Bending Vibrato (Guitar Lesson TE-009) How to play
-
0:06 - 0:09Hello, Justin here again.
-
0:09 - 0:11In this lesson we're
gonna be checking out -
0:11 - 0:13how to add vibrato to a bend.
-
0:13 - 0:16Lots and lots of people
seem to struggle with this. -
0:16 - 0:20It's actually relatively simple,
when you know the trick. -
0:20 - 0:22And the trick is:
To let the string do the work. -
0:22 - 0:25Now, what I mean by this is...
-
0:25 - 0:27In all of my bending stuff
I have been using this note D. -
0:27 - 0:29So, I am going to stay on that.
-
0:29 - 0:34That's... Third finger,
third string, seventh fret. -
0:34 - 0:36Once you've got a bend... going,
-
0:36 - 0:40and I am going to be using
a tone bend for this little exercise now. -
0:40 - 0:42There's a lot of pressure on the string,
-
0:42 - 0:45trying to push the string
back down to its natural place. -
0:45 - 0:48You are having to use quite a lot
of effort to get that note bent up, -
0:48 - 0:51making sure that you are using
a good bending technique here. -
0:51 - 0:54If you haven't got it already,
-
0:54 - 0:56you will not be able
to put the vibrato. -
0:56 - 0:58If you're trying to do it
with your fingers straight -
0:58 - 1:00without the thumb over
and using the pivot point -
1:00 - 1:03you're probably not going to be
able to do a good bend with vibrato -
1:03 - 1:08So... If you're one of those guys,
go back and learn to bend properly first, -
1:08 - 1:10and then come back
and have a look at this lesson. -
1:10 - 1:13So... As you bend up,
you've got all of this pressure, -
1:13 - 1:15the string pressing down.
-
1:15 - 1:17Now, the trick with
adding vibrato to a bend -
1:17 - 1:22is to first of all make sure
that you get the bend in tune and stop. -
1:22 - 1:25If you watch my other vibrato series,
-
1:25 - 1:27you'll notice that I talk about
hitting the note, -
1:27 - 1:29and then gradually opening up the vibrato.
-
1:29 - 1:31And this is quite important
with a bend as well, -
1:31 - 1:35because you need to get the bend in tune
before you get the vibrato on, -
1:35 - 1:37otherwise it can sound to the listener...
-
1:37 - 1:41that you never actually reached the note
that you were trying to bend to. -
1:41 - 1:43So, you bend up to the note first,
then what you do is: -
1:43 - 1:47You relax your fingers ever so slightly,
relax the pressure.... -
1:47 - 1:50Let the force of the string
push your finger down a little bit, -
1:50 - 1:52and then press it back up.
-
1:52 - 1:54And it's worth doing this
really slowly first. -
1:54 - 1:58So, we are going to go to a close up,
and just going to bend the note up, -
1:58 - 2:01and then relax my finger a little bit
so it comes right down, -
2:01 - 2:03and then push it back up
to the correct pitch, -
2:03 - 2:06let it come down a bit
and back up to the correct pitch. -
2:06 - 2:09Each time you are just going from here,
let it come down, back up, -
2:09 - 2:10come down, back up.
-
2:10 - 2:12And you don't try and pull the string down
-
2:12 - 2:16you just let the string
kind of go back to where it wants to go. -
2:16 - 2:19Don't fight the pressure of the string,
just relax it, push it back up, -
2:19 - 2:22relax it, push it back up,
relax it, push it back up. -
2:22 - 2:25And if you can get used
to doing that nice and slowly -
2:25 - 2:27and you get the feel for it,
then starting to do it faster -
2:27 - 2:28becomes a lot easier.
-
2:28 - 2:31So, let's go and have a look
at a close up of this, -
2:31 - 2:34and... Hopefully it will sort
your bending vibrato out. -
2:35 - 2:36So, here we go,
-
2:36 - 2:38we're starting with
our regular note here, -
2:38 - 2:42which is the note D: Seventh fret,
third string, third finger. -
2:42 - 2:44Now, we are going to start
by bending that up a tone. -
2:44 - 2:48So, if you are not sure about
your bending technique anyway, -
2:48 - 2:50you might want to check it just first,
-
2:50 - 2:53(Plays)
-
2:53 - 2:56Make sure you can get that nicely in pitch
-
2:56 - 2:59(Plays)
-
2:59 - 3:02Now once you've got the bend up like this,
what you are going to try and do -
3:02 - 3:06is let the string
push your finger down a little bit, -
3:06 - 3:08and then push it back up
to the same pitch. -
3:08 - 3:12Let the string go back to where it wants
and then push it back up. -
3:12 - 3:14Now I'm just going
to do that nice and slow... -
3:14 - 3:18(Plays)
-
3:18 - 3:22Relax, push it back up,
relax, push it back up, -
3:22 - 3:24relax, push it back up.
-
3:24 - 3:27You're not relaxing it
right back to the beginning, -
3:27 - 3:30right down to the base,
you're just relaxing it a little bit. -
3:30 - 3:35(Plays)
-
3:35 - 3:40Trying to get a consistent amount of...
Relaxation and pressing it back up, -
3:40 - 3:43and trying to get it right back
to the same pitch each time. -
3:43 - 3:50(Plays)
-
3:50 - 3:53And once you've got that down,
you've got that feeling. -
3:53 - 3:56So practice that for a bit first,
if you're new to bending with vibrato, -
3:56 - 4:00you want to give that a week or two
of practice, five-ten minutes a day. -
4:00 - 4:01Once you've got that idea,
-
4:01 - 4:05then you can start experimenting with
the intensity or the speed of the vibrato -
4:05 - 4:07(Plays)
-
4:07 - 4:10You can see the neck is
wobbling around a little bit. -
4:10 - 4:13Still keeping my good grip
and my pivot point -
4:13 - 4:14like we did for the bend
-
4:14 - 4:17(Plays)
-
4:17 - 4:18Or a bit slower...
-
4:18 - 4:23(Plays)
-
4:23 - 4:26You can get really crazy with this stuff.
-
4:26 - 4:30A nice trick is bending it up, back down,
back up and then putting a vibrato -
4:30 - 4:35(Plays)
-
4:35 - 4:37Takes quite a lot of control.
Get the note up... -
4:37 - 4:40(Plays)
-
4:40 - 4:43A little bit sharp that time for me,
actually a bit naughty, -
4:43 - 4:45(Plays)
-
4:45 - 4:48... Then getting your vibrato good
-
4:48 - 4:49(Plays)
-
4:49 - 4:53Slow
(Plays) -
4:53 - 4:55Faster
(Plays) -
4:55 - 4:57(Plays)
-
4:57 - 5:01Quite a tricky one to get the vibrato
happening all of the way down. -
5:01 - 5:04But, again, experiment,
just like I talked about before. -
5:04 - 5:08Emulation, experimentation, and ease.
-
5:08 - 5:10Emulating people's bends, that you like...
-
5:10 - 5:13(Plays)
-
5:13 - 5:15Nice tip there,
you can do that sort of stuff -
5:15 - 5:17There's a lot of things you can do.
-
5:17 - 5:19Experimenting,
like I was just trying to do -
5:19 - 5:22trying to get the vibrato
to happen all the way down the note -
5:22 - 5:26(Plays)
-
5:26 - 5:29You can go crazy with these things...
It's quite good fun. -
5:29 - 5:33Remember, it has to be easy,
but if you've got your bending technique -
5:33 - 5:35and you've got your pivot point
and your thumb over, -
5:35 - 5:38then you shouldn't find it
too difficult at all. -
5:38 - 5:42Now, the other kind of things
that you need to know about this one. -
5:42 - 5:45First of all, if you're going to do
any of these sort of stuff -
5:45 - 5:48with the first finger,
then you tend to pull down with that. -
5:48 - 5:50Pushing up with your first finger
is pretty difficult, -
5:50 - 5:52so you tend to...
-
5:52 - 5:54(Plays)
-
5:54 - 5:56So, this time you're
pulling the string down -
5:56 - 5:58(Plays)
-
5:58 - 6:02And, again, letting the string
relax back to where it wants to go, -
6:02 - 6:06which in this case is physically up,
and then pushing it back again... -
6:06 - 6:12(Plays)
-
6:12 - 6:15And of course, the same would apply
if you were doing a big bend like on... -
6:15 - 6:19You know, quite low down...
If you are bending this here, -
6:19 - 6:23this note D, which is fifth fret,
fifth string, third finger, up to E -
6:23 - 6:24(Plays)
-
6:24 - 6:27You have to be... Relax,
push it back, relax, push it back... -
6:27 - 6:38(Plays)
-
6:38 - 6:41It's quite a good trick
to remember on those thicker strings. -
6:41 - 6:45You're not likely to do that a lot,
so you don't have to practice that. -
6:45 - 6:48You don't have to practice it as much.
-
6:48 - 6:51The ones I'd practice,
is definitely your third finger, -
6:51 - 6:53I don't even bother practicing it
with my little finger -
6:53 - 6:58because I don't really think that works,
and I don't know of any pro guitar players -
6:58 - 7:01that do a lot of bending
with the little finger... -
7:01 - 7:04Might be a couple of the rock guys,
but very, very, very few of them. -
7:04 - 7:06So, I wouldn't worry about doing that.
-
7:06 - 7:08Very rare to bend
with the second finger as well; -
7:08 - 7:11it's possible,
Clapton does it a little bit. -
7:11 - 7:12You might want to practice doing that.
-
7:12 - 7:15I don't usually do bends
with the second finger. -
7:15 - 7:18So, if you're using your first finger,
you're going to pull down -
7:18 - 7:19and then add your vibrato.
-
7:19 - 7:23Most common bending with the third finger.
If you're new to this sort of stuff, -
7:23 - 7:27I would just recommned practicing
getting your bend with the third finger... -
7:27 - 7:30(Plays)
-
7:30 - 7:32And then let it relax and push it back up.
-
7:32 - 7:36Make sure you practice
all the parts of the guitar neck as well. -
7:37 - 7:42So, that's giving you a bit of a look
at how to apply vibrato to a bend. -
7:42 - 7:46Of course, the same rules apply that
we talked about with the basic vibrato, -
7:46 - 7:48making sure that you practice it
all around the neck, -
7:48 - 7:52because in each different part
it's going to feel a little different. -
7:52 - 7:55So, you don't want to just
try it in the one spot; practice it a lot. -
7:55 - 7:58As you're practicing it, try and
get it right in the one place first, -
7:58 - 8:01so you get the right feeling.
And then be moving it -
8:01 - 8:02right up, as far up as you can go,
-
8:02 - 8:06and down as low as you can go,
which is probably second or third fret, -
8:06 - 8:08you're not probably going to
do big bends in the first fret -
8:08 - 8:13unless you have fingers of steel or you're
Stevie Ray Vaughan or something like that. -
8:13 - 8:17So... I think that's probably enough
for you to get going on that... -
8:17 - 8:20If you've got any questions,
check out the forum, -
8:20 - 8:23look for the TE-009 area of the forum,
-
8:23 - 8:25and we'll get your questions
answered there. -
8:25 - 8:28I hope that helps, and...
See you again soon. -
8:28 - 8:30Bye bye
