THE BOOK OF THE APOSTLES - The Normal Christian Life - Faith Is Obedience

  • 0:02 - 0:04
    The Call of Jesus
  • 0:05 - 0:10
    Welcome to lesson 18
    "The Book of the Apostles".
  • 0:10 - 0:14
I love talking about the Book of the Apostles,
    the Book of Acts,
  • 0:14 - 0:17
as we see in the New Testament.
  • 0:17 - 0:22
    Here we have the Bible,
the Old Testament, the New Testament.
  • 0:22 - 0:25
    And in the New Testament
we start with the four gospels:
  • 0:25 - 0:28
    Matthew, Mark, Luke, John.
    Amazing.
  • 0:28 - 0:33
In those four gospels we read about Jesus,
how He walked around here on earth.
  • 0:33 - 0:38
All four gospels end up with Jesus dying
and how He rose up again.
  • 0:38 - 0:42
And then, after the four gospels
we have the Book of Acts,
  • 0:42 - 0:44
    the Book of the Apostles.
  • 0:45 - 0:47
It is a very special book
  • 0:47 - 0:52
because the Book of the Apostles
    is the only historical book
  • 0:52 - 0:55
we have from the early church,
    here in the Bible,
  • 0:55 - 1:00
where we read about how they
were living the life of Christ,
  • 1:00 - 1:04
how they obeyed the call of Jesus.
  • 1:04 - 1:07
We are now living after the cross.
  • 1:07 - 1:12
We are now living in an amazing time
    that was prophesied about,
  • 1:13 - 1:15
    many, many, many years ago.
  • 1:15 - 1:21
When Jesus was hanging on the cross,
    He said: "It is finished!"
  • 1:21 - 1:24
    What is finished?
    What was finished?
  • 1:24 - 1:26
    Or what has begun?
  • 1:26 - 1:32
    The old thing was finished
    and something new has begun.
  • 1:32 - 1:40
    We, when you understand it,
we are living in an amazing time today,
  • 1:40 - 1:45
a time that was prophesied about
    many hundreds years ago.
  • 1:46 - 1:52
    For example, Ezekiel and Jeremiah,
    400 years BC prophesied about
  • 1:52 - 1:55
the time we today are living in.
  • 1:55 - 2:01
    Ezekiel prophesied this
    in Ezekiel 11:19-20:
  • 2:02 - 2:07
"I will give them an undivided heart
    and put a spirit in them;
  • 2:07 - 2:13
I will remove from them their heart
of stone and give them a heart of flesh.
  • 2:13 - 2:18
Then they will follow My decrees
and be careful to keep My laws.
  • 2:18 - 2:22
    They will be My people,
and I will be their God."
  • 2:22 - 2:28
    Listen to these words.
    These words Ezekiel prophesied
  • 2:28 - 2:34
400 years BC is something we today
    are living in.
  • 2:34 - 2:39
In the time Jesus was walking on earth,
    in Matthew, Mark, Luke, John,
  • 2:39 - 2:40
    they did not experience it.
  • 2:40 - 2:43
    Why? Because they were still
    before the cross.
  • 2:43 - 2:50
    When Jesus walked on earth
He could not give them the new spirit
  • 2:50 - 2:52
    Ezekiel prophesied about.
  • 2:52 - 2:57
But after He ascended to Heaven,
He sent His Holy Spirit down here,
  • 2:57 - 3:00
and we are living in this exciting time.
  • 3:00 - 3:04
We, in Christ, can be forgiven,
  • 3:04 - 3:10
and we, in Christ, can get a relationship
with God where we can know Him.
  • 3:10 - 3:13
In the Old Testament it was only
    for a few.
  • 3:13 - 3:17
It was only for the prophets
    and a few selected people.
  • 3:17 - 3:24
But now, in the time we are living in,
God will pour out His Spirit on all flesh.
  • 3:25 - 3:27
Last time we looked at religion.
  • 3:27 - 3:32
Religion tries to change a person and
make a person looks nice outside.
  • 3:33 - 3:37
But Jesus is giving a new heart.
  • 3:37 - 3:39
Jesus is putting a new spirit in us.
  • 3:39 - 3:44
Jesus is doing what we have just
    read about.
  • 3:44 - 3:48
And one thing I really love about
    the Book of Acts.
  • 3:48 - 3:53
In the Book of Acts we see this
    being fulfilled.
  • 3:53 - 3:58
We see in the Book of Acts
how the early church, after the cross,
  • 3:58 - 4:00
    was preaching the gospel.
  • 4:00 - 4:05
We also see how they responded
to the gospel they have heard.
  • 4:05 - 4:08
We also see how they got born again.
  • 4:08 - 4:15
The Book of Acts gives a lot of examples,
pictures of how the early church
  • 4:15 - 4:19
    was obeying Christ,
how the believers were obeying Christ,
  • 4:19 - 4:23
how they actually went out in that harvest
    that was ready,
  • 4:23 - 4:26
how they found that person of peace.
  • 4:26 - 4:29
    For example, Acts 10,
    with Peter and Cornelius,
  • 4:29 - 4:33
or Acts 16, with Paul and Lydia.
  • 4:33 - 4:37
    There are clear, clear examples
    in the Book of Acts
  • 4:37 - 4:43
how they continued the work of Christ.
  • 4:43 - 4:49
The Book of Acts is like a mirror where
we see how the early church was living,
  • 4:49 - 4:50
    how they obeyed Christ.
  • 4:50 - 4:53
    It is like a diary.
  • 4:54 - 4:58
There was a time in my life
where I looked at my life,
  • 4:59 - 5:03
    and I was a Christian,
I loved Jesus, and I was radical,
  • 5:03 - 5:07
    and I went to church,
and I did a lot of good things there.
  • 5:07 - 5:10
But then I started to see
    the Book of Acts.
  • 5:10 - 5:15
And my life did not, at all,
looked like the Book of Acts.
  • 5:15 - 5:19
    I dressed up every Sunday,
    I went to church,
  • 5:19 - 5:21
I was even doing a few preaching
    in the church,
  • 5:21 - 5:23
and I was helping in the church,
  • 5:23 - 5:26
but I was not led by the Holy Spirit
    like we read here,
  • 5:26 - 5:29
I did not lead people to Christ,
    like we read here,
  • 5:29 - 5:32
I did not baptize people in water and
Holy Spirit, like we read here,
  • 5:32 - 5:35
I did not cast out demons and heal the sick,
    like we read here.
  • 5:35 - 5:41
So, I had religion in one hand
and I had the life in the other hand.
  • 5:41 - 5:43
And there was a mistake somewhere.
  • 5:43 - 5:47
And I believe the mistake is not found
    in the Bible.
  • 5:47 - 5:49
The mistake is found in our life.
  • 5:49 - 5:51
So, I needed to change something.
  • 5:51 - 5:54
    I needed to change something,
    and I did it.
  • 5:54 - 5:56
I changed something in my life.
  • 5:56 - 6:03
And now, my life looks so much more
like what we read here, in the Book of Acts.
  • 6:04 - 6:08
One of the things I needed to change
    was obedience.
  • 6:08 - 6:11
    We need obedience.
  • 6:11 - 6:14
    Faith is obedience.
  • 6:16 - 6:19
    You don't have faith
    if you don't have obedience.
  • 6:19 - 6:22
Try to imagine if I'm standing
in the middle of a road here
  • 6:22 - 6:25
and there is a truck coming
from a side, and I don't see the truck.
  • 6:25 - 6:28
The truck is coming in full speed
    towards me.
  • 6:28 - 6:32
    And you are standing there,
    on the side road,
  • 6:32 - 6:37
and you see the truck and you shout:
Torben! Move! Move! A truck is coming!
  • 6:37 - 6:39
    And I look at you.
  • 6:39 - 6:40
    I believe you.
  • 6:40 - 6:41
    I believe you are real.
  • 6:42 - 6:43
    I believe you exist.
  • 6:43 - 6:44
    I believe in your words.
  • 6:45 - 6:46
    And stand still.
  • 6:47 - 6:48
    No, it doesn't make sense.
    Why?
  • 6:48 - 6:53
Because if I believe in you,
    in your words,
  • 6:54 - 6:56
    I will move.
  • 6:56 - 7:01
I will not be able to believe
what you are saying and stand still.
  • 7:01 - 7:02
Yeah, only if I want to die.
  • 7:03 - 7:06
But if I want to survive,
and I believe in you -
  • 7:06 - 7:09
    I need to move.
  • 7:09 - 7:14
Why? Because to have faith in you
is not to have faith that you are real,
  • 7:14 - 7:16
    that you walk on earth.
  • 7:17 - 7:21
No. I have to have faith in your words.
  • 7:21 - 7:26
Like, to believe in Christ is not only
to believe that He one time lived.
  • 7:26 - 7:28
    It is to believe Christ.
  • 7:28 - 7:30
    Believe His words.
  • 7:30 - 7:35
And if we believe His words
    we move.
  • 7:35 - 7:37
    We obey His words.
  • 7:37 - 7:42
That is the only way we can, actually,
    show that we believe.
  • 7:42 - 7:46
    Faith without obedience is dead.
  • 7:46 - 7:52
And it's so clear. I want to read
the following from the book of James.
  • 7:52 - 7:55
And when you read these words here,
  • 7:55 - 7:58
it's so important to understand that
    when we talk about works,
  • 7:58 - 8:01
it's not talking about works of the law.
  • 8:01 - 8:07
It's not about trying to earn
    our salvation, because we cannot.
  • 8:07 - 8:10
It's not about trying to obey the law
  • 8:10 - 8:14
and then we obey so good that we are saved.
    No.
  • 8:14 - 8:17
It's not talking about works by the law,
  • 8:17 - 8:22
but it's talking about obedience /
    works by faith.
  • 8:22 - 8:27
And this is what we need.
    James 2:14-26:
  • 8:28 - 8:31
"What good is it, my brothers and sisters,
  • 8:31 - 8:36
if someone claims to have faith
    but not have deeds
  • 8:36 - 8:37
    (or works, or obedience)?
  • 8:37 - 8:40
    Can such faith save them?
  • 8:40 - 8:45
Suppose a brother or sister is
    without clothes and daily food.
  • 8:45 - 8:51
If one of you say to them,
'Go in peace; keep warm and well fed,'
  • 8:51 - 8:56
but does nothing about the physical needs,
    what good is it?
  • 8:56 - 9:02
In the same way, faith by itself,
if it is not accomplished by action
  • 9:02 - 9:06
    (or obedience), is dead.
    But someone will say,
  • 9:06 - 9:09
'You have faith, and I have deeds.'
  • 9:09 - 9:15
Show me then your faith without deeds,
and I will show you my faith by my deeds.
  • 9:15 - 9:18
You believe that there is one God.
    Good!
  • 9:18 - 9:21
Even the demons believe that -
    and shudder.
  • 9:21 - 9:28
You foolish person, do you want evidence
that faith without deeds is useless?
  • 9:28 - 9:34
Was not our father Abraham considered
    righteous for what he did
  • 9:34 - 9:37
when he offered his son Isaac
    on the altar?
  • 9:37 - 9:42
You see that his faith and his actions
    were working together,
  • 9:42 - 9:47
and his faith was made complete
    by what he did.
  • 9:47 - 9:52
And the scripture was fulfilled that says,
    'Abraham believed God,
  • 9:52 - 9:57
and it was credited him to righteousness,'
and he was called God's friend.
  • 9:57 - 10:06
You see that a person is considered righteous
by what he does and not by faith alone.
  • 10:06 - 10:11
In the same way, was not even Rahab
    the prostitute considered righteous
  • 10:11 - 10:15
    for what she did
when she gave lodging to the spies
  • 10:15 - 10:17
and sent them off in a different direction?
  • 10:17 - 10:20
As the body without the spirit is dead,
  • 10:20 - 10:27
    so faith without (obedience, works)
    deeds is dead."
  • 10:28 - 10:31
    These were not my words.
  • 10:31 - 10:33
    That was the Bible.
  • 10:33 - 10:39
    Faith without obedience (works)
    is dead.
  • 10:39 - 10:43
    Faith alone is dead.
  • 10:43 - 10:47
    We are not talking about
faith + works by the law,
  • 10:47 - 10:53
but we are talking about real faith
    that leads to obedience.
  • 10:53 - 10:59
    If you believe in Jesus,
and Jesus says: "A truck is coming! Move!"
  • 10:59 - 11:01
    - then you move.
  • 11:01 - 11:05
Why? Unless you want to die,
    then you move.
  • 11:05 - 11:07
    Now Jesus doesn't just say:
    "A truck is coming!"
  • 11:07 - 11:09
    He said many other things.
  • 11:09 - 11:12
    And what we read here
    we need to obey.
  • 11:12 - 11:17
And when we start to obey
    the call of Jesus
  • 11:17 - 11:19
    and start to step out
    on His words,
  • 11:19 - 11:22
our life is going to look like
    the Book of Acts.
  • 11:22 - 11:24
Why? Because Jesus is the same
    yesterday, today and forever.
  • 11:24 - 11:28
But if you don't obey Jesus' words,
  • 11:28 - 11:33
if you don't have true, biblical faith
in Christ, and therefore don't obey,
  • 11:33 - 11:36
of course your life will look like this,
  • 11:36 - 11:38
    while the Book of Acts
    will be like this.
  • 11:39 - 11:43
So, take some time and really
go through the Book of Acts
  • 11:44 - 11:49
and see their life, how they obeyed
    the call of Christ.
  • 11:49 - 11:54
    See how they were preaching
    repentance, baptism in water
  • 11:54 - 11:56
and baptism with the Holy Spirit.
  • 11:56 - 11:59
And as we said last time,
    you don't see a sinner's prayer.
  • 11:59 - 12:01
Many of the things we do today
    in the churches
  • 12:01 - 12:04
we don't see in the Book of Acts.
  • 12:04 - 12:07
Many of those things we do today
    in the churches
  • 12:07 - 12:10
we don't see in the Book of Acts,
    and sadly,
  • 12:10 - 12:12
    many things that were done
    in the Book of Acts
  • 12:12 - 12:14
many don't see in the churches.
  • 12:15 - 12:18
    But, there is a reason
    God gave us the Word.
  • 12:18 - 12:22
    Because it's not our religion
    that is the truth.
  • 12:22 - 12:24
    It's the Word of God.
  • 12:24 - 12:29
    So, I encourage you,
    keep it simple.
  • 12:29 - 12:32
You have religion in one hand,
  • 12:32 - 12:34
and you have the Book of Acts
    in the other hand.
  • 12:34 - 12:36
    What is correct?
  • 12:36 - 12:39
Don't build on your own experience.
  • 12:39 - 12:41
    Experience can change over night.
  • 12:41 - 12:43
    We need to obey this.
  • 12:43 - 12:46
Until now we have been talking about
  • 12:46 - 12:48
    how the harvest is great
  • 12:49 - 12:50
and how the workers are few
  • 12:50 - 12:53
and how we need to be sent out
  • 12:53 - 12:57
    as sheep among wolves.
  • 12:57 - 12:59
    And there's persecution out there.
  • 12:59 - 13:01
What do we see in the Book of Acts?
  • 13:01 - 13:03
We see that the harvest is great.
  • 13:03 - 13:06
We also see that there is a few workers.
  • 13:06 - 13:11
We even see how God used persecution
one time to get the sheep out among wolves.
  • 13:12 - 13:14
And we see that when they are out there,
    among the wolves,
  • 13:14 - 13:17
    they experience persecution.
  • 13:17 - 13:21
They paid a price, and it was not easy.
  • 13:21 - 13:24
    Paul experience stoning and
    many other things.
  • 13:24 - 13:25
    He was thrown into jail.
  • 13:25 - 13:28
    But he could also testify
    that Christ was with him.
  • 13:28 - 13:32
    When he went out there
    Christ was with him.
  • 13:32 - 13:34
    What do we see?
What have we been looking at?
  • 13:34 - 13:37
We have been looking at how
you find the person of peace,
  • 13:37 - 13:40
and how, when you find that
    person, as Jesus said,
  • 13:40 - 13:43
you go to their house and you sit,
and eat and drink what they serve.
  • 13:43 - 13:46
And then you there heal the sick
    and preach the gospel.
  • 13:46 - 13:48
    And stay there.
  • 13:48 - 13:52
And this is what we see
    in the Book of Acts.
  • 13:52 - 13:59
The Book of Acts is a confirmation
of the call Jesus gave us in Luke 10.
  • 13:59 - 14:04
You don't see fine, nice churches
and programs in the Book of Acts,
  • 14:04 - 14:05
    like we do often today.
  • 14:05 - 14:09
You see raw and real life,
  • 14:09 - 14:14
    the spirit of Christ
    working in His body.
  • 14:15 - 14:19
And this is what we need to do.
This is what we need to obey.
  • 14:19 - 14:25
Next time we are going to continue
    and look at the gospel,
  • 14:25 - 14:29
but I want to start here
    with the Book of Acts,
  • 14:29 - 14:35
because the Book of Acts is where
we really see how they were preaching.
  • 14:35 - 14:39
The Book of Acts is where we really see
how they responded to the preaching.
  • 14:39 - 14:46
The Book of Acts is where we really see
    the biblical life,
  • 14:46 - 14:50
like how they got born again
    and all of that.
  • 14:50 - 14:54
So, next time, I'm going to use
    more time
  • 14:54 - 14:58
where we are going to look at the gospel
    of the Kingdom,
  • 14:58 - 15:02
where I will give you the big picture,
from the beginning to the end,
  • 15:03 - 15:07
and what people need to do
    to be born again.
  • 15:07 - 15:10
And what you are going to see,
when we show the big picture,
  • 15:10 - 15:13
is what people need to be born again
  • 15:13 - 15:16
    maybe goes against
    what you have been told,
  • 15:16 - 15:18
    maybe goes against
    your church tradition.
  • 15:18 - 15:21
    Sadly, I think it does,
  • 15:21 - 15:24
because we have come so far away
    from the Bible,
  • 15:24 - 15:27
but it will not go against
what we read in the Book of Acts.
  • 15:27 - 15:31
That's why I took the time
    in this video
  • 15:31 - 15:36
to really focus on the Book of Acts
and what that life was all about.
  • 15:36 - 15:40
And start, until the next time,
just read through the Book of Acts,
  • 15:40 - 15:44
and then see if that fits
    with your life today.
  • 15:44 - 15:46
    It should be like that.
  • 15:46 - 15:48
    God bless you,
    and see you next time
  • 15:48 - 15:51
where we are going to continue
    looking at the gospel.
  • 15:52 - 15:52
    Bye-bye!
  • 15:55 - 15:57
