Ukulele Lesson 3 - Uke Open Chords: A Amin A7 D Dmin D7 E Emin E7 (UK-003)
-
0:05 - 0:09Hey, how you're doing. Justin here
for another Ukulele Lesson. -
0:09 - 0:12Today we will be checkin out the
rest of your open chord grips -
0:12 - 0:14So another nine chords today
we'll be looking at. -
0:14 - 0:18These ones are slightly harder than the
open chords that we looked at last time -
0:18 - 0:21But not much. Well some of them are.
Some of them are a bit easier -
0:21 - 0:23But a couple of them
are a little bit trickier -
0:23 - 0:25Make sure you got these other
chords well under your fingers first -
0:25 - 0:28Before you start to look at these ones.
-
0:28 - 0:30And let's go to a close-up,
show how to play them. -
0:30 - 0:34The first chord were going to look at
today is an A-chord and its variations. -
0:34 - 0:36So starting with "A" we start with the
-
0:36 - 0:402nd finger in the 2nd fret of string 4
-
0:40 - 0:44then we put 1st finger, 1st fret of string 3,
-
0:44 - 0:46the other two strings are open so
-
0:46 - 0:472nd fret,
-
0:47 - 0:481st fret
-
0:48 - 0:50open, open
-
0:50 - 0:53(Plays A-chord)
-
0:53 - 0:55Very, very easy chord this one.
-
0:55 - 1:00Next one is one that we looked at
in the intro to Uke-Playing lesson. -
1:00 - 1:03We just lift off the the first finger and
we got our A-minor chord. -
1:03 - 1:07O.K. that's 2nd fret, open, open, open
-
1:07 - 1:10(Plays A-minor-chord)
-
1:10 - 1:14Doesn't matter what finger again
-
1:14 - 1:17Start with the second finger but it
really could be any finger -
1:17 - 1:19It doesn't really make much difference.
-
1:19 - 1:22And the last one of the "A"s ist the A7th
-
1:22 - 1:27Now we just got the 1st finger
in the 1st fret of the 3rd string -
1:27 - 1:30Open,1st fret, open, open
-
1:30 - 1:33You may certainly all be using
your first finger for this but -
1:33 - 1:36you could try other fingers if you
thought it was gonna be easier -
1:36 - 1:39(Plays A7th-chord)
-
1:39 - 1:42Okay, so that's an A-chord.
Very, very funky little chord -
1:42 - 1:44Okay, let's move on to E-chord.
-
1:44 - 1:46Now, E is a little bit difficult.
-
1:48 - 1:50Not difficult, not terribly difficult.
-
1:50 - 1:52But a little bit tricky.
-
1:52 - 1:55So we got 1st finger, 1st fret
of the 4th string -
1:56 - 2:00then little finger is going in the
4th fret of the 3rd string -
2:00 - 2:04and 2nd finger is going in the
2nd fret of the 1st string -
2:04 - 2:06and the 2nd string is open.
-
2:06 - 2:11So, 1st fret, 4th fret, open, 2nd fret.
-
2:11 - 2:13(Plays E-chord)
-
2:13 - 2:16Feels a little bit awkward this
shaping for guitar players -
2:16 - 2:18This is not a kind of a
common guitar-shape. -
2:18 - 2:20If you're new to it, you might find it a little difficulty
-
2:20 - 2:24getting the little finger to jump
over to that chord. -
2:24 - 2:26So that the little finger to the 4th fret there.
-
2:27 - 2:29Not particularly difficult in
the grand scheme of things. -
2:29 - 2:33It's a bit more awkward than some of
those that we've looked at so far -
2:33 - 2:36But it's a very important chord - E-chord
-
2:36 - 2:38O.K. Lets look at E-minor now.
-
2:39 - 2:41Quite alot easier actually
-
2:41 - 2:43So we've got nothing on the 4th string
-
2:43 - 2:463rd finger on the 4th fret
of the 3rd string -
2:46 - 2:492nd finger, 3rd fret of the 2nd string
-
2:49 - 2:53and 1st finger in the 2nd fret
of the 1st string -
2:55 - 2:57That is our E-minor chord.
-
2:57 - 3:00You could use other fingers
but this is probably the one -
3:00 - 3:02that you will start off most of the time.
-
3:02 - 3:04and that's E-minor.
-
3:04 - 3:08O.K. Now we look at E7th
-
3:08 - 3:12This is 1st finger 1st fret
of the 4th string -
3:12 - 3:162nd finger 2nd fret of the 3rd string
-
3:16 - 3:18open second string
-
3:18 - 3:22and 3rd finger going down
in the 2nd fret of the 1st string -
3:22 - 3:25(Plays E7th-chord)
-
3:25 - 3:27This is a really common Uke-grip
-
3:27 - 3:29So this is a good one to learn.
-
3:29 - 3:32Now, guitar-players might find it easier to
-
3:32 - 3:35play it like it was kind of the
top part of a B7th-chord -
3:35 - 3:39using the 1st finger and then
the 3rd finger and the little finger -
3:41 - 3:44Most commonly I think it's playing using fingers 1, 2 and 3
-
3:44 - 3:47Most of these grips, you know, you
can change the fingering round. -
3:47 - 3:49It's all relatively simple.
-
3:49 - 3:51So that would be our "E"-chords.
-
3:51 - 3:54Now last thing we're looking at "D"-chords
-
3:54 - 3:57Now D-major chord means that we have to get
-
3:57 - 4:01Three fingers all wedged into the 2nd fret
-
4:01 - 4:02It's a little bit awkward
-
4:02 - 4:062nd finger 2nd fret of the 4th string,
-
4:06 - 4:083rd finger 2nd fret of the 3rd string,
-
4:08 - 4:11little finger 2nd fret of the 2nd string.
-
4:13 - 4:162nd fret, 2nd fret, 2nd fret, open.
-
4:16 - 4:19(Plays D-chord)
-
4:19 - 4:21Again it's a really common chord.
-
4:21 - 4:23It's just a little bit tricky.
-
4:23 - 4:25It's getting your fingers to cram in there
-
4:25 - 4:27You could use fingers 1, 2 and 3.
-
4:27 - 4:30But I really struggle with that to
try and get my fingers in there. -
4:30 - 4:34You could use the kind of an "A"-grip
that I teach in the beginner's course. -
4:34 - 4:37That's using the 2nd finger on
the 2nd fret of string 4, -
4:37 - 4:411st finger underneath on the
2nd fret of the 3rd string -
4:41 - 4:46and then 3rd finger on the
2nd fret of the 2nd string. -
4:47 - 4:50It feels quite difficult because
those fingers are a lot bigger. -
4:50 - 4:54I'd highly recommend in that
instant using fingers 2, 3, 4. -
4:54 - 4:57But again you might try some other stuff.
-
4:57 - 5:00I see some guys doing this as a little bar
-
5:00 - 5:05You can get away with that some times
using 2nd, 2nd, 2nd fret, open -
5:05 - 5:08but you have to find your
right length of bar there. -
5:08 - 5:09Which can be a little bit tricky.
-
5:09 - 5:13I tend to play it like this myself, it's
up to you to find what works for you -
5:13 - 5:17Now the minor chord D-minor.
-
5:17 - 5:20To guitar players it looks
a little bit like A-minor. -
5:20 - 5:23we've got 2nd fret, 2nd fret,
1st fret, open -
5:23 - 5:262nd finger in the 2nd fret of the 4th string
-
5:26 - 5:293rd finger 2nd fret of the 3rd string
-
5:29 - 5:31and 1st finger 1st fret of the 2nd string.
-
5:31 - 5:34(Plays D-minor)
-
5:34 - 5:35That's D-minor.
-
5:37 - 5:41And lastly we got D7th, nice and
easy one to finish off with. -
5:41 - 5:452nd finger, 2nd fret of the 4th string
-
5:45 - 5:46open 3rd string
-
5:46 - 5:493rd finger, 2nd fret, 2nd string
-
5:49 - 5:50and then open first string.
-
5:50 - 5:53(Plays D7th-chord)
-
5:53 - 5:56Again you could be changing the fingering
around it wouldn't really matter -
5:56 - 6:01Fingers 2 and 3 are those that I tend to
use most often with this particular grip -
6:03 - 6:07So now you should know all of the
common open chord grips. -
6:07 - 6:10For the major, minor and
dominant seventh chords -
6:11 - 6:14I'm shure some of you are probably
wondering what happened to B. -
6:14 - 6:20Cause we'd looked at C-major, D-major,
E-major, F-major, G-major, A-major but not B -
6:20 - 6:22Well B is kind of like a little bar-chord,
-
6:22 - 6:25it's a little trickier and it's a
moveable chord shape. -
6:25 - 6:28So that's something that we're going to be
looking at in a future lesson -
6:28 - 6:30But we're not going to be
looking at it just yet. -
6:31 - 6:33Big important things to do here:
-
6:33 - 6:36One, check out the chords relationships
and make shure that your -
6:36 - 6:39playing like, you know, D and Dmin and D7
and see how they are similar. -
6:40 - 6:41That will really help you remember them
-
6:41 - 6:45And also really important is that you .
put them to use by learning some songs -
6:45 - 6:48Can't stress this enough, it's really
-
6:48 - 6:50the best way to go about learning
your new chords is to -
6:50 - 6:51put them into a song rightaway.
-
6:51 - 6:54So find some songs that are using
the chords that you already know -
6:54 - 6:56and just one or two of the new ones.
-
6:56 - 6:58See if you can blend them together a
little bit and get them under your fingers -
6:58 - 7:01Cause that's the way to go about
learning your chords -
7:01 - 7:04Not to just try and learn hundreds of
chords that you are never going to use. -
7:04 - 7:07That's a real waste of time, you know,
that's to be avoided. -
7:07 - 7:11Learn the chords that you need to play
the songs that you want to play. -
7:12 - 7:13That's what you want to be after
-
7:13 - 7:15Hope you have fun with all of
those new chords -
7:15 - 7:18and I'll see you for plenty more guitar-
and uke-lessons very soon. -
7:18 - 7:19Take care of yourselves!
Bye, Bye!
