    I didn’t know anyone there

    but I knew that I wanted to make movies

    so it made sense to go to Hollywood.

    After a few years I came back to France,

    and when people would ask me:

    “What do you do in life?”
  • 0:46 - 0:47
    I would reply,
  • 0:47 - 0:50
    “I’m a filmmaker. I make movies.
  • 0:50 - 0:53
    I’m just back from a few years in L.A.”
  • 0:53 - 0:57
    I would often see a sparkle in their eyes
  • 0:57 - 0:59
    as they'd say, "That's amazing!
  • 0:59 - 1:00
    What films do you do?
  • 1:00 - 1:01
    Can we see them at the movie?
  • 1:01 - 1:04
    Have you worked with famous people?”
  • 1:05 - 1:06
    And I would reply,
  • 1:06 - 1:07
    “I direct mostly fiction."
  • 1:07 - 1:09
    My films don't play at the movie theatre
  • 1:09 - 1:11
    - not yet. And no...
  • 1:11 - 1:14
    I haven’t worked with anyone famous.”
  • 1:15 - 1:17
    At that moment there would be a silence
  • 1:17 - 1:20
    long enough for their enthusiasm
    to go down a few inches
  • 1:20 - 1:22
    And then we would keep on talking about
  • 1:22 - 1:24
    Los Angeles.
  • 1:26 - 1:27
    Little by little,
  • 1:27 - 1:33
    tired of seeing people’s reaction
    going from curious to disappointed
  • 1:33 - 1:36
    when they would realize
    that I was a "wannabe"
  • 1:36 - 1:41
    I started lying about what I was doing.
  • 1:41 - 1:44
    I stopped saying
    "I'm a filmmaker"
  • 1:44 - 1:47
    to say “I work as a freelance.”
  • 1:47 - 1:49
    I stopped saying "I make films"
  • 1:49 - 1:52
    to say “I make videos for clients.”
  • 1:53 - 1:55
    It sounded less dreamy
  • 1:55 - 1:57
    but it was useful and practical.
  • 1:57 - 1:58
    We would talk about how to find clients,
  • 1:58 - 2:01
    how to bill them, about gear.
  • 2:01 - 2:03
    And more importantly,
  • 2:03 - 2:08
    I stopped feeling like I had
    to apologize for my lack of success.

    I began to feel a bit weird
    about it though.
  • 2:11 - 2:14
    I started to wonder:
    "Why do you lie about what you do?"
  • 2:14 - 2:18
    And why do you feel compelled
    to diminish people's expectations
  • 2:18 - 2:22
    so they won’t think you’ve failed?
  • 2:23 - 2:26
    It’s at that point that I really started
    to become interested
  • 2:26 - 2:28
    about the concept of “success”.
  • 2:28 - 2:31
    And at how it has evolved
    in the last few years,
  • 2:31 - 2:36
    especially with social media's arrival
    in our lives that reminds us daily
  • 2:36 - 2:39
    how we rank on the graph of success
  • 2:39 - 2:42
    compared to the other 8 billion.
  • 2:43 - 2:47
    This ranking on the “success graph”
    explains why sometimes,
  • 2:47 - 2:50
    when we talk with people,
    a contest starts
  • 2:50 - 2:53
    to find out who has the most impact.
  • 2:53 - 2:55
    It’s conveyed through innocent words:
  • 2:55 - 2:56
    “I know X person”
  • 2:56 - 2:58
    “X number of people follow me”,
  • 2:58 - 3:00
    “I visited X number of countries”,
  • 3:00 - 3:02
    “I was a speaker at X event”.
  • 3:02 - 3:05
    Giving a TED Talk is great
    to win an impact contest.

    Power and Success have always existed.
  • 3:12 - 3:15
    And they’ve always been a fuel
    for some people,
  • 3:15 - 3:17
    and obstacles for others.
  • 3:17 - 3:21
    But in the last few years,
    things have become so intense
  • 3:21 - 3:26
    that I’ve already found myself
    listening to 24-year-olds
  • 3:26 - 3:29
    explaining to me that they had
    abandoned a dream or an idea
  • 3:29 - 3:31
    before they had even started.
  • 3:31 - 3:35
    And the reason why they
    had given up before even trying
  • 3:35 - 3:38
    is because they were paralyzed by
    the success of people younger than them
  • 3:38 - 3:42
    that they were witnessing daily
    on social media.
  • 3:42 - 3:47
    I’ve listened to 24-year-olds explaining
    to me that if they really had something
  • 3:47 - 3:52
    to achieve on this planet, they should
    have had their breakthrough by now.
  • 3:53 - 4:00
    At 24 they didn’t feel old,
    they felt expired.
  • 4:01 - 4:05
    We have developed a surprising
    relationship with what we could call
  • 4:05 - 4:07
    our “expiration date”.
  • 4:07 - 4:11
    We used to have one expiration date:
    it was the date of our death.
  • 4:11 - 4:14
    Today we have a second expiration date
    in our lives, and it's
  • 4:14 - 4:18
    our social expiration date.
  • 4:18 - 4:23
    The idea that when we do something,
    its value must be recognized and
  • 4:23 - 4:25
    measurable to exist.
  • 4:25 - 4:30
    And if we don’t receive immediately
    a positive feedback about what we do,
  • 4:30 - 4:41
    or worse, if what we do is deemed
    useless, ridicule, or a failure,
  • 4:41 - 4:45
    then we feel socially expired.
  • 4:45 - 4:48
    And that’s how some 24-year-olds
  • 4:48 - 4:52
    prefer to go sit on the bench to
    watch History create itself
  • 4:52 - 4:55
    without them, rather than
    risking to do something
  • 4:55 - 5:00
    and not receive immediately
    a positive feedback.
  • 5:01 - 5:03
    While I was looking into
    what "success" means today
  • 5:03 - 5:05
    and into our date of social expiration,
  • 5:05 - 5:08
    I’ve realised that my job is not
  • 5:08 - 5:12
    to write screenplays or direct films.
  • 5:12 - 5:16
    My job is to fabricate stories.
  • 5:16 - 5:21
    It’s a job that might seem
    useless, but actually,
  • 5:21 - 5:28
    storytelling is the best way that we,
    humans, have found to survive.
  • 5:29 - 5:30
    Tonight,
  • 5:30 - 5:34
    if we’ve all come onto this stage
    to talk to you for 15 minutes,
  • 5:34 - 5:38
    it’s because the best way to
    convey an idea is to do it
  • 5:38 - 5:40
    with a story.
  • 5:40 - 5:46
    In 2018, we could have made a
    pdf with each TED Talk's main idea
  • 5:46 - 5:49
    summed up in one sentence,
    and emailed it to you.
  • 5:49 - 5:51
    Really, we could have done it.
  • 5:51 - 5:55
    It would have cost you less money,
    and it would have taken us less time.

    But the power of the messages
    we are trying to share
  • 5:59 - 6:01
    would have evaporated.

    We know it and you know it.
  • 6:03 - 6:08
    And that’s why you are here tonight,
    to listen to stories that might open

    a world of possibilities.

    In 1944,
  • 6:12 - 6:17
    Professors Fritz Heider and Marianne
    Simmel conducted a test.
  • 6:17 - 6:20
    They showed a video
    to a group of students
  • 6:20 - 6:23
    and asked them to answer
    a series of questions
  • 6:23 - 6:25
    to describe what they had seen.

    I’m going to show you 15 seconds
    of the video,
  • 6:28 - 6:29
    it’s going to be quick
  • 6:29 - 6:32
    but I invite you to try
    to answer this question:

    “What am I seeing on the screen?”

    That was 15 seconds.
  • 6:52 - 6:54
    When they reviewed the questionnaires,
  • 6:54 - 6:58
    Heider and Simmel discovered
    that 33 out of 34 students
  • 6:58 - 7:01
    had fabricated a story.
  • 7:01 - 7:03
    They had imputed motives,
  • 7:03 - 7:05
    emotions, and behaviours
  • 7:05 - 7:08
    to the geometrical figures
    that were randomly moving
  • 7:08 - 7:10
    through space that you just saw.

    This study was one of the first
    scientific study to confirm
  • 7:14 - 7:20
    that our brain understands
    the world through stories.
  • 7:21 - 7:25
    We cannot help but give meaning
    to the world that surrounds us.
  • 7:25 - 7:29
    And to give meaning to the world
    that surrounds us,
  • 7:29 - 7:32
    we fabricate stories.
  • 7:32 - 7:34
    Knowing that,
    that stories are essential
  • 7:34 - 7:37
    to our survival and to our life,
  • 7:37 - 7:41
    I want to tell you another
    story about success.
  • 7:41 - 7:46
    An alternative to the current notion
    that paralyzes so many people today.
  • 7:46 - 7:50
    Earlier I said that we
    had two expiration dates:
  • 7:50 - 7:54
    the date of our death and
    the date of our social expiration
  • 7:54 - 7:56
    that we give to ourselves
    sooner and sooner.
  • 7:56 - 7:59
    What I did not tell you…
  • 7:59 - 8:02
    is that a phone is ringing right now.
  • 8:02 - 8:05
    What I didn’t tell you is
    that we all have a joker.
  • 8:06 - 8:11
    We all have the possibility
    to become a good story.
  • 8:11 - 8:16
    We all have the possibility to become
    a good story that is going to inspire
  • 8:16 - 8:20
    other human beings and
    help them move forward.
  • 8:20 - 8:26
    And there’s one group of people
    whose job is to distribute jokers:
  • 8:26 - 8:28
    the story fabricators.
  • 8:28 - 8:30
    Lucky me: it’s my job.
  • 8:30 - 8:36
    My job is to hunt, to imagine,
    and to share the stories
  • 8:36 - 8:40
    of people with a surprising,
    innovating and impactful destiny,
  • 8:40 - 8:43
    and who embodies strong ideas.
  • 8:43 - 8:47
    And currently, we are living through
    an extremely interesting period.
  • 8:47 - 8:48
    Just like archeologists,
  • 8:48 - 8:52
    we are digging out new stories,
    different stories.
  • 8:52 - 8:59
    Stories of people who often did not receive
    immediate and positive feedback
  • 8:59 - 9:02
    about the worth of what
    they were doing and who,
  • 9:02 - 9:06
    5, 50, 100, 200, 500 years later
  • 9:06 - 9:10
    end up at the center of the
    storytelling stage to help us,
  • 9:10 - 9:13
    the new generations, to better
    understand the world
  • 9:13 - 9:15
    and to move forward.
  • 9:15 - 9:19
    For example, some of you
    might recognize the name of
  • 9:19 - 9:20
    Georgina Reid.
  • 9:20 - 9:26
    A textile designer who, in 1971,
    when she was 63, decided that
  • 9:26 - 9:32
    what she really wanted to do was
    to save her little town's lighthouse
  • 9:32 - 9:36
    that was at risk of falling down
    due to the cliff's erosion.
  • 9:36 - 9:39
    Georgina created a whole system
    that she patented.
  • 9:39 - 9:43
    She presents her project to
    the coast guards,
  • 9:43 - 9:45
    they listen to her and say:
  • 9:45 - 9:48
    “We won’t prevent you from doing it
    but we won't help you out either."
  • 9:48 - 9:50
    Okay, no problem.
  • 9:50 - 9:54
    For 15 years, helped by her husband
    and volunteers, Georgina used
  • 9:54 - 9:58
    her knowledge and her time
    for free, to prevent the lighthouse
  • 9:58 - 10:01
    to prevent the lighthouse
    from falling down.
  • 10:01 - 10:03
    And she will succeed.
  • 10:03 - 10:07
    Georgina died in 2001, but
    the lightouse is still here.
  • 10:08 - 10:12
    And then, 3 years ago,
    a French story fabricator,
  • 10:12 - 10:16
    Pénélope Bagieu, gave a joker
    to Georgina.
  • 10:16 - 10:20
    She shared Georgina’s story
    in a graphic novel dedicated
  • 10:20 - 10:25
    to several women who changed
    their story and sometimes History
  • 10:25 - 10:28
    in unexpected ways.
  • 10:29 - 10:32
    It’s thanks to a story fabricator
  • 10:32 - 10:36
    that 200,000 French people
    and myself, have been inspired
  • 10:36 - 10:41
    by Georgina and her determination
    to fight for something
  • 10:41 - 10:46
    that mattered to her even though
    officially she was told it didn't.
  • 10:47 - 10:50
    Georgina was able to become
    a good story because she was
  • 10:50 - 10:54
    an active actress of her story.
  • 10:54 - 10:59
    She didn’t settle for wishing that
    the lighthouse wouldn't fall down.
  • 10:59 - 11:03
    No, she did what she had to do
    to make sure the lighthouse
  • 11:03 - 11:04
    wouldn’t fall down.
  • 11:05 - 11:07
    And this word, “doing”,
  • 11:07 - 11:11
    is one of the three steps
    to become a good story.
  • 11:11 - 11:14
    In reality, the recipe to become
    a good story is simple.
  • 11:14 - 11:17
    Well, it fits into three steps.
  • 11:18 - 11:20
    First, you have to listen
    to your intuition,
  • 11:20 - 11:24
    to hear what each one of us
    individually, really want to do.
  • 11:24 - 11:26
    And once you’ve listened to it,
  • 11:26 - 11:30
    you need to muster the courage
    to go for it, and do it.
  • 11:31 - 11:34
    And once you’ve had
    the courage to do it,
  • 11:34 - 11:35
    you need to repeat.
  • 11:35 - 11:38
    Every day, you need to
    do it again.
  • 11:39 - 11:42
    Today we are under a lot of pressure
    when it comes to the projects
  • 11:42 - 11:44
    we decide to pursue.
  • 11:44 - 11:46
    They need to have a goal.
  • 11:46 - 11:49
    If they don't have a goal, then
    they are not serious.
  • 11:49 - 11:52
    And if they are not serious,
    then they are worth nothing.
  • 11:54 - 11:57
    I completely disagree with
    this way of thinking.
  • 11:57 - 12:00
    If there’s one thing I've
    learned this past decade,
  • 12:00 - 12:03
    hunting and fabricating stories,
  • 12:03 - 12:08
    it's that the value of what we do
    is not fixed in time.
  • 12:08 - 12:12
    The value of what we do
    can have a surprising impact
  • 12:12 - 12:16
    in five years, in fifty years,
    after our death or
  • 12:16 - 12:18
    our great-grand-children’s death.
  • 12:18 - 12:21
    So there’s no point to try
    picking something that will have
  • 12:21 - 12:25
    an impact instantaneously.
  • 12:25 - 12:27
    We can’t know if it will happen.
  • 12:27 - 12:30
    We should just keep on doing.
  • 12:31 - 12:33
    And these three steps:
    listening to yourself,
  • 12:33 - 12:35
    going for it, and
    doing it again,
  • 12:35 - 12:40
    they are crystallized in
    Carmen Herrera’s story.
  • 12:41 - 12:45
    Carmen Herrera was born in La Havana in 1915.
  • 12:45 - 12:48
    At a young age she realizes that
    what she really wants to do
  • 12:48 - 12:49
    is paint.
  • 12:49 - 12:52
    So she paints, every day.
  • 12:52 - 12:56
    And then she realizes that she creates
    minimalist abstract paintings,
  • 12:56 - 12:59
    exactly at the time when abstract
    minimalism is trendy.
  • 12:59 - 13:00
    Perfect.
  • 13:00 - 13:04
    She sells her first painting,
    and then nothing.
  • 13:04 - 13:08
    She exhibits her work,
    the audience doesn't respond.
  • 13:08 - 13:13
    She tries to find galleries
    that would exhibit her work,
  • 13:13 - 13:14
    everybody says no.
  • 13:14 - 13:17
    And then one day,
  • 13:17 - 13:21
    Carmen is offered the opportunity
    to exhibit her work again,
  • 13:21 - 13:24
    and this time people love it.
  • 13:25 - 13:29
    We are in 2004 at that point,
    Carmen is 89.
  • 13:31 - 13:33
    Today Carmen is 103.
  • 13:33 - 13:37
    These past 14 years, her
    paintings have been exhibited
  • 13:37 - 13:41
    presented in some of the most
    prestigious museums in the world.
  • 13:41 - 13:46
    For 60 years Carmen Herrera
    has created daily,
  • 13:46 - 13:51
    paintings that nobody thought
    had any value.
  • 13:51 - 13:52
    And then one day,
  • 13:52 - 13:57
    Carmen Herrera’s story has aligned
    with Art’s History.
  • 13:57 - 14:04
    If I tell you this story, it is not
    to tell you that success always comes.
  • 14:04 - 14:06
    Because it’s not the case.
  • 14:06 - 14:10
    But it’s because I'm convinced
    that Carmen Herrera would still
  • 14:10 - 14:13
    be painting today, even if
    she had never found
  • 14:13 - 14:16
    her audience while
    she was alive.
  • 14:16 - 14:19
    Carmen Herrera didn’t paint
    to become famous.
  • 14:19 - 14:24
    She painted because it was
    giving meaning to her life.
  • 14:24 - 14:27
    It’s not success that gives meaning to our life
  • 14:27 - 14:31
    it’s being self-expressed.
  • 14:31 - 14:33
    And when we are fully expressed,
  • 14:33 - 14:38
    our social expiration date vanishes.
  • 14:38 - 14:40
    When we are fully expressed,
  • 14:40 - 14:43
    our failures as well as our successes
  • 14:43 - 14:45
    become simply steps,
  • 14:45 - 14:49
    on the graph of our personal growth.
  • 14:50 - 14:55
    Tonight what I want to suggest
    is to shift your focus
  • 14:55 - 14:59
    away from what you cannot control.
  • 14:59 - 15:05
    We cannot control how people
    are going to react to what we do.
  • 15:05 - 15:08
    But we can control what we do.
  • 15:08 - 15:13
    So, let’s stop paying attention
    to society’s feedback
  • 15:13 - 15:17
    about the value of what gives
    meaning to our lives.
  • 15:17 - 15:23
    Because we rarely can measure the value
    of what we do right after doing it.
  • 15:23 - 15:27
    And more importantly because the value
    of what we do will evolve unexpectedly
  • 15:27 - 15:30
    over time.
  • 15:30 - 15:34
    Today, when I meet people and
    they ask me what I do in life,
  • 15:34 - 15:39
    I tell them that I am a story fabricator.
  • 15:39 - 15:43
    Nobody really understands what
    it means but it's okay,
  • 15:43 - 15:47
    because if I have the chance to
    talk a little bit more with them,
  • 15:47 - 15:54
    they understand that fabricating stories
    is my way to express myself fully
  • 15:54 - 15:56
    and daily, doing.
  • 15:56 - 15:57
    For the last ten years,
  • 15:57 - 16:05
    I’ve been hunting and fabricating stories
    that I share as screenplays, films, lyrics
  • 16:05 - 16:08
    drawings, podcasts or graphic novels.
  • 16:08 - 16:11
    Sometimes, I doubt.
  • 16:11 - 16:15
    I feel that what I’m doing
    is completely useless.
  • 16:15 - 16:20
    And then I remember that my intuition
    is probably whispering something to me
  • 16:20 - 16:23
    and that I should
    probably listen to it.
  • 16:23 - 16:29
    So I listen to it, I go for it,
    and then I repeat the process.
  • 16:29 - 16:33
    If tomorrow when you wake up
    you feel like doing something "useless",
  • 16:33 - 16:37
    listen to yourself, go for it,
    and repeat the process.
  • 16:37 - 16:43
    Because it’s by being active actors
    of our story that we will become
  • 16:43 - 16:45
    good stories.
  • 16:45 - 16:49
    Stories that other human beings
    will be able to use and share
  • 16:49 - 16:52
    to move forward.

    Do what you have to do,
  • 16:54 - 16:57
    never mind if it feels useless.

    If it’s important to you,
    then it's worth doing.

    Express yourself,

    and we, the story fabricators,
  • 17:06 - 17:08
    we will find you.
