Marine Protected Areas: A Winning Card For Sustainable Tourism

  • 0:22 - 0:27
(narrator) The Mediterranean is one of
    the largest global tourist destinations,
  • 0:27 - 0:30
    attracting about 300 million people
    each year
  • 0:30 - 0:34
with a forecast of 500 million by 2030.
  • 0:35 - 0:38
This will have a huge impact
    in decades to come.
  • 0:39 - 0:44
    Developing an increasing sustainable
tourism is of the utmost importance.
  • 0:45 - 0:50
    (Erica Harms) Tourism actually is
a good thing if it's done the proper way.
  • 0:50 - 0:53
    Compare it to mining,
    compare it to overfishing.
  • 0:53 - 0:57
It is a good industry and
there is a way to do it right,
  • 0:57 - 1:02
but there is a way that it can happen
without the communities having any control
  • 1:02 - 1:04
if they just stand on the sidelines.
  • 1:08 - 1:11
    (narrator) Marine protected areas
    are a winning card
  • 1:11 - 1:13
    for sustainable tourism,
  • 1:13 - 1:16
    as they ensure a healthy
    and productive sea,
  • 1:16 - 1:18
    and support local economies.
  • 1:21 - 1:24
Just think about the value of
    a grouper on a plate
  • 1:27 - 1:31
compared to the much higher value
of a grouper alive in the wild
  • 1:32 - 1:34
    and its appeal for divers.
  • 1:38 - 1:43
    (Italian) (Augusto Navone) We have
    to promote sustainable devlopment
  • 1:43 - 1:47
bearing in mind that the starting point
must be the key conservation objectives.
  • 1:47 - 1:50
    I'm particularly referring
    to underwater tourism
  • 1:50 - 1:53
    that takes adventage
    of fish population increase
  • 1:53 - 1:55
and on the so called "MPA effect".
  • 1:55 - 1:59
In 2014 we reached about 20.000 dives
  • 1:59 - 2:05
that brought more than 13.5 million Euros
    to the local community.
  • 2:10 - 2:15
    (narrator) Ecotourism is today
a great opportunity for local operators
  • 2:15 - 2:18
    and therefore for local economies.
  • 2:19 - 2:22
    (Erica Harms) Many travelers
just want to have that opportunity
  • 2:22 - 2:23
    to be close to nature.
  • 2:23 - 2:25
If you get them to come back,
  • 2:25 - 2:27
    that's the type of tourism
you want to have in the long run
  • 2:27 - 2:30
    because you have
the ability to develop the product
  • 2:30 - 2:31
    that those tourists want,
  • 2:31 - 2:35
you'll have the ability to become
one of the entrepreneurs and the leaders,
  • 2:35 - 2:40
    versus having others come
and dictate where the market is going
  • 2:48 - 2:51
(Italian) (Luca Tixi) My ideal tourist
    is a curious tourist.
  • 2:51 - 2:54
    A keen interest, curiosity
    and desire to discover
  • 2:54 - 2:56
    are the key elements
  • 2:56 - 2:59
    to get the best
from the activities that we organise.
  • 3:00 - 3:03
I grew up in this marine area
    and know it well.
  • 3:03 - 3:05
If I had not had this knowledge,
  • 3:06 - 3:08
    if I had not explored
    this place thoroughly
  • 3:08 - 3:10
as I did with my dad as a child,
  • 3:10 - 3:12
perhaps the result wouldn't be the same.
  • 3:13 - 3:19
    When we started this business,
there could have been no other choice
  • 3:19 - 3:24
because when you know an area well,
    you can explain it well.
  • 3:27 - 3:30
    (Italian) (Sillvia Barani) It's
    a marine protected area,
  • 3:30 - 3:31
    it's a national park,
  • 3:31 - 3:32
it's also know as "Park of the People",
  • 3:32 - 3:38
and I think the charm of these places
will endure as long as they are part
  • 3:38 - 3:39
    of a community.
  • 3:39 - 3:41
    Those who live here,
those who choose to live here,
  • 3:41 - 3:43
those who invest in and work here
  • 3:43 - 3:47
    have developed
a close attachment to the territory
  • 3:47 - 3:50
    and respect for the environment
    is essential.
  • 3:51 - 3:55
The certification process for the Park
    has been followed very well.
  • 3:55 - 3:57
It is, and will continue to be, a success.
  • 3:57 - 4:01
It works because the marine protected area
    is definitely an added value
  • 4:01 - 4:03
    for tourism structures,
  • 4:03 - 4:06
and such structures are an added value
    to the marine protected area.
  • 4:11 - 4:14
    (Marina Gomei) Marine protected areas
    are one of the tools
  • 4:14 - 4:15
    to reach sustainable tourism,
  • 4:16 - 4:19
and at WWF we work with the tourist sector
  • 4:19 - 4:23
to ensure that they take care
    of their own destinations
  • 4:23 - 4:26
as a value to be protected
    for a long-term investment.
  • 4:32 - 4:36
    (narrator) Furthermore,
    the Mediterranean marine protected areas
  • 4:36 - 4:41
    provide cultural and educational services
    that are of great importance,
  • 4:42 - 4:45
    as younger generations
    are the tourists of tomorrow.
  • 4:45 - 4:48
    (French) (Jean-Louis Pieraggi) We have
    a big role to plan
  • 4:48 - 4:52
    since we are one
of the most touristic areas of Corsica.
  • 4:52 - 4:56
    The Lavazzi islands
    are highly frequented every year.
  • 4:56 - 5:00
We have a lot of responsibilities
    in confeying information
  • 5:00 - 5:03
and allowing a change of behaviour
  • 5:03 - 5:05
    through activities
    like the underwater trail.
  • 5:05 - 5:13
And the visitors enjoy their time
    through this secured activity.
  • 5:13 - 5:15
    This activity allows us
    to deliver a message
  • 5:16 - 5:18
about the importance of protecting nature.
  • 5:18 - 5:21
    - (interviewer) Do you like it?
    - (child) Yes, I do.
  • 5:22 - 5:24
    (narrator) Investing
    in marine protected areas
  • 5:25 - 5:28
    means shaping a new future
    for the Mediterranean .
  • 5:29 - 5:31
    An investment that cannot wait.
