-
Not Synced
The world is filled with
incredible objects
-
Not Synced
and rich cultural heritage.
-
Not Synced
And when we get access to them,
-
Not Synced
we are blown away, we fall in love.
-
Not Synced
But most of the time,
-
Not Synced
the world's population is living
without real access to arts and culture.
-
Not Synced
What might the connections be
-
Not Synced
when we start exploring our heritage,
-
Not Synced
the beautiful locations
and the art in this world.
-
Not Synced
Before we get started
in this presentation,
-
Not Synced
I just want to take care
of a few housekeeping points.
-
Not Synced
First, I am no expert in art or culture.
-
Not Synced
I fell into this by mistake,
but I'm loving it.
-
Not Synced
Secondly, all of what I'm going
to show you
-
Not Synced
belongs to the amazing museum's
archives and foundations
-
Not Synced
that we partner with.
-
Not Synced
None of this belongs to Google.
-
Not Synced
And finally, what you see
behind me
-
Not Synced
is available right now
on your mobile phones,
-
Not Synced
on your laptops.
-
Not Synced
This is a current platform
where you can explore
-
Not Synced
thousands of museums
and objects at your finger tips
-
Not Synced
in extremely high definition detail.
-
Not Synced
The diversity fo the content is what's
amazing.
-
Not Synced
If we just had European paintings,
-
Not Synced
if we just had modern art,
-
Not Synced
I think it gets a bit boring.
-
Not Synced
For example, we, this month,
launched the Black History channel
-
Not Synced
with 82 curated exhibitions,
-
Not Synced
which talk about arts and culture
in that community.
-
Not Synced
We also have some amazing objects
from Japan
-
Not Synced
around craftsmanship in Japan
called "Made in Japan".
-
Not Synced
And one of my favorite exhibitions,
-
Not Synced
which actually is the idea
of my talk,
-
Not Synced
is I didn't expect to become
a fan of Japanese dolls.
-
Not Synced
But, I am.
-
Not Synced
And thanks to this exhibition
that has really taught me
-
Not Synced
what is the craftsmanship
behind the soul of a Japanese doll.
-
Not Synced
Trust me, it's very exciting.
-
Not Synced
Take my word for it.
-
Not Synced
So, moving on swiftly,
-
Not Synced
one quick thing I wanted to showcase
in this platform,
-
Not Synced
which you can share with
your kids and your friends right now,
-
Not Synced
is you can travel to all these
amazing institutions virtually as well.
-
Not Synced
So one of our recent ideas was with
The Guggenheim Museum in New York
-
Not Synced
where you can actually get a taste
of what it might feel like
-
Not Synced
to actually be there.
-
Not Synced
You can actually go to the ground floor
-
Not Synced
and obviously, most of you, I assume,
have been there.
-
Not Synced
And you can see the architectural
masterpiece that it is.
-
Not Synced
But imagine this accesibility
for a kid in Bombay
-
Not Synced
who's studying architecture,
-
Not Synced
who hasn't had a chance
to go to The Guggenheim as yet.
-
Not Synced
You can obviously look at objects
in the Guggenheim Museum,
-
Not Synced
you can obviously get in to them
and so on and so forth.
-
Not Synced
There's a lot of information here.
-
Not Synced
But this is not the purpose
of my talk today.
-
Not Synced
This exists right now.
-
Not Synced
What we now have are
the building blocks
-
Not Synced
to a very exciting future
-
Not Synced
when it comes to arts and culture
-
Not Synced
and accessibility to arts and culture.
-
Not Synced
So I am joined today on stage
by my good friend and artist in residence
-
Not Synced
at our office in Paris, ?
-
Not Synced
who is the professor of interactive design
-
Not Synced
at Ecal University in
Lausanne, Switzerland.
-
Not Synced
What ? and our team of engineers
have been doing
-
Not Synced
is trying to find these connections
and visualize a few of these.
-
Not Synced
So I'm going to go quite quick now.
-
Not Synced
Just clarification:
-
Not Synced
Always, seeing the real thing
is better.
-
Not Synced
In case people try to think
I'm replicating the real thing.
-
Not Synced
So moving on,
-
Not Synced
this object you see behind me
-
Not Synced
is the Venus of Berekhat Ram.
-
Not Synced
It's one of the oldest objects
in the world,
-
Not Synced
around 233,000 years ago
-
Not Synced
found in the Golan Heights
-
Not Synced
and currently residing in
the Israel Museum in Jerusalem.
-
Not Synced
It is also one of the oldest objects
on our platform.
-
Not Synced
So let's zoom.
-
Not Synced
We start from this one object.
-
Not Synced
And what if we zoomed out
-
Not Synced
and actually tried to experience
our own cultural big bang.
-
Not Synced
What might that look like?
-
Not Synced
This is what we deal with
on a daily basis
-
Not Synced
at The Cultural Institute.
-
Not Synced
Over 6 million cultural artifacts
curated and given to us by institutions
-
Not Synced
to actually make these connections.
-
Not Synced
You can travel through time,
-
Not Synced
you can understand more
about our society through these.
-
Not Synced
You can obviously look at it
from the perspective of our planet
-
Not Synced
and try to see how it might look
without borders
-
Not Synced
if we just organized art and culture.
-
Not Synced
We can also, then, plot it by time,
-
Not Synced
which obviously, for the data geek
in me is very fascinating.
-
Not Synced
And you can spend hours looking
at every decade
-
Not Synced
and the contributions
in that decade and in those years
-
Not Synced
for art history and cultures.
-
Not Synced
We would love to spend hours
showing you each and every decade,
-
Not Synced
but we don't have the time right now.
-
Not Synced
So you can go on your phone
and actually do it yourseld.
-
Not Synced
(Applause)
-
Not Synced
But if you don't mind,
-
Not Synced
and you can hold your applause
'till later,
-
Not Synced
I don't want to run out of time
-
Not Synced
because I want to show you
a lot of really cool stuff.
-
Not Synced
(Laughter)
-
Not Synced
So just very quickly,
-
Not Synced
you can move on from here
-
Not Synced
to another very interesting idea.
-
Not Synced
Beyond the pretty picture,
-
Not Synced
beyond the nice visualization,
-
Not Synced
what is the purpose, how is this useful?
-
Not Synced
This next idea comes from
discussions with curators
-
Not Synced
that we've been having with museums,
-
Not Synced
who, by the way, I've fallen in love with
-
Not Synced
because they get their whole life
to actually try to tell these stories.
-
Not Synced
And one of the curators told me,
-
Not Synced
"Amit, what would it be like
-
Not Synced
if you could create
a virtual curator's table
-
Not Synced
where all these 6 million objects
-
Not Synced
are displayed in a way for us
to look at the connections between them.
-
Not Synced
And let's start --
-
Not Synced
you can spend a lot of time,
trust me, looking at different objects
-
Not Synced
and understanding where they come from,
-
Not Synced
it's a crazy matric experience.
-
Not Synced
Just moving on,
-
Not Synced
let's take the world-famous
Vincent Van Gogh
-
Not Synced
who is very well represented
on this platform.
-
Not Synced
Thanks to the diversity
of the institutions we have,
-
Not Synced
we have over 211 high-definition,
amazing artworks by this artist
-
Not Synced
now organized in one
beautiful view.
-
Not Synced
And as it ?
-
Not Synced
and as the seril goes deeper
-
Not Synced
you can see all the self-portraits,
-
Not Synced
you can see still life.
-
Not Synced
But I just wanted to highlight
one very quick example
-
Not Synced
which is very timely:
-
Not Synced
The Bedroom.
-
Not Synced
This is an artwork where
three copies exist.
-
Not Synced
One at the Van Gogh Museum
in Amsterdam,
-
Not Synced
one at the d'Orsay in Paris,
-
Not Synced
and one at the Art Institute
in Chicago,
-
Not Synced
which actually is currently hosting
a reunion
-
Not Synced
of all three artworks physically,
-
Not Synced
I think only for the second time ever.
-
Not Synced
But, it is united digitally and virtually
for anybody to look at
-
Not Synced
in a very different way,
-
Not Synced
and you won't get pushed
in the line in the crowd.
-
Not Synced
So let's take you and let's travel
through the bedroom
-
Not Synced
very quickly so you can
experience
-
Not Synced
what we are doing for
every single object.
-
Not Synced
We want the image to speak
as much as it can
-
Not Synced
on a digital platform.
-
Not Synced
And all you need is
an internet connection and a computer
-
Not Synced
(Applause)
-
Not Synced
And Seril, if you can go deeper, quickly.
-
Not Synced
I'm sorry, this is all live,
-
Not Synced
so you have to give Seril
a little bit of --
-
Not Synced
and this is available for every object:
-
Not Synced
modern art, contemporary art,
renaissance -- you name it,
-
Not Synced
even sculpture.
-
Not Synced
Sometimes, you don't know
what can attract you
-
Not Synced
to an artwork or to a museum
or to a cultural discovery.
-
Not Synced
So for me personally,
-
Not Synced
it was quite a challenge
-
Not Synced
because when I to make this
my full-time job at Google,
-
Not Synced
my mother was not very supportive.
-
Not Synced
I love my mother,
-
Not Synced
but she thought I was wasting my life
with this museum stuff.
-
Not Synced
And for her, a museum is what
you do when you go on vacation
-
Not Synced
and you tick-mark and it's over, right?
-
Not Synced
And so, it took about 4 and a half years
-
Not Synced
for me to convince my lovely
Indian mother
-
Not Synced
that actually, this is worthwhile.
-
Not Synced
And the way I did it
-
Not Synced
was I realized one day that she
loves gold,
-
Not Synced
and so I started showing her objects
-
Not Synced
that have the material gold in them
-
Not Synced
and the first thing my mom
asks me is,
-
Not Synced
"How can we buy these?"
-
Not Synced
(Laughter)
-
Not Synced
And obviously, my salary is not that high
-
Not Synced
so I was like, "We can't actually
do that, mom.
-
Not Synced
But you can explore them virtually."
-
Not Synced
And so now my mom --
-
Not Synced
every time I meet she's like,
"Any more gold,
-
Not Synced
any more silver in your project?
-
Not Synced
Can you show me?"
-
Not Synced
And that's the idea I'm trying
to illustrate.
-
Not Synced
It does not matter how you get in,
-
Not Synced
as long as you get in.
-
Not Synced
Once you get in, you're hooked.
-
Not Synced
Moving on from here very quickly,
-
Not Synced
there is kind of a playful idea,
actually,
-
Not Synced
to illustrate the point of access,
-
Not Synced
and I'm going to go quite quickly
on this one.
-
Not Synced
We all know that seeing the artwork
in-person is amazing.
-
Not Synced
But we also know that most of us
can't do it,
-
Not Synced
and the ones that can afford to do it,
-
Not Synced
it's complicated.
-
Not Synced
So Seril, can we just load up
our art trip,
-
Not Synced
what do we call it?
-
Not Synced
We don't have a good name for this.
-
Not Synced
But essentially, let's. --
-
Not Synced
so we have around 1,000
amazing institutions, 60 countries.
-
Not Synced
But let's start with Rembrandt,
-
Not Synced
we might have time for only
one example.
-
Not Synced
But thanks to the diversity,
-
Not Synced
we have around 500 amazing
Rembrandt object artworks
-
Not Synced
from 46 institutions
and 17 countries.
-
Not Synced
And let's say you on your next vacation
-
Not Synced
want to go see every single one of them.
-
Not Synced
That is your itinerary,
-
Not Synced
you will probably travel
53,000 kilometers,
-
Not Synced
visit around, I think,
46 institutions,
-
Not Synced
and just FYI, you might release
10 tons of CO2 emissions.
-
Not Synced
(Laughter)
-
Not Synced
But remember, it's art,
-
Not Synced
so you can justify it, perhaps,
in some way.
-
Not Synced
Moving on swiftly from here
-
Not Synced
is something a little bit more
technical and more interesting.
-
Not Synced
So all that we've shown you so far
uses metadata to make the connections.
-
Not Synced
But obviously we have something
cool nowadays
-
Not Synced
that everyone likes to talk about
called machine-learning.
-
Not Synced
And so what we thought is,
-
Not Synced
"Let's strip out all the metadata,
-
Not Synced
let's look at what machine-learning
can do
-
Not Synced
based on visual recognition of
this entire collection."
-
Not Synced
And what we ended up with
is this very interesting map,
-
Not Synced
these clusters
