The Life and Career of David Bowie

  • 0:07 - 0:09
    Welcome to Watchmojo.com,
  • 0:09 - 0:13
and today we are taking a look at
the life and career of David Bowie.
  • 0:20 - 0:26
David Robert Jones was born on January 8th,
    1947 in Brixton, London, England.
  • 0:26 - 0:29
    Though he showed musical
    interest at a young age,
  • 0:29 - 0:32
it was only in the early 60s
that he really pursued the art.
  • 0:32 - 0:35
He started by joining several blues bands,
  • 0:35 - 0:38
but branched off on his own
    when they had little success.
  • 0:38 - 0:44
    Renaming himself David Bowie,
he released his self-titled debut in 1967.
  • 0:49 - 0:54
Its lack of success led Bowie to participate
    in a promotional film called
  • 0:54 - 0:55
    "Love You till Tuesday,"
  • 0:55 - 0:57
which showcased several of his songs.
  • 0:57 - 0:59
Of particular interest was "Space Oddity."
  • 0:59 - 1:05
That track became a hit after it was released
at the same time as the first moon landing.
  • 1:09 - 1:13
His sophomore effort of the same name,
    however, was another commercial disappointment.
  • 1:14 - 1:17
    To promote his third album,
The Man Who Sold the World,
  • 1:17 - 1:22
Bowie was put in a dress to capitalize
    on his androgynous look.
  • 1:22 - 1:26
    In 1971, a pop-influenced record called
    Hunky Dory came out
  • 1:26 - 1:31
and was followed by the creation of his
    flamboyant Ziggy Stardust persona
  • 1:31 - 1:34
and stage show with backing band,
    The Spiders from Mars.
  • 1:34 - 1:36
    Then came his breakthrough record,
  • 1:36 - 1:39
The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust
    and the Spiders from Mars,
  • 1:39 - 1:45
which climbed the charts thanks to his performance
of the single, "Starman" on "Top of the Pops."
  • 1:52 - 1:56
    1973's Aladdin Sane was
    his first number one album,
  • 1:56 - 2:00
mixing a hard rock sound with styles
    such as avant-garde jazz.
  • 2:00 - 2:03
The Spiders from Mars were disbanded
    shortly thereafter.
  • 2:03 - 2:07
After the covers album, Pin Ups, turned Bowie
    into the UK's best-selling artist,
  • 2:07 - 2:13
the funky concept record, Diamond Dogs,
featuring the hit, "Rebel Rebel," was released.
  • 2:17 - 2:20
The elaborate stage shows for the tour that followed,
  • 2:20 - 2:24
as well as the worsening state of Bowie's health
    due to his cocaine addiction,
  • 2:24 - 2:27
would later be seen in the documentary,
    "Cracked Actor."
  • 2:27 - 2:31
1975 saw the release of Young Americans,
  • 2:31 - 2:34
an album that was less glam rock and more soul.
  • 2:34 - 2:36
This album spawned his first U.S. hit,
  • 2:36 - 2:39
a track that was written with John Lennon, "Fame."
  • 2:39 - 2:43
His next album, Station to Station,
    featured the song, "Golden Years,"
  • 2:43 - 2:47
    and introduced another alter ego,
    the Thin White Duke.
  • 2:47 - 2:51
    This persona resembled his character
    in the 1976 movie,
  • 2:51 - 2:53
"The Man Who Fell to Earth."
  • 2:53 - 2:58
Up next was a trio of albums recorded
with Brian Eno known as the Berlin Trilogy,
  • 2:58 - 3:01
    beginning with 1977's Low.
  • 3:01 - 3:06
This ambient and abstract album produced
the UK hit, "Sound and Vision."
  • 3:06 - 3:10
This was followed by a more pop rock
but still minimalist album called Heroes,
  • 3:10 - 3:14
    whose title track later became
    a Bowie signature tune.
  • 3:16 - 3:21
And in 1979, with his drug addiction
now behind him, Bowie released Lodger,
  • 3:21 - 3:25
    which contained new wave
    and world music elements.
  • 3:25 - 3:30
1980's Scary Monsters (and Super Creeps)
featured the hit, "Ashes to Ashes,"
  • 3:30 - 3:33
    which was accompanied
    by an iconic music video.
  • 3:34 - 3:40
Bowie's career leapt to new heights in 1983
with the success of the album, Let's Dance,
  • 3:40 - 3:43
and the music videos for the singles,
    "Modern Love"
  • 3:45 - 3:47
    and "China Girl."
  • 3:49 - 3:52
    High sales continued with
    the dance-inspired Tonight,
  • 3:52 - 3:55
an album that featured the Top 10 hit,
    "Blue Jean."
  • 3:55 - 4:00
In 1985, the music video for Bowie's duet
with Mick Jagger, "Dancing in the Street,"
  • 4:00 - 4:02
    was debuted at Live Aid.
  • 4:02 - 4:06
Two years later, Bowie released the more
techno-based album, Never Let Me Down,
  • 4:06 - 4:09
that featured the single, "Day-In, Day-Out."
  • 4:10 - 4:13
Bowie took on a number of
    acting roles during the '80s.
  • 4:13 - 4:16
    Examples include a Broadway production
    of "The Elephant Man,"
  • 4:16 - 4:19
    and the films, "Absolute Beginners,"
    "Labyrinth,"
  • 4:19 - 4:21
and "The Last Temptation of Christ."
  • 4:21 - 4:25
At the end of the 80s, Bowie fronted
    a band called Tin Machine,
  • 4:25 - 4:27
    which recorded two studio albums.
  • 4:27 - 4:29
    But, they dissolved in 1992.
  • 4:32 - 4:35
Bowie then returned to his solo career
    with the jazzier album,
  • 4:35 - 4:38
Black Tie White Noise, in 1993.
  • 4:38 - 4:42
This was closely followed by the soundtrack
    for a television series called
  • 4:42 - 4:43
    The Buddha of Suburbia.
  • 4:43 - 4:49
In 1995, Bowie brought industrial elements
to the mix with the album Outside.
  • 4:57 - 5:00
    He gained more critical
    and commercial success
  • 5:00 - 5:04
    with the techno-infused sounds
    of 1997's Earthling.
  • 5:10 - 5:15
1999 saw the release of an album
with more rock tracks entitled "Hours..."
  • 5:16 - 5:21
This was followed by the critically
and commercially acclaimed Heathen in 2002
  • 5:21 - 5:26
    and another successful record
    in 2003 called Reality.
  • 5:33 - 5:37
    Emergency heart surgery
in 2004 forced Bowie to slow down,
  • 5:37 - 5:39
so in the latter half of the decade,
  • 5:39 - 5:43
he recorded only a few songs
and played a couple of gigs.
  • 5:43 - 5:46
    Bowie continued to act
    while he released albums.
  • 5:46 - 5:49
    Some of his most notable
    film appearances include
  • 5:49 - 5:50
"Twin Peaks: Fire Walk with Me,"
  • 5:50 - 5:55
    "Mr. Rice’s Secret," "Zoolander,"
    and "The Prestige."
  • 5:57 - 5:59
A true chameleon of the music world,
  • 5:59 - 6:02
    David Bowie has incorporated many
different styles to make his own.
  • 6:02 - 6:05
    With his distinctive voice
    and extravagant stage shows,
  • 6:05 - 6:10
he is surely an artist who will continue
to be influential throughout the ages.
