  • 6:06 - 6:10
    you see nota an old form yep a problema

    duh skinned vow home why is it neuter

    why is it then change gender in German
  • 6:16 - 6:20
    all of this is kind of weird for native
  • 6:19 - 6:21
    English speakers and you often hear that

    they'll make mistakes with the gender
  • 6:21 - 6:27
    because it's for this reason but this
  • 6:24 - 6:29
    also applies to finish speakers to
  • 6:27 - 6:33
    Turkish speakers who don't have gender
  • 6:29 - 6:36
    as well in their languages verbs
  • 6:33 - 6:38
    English speakers fluff the verbs that
  • 6:36 - 6:40
    they already have and they don't change
  • 6:38 - 6:44
    that much anyway and through the the
  • 6:40 - 6:49
    pronoun so you know I see you see he
  • 6:44 - 6:51
    sees oh wow big change but you know then
  • 6:49 - 6:55
    you get to some of the Latin languages
  • 6:51 - 6:56
    and the changes are huge they are
  • 6:55 - 7:03
    there's beer very much
  • 6:56 - 7:07
    etc etc etc in case oh I love the
  • 7:03 - 7:12
    reaction in the roof who likes cases you
  • 7:07 - 7:15
    sick sick sick individuals seriously

    there is something we can do for you

    went to university in the UK I went to

    study languages so who here thinks that

    language students tend to be quite good

    at grammatical terminology and what
  • 7:38 - 7:44
    things mean and getting nods you see
  • 7:42 - 7:45
    it's the wrong audience for these things
  • 7:44 - 7:48
    people going yeah definitely they're all
  • 7:45 - 7:50
    fantastic one of the first things that
  • 7:48 - 7:54
    they did is took us all aside and said
  • 7:50 - 7:56
    ok we need to teach you English grammar
  • 7:54 - 7:58
    because you don't get taught it in the
  • 7:56 - 8:00
    school in the UK you're not taught
  • 7:58 - 8:02
    English grammar in the same way as you
  • 8:00 - 8:04
    you're taught French grammar or German
  • 8:02 - 8:06
    grammar so often you have a better
  • 8:04 - 8:09
    understanding of of a foreign languages
  • 8:06 - 8:12
    grammar than you will of your own but
  • 8:09 - 8:14
    that isn't that actually is is it is a
  • 8:12 - 8:16
    problem because when you get to things
  • 8:14 - 8:19
    like cases if you don't know what a
  • 8:16 - 8:22
    direct object is then the accusative
  • 8:19 - 8:25
    sounds really strange or an indirect
  • 8:22 - 8:29
    object or who here is taught and what a
  • 8:25 - 8:31
    verb is by saying it's a doing word what
  • 8:29 - 8:34
    does that mean
  • 8:31 - 8:38
    none of these or nouns and naming word
  • 8:34 - 8:39
    ok and then you give a few examples that
  • 8:38 - 8:42
    you need to write down in a test right
  • 8:39 - 8:49
    that's it then you get to the vocabulary
  • 8:42 - 8:50
    and it's vast it's often exotic unless
  • 8:49 - 8:55
    you're talking about French and then
  • 8:50 - 8:56
    it's basically 60% of English ok and
  • 8:55 - 8:59
    this is my picture that I took in

    an attention [ __ ] that's terrible but

    it there the idea is the vastness you

    get me yet the imagery right but it is

    its vast I mean if you look at language

    and who has had people come up to you
  • 9:13 - 9:19
    say ok I speak French or I speak German
  • 9:14 - 9:22
    they go oh so you know everything right

    I get that all the time so so what's the
  • 9:22 - 9:27
    word for this and then they'd like to
  • 9:24 - 9:28
    test you so you can translate it but
  • 9:27 - 9:29
    actually what they don't realize and
  • 9:28 - 9:31
    what you don't realize yourself as a
  • 9:29 - 9:33
    native speaker of a language is that
  • 9:31 - 9:35
    sometimes what you need to do is a sort
  • 9:33 - 9:38
    of a mind flip when you talk about
  • 9:35 - 9:39
    vocabulary so you don't always have the
  • 9:38 - 9:40
    words in the language that you're
  • 9:39 - 9:43
    learning or language you're speaking
  • 9:40 - 9:45
    just to give you an example I live in
  • 9:43 - 9:48
    the Republic of Macedonia Macedonian is
  • 9:45 - 9:52
    my home language but there's no word for
  • 9:48 - 9:55
    bookmark they sell them they have them
  • 9:52 - 9:58
    but there's no real word that people
  • 9:55 - 10:02
    that use for bookmark there's no real
  • 9:58 - 10:04
    word that everybody uses for chives
  • 10:02 - 10:06
    there are these kind of bits of
  • 10:04 - 10:09
    vocabulary that you want to say and then
  • 10:06 - 10:13
    you don't really have a word so you have
  • 10:09 - 10:15
    to bend your mind to express things in a
  • 10:13 - 10:18
    way that the natives will understand and
  • 10:15 - 10:20
    that is one of the big stumbling blocks
  • 10:18 - 10:22
    for native English speakers because
  • 10:20 - 10:25
    we're used to dominating with exact
  • 10:22 - 10:26
    precision what we want to say and how we
  • 10:25 - 10:30
    want to say it and you can't always do
  • 10:26 - 10:34
    it the exotic thing relates to the
  • 10:30 - 10:36
    sounds or how the word is made and and
  • 10:34 - 10:37
    and whether it trips off the tongue
  • 10:36 - 10:39
    whether it's easy to pronounce it can
  • 10:37 - 10:41
    just sound weird to native English
  • 10:39 - 10:44
    speakers and it can be confusing because
  • 10:41 - 10:47
    sometimes very small change
  • 10:44 - 10:48
    in a word means something completely
  • 10:47 - 10:51
    different
  • 10:48 - 10:52
    there's anyone got any good examples of
  • 10:51 - 10:54
    words that they've heard there's a word
  • 10:52 - 10:56
    for Cheers in Hungarian and a word that
  • 10:54 - 11:01
    means something very different that's
  • 10:56 - 11:04
    very close yes what is it come over and
  • 11:01 - 11:06
    speak a con come on I take I take active

    volunteers you can come up you've just

    me on to accent to pronunciation so

    especially for native English speakers

    but also again for other speakers of

    other languages this is true and there's

    kind of a sounding weird saying these
  • 12:11 - 12:16
    things like saying these weird sounds
  • 12:13 - 12:19
    that you sound it sounds a bit strange
  • 12:16 - 12:20
    and to go and get it into the right word
  • 12:19 - 12:23
    at the right time and then not
  • 12:20 - 12:26
    overcompensate and say Mel C book you is
  • 12:23 - 12:29
    not always easy for for a native English
  • 12:26 - 12:32
    speaker because they don't always relate
  • 12:29 - 12:35
    to okay how do I actually use this and
  • 12:32 - 12:36
    make it sound normal and then when
  • 12:35 - 12:38
    you're in a classroom environment
  • 12:36 - 12:41
    especially at school you can be seen as
  • 12:38 - 12:43
    putting on the talk so if you're the
  • 12:41 - 12:45
    only child well where I grew up there's
  • 12:43 - 12:47
    kind of a mix of accents but if you
  • 12:45 - 12:49
    imagine a school in Liverpool with a
  • 12:47 - 12:52
    learning French and they say yeah
  • 12:49 - 12:54
    bonjour je m'appelle Richards and just
  • 12:52 - 12:58
    SWE's to Liverpool
  • 12:54 - 12:59
    your pal fronts area beyond and I've
  • 12:58 - 13:01
    just gone over to Yorkshire by the way
  • 12:59 - 13:03
    sorry but then the point is you've got
  • 13:01 - 13:05
    this local accent and then you're the
  • 13:03 - 13:08
    only kid that goes boardroom a perfect
  • 13:05 - 13:10
    shot and the other kids can start
  • 13:08 - 13:12
    laughing at you because they think oh my
  • 13:10 - 13:15
    god what are you doing it's it's like
  • 13:12 - 13:18
    you're giving up your identity so when I
  • 13:15 - 13:18
    talk about prestige accents and keeping
  • 13:18 - 13:21
    your identity
  • 13:18 - 13:23
    it doesn't mean you sound posh and you
  • 13:21 - 13:25
    sounds sort of all highfalutin in your
  • 13:23 - 13:27
    language what it actually refers to is
  • 13:25 - 13:30
    the group language the pack language and
  • 13:27 - 13:32
    that is the accent and that's the
  • 13:30 - 13:34
    vocabulary that you use so as soon as
  • 13:32 - 13:37
    you move away from that especially in a
  • 13:34 - 13:40
    language society like the English
  • 13:37 - 13:42
    language in the world where we very much
  • 13:40 - 13:46
    judge people on their accents from the
  • 13:42 - 13:48
    standard to where they're from it can
  • 13:46 - 13:51
    take you away from that group and it can
  • 13:48 - 13:52
    it can make you feel isolated or people
  • 13:51 - 13:55
    can make you feel isolated because of it
  • 13:52 - 13:59
    so sometimes it's a badge that you wear
  • 13:55 - 14:01
    with pride this strong accent and you
  • 13:59 - 14:04
    think it's fun to do it especially as
  • 14:01 - 14:07
    kids when we will learn the numbers in
  • 14:04 - 14:09
    French I remember I had to go through
  • 14:07 - 14:11
    the basics of French even though I'd
  • 14:09 - 14:13
    studied it as a smaller child I had to
  • 14:11 - 14:15
    go through it with with my peers and
  • 14:13 - 14:18
    they were they got through the numbers
  • 14:15 - 14:23
    and they were going on dicks twice,
  • 14:18 - 14:23

    still is actually my mum came over to

    into this really weird mindset if I

    don't see the natural English link

    always straight away so who here knows

    polish okay so it was a place where you

    sell alcohol in Poland and it will have

    written alcohol oh yeah

    in Polish my 24 alcoholic yeah and my

    mum came over he's a native speaker of
  • 15:08 - 15:13
    English too and monolingual and she said
  • 15:11 - 15:23
    I wasn't that really clever they've
  • 15:13 - 15:24
    called it the alcohol so then practicing
  • 15:23 - 15:26
    the language so you know this is a thing
  • 15:24 - 15:29
    that native English speakers have a real
  • 15:26 - 15:32
    issue with everybody speaks English
  • 15:29 - 15:34
    everyone I mean that they want to speak
  • 15:32 - 15:38
    it they want to practice and this can be
  • 15:34 - 15:41
    an issue and the level of English in the
  • 15:38 - 15:46
    target languages language etiquette and
  • 15:41 - 15:49
    reactions so just to explain some of
  • 15:46 - 15:51
    what I've written on on here and who
  • 15:49 - 15:53
    here has been in a situation where you
  • 15:51 - 15:57
    want to learn the language you go to the
  • 15:53 - 16:00
    country and then it goes and yeah you
  • 15:57 - 16:02
    get your your Dutch is very good sir
  • 16:00 - 16:04
    sure it's really where were you from in
  • 16:02 - 16:07
    England I
  • 16:04 - 16:11
    okay explain a longsword this curve a
  • 16:07 - 16:13
    fairly man a Lanza and the but they look
  • 16:11 - 16:16
    in the game yes but I think is probably
  • 16:13 - 16:21
    easier in English right
  • 16:16 - 16:23
    and then it's not that they always want

    to force you to speak English it's that
  • 16:23 - 16:27
    they enjoy it and sometimes it's native
  • 16:25 - 16:29
    English because we forget this and you
  • 16:27 - 16:31
    can get offended as I need to English
  • 16:29 - 16:33
    speaker as well because you think oh god
  • 16:31 - 16:35
    they won't even let me speak but it's
  • 16:33 - 16:37
    not always the case so from the one side
  • 16:35 - 16:39
    they're trying to make your life easier
  • 16:37 - 16:42
    by speaking English because they know
  • 16:39 - 16:44
    that you're not going to stress but from
  • 16:42 - 16:47
    the other side you're seeing is Wow is
  • 16:44 - 16:48
    it really that bad that I can't even
  • 16:47 - 16:50
    speak to you for more than five minutes
  • 16:48 - 16:53
    without you turning this conversation
  • 16:50 - 16:56
    into English and it leaves the English
  • 16:53 - 17:01
    speaker feeling very sad disappointed
  • 16:56 - 17:03
    and bit embarrassed and oh dear maybe I
  • 17:01 - 17:06
    should just not bother everyone speaks
  • 17:03 - 17:08
    English and the level of English does
  • 17:06 - 17:11
    play a part because sometimes when you
  • 17:08 - 17:14
    go when I went to Poland the level of
  • 17:11 - 17:15
    English is generally quite low compared
  • 17:14 - 17:17
    to say the Netherlands or Sweden or
  • 17:15 - 17:20
    Norway or Iceland or somewhere like that
  • 17:17 - 17:23
    where I'd say the average level is a b2
  • 17:20 - 17:25
    upper echelons of a b2 whereas in
  • 17:23 - 17:27
    somewhere like Poland it's probably an
  • 17:25 - 17:29
    a2 level the functional they get by is
  • 17:27 - 17:31
    you can go to Poland n' and talk to
  • 17:29 - 17:34
    people generally but you can quite
  • 17:31 - 17:36
    quickly overcome like Alex was talking
  • 17:34 - 17:38
    about yesterday you know when you get to
  • 17:36 - 17:40
    that level you can then quite easily
  • 17:38 - 17:42
    just speak in the target language that's
  • 17:40 - 17:46
    more difficult for some languages than
  • 17:42 - 17:47
    others and that can be intimidating but
  • 17:46 - 17:48
    as a native English speaker as well
  • 17:47 - 17:51
    we're always very used to having the
  • 17:48 - 17:54
    upper hand and we use this to our
  • 17:51 - 17:55
    advantage of course because you can
  • 17:54 - 17:58
    dominate a conversation very easily
  • 17:55 - 18:00
    because you have a rich vocabulary
  • 17:58 - 18:02
    automatically because you is you're an
  • 18:00 - 18:05
    educated native speaker of English you
  • 18:02 - 18:07
    know you you're used to learning how to
  • 18:05 - 18:11
    debate or or talk or put your points
  • 18:07 - 18:12
    across in a very eloquent way whereas if
  • 18:11 - 18:14
    you've learned English as a foreign
  • 18:12 - 18:17
    language then naturally it's more of a
  • 18:14 - 18:18
    struggle to get to that stage so as a
  • 18:17 - 18:21
    native English speaker you can get
  • 18:18 - 18:23
    complacent with this ability to express
  • 18:21 - 18:25
    yourself without any boundaries and
  • 18:23 - 18:28
    sometimes actually the practicing the
  • 18:25 - 18:31
    language is an issue internally because
  • 18:28 - 18:33
    you feel restricted for all the reasons
  • 18:31 - 18:35
    we talked about before of grammar
  • 18:33 - 18:37

    things the only language in the UK that

    I found got really positive reactions

    generally was French because it's seen

    as a as either a cultural equal or

    slightly posh still but and the other

    definitely I got more negative reactions

    and positive unfortunately so that comes

    that's quite commonly used and they're

    picked for four good reasons there

    they're quite you know well spoken

    languages in the world and are useful

    for the job market later on so there is

    some some method to the madness but

    there are also these prestige languages

    that you think of you know people will

    talk about I want my child to speak this

    really good rationale or you get these

    you know posh private schools that will
  • 24:46 - 24:51
    teach Japanese or Chinese because it's
  • 24:48 - 24:54
    seen as a prestige language in addition
  • 24:51 - 24:57
    to the prestige language of French and
  • 24:54 - 25:00
    then there's heritage so in places like
  • 24:57 - 25:02
    Wales you have to learn Welsh to some
  • 25:00 - 25:05
    degree if it's is the first language or
  • 25:02 - 25:06
    a second language its I think now
  • 25:05 - 25:07
    they've changed it so you only learn it
  • 25:06 - 25:09
    till about fourteen or something like
  • 25:07 - 25:12
    that but you you have to do some Welsh
  • 25:09 - 25:15
    because it's obviously with the official
  • 25:12 - 25:19
    language of the country next English and
  • 25:15 - 25:20
    but there's often a lot of stigma

    attached to some of these heritage
  • 25:20 - 25:25
    language languages

    people don't want to seem different so

    I've met people who are either from
  • 25:28 - 25:33
    Welsh extraction who are actually very

    against and the Welsh language I've met

    people who who speak languages from from
  • 25:37 - 25:41
    India or penguin Bangladesh or Pakistan
  • 25:38 - 25:42
    and their parents spoke them at home but
  • 25:41 - 25:46
    they speak them with a very strong
  • 25:42 - 25:48
    Yorkshire accent or but other regional
  • 25:46 - 25:50
    accents and they become very British and
  • 25:48 - 25:52
    it's it's not it's not that they shun
  • 25:50 - 25:54
    the language because they use it at home
  • 25:52 - 25:56
    but you you get these reactions of
  • 25:54 - 25:59
    wanting to fit in so anyone seen East is
  • 25:56 - 26:02
    East it's a really good film in the UK
  • 25:59 - 26:04
    British film that demonstrates this this

    struggle between a Pakistani father and
  • 26:04 - 26:12
    a Yorkshire nun who and the children are

    sort of caught between the two cultures

    I like what they're speaking and they go

    to they go and they read the Koran and
  • 26:16 - 26:21
    they learn Arabic and they but they
  • 26:19 - 26:23
    don't take the language so seriously
  • 26:21 - 26:25
    because then I suppose the scene being
  • 26:23 - 26:28
    seen is different to the local community
  • 26:25 - 26:31
    and these are things that I find really
  • 26:28 - 26:33
    quite sad because that the diversity and
  • 26:31 - 26:35
    and actually having these these
  • 26:33 - 26:39
    additional heritage things are really
  • 26:35 - 26:42
    nice and and quite quite good for myself

    personally I actually I heard Welsh as a
  • 26:42 - 26:48
    child and nun and I always knew I grew
  • 26:45 - 26:50
    up with speaking English but there were

    always sort of elements of Welsh put

    into the English as well like we knew

    of it and never in my wildest dream

    because of this this last reason it's

    like one of the best languages that I

    it at home and we use it all the time

    the road ahead so the first one is the

    hardest the first language so anybody

    it's like preaching to the converted

    first one is is often the hardest one to

    learn and people often come to you and

    say well isn't it really easy after that

    and yes it is no it isn't it is because

    once you've learned one you can imagine

    what it's like to speak another language

    and I think that mindset and that

    ability to to consider what it is to

    speak another language stays with you

    then for further learning and the other

    thing that's really important when you

    learn a language is language bridges

    created so when you go through the

    process again grammatical terms often

    repeat themselves or have similarities

    you can you can sort of associate things

    better we go back to the vocabulary it

    doesn't seem as vast anymore I've learnt

    it's quite a lot of words here are the

    so it's permeated all of these different

    societies in different ways and and it

    really helps my advice is always if

    you're a native English speaker learn

    French it helps you with English it

    helps you understand English literature

    it helps you to expand your vocabulary

    without having to work very hard because

    you have French and you have a better

    vocabulary in your own native tongue and

    it's one of the reasons I chose French

    as a native language for my daughter as

    well because I knew that it would be

    really important

    and taking on new languages so when you

    when you've got all of this you've got

    this new mindset you've got all these

    links and bridges from the new language

    been here for a little bit of time so it

    the guy was speaking this Slavic accent

    my wife and I was speaking in Macedonian

    and we said excuse me where are you from

    because we thought maybe there's a

    chance he's from the Balkans and he went

    and from Croatia had thought of Brad

    happens in a lot of places outside

    who who just go in a conversation

    between five languages and they do it

    language in areas and it will it will do

    the same thing as happening in India or
  • 39:47 - 39:51
    African countries where where this is

    the norm between tribes or between
  • 39:51 - 39:56
    regions of the country for just general
  • 39:54 - 39:58
    conversation but it will be be maybe a
  • 39:56 - 40:02
    high educated level because they've
  • 39:58 - 40:07
    studied maybe in all the languages okay

    started Swedish from my first Germanic

    naturally so I I had Swedish at

    university but I didn't have German at

    school at all

    I spoke no German until I was 22 and

    never studied it but Swedish I found
  • 41:28 - 41:32
    more similar to English because of the
  • 41:30 - 41:35
    structure and the way it was flowing and
  • 41:32 - 41:37
    the the putting different article the
  • 41:35 - 41:39
    end was a bit weird but it was more or
  • 41:37 - 41:42
    less okay when I got to German and this
  • 41:39 - 41:44
    whole flippin Lee the sentence round and
  • 41:42 - 41:45
    putting verbs at the end of the sentence
  • 41:44 - 41:48
    yeah we do it in English as well
  • 41:45 - 41:49
    sometimes but in German the way of doing
  • 41:48 - 41:53
    it was a bit of a mind flip

    and for me there was a real I felt I

    would describe it as a physiological

    change in my brain from the the Romance

    language set to the Germanic and once

    you go through that change there's no

    going back

    and so that's that's kind of what I'm

    getting out with the first ones the

    hardest because that going forwards and

    then not being able to go back from

    understanding that and and visualizing

    speaking in a language that's why I say

    it's the hardest but there's definitely

    struggles with each new family because

    there are new grow new ways of thinking

    that that change completely and you have

    to make that flip again interesting that

    learn Russian in Lithuanian for me was

    way easier to practice Russian because

    Russian as Italian I think they're used

    maybe to see other people

    struggling so themselves they're used to
  • 43:28 - 43:32
    adapt in a way to somebody speaking

    their language as a second language so

    my question is what can we how can we

    help these societies maybe to open their
  • 43:39 - 43:42
    eyes and to realize that look there are

    lots of people that would love to speak

    your language and what can you do

    natives - yeah this is really true as an
  • 43:49 - 43:56
    English language native we're used to a
  • 43:52 - 43:57
    huge wide variety of different accents
  • 43:56 - 43:59
    and people from different cultures
  • 43:57 - 44:01
    speaking our language so our air can
  • 43:59 - 44:03
    tune in and can adapt quite quickly and
  • 44:01 - 44:04
    a lot of other smaller countries where
  • 44:03 - 44:06
    they're not used to people learning the
  • 44:04 - 44:09
    language and I live in a country exactly
  • 44:06 - 44:11
    the same you know in the Republic of
  • 44:09 - 44:13
    Macedonia people didn't really study
  • 44:11 - 44:15
    Macedonian and it's it's there aren't
  • 44:13 - 44:19
    many that speak it well you know now
  • 44:15 - 44:22
    from abroad that come in and I remember
  • 44:19 - 44:24
    when I first went there and they that I
  • 44:22 - 44:26
    went to the school to try and learn
  • 44:24 - 44:28
    Macedonian that way to have proper
  • 44:26 - 44:29
    lessons and they went yeah we've we've
  • 44:28 - 44:31
    taught really successfully beyond the
  • 44:29 - 44:33
    basics we've got this American guys been
  • 44:31 - 44:36
    over two years he's fantastic but he
  • 44:33 - 44:38
    calls we don't stand a word he says but
  • 44:36 - 44:42
    it's because it's because of the accent
  • 44:38 - 44:44
    how you can combat that it's tough it's
  • 44:42 - 44:45
    this is one of the reasons why I wanted
  • 44:44 - 44:46
    to make this presentation because I know
  • 44:45 - 44:49
    it will go on YouTube but I know that
  • 44:46 - 44:50
    within the community people will see it
  • 44:49 - 44:52
    and they'll understand this struggle and

    it's taking the time to be patient and

    listening to it and sometimes I find it

    then because you are an ambassador for

    foreigner speaking Lithuanian when you

    learn any language you will then an

    ambassador for a foreigner learning that

    language and that's how you need to see

    yourself so don't get scared when they

    reply to you in English or in another

    that you may speak just you know be

    important as you say just carry on and

    speakers suffer and that you take this

    time and you make this effort to learn

    languages but actually the picking the

    language is very difficult because

    there's not always a natural language to
  • 48:55 - 49:01
    pick and it doesn't matter how many you
  • 48:59 - 49:02
    pick you'll still learn a native English
  • 49:01 - 49:05
    speaker when you go to the country that
  • 49:02 - 49:07
    you don't speak the language of and you
  • 49:05 - 49:10
    still feel lazy and you still feel that
  • 49:07 - 49:12
    you're representing a stereotype and I
  • 49:10 - 49:14
    definitely feel that as well when I go
  • 49:12 - 49:17
    to like when I go to hungry and I just
  • 49:14 - 49:19
    know like you know a few words and I
  • 49:17 - 49:21
    feel are why can't I just become Gareth

    but then you think like I can't do this

    in every single country in the world

    either that's to me one psychological

    go oh yeah we're speaking in Dutch for

    like half an hour about where I'm going

    to fly to what I'm going to do and why

    need it and they go oh show her you're

    from United Kingdom yeah and they only

    give manator long side leg needs the

    hater and I can still speak Dutch

    my ex my instinct is to reply to them in

    their language but at the same time I

    don't want to make this person feel bad

    you know feel like maybe their English

    isn't good enough and I know you know

    they're only doing their job it's only

    natural for them to think that you know

    the English to show that you have an

    awareness of their culture in their

    language and that night spark and a

    reaction in return that they say oh

    you've learned some some Japanese or

    you've learned some Chinese and that's

    really nice and then you go then you say

    oh yeah I studied it over Beauvoir and

    they may it may spark a tiny

    conversation in those situations it's

    unlikely to spark a huge dialogue

    because it's it's a plane ride right and

    they've got a job to do and they're

    doing their job to the best of their

    ability and if they went up to some

    every every every person on the plane

    white who was white or or black and just

    randomly spoke to them in Chinese or

    Japanese they probably make more enemies

    than friends

    do you like what the hell you know and

    it is the language of the sky English is

    used in the sky so they're trained to

    make the announcements in English so

    there's kind of that mindset going on in

    that space

    appearance because we're all mixed right
