Obama Gives Special Message to Sudan, S. Sudan
-
0:00 - 0:04In recent weeks, rising violence and fighting have taken the lives of innocent
-
0:04 - 0:08civillians- men, women and children.
-
0:08 - 0:12Heated rhetoric on both sides has raised the risk of war.
-
0:12 - 0:17So today I want to speak directly to you- the people of Sudan and
-
0:17 - 0:21South Sudan. In your lives you've endured extraordinary hardships.
-
0:21 - 0:25You carry in your hearts the memory of family and friends you've lost;
-
0:25 - 0:29but in recent years against great odds, you've made remarkable
-
0:29 - 0:32progress toward breaking the violent cycles of the past
-
0:32 - 0:36toward building a future of peace and greater prosperity.
-
0:36 - 0:40Now all that progress is at risk of unraveling.
-
0:40 - 0:45So my message to you today is simple: It doesn't have
-
0:45 - 0:49to be this way. Conflict is not inevitable.
-
0:49 - 0:52You still have a choice. You still have a chance to avoid being dragged
-
0:52 - 0:57back into war which only leads to one place- more suffering,
-
0:57 - 1:00more refugees, more death, more
-
1:00 - 1:04lost dreams for you and your children. We know what
-
1:04 - 1:09needs to happen. The Government of Sudan must stop its military actions,
-
1:09 - 1:12including aerial bombardments. It must give aid workers the access
-
1:12 - 1:17they need to save lives. And it must end its support for armed groups
-
1:17 - 1:21inside the south. Likewise, the Government of South Sudan
-
1:21 - 1:25must end its support for armed groups inside Sudan and it must cease
-
1:25 - 1:28its military actions across the border. The presidents of
-
1:28 - 1:32Sudan and South Sudan must have the courage to return to the table and negotiate
-
1:32 - 1:37and resolve these issues peacefully. And all of those who are
-
1:37 - 1:40fighting, including in Southern Kordofan and Blue Nile, must
-
1:40 - 1:45recognise there is no military solution. The only way to achieve
-
1:45 - 1:49real and lasting security is to resolve your differences through negotiation.
-
1:49 - 1:54In times of tension, it's easy to forget that your future is shared.
-
1:54 - 1:58You will never be at peace if your neighbour feels threatened.
-
1:58 - 2:01You will never see development and progress, if your neighbour
-
2:01 - 2:04refuses to be your partner in trade and commerce.
-
2:04 - 2:07It's easier to start wars than to end them.
-
2:07 - 2:11And yes, peace is hard, but the forces of history
-
2:11 - 2:16which sometimes seems so large are not beyond our control. Your future belongs
-
2:16 - 2:20to you. It is in your hands. You have the power,
-
2:20 - 2:24the choice to say what comes next-
-
2:24 - 2:28whether your children will live in war or peace. The choice is yours,
-
2:28 - 2:32and now is the time to choose peace. As I've said before,
-
2:32 - 2:36those who have the courage to walk the path of peace will not be alone.
-
2:36 -They will have a strong and steady partner in the United States of America.
