Converting decimals to fractions 1 (ex 2)

  • 0:00 - 0:06
    Let's write 0.8 as a fraction.
  • 0:06 - 0:10
So 0.8, the 8 right over here is in the tenths place.
  • 0:10 - 0:11
It is in the tenths place.
  • 0:11 - 0:14
So you can read this as 8 tenths (or 8/10).
  • 0:14 - 0:16
And we can write that, literally,
  • 0:16 - 0:21
as being equal to 8 tenths, or 8 over 10 (or 8/10).
  • 0:21 - 0:23
And now, we've already written it as a fraction.
  • 0:23 - 0:25
And if we want, we can simplify this down.
  • 0:25 - 0:28
Both 8 and 10 share common factors.
  • 0:28 - 0:30
They are both divisible by 2.
  • 0:30 - 0:31
So let's divide both the numerator
  • 0:31 - 0:34
    and the denominator by 2.
  • 0:34 - 0:35
We're not changing the value of the fraction,
  • 0:35 - 0:37
because we are dividing both the numerator
  • 0:37 - 0:39
and the denominator by the same thing.
  • 0:39 - 0:41
    8 ÷ 2 is 4.
  • 0:41 - 0:44
    10 ÷ 2 is 5.
  • 0:44 - 0:46
    And we're done.
  • 0:46 - 0:52
0.8 is the same thing as 8 tenths (or 8/10), which is the same thing as 4 fifths (or 4/5).
