Run Free | Sonja Sohn |TEDxMidAtlantic

  • 0:03 - 0:06
The name of this poem is "Run Free."
  • 0:11 - 0:13
My back is against the brick wall
  • 0:13 - 0:16
and I got a Mack truck
    two inches from my face!
  • 0:16 - 0:19
    Every cell in my body
    is screaming: "Run!"
  • 0:19 - 0:22
    But I can't.
  • 0:22 - 0:23
    My mind drifts.
  • 0:23 - 0:26
I think about the last time I ran.
  • 0:26 - 0:29
Left my baby with two cokeheads on acid.
  • 0:29 - 0:31
What does it matter that one was my sister
  • 0:31 - 0:32
and the other my best friend?
  • 0:32 - 0:34
It meant everything to me then!
  • 0:34 - 0:37
    Anything not to get busted!
  • 0:39 - 0:41
    My brain was busted!
  • 0:41 - 0:44
    Frying on the hot concrete
    of my life run-a-muck!
  • 0:44 - 0:47
    Dripping down the dead body
    of my soul,
  • 0:47 - 0:49
    collecting into pools of blood
    at my feet!
  • 0:50 - 0:53
    I'm kicking and stomping
    and running and jumping,
  • 0:53 - 0:54
    wreaking all kinds of havoc
  • 0:54 - 0:56
    creating a bloody mess,
  • 0:56 - 0:58
    and I am going nowhere!
  • 0:59 - 1:01
    Somewhere in my mind,
    I am moving.
  • 1:01 - 1:03
    Somewhere in reality,
    I am running!
  • 1:03 - 1:07
    Somewhere inside myself
    I am: "Oh, so still!"
  • 1:09 - 1:11
    Quiet. Dead.
  • 1:11 - 1:15
    My soul is not rising,
    my spirit is not lifting,
  • 1:15 - 1:18
    my life is not living,
    but... I am running!
  • 1:18 - 1:19
    Moving through the universe,
  • 1:19 - 1:22
a whirling dervish with no end,
  • 1:22 - 1:24
    no purpose, no means,
    no life left to live.
  • 1:24 - 1:26
But still, I want to go to that place
    where I can run,
  • 1:26 - 1:28
"Run free!" my mind tells me.
  • 1:28 - 1:32
    But those two words
cannot occupy the same space in reality:
  • 1:32 - 1:34
    "Run!". "Free!"
  • 1:34 - 1:35
My back is against the brick wall
  • 1:35 - 1:37
    I got a Mack truck
    two inches from my face!
  • 1:38 - 1:39
    Oh, run free baby!
    Right now!
  • 1:39 - 1:42
    It would be so easy!
  • 1:42 - 1:43
    Just turn around and go!
  • 1:43 - 1:46
    Clip all the wires,
    hang-ups and hook-ups
  • 1:46 - 1:47
    and then you're home, free!
  • 1:47 - 1:49
You can give birth to an excuse
    so easily,
  • 1:49 - 1:50
you'll believe it's always been there!
  • 1:50 - 1:52
    Part of the natural order,
  • 1:52 - 1:54
    made to order
    by your forever clever mind!
  • 1:54 - 1:56
Constantly making you believe in things
  • 1:56 - 1:58
you no longer need to believe in!
  • 1:59 - 2:01
    I believe!
  • 2:02 - 2:05
    I believe like a Holly-Roller
  • 2:05 - 2:06
    singing, sweating,
  • 2:06 - 2:08
    preaching
"Go Tell it on the Mountain",
  • 2:08 - 2:10
    while diving in 10,000 feet
    of baptismal water
  • 2:10 - 2:11
    without a life preserver.
  • 2:11 - 2:13
    I believe,
  • 2:13 - 2:16
    like my bullet-ridden brother
    out there somewhere right now!
  • 2:16 - 2:18
Gurgling blood through his last breath,
  • 2:18 - 2:20
spitting out a read ripe prayer
  • 2:20 - 2:23
    so new, so sweet, so baby fresh;
  • 2:25 - 2:27
he thinks it can save his life.
  • 2:28 - 2:31
    Brutal honesty won't knock down
    the doors of Heaven
  • 2:31 - 2:34
but it will damn sure crash
    the gates of Hell!
  • 2:34 - 2:36
So I believe any and everything
    that sprouts
  • 2:36 - 2:38
    from my colossally imperfect mind
  • 2:38 - 2:40
    because in this moment,
  • 2:40 - 2:42
    I got a Mack truck
    two inches from my face,
  • 2:42 - 2:44
and a brick wall kissing my ass!
  • 2:44 - 2:46
God does not exist in desperation!
  • 2:46 - 2:47
    And hope is lying dead
  • 2:47 - 2:49
    somewhere in a sewer
down the street, around the corner,
  • 2:49 - 2:51
    in the alley
    underneath the feet of somebody
  • 2:51 - 2:53
    itching, scratching, trembling,
  • 2:53 - 2:56
    jonesin' for their next hit
    and suckin' sombody's dick!
  • 2:56 - 2:57
    I got two minutes , ya'll!
  • 2:57 - 2:58
    I got two minutes
  • 2:58 - 3:01
    before I smash my face
into the grill of a Mack truck!
  • 3:01 - 3:04
    Before I get 10,000 bricks
    shoved up my ass,
  • 3:04 - 3:07
before I run free or die!
  • 3:07 - 3:08
    Thank you.
  • 3:08 - 3:09
    (Applause)
