Ukulele Lesson 4 - Uke Shuffle Strumming (UK-004)
-
0:05 - 0:06Hey, how're you doing?
-
0:06 - 0:09Justin here with another
ukulele instalment for you. -
0:09 - 0:12And today we're going to be
looking at shuffle strumming. -
0:12 - 0:14Now this type of strumming
is really, really -
0:14 - 0:16common on the ukulele,
so it's definitely -
0:16 - 0:18something you need
to do some practice with, -
0:18 - 0:22and we're going to be doing a play along
so you can get use to the feel of it. -
0:22 - 0:24So, what is a shuffle?
-
0:24 - 0:26Normally in music when you have a:
-
0:26 - 0:291 and 2 and 3 and 4 and
-
0:29 - 0:32It would be played very evenly, okay?
-
0:32 - 0:34Like mathematically as
perfectly as you could. -
0:34 - 0:35Doing something like:
-
0:35 - 0:391 and 2 and 3 and 4 and
-
0:39 - 0:421 and 2 and 3 and 4 and
-
0:42 - 0:45(continues strum pattern)
-
0:45 - 0:47Normally, it would be a
down strum on the beat. -
0:47 - 0:49On the 1, 2, 3, and the 4
-
0:49 - 0:51and an up strum on the "ands".
-
0:51 - 0:55So, 1 and 2 and 3 and 4 and
-
0:55 - 0:56Okay?
-
0:56 - 0:59That should be something that
you're working on already, -
0:59 - 1:02but the shuffle is particularly
common on the ukulele. -
1:02 - 1:04We use it on guitar as well,
-
1:04 - 1:07particularly blues used
a lot of shuffle stuff, -
1:07 - 1:10but on the ukulele there is
something about that kind of- -
1:10 - 1:12It's got a bit of a groove to it.
-
1:12 - 1:13Sounds great on uke.
-
1:13 - 1:17So what we are basically doing is
delaying the up stroke a little bit. -
1:17 - 1:18The "and"
-
1:18 - 1:19So instead of going:
-
1:19 - 1:221 and 2 and 3 and 4 and
-
1:22 - 1:23We go:
-
1:23 - 1:261- and 2- and 3- and 4
-
1:26 - 1:29and 1- and 2- and 3- and 4
-
1:33 - 1:35That kind of feeling,
if it's straight. -
1:35 - 1:38(demonstrates)
-
1:38 - 1:39Now with the shuffle again.
-
1:39 - 1:42(demonstrates with shuffle)
-
1:43 - 1:46Now, if we want to look at it
mathematically, -
1:46 - 1:49we would divide each beat into 3,
-
1:49 - 1:51commonly called "triplets" in music,
-
1:51 - 1:53and we would be playing the first
one and the last one. -
1:54 - 1:56If we were counting this
we'd normally count -
1:56 - 2:001 trip-let 2 trip-let
3 trip-let 4 trip-let -
2:00 - 2:01That would be the count for it.
-
2:01 - 2:03So it would be strumming
the down on the beat, -
2:03 - 2:05and the up stroke on the "let".
-
2:05 - 2:08So if I do it really slowly
we would be doing: -
2:08 - 2:131 trip-let 2 trip-let
3 trip-let 4 trip-let -
2:13 - 2:181 trip-let 2 trip-let
3 trip-let 4 trip-let -
2:18 - 2:21It's not quite as
mathematical as that really -
2:21 - 2:23when it comes to making music out of it.
-
2:23 - 2:28It's just got this kind of- It's a
little bit more dance-y than -
2:28 - 2:32(playing with shuffle)
-
2:33 - 2:36♪♪
-
2:37 - 2:39Than it would if I played
that same thing straight -
2:39 - 2:44(plays straight)
-
2:45 - 2:48It doesn't seem to have
the same groove as: -
2:48 - 2:51(with shuffle)
-
2:53 - 2:56♪♪
-
2:57 - 3:00So, to practice, what I would
recommend you start off with -
3:00 - 3:01is doing the little count thing.
-
3:01 - 3:04So, first thing is to practice
actually saying out loud: -
3:04 - 3:091 trip-let 2 trip-let
3 trip-let 4 trip-let -
3:09 - 3:10over and over again.
-
3:10 - 3:13Then start playing along with
the down strum on that beat, -
3:13 - 3:15on the count: the 1, 2, 3, and the 4
-
3:15 - 3:17and the up on the "let". So going:
-
3:17 - 3:221 trip-let 2 trip-let
3 trip-let 4 trip-let -
3:22 - 3:261 trip-let 2 trip-let
3 trip-let 4- -
3:27 - 3:30Let's have a little play
along of doing that now -
3:30 - 3:33cause this is how you want to get
it under your fingers properly. -
3:33 - 3:36Or finger, as you're probably
strumming with your first finger, -
3:36 - 3:38that's what I'd be recommending.
-
3:38 - 3:40I'm using a C-chord here
as it's nice and easy, -
3:40 - 3:42and you don't want to think about chords.
-
3:42 - 3:44You just want to think
about the strumming. -
3:44 - 3:47So if i'm going:
3 trip-let 4 trip-let -
3:48 - 3:531 trip-let 2 trip-let
3 trip-let 4 trip-let -
3:53 - 3:591 trip-let 2 trip-let
3 trip-let 4 trip-let -
3:59 - 3:59Keep going.
-
3:59 - 4:041 trip-let 2 trip-let
3 trip-let 4 trip-let -
4:04 - 4:09down...up, down...up,
down...up, down...up -
4:09 - 4:141 trip-let 2 trip-let
3 trip-let 4 trip-let -
4:15 - 4:191 trip-let 2 trip-let
3 trip-let 4 trip-let -
4:20 - 4:24Okay? So, really that's the way to get
used to the idea of having that kind of -
4:24 - 4:26delayed end, if you like, the shuffle.
-
4:26 - 4:29But really what's important is that it
feels good. -
4:29 - 4:32So once you've actually got it right
the point would be to just play it. -
4:34 - 4:37See if you can get that skip-y
feeling where it's kind of- -
4:38 - 4:40And I don't mean Skippy
the Bush Kangaroo. -
4:40 - 4:43I mean, like, you know.
Kinda moving nice. -
4:46 - 4:48That's really where it's at
with this kind of rhythm thing. -
4:48 - 4:52It's not so much about the
mathematically perfect version. -
4:52 - 4:54It's kind of getting it to feel nice,
-
4:54 - 4:56and that's something
that you can practice. -
4:56 - 4:59When you're playing it yourself,
practice trying to make it feel good. -
5:00 - 5:03You'll feel there'll be a certain
little pocket where it'll be like- -
5:03 - 5:05It'll make you move,
it'll make you feel different -
5:05 - 5:07and that's really where it's at.
-
5:07 - 5:13And this shuffle thing, for playing uke
songs is a really important part of it -
5:13 - 5:15because playing it straight on
the uke just never seems to- -
5:16 - 5:20Well sometimes it works better, but
most times you want to try and get -
5:20 - 5:23that shuffle rhythm in there
cause it just sounds cool. -
5:23 - 5:25Basically, it all boils down
to what sounds good -
5:25 - 5:29and learning the shuffle, and getting that
groovy feeling when you're playing -
5:29 - 5:31your rhythm guitar is
totally where it's at. -
5:31 - 5:33So, have a little bit of fun with that
-
5:33 - 5:36and I will see you for plenty
more lessons very soon. -
5:36 - 5:37Take care of yourselves.
-
5:37 - 5:38Bye-bye.
