Community Power Roadmap to Success Workshop Video

  • 0:06 - 0:12
What do sub-prime mortgages have to do with Atlantic Salmon, SUVs and globalization?
  • 0:12 - 0:15
They all depend on cheap oil, but oil is peaking.
  • 0:15 - 0:19
So you can count on the price at the pump going up.
  • 0:19 - 0:23
And as transportation costs rise, so will the cost of our food.
  • 0:23 - 0:27
That means that we have to wean ourselves from fossil fuels and re-engineer our lives
  • 0:27 - 0:31
to adapt to a world of growing energy scarcity.
  • 0:31 - 0:35
The good news is your neighbors and your neighborhood are about to get a lot more important
  • 0:35 - 0:37
in the not too distant future.
  • 0:37 - 0:40
Margaret Mead, a famous anthropologist, once said,
  • 0:40 - 0:45
"Never underestimate how a small group of thoughtful people can change the world.
  • 0:45 - 0:48
Indeed, it's the only thing that ever has!"
  • 0:48 - 0:50
That's where community power comes in.
  • 0:50 - 0:54
Thinking and acting locally is the only way that we are going to able to
  • 0:54 - 0:59
address the issues facing us today and generations to come.
  • 0:59 - 1:01
We have significant challenges in front of us.
  • 1:01 - 1:05
CO2 emissions are pouring into the atmosphere.
  • 1:05 - 1:08
If the global climate warms beyond an average increase of 2 degrees,
  • 1:08 - 1:12
the impact will be far more devastating than we can imagine.
  • 1:12 - 1:18
Community power and the Ontario Sustainable Energy Association (OSEA) is a way for people
  • 1:18 - 1:21
to share adversity and decide what to do about it
  • 1:21 - 1:24
    while creating economic benefits.
  • 1:24 - 1:29
The Green Energy and Green Economy Act is unlike anything else in North America.
  • 1:29 - 1:33
It created the framework for a cross-section of communities to come together
  • 1:33 - 1:36
and created the infrastructure to turn vision into action.
  • 1:36 - 1:38
We are faced with two paths:
  • 1:38 - 1:44
    The Hard Path: centralized production of energy with continuous consumption and limitless growth;
  • 1:44 - 1:51
or the Soft Path: local production of energy, locally owned with resilient and sustainable communities.
  • 1:51 - 1:55
We need to make a choice of which direction we want to take.
  • 1:55 - 2:01
The Hard Path is more of the same, and leads to irreversable consequences.
  • 2:01 - 2:06
We need to make this choice together to decide on the vision we want for our community.
  • 2:06 - 2:09
And to take action on what we want to create together.
  • 2:09 - 2:12
The greatest challenge is about leadership.
  • 2:12 - 2:15
Finding those people in the community who have the passion
  • 2:15 - 2:17
and who want to make a difference.
  • 2:17 - 2:19
That is where YOU come in.
  • 2:19 - 2:22
If you are a local guy, girl, a local group,
  • 2:22 - 2:25
a church, or a municpal leader, who sees the benefit
  • 2:25 - 2:29
of community power and you want to build community resilliancy.
  • 2:29 - 2:31
    But where to start?
  • 2:31 - 2:33
That is where we at OSEA come in.
  • 2:33 - 2:37
with our roadmap for getting your community power project from vision to reality.
  • 2:37 - 2:41
OSEA's Roadmap To Success Workshop will take you on a deep dive
  • 2:41 - 2:44
into the roadmap tools and techniques.
  • 2:44 - 2:47
We will create a project in your community
  • 2:47 - 2:48
and help you develop an action plan
  • 2:48 - 2:51
to bring it from vision to reality.
  • 2:51 - 2:55
The Community Energy Partnership Program (CEPP)
  • 2:55 - 2:58
offers a 90% grant on eligible activities
  • 2:58 - 3:03
that have the technical, financial and governing feasability of a community project.
  • 3:03 - 3:06
And the Act changed the Cooperatives Corporations Act
  • 3:06 - 3:10
to allow for the creation of a renewable energy cooperative
  • 3:10 - 3:12
as a means to encourage community involvement.
  • 3:12 - 3:16
Fun, challenging, paving the way for community-inspired actions
  • 3:16 - 3:18
    to save the planet.
  • 3:18 - 3:21
It's a reason to meet your neighbors throughout your community.
  • 3:21 - 3:25
It's a way for all of us to literally invest in the future.
  • 3:25 - 3:28
You'll be able to actually buy a share in the development
  • 3:28 - 3:32
from a community-operated renewable energy cooperative.
  • 3:32 - 3:35
    You'll be a member of a democratically-controlled investment opportunity
  • 3:35 - 3:39
who's primary role, after return to investors, shareholders, members,
  • 3:39 - 3:41
    is returned to the community.
  • 3:41 - 3:47
Supporting community sports, cultural, environmental, and other philanthropic activities.
  • 3:47 - 3:51
Is a renewable energy cooperative the right model for YOUR group?
  • 3:51 - 3:56
This is important to decide, as it will influence how you raise capital for the project.
  • 3:56 - 4:02
A 250 kilowatt solar PV can cost up to one million, five hundred thousand dollars.
  • 4:02 - 4:05
    That's a big investment for a community.
  • 4:05 - 4:09
A 2 megawatt wind project can be four to five million.
  • 4:09 - 4:11
    But communities are doing it.
  • 4:11 - 4:13
And sharing the investment opportunity locally,
  • 4:13 - 4:16
rather than with the ups and downs of the Stock Market.
  • 4:16 - 4:20
The same process is applicable to other renewable energy technologies.
  • 4:20 - 4:24
Now you are ready to submit your CEPP application.
  • 4:24 - 4:29
This will help you understand more of the technical, financial, and governance options.
  • 4:29 - 4:34
Through the OSEA Community Power Services Group, we can assist you through the application process
  • 4:34 - 4:37
as well as help you to manage your project.
  • 4:37 - 4:40
The Workshop will connect people with passion in the community
  • 4:40 - 4:42
with organizations and people with assets
  • 4:42 - 4:45
that can accommodate renewable generation projects:
  • 4:45 - 4:51
municipal buildings, hospitals, brownfield sites, used landfills, quarries, business rooftops.
  • 4:53 - 4:56
Once you've found the heart and mind of the community,
  • 4:56 - 5:00
then there is nothing stopping you from moving your project forward.
  • 5:00 - 5:02
And what do you know? Other things start to happen:
  • 5:02 - 5:04
    you begin to drive less,
  • 5:04 - 5:05
    shop locally,
  • 5:05 - 5:07
    get to meet new people,
  • 5:07 - 5:09
    build a community energy plan,
  • 5:09 - 5:13
influence local politicians on environmental matters.
  • 5:13 - 5:17
You have the capacity to act locally and think locally.
