Robert Adamss black-and-white photographs document scenes of the American West, revealing the impact of human activity on the last vestiges of wilderness and open space. An underlying tension in Adamss body of work is the contradiction between landscapes visibly transformed or scarred by human presence and the inherent beauty of light and land rendered by the camera.

Robert Adams is featured in the Season 4 (2007) episode Ecology of the Art:21—Art in the Twenty-First Century television series on PBS.

Credo sia vero.

Può sembrare una pazzia dirlo, ma nella mia camera oscura in Colorado,

dopo aver lavorato per giorni, e a volte anche mesi fuori, e se lavorassi nella camera oscura,

e sapessi che è giorno, giuro che potrei dire, anche se sono nella camera oscura,

quando il sole entra ed esce da dietro le nuvole.

La luce è qualcosa di fisico su cui lavoriamo.

Naturalmente è anche una metafora. È quello su cui si lavora per arrivare alla metafora.

È il secolare simbolo della verità. È l'espressione della verità.

Sì, è carica di significati, ma fondamentalmente,

è solo un ingrediente profondamente misterioso, potente e vitale

per la comprensione della vita e la risposta a essa.

Non so se potrei dire qualcos'altro.

È la base del perché e del come fare fotografia.
