Triad Chords #2of3 (Guitar Lesson CH-008) How to play
-
0:09 - 0:10So.
-
0:10 - 0:11If we take our sequence
-
0:11 - 0:13G, C, G, D
-
0:13 - 0:16what we need to learn now is how to move
our triad shape around. -
0:16 - 0:19So, the very first one that we looked at,
-
0:19 - 0:20the very first shape,
-
0:20 - 0:21. . .
-
0:21 - 0:23the one down on the 3rd fret,
-
0:23 - 0:24we already talked about that the root note
-
0:24 - 0:27was the note on the thinnest string
-
0:27 - 0:29at the 3rd fret.
-
0:29 - 0:31So, that chord becomes G
-
0:31 - 0:34because the note at the third fret on the thinnest string is the note G.
-
0:34 - 0:36So, that becomes G chord
-
0:36 - 0:39or G Major, or G Major triad,
you can call it what you like, -
0:39 - 0:41or just G is OK as well.
-
0:42 - 0:43So, that's G, now.
-
0:43 - 0:47Let's say that we want to use that same shape
and make it a C chord. -
0:47 - 0:48Now, the thing that you...
-
0:48 - 0:50The importance of knowing
where your root note is that -
0:50 - 0:53all you have to do is move that
root note to the note C -
0:53 - 0:56and you've got yourself a C chord. So,
-
0:56 - 0:58the root note was on the
thinnest string at the third fret, -
0:58 - 1:00that was the note G.
-
1:00 - 1:02Now, hopefully most of you
are starting to get to know -
1:02 - 1:04the names of the notes on the guitar.
-
1:04 - 1:05It's really, really important.
If you're not, -
1:05 - 1:07you definitely want to go
to check out the web site -
1:07 - 1:09and suss out some ways to do that.
-
1:09 - 1:11The note C
-
1:11 - 1:13is found at the 8th fret
-
1:13 - 1:14on the thinnest string.
-
1:14 - 1:16So now we're just going to use that same
-
1:16 - 1:18-- I'm kind of going to call it shape one --
-
1:18 - 1:20the same shape that we started off with in G
-
1:20 - 1:21down at the 3rd fret.
-
1:21 - 1:22. . .
-
1:22 - 1:24We now move it up to the 8th fret
-
1:24 - 1:25. . .
-
1:25 - 1:27And we've got our C chord.
-
1:28 - 1:29So, G down at the 3rd fret:
-
1:29 - 1:31. . .
-
1:31 - 1:328th fret:
-
1:32 - 1:33. . .
-
1:33 - 1:34C chord.
-
1:34 - 1:36Now, we said our progression
was going to back to G, -
1:36 - 1:38so back all the way to the 3rd fret:
-
1:38 - 1:39. . .
-
1:39 - 1:41And now we want a D chord.
-
1:41 - 1:43Now, hopefully most of you know that
-
1:43 - 1:44D is one tone higher than C.
-
1:44 - 1:46So, if C was at the 8th fret,
-
1:46 - 1:48D must be at the 10th fret.
-
1:48 - 1:49. . .
-
1:49 - 1:52We're just going to strum the chord once,
-
1:52 - 1:53just so you can hear what is going on.
-
1:53 - 1:54So, we'd be going G:
-
1:54 - 1:55. . .
-
1:55 - 1:572, 3, up to C:
-
1:57 - 1:59C (plays)
-
1:59 - 2:002, 3, 4
-
2:00 - 2:02back to G (plays)
-
2:02 - 2:042, 3, and up to D
-
2:04 - 2:05. . .
-
2:05 - 2:082, 3, 4.
-
2:08 - 2:09G (plays)
-
2:09 - 2:102, 3, 4
-
2:10 - 2:12Up to C (plays)
-
2:12 - 2:142, 3, 4
-
2:14 - 2:15Back to G (plays)
-
2:15 - 2:172, 3, 4
-
2:17 - 2:18And up to D (plays)
-
2:18 - 2:212, 3, 4.
-
2:21 - 2:23Now, what you want to try
and have it a go at now is -
2:23 - 2:25getting your mate or, you know,
-
2:25 - 2:27your buddy or, if you've got a
recording device, record yourslef -
2:27 - 2:29just playing G (plays).
-
2:29 - 2:31In fact, I'll play rhythm guitar now.
-
2:31 - 2:34I'm changing the lesson all the way through this time!
This is quite funny. -
2:34 - 2:36So, I'm going to play now the sequence
-
2:36 - 2:38G, C, G and D
-
2:38 - 2:40And what I want you to try and do is
-
2:40 - 2:41move your chord and go:
-
2:41 - 2:44G from there, up to the C (plays),
-
2:44 - 2:45back to the G (plays)
-
2:45 - 2:46and up to the D (plays).
-
2:46 - 2:47So here we go:
-
2:47 - 2:473
-
2:47 - 2:484
-
2:48 - 2:49G
-
2:49 - 2:50. . .
-
2:50 - 2:51To C.
-
2:51 - 2:53. . .
-
2:53 - 2:54Back to G.
-
2:54 - 2:55. . .
-
2:55 - 2:56And up to D.
-
2:56 - 2:57. . .
-
2:57 - 3:00Now, I'll do it again, so you should be
in third fret now. -
3:00 - 3:01. . .
-
3:01 - 3:02and then you're going to move up
to the 8th fret. -
3:02 - 3:03. . .
-
3:03 - 3:05Back to the 3rd fret.
-
3:05 - 3:06. . .
-
3:06 - 3:07And then up to the 10th fret.
-
3:07 - 3:10. . .
-
3:10 - 3:12And you finish on the G.
-
3:12 - 3:14Now, you can either just strum this chord,
-
3:14 - 3:15just like here (plays):
-
3:15 - 3:172, 3, 4
-
3:17 - 3:17And then up to C (plays).
-
3:17 - 3:19Or you can make a pattern,
-
3:19 - 3:20You could go:
-
3:20 - 3:21. . .
-
3:21 - 3:22And then to C:
-
3:22 - 3:23. . .
-
3:23 - 3:244
-
3:24 - 3:251 and, 2 and, 3
-
3:25 - 3:264
-
3:26 - 3:281 and, 2 and, 3
-
3:28 - 3:284
-
3:28 - 3:29You can do it anyway you want.
-
3:29 - 3:30You could go:
-
3:30 - 3:35. . .
-
3:35 - 3:37It doesn't really matter.
-
3:37 - 3:39You can kind of play about with the rhythm
a little bit yourself. -
3:39 - 3:41In fact, that's one of the things that will
keep it interesting -
3:41 - 3:42if you're jamming with your buddy
-
3:42 - 3:44and he's playing the chords
-
3:44 - 3:46and you get to play about with the triads,
-
3:46 - 3:47it kind of makes it fun.
-
3:47 - 3:50You'll find that the sound that I've got
has a little bit of delay on it -
3:50 - 3:52and I think a little bit of chorus as well.
-
3:52 - 3:55And that kind of sound is nice one:
-
3:55 - 3:56a clean guitar sound playing triads,
-
3:56 - 3:59while an acoustic guitar plays the chords:
-
3:59 - 4:01Bellissimo!
-
4:01 - 4:02Beautiful, beautiful sound.
-
4:02 - 4:06So, that's something you want to have
a little bit of play about with. -
4:06 - 4:07Just experiment with the
rhythm that you use. -
4:07 - 4:09Now, that's just using shape one,
-
4:09 - 4:11but we've got three shapes
that we can deal with. -
4:11 - 4:12So, the second shape
-
4:12 - 4:15that we looked at was the one...
the G chord -
4:15 - 4:17based around the 7th fret.
-
4:17 - 4:19. . .
-
4:19 - 4:23Now, in that shape, the root note was
on the second string. -
4:23 - 4:24. . .
-
4:24 - 4:28That's the note G, and the reason
that this is a G chord, -
4:28 - 4:29or a G triad,
-
4:29 - 4:32is because third finger in this case
is on the root note, -
4:32 - 4:35which is the note G at the 8th fret
of the 2nd string. -
4:35 - 4:38Now, we are going to stick with our
same little chord sequence -
4:38 - 4:41G, C, G, D.
-
4:41 - 4:43So, if we want to move this one
-
4:43 - 4:44to a C chord
-
4:44 - 4:47we have to put the note on the 2nd string
-
4:47 - 4:49onto the note C.
-
4:49 - 4:51So, those of you who now, get to it now.
-
4:51 - 4:52Those of you who don't
-
4:52 - 4:55we're going to now move that third finger
-
4:55 - 4:57up to the 13th fret
-
4:57 - 4:59of the 2nd string.
-
4:59 - 5:00. . .
-
5:00 - 5:02That would now be a C chord.
-
5:02 - 5:04So, your hand is now up to the 12th fret.
-
5:04 - 5:05. . .
-
5:05 - 5:08Now we go back to G,
which is based around the 7th fret. -
5:08 - 5:09. . .
-
5:09 - 5:11With the root note on 8th fret, of course.
-
5:11 - 5:12Not forgetting where the root note is.
-
5:12 - 5:15Knowing the root note is the most important thing about this exercise.
-
5:15 - 5:16. . .
-
5:16 - 5:18And then, if we want to go to a D chord,
-
5:18 - 5:20Well, we've got our little D chord (plays)
-
5:20 - 5:21Hey hey!
-
5:21 - 5:22You already know...
-
5:22 - 5:23You probably already familiar with D chord,
-
5:23 - 5:25at least you should be, if you're now
doing this lesson on triads. -
5:25 - 5:26So.
-
5:26 - 5:28And that one would be,
of course, the root note -
5:28 - 5:30on the 3rd fret of the 2nd string.
-
5:30 - 5:31And...
-
5:31 - 5:34I mean, it wouldn't hurt if you played
the open D string as well, -
5:34 - 5:36like a regular D chord, but
-
5:36 - 5:38for this exercise I'd recommend that you don't.
-
5:38 - 5:40Just play the three strings
that your fingers are on. -
5:40 - 5:41So, in this one,
-
5:41 - 5:44you use the same sequence as before,
-
5:44 - 5:46we're going to have G
-
5:46 - 5:47. . .
-
5:47 - 5:482, 3
-
5:48 - 5:49Up to C.
-
5:49 - 5:51(plays) 1, 2, 3
-
5:51 - 5:52Back to G.
-
5:52 - 5:55(plays) 2, 3
-
5:55 - 5:56And then all the way down to D.
-
5:56 - 5:58(plays) 2, 3 and
-
5:58 - 5:59Through that again:
-
5:59 - 6:02(plays) G, 2, 3.
-
6:02 - 6:03All the way up to C, 12th fret,
-
6:03 - 6:05(plays) 2, 3
-
6:05 - 6:07and then back to the 7th fret,
-
6:07 - 6:08. . .
-
6:08 - 6:09for the G chord,
-
6:09 - 6:10and then down to the 2nd fret for D.
-
6:10 - 6:11. . .
-
6:11 - 6:14And then through this.
-
6:14 - 6:15And so on.
-
6:15 - 6:17And again, you could change
just the rhythm of it. -
6:17 - 6:18You don't have to
just do this one strum, -
6:18 - 6:21if you want to change the rhythm
or pick out the notes individually -
6:21 - 6:22that will sound cool.
-
6:22 - 6:24Now, I'm going to play
the chords again for you, -
6:24 - 6:26just so you can practice
-
6:26 - 6:27moving that little triad shape
-
6:27 - 6:29from one part of the neck to the other.
-
6:29 - 6:31So, we are using the one that
looks like a D chord. -
6:31 - 6:33We're going to be moving it...
-
6:33 - 6:34I'm going to talk about
the root notes now. -
6:34 - 6:36The root note is at the
8th fret for the first shape, -
6:36 - 6:38for the G chord:
-
6:38 - 6:39. . .
-
6:39 - 6:40The root note is at the
13th fret for the C chord: -
6:40 - 6:42. . .
-
6:42 - 6:43Back to the 8th fret:
-
6:43 - 6:44. . .
-
6:44 - 6:47And down to the 3rd fret:
-
6:47 - 6:49. . .
-
6:49 - 6:52So, last time through I was
describing where the first finger sat. -
6:52 - 6:54That time I'm talking about
where the root note is. -
6:54 - 6:56What fret the root note is on,
-
6:56 - 6:58because that's the bit
I really want you to remember. -
6:58 - 7:00So, here we go, I'll play the chords now,
-
7:00 - 7:03and I'm going to be calling
the fret that the root note is in, -
7:03 - 7:05which is the note that you'll be playing
-
7:05 - 7:07in this case with your third finger.
-
7:07 - 7:09So. Important: check out the shapes,
-
7:09 - 7:11make sure you know where they are
-
7:11 - 7:12and then have a go at playing along.
-
7:12 - 7:13Here we go:
-
7:13 - 7:14So, 3, 4. G Chord.
-
7:14 - 7:16. . .
-
7:16 - 7:17That was at the 8th fret.
-
7:17 - 7:18To C.
-
7:18 - 7:19Right up in the 13th fret you should be now.
-
7:19 - 7:21Back to G.
-
7:21 - 7:22. . .
-
7:22 - 7:23To the root note at the 8th.
-
7:23 - 7:24To D.
-
7:24 - 7:25. . .
-
7:25 - 7:26And again.
-
7:26 - 7:27. . .
-
7:27 - 7:29You should be at the 8th fret now.
-
7:29 - 7:30You're going to C.
-
7:30 - 7:31. . .
-
7:31 - 7:31Right up to the 13th.
-
7:31 - 7:32Back to G.
-
7:32 - 7:33. . .
-
7:33 - 7:34Which had the root note in the 8th.
-
7:34 - 7:35And then to D.
-
7:35 - 7:36. . .
-
7:36 - 7:42The third shape that we talked about,
-
7:42 - 7:42I'll be calling it shape 3,
-
7:42 - 7:46is the one that's kind of based around
the 10th or 12th fret, -
7:46 - 7:48and the root note is on the 3rd string,
-
7:48 - 7:50so we've got our third finger
-
7:50 - 7:52on the root note, little finger underneath,
-
7:52 - 7:54and first finger back in the 10th fret.
-
7:54 - 7:56So, it's going 12-12-10.
-
7:56 - 7:58And that is the G chord.
-
7:58 - 7:59. . .
-
7:59 - 8:01Now, if we want to change that one to
-
8:01 - 8:02a C chord,
-
8:02 - 8:05we need to find the note C
on the 3rd string. -
8:05 - 8:08So, again,
-
8:08 - 8:09those of you who know where that is,
go to it now, -
8:09 - 8:12and for those of you who don't,
-
8:12 - 8:15we're going to slide our shape
right down here, -
8:15 - 8:17because the note C is the 5th fret
of the 3rd string. -
8:17 - 8:19So we are using that
same shape again: -
8:19 - 8:21. . .
-
8:21 - 8:22And we've got our little C chord.
-
8:22 - 8:23And then we go back to G:
-
8:23 - 8:26. . .
-
8:26 - 8:27With the root note on the 12th fret.
-
8:27 - 8:29And then we've got to get to D.
-
8:29 - 8:30Hopefully you remember,
-
8:30 - 8:31D is just one tone
-
8:31 - 8:33or two semitones, two frets,
-
8:33 - 8:34higher than the C.
-
8:34 - 8:37So that would put the root note
at the 7th fret. -
8:37 - 8:38. . .
-
8:38 - 8:40First finger is obviously going to be
in the 5th fret for that one. -
8:40 - 8:43So, it's just going 7-7-5.
-
8:43 - 8:46And again, we take it through that
same sequence again, -
8:46 - 8:48So this time we have
-
8:48 - 8:49G
-
8:49 - 8:50. . .
-
8:50 - 8:51down to C
-
8:51 - 8:53. . .
-
8:53 - 8:54back to G
-
8:54 - 8:55. . .
-
8:55 - 8:56and then down to D
-
8:56 - 8:58. . .
-
8:58 - 8:59Here we go again:
-
8:59 - 9:00G
-
9:00 - 9:01. . .
-
9:01 - 9:01Down to C
-
9:01 - 9:03. . .
-
9:03 - 9:04Back up to G
-
9:04 - 9:05. . .
-
9:05 - 9:06And then to D
-
9:06 - 9:08. . .
-
9:08 - 9:10OK, here we go,
-
9:10 - 9:11I'm going to play some
chords for you now -
9:11 - 9:13to have a go at moving that around,
-
9:13 - 9:14Here we go, so:
-
9:14 - 9:152, 3, 4
-
9:15 - 9:16G:
-
9:16 - 9:18. . .
-
9:18 - 9:19Sliding it down to C:
-
9:19 - 9:21. . .
-
9:21 - 9:22Back to G:
-
9:22 - 9:24. . .
-
9:24 - 9:25And then up to the D chord:
-
9:25 - 9:26. . .
-
9:26 - 9:27or rather DOWN to the D chord.
-
9:27 - 9:28. . .
-
9:28 - 9:29G
-
9:29 - 9:30. . .
-
9:30 - 9:30Over the C.
-
9:30 - 9:31. . .
-
9:31 - 9:33Down the... root note at the 5th string...
-
9:33 - 9:345th fret.
-
9:34 - 9:35Back up to G:
-
9:35 - 9:36. . .
-
9:36 - 9:39And then to the D.
