Humble plants that hide surprising secrets

    You know, it's a big privilege for me

    to be working in one of the
    biodiversity hotspots in the world:

    the Mascarene Islands in the Indian Ocean.
  • 0:10 - 0:14
    These islands — Mauritius,
    Rodrigues, and Réunion —
  • 0:14 - 0:17
    along with the island of Madagascar,
  • 0:17 - 0:19
    they are blessed with unique plants
  • 0:19 - 0:21
    found nowhere else in the world.
  • 0:21 - 0:24
    And today I will tell you
    about five of them
  • 0:24 - 0:26
    and their particular features
  • 0:26 - 0:28
    and why these plants are so unique.
  • 0:28 - 0:30
    Take a look at this plant.
  • 0:30 - 0:33
    I call it benjoin in the local vernacular,
  • 0:33 - 0:37
    and the botanical name
    is Terminalia bentzoe,
  • 0:37 - 0:39
    subspecies bentzoe.
  • 0:39 - 0:43
    This subspecies is endemic to Mauritius,
  • 0:43 - 0:44
    and its particular feature
  • 0:44 - 0:47
    is its heterophylly.
  • 0:47 - 0:49
    What do I mean by heterophylly?
  • 0:49 - 0:50
    It's that the same plant
  • 0:50 - 0:54
    has got leaves that are different shapes and sizes.
  • 0:54 - 0:55
    Now, these plants have evolved
  • 0:55 - 0:58
    very far away from the mainland,
  • 0:58 - 1:01
    and within specific ecosystems.
  • 1:01 - 1:04
    Often, these particular features
  • 1:04 - 1:07
    have evolved as a response to the threat
  • 1:07 - 1:09
    presented by the local fauna,
  • 1:09 - 1:13
    in this case, grazing tortoises.
  • 1:13 - 1:16
    Tortoises are known to have poor eyesight,
  • 1:16 - 1:18
    and as such, they tend to avoid the plants
  • 1:18 - 1:20
    they don't recognize.
  • 1:20 - 1:24
    So this evolutionary
    foil safeguards the plant
  • 1:24 - 1:27
    against these rather cute animals,
  • 1:27 - 1:32
    and protects it and of course
    ensures its survival.
  • 1:32 - 1:35
    Now the question you're
    probably asking yourself is,
  • 1:35 - 1:38
    why is she telling us all these stories?
  • 1:38 - 1:41
    The reason for that is that we tend to overlook
  • 1:41 - 1:46
    the diversity and the variety of the natural world.
  • 1:46 - 1:49
    These particular habitats are unique
  • 1:49 - 1:53
    and they are host to a whole lot of plants.
  • 1:53 - 1:55
    We don't realize how valuable
  • 1:55 - 1:58
    and how precious these resources are,
  • 1:58 - 2:00
    and yet, through our insouciance,
  • 2:00 - 2:02
    we keep on destroying them.
  • 2:02 - 2:04
    We're all familiar
  • 2:04 - 2:07
    with the macro impact of urbanization,
  • 2:07 - 2:10
    climate change, resource exploitation,
  • 2:10 - 2:12
    but when that one last plant —
  • 2:12 - 2:15
    or animal for that matter —
  • 2:15 - 2:17
    when that very last specimen
  • 2:17 - 2:19
    has disappeared from the face of this Earth,
  • 2:19 - 2:20
    we would have lost
  • 2:20 - 2:24
    an entire subset of the Earth's biology,
  • 2:24 - 2:28
    and with it, important plants
    with medicinal potential
  • 2:28 - 2:30
    or which could have ingredients
  • 2:30 - 2:31
    that would speak to the cosmetic,
  • 2:31 - 2:33
    nutrition, pharma,
  • 2:33 - 2:36
    and even the ethno-veterinary sectors,
  • 2:36 - 2:37
    be gone forever.
  • 2:37 - 2:39
    And here we have a very prime example
  • 2:39 - 2:42
    of the iconic dodo, which comes from Mauritius,
  • 2:42 - 2:47
    and, of course, we know is
    now a symbol of extinction.
  • 2:47 - 2:49
    We know plants have a
    fundamental role to play.
  • 2:49 - 2:51
    Well, first of all, they feed us
  • 2:51 - 2:54
    and they also give us
    the oxygen we breathe,
  • 2:54 - 2:56
    but plants are also the source
  • 2:56 - 3:00
    of important, biologically active ingredients
  • 3:00 - 3:03
    that we should be studying very carefully,
  • 3:03 - 3:07
    because human societies over the millennia,
  • 3:07 - 3:10
    they have developed important knowledge,
  • 3:10 - 3:12
    cultural traditions,
  • 3:12 - 3:16
    and important plant-based medicinal resources.
  • 3:16 - 3:18
    Here's a data point:
  • 3:18 - 3:23
    1.4 percent of the entire land surface
  • 3:23 - 3:26
    is home to 40 percent of
    the species of higher plants,
  • 3:26 - 3:29
    35 percent of the species of vertebrates,
  • 3:29 - 3:32
    and this 1.4 percent
  • 3:32 - 3:36
    represents the 25 biodiversity hotspots in the world,
  • 3:36 - 3:40
    and this 1.4 percent of the entire land surface
  • 3:40 - 3:42
    already provides for 35 percent
  • 3:42 - 3:44
    of the ecosystem services
  • 3:44 - 3:47
    that vulnerable people depend on.
  • 3:47 - 3:48
    And as you can see,
  • 3:48 - 3:50
    the island of Mauritius
  • 3:50 - 3:52
    where I work and where I live,
  • 3:52 - 3:54
    belongs to one such biodiversity hotspot,
  • 3:54 - 3:57
    and I study the unique plants
  • 3:57 - 4:00
    on the island for their
    biomedical applications.
  • 4:00 - 4:02
    Now, let's go back again
  • 4:02 - 4:04
    to that first plant I showed you,
  • 4:04 - 4:07
    the one, of course, with
    different-shaped leaves
  • 4:07 - 4:09
    and different sizes, Terminalia bentzoe,
  • 4:09 - 4:11
    subspecies bentzoe,
  • 4:11 - 4:14
    a plant only found in Mauritius.
  • 4:14 - 4:15
    Now, the local people,
  • 4:15 - 4:17
    they used a decoction of the leaves
  • 4:17 - 4:20
    against infectious diseases.
  • 4:20 - 4:22
    Now our work, that is,
  • 4:22 - 4:26
    the scientific validation of
    this traditional information,
  • 4:26 - 4:28
    has shown that precisely
  • 4:28 - 4:32
    that leaf extract shows activity, potent activity,
  • 4:32 - 4:34
    against a wide range of bacteria
  • 4:34 - 4:37
    that could be pathogenic to humans.
  • 4:37 - 4:40
    Now, could this plant be the answer
  • 4:40 - 4:42
    to antibiotic resistance?
  • 4:42 - 4:45
    You know, antibiotic resistance is proving to be
  • 4:45 - 4:48
    a big challenge globally.
  • 4:48 - 4:50
    While we may not be sure, one thing is certain:
  • 4:50 - 4:53
    we will not want this plant to disappear.
  • 4:53 - 4:56
    But the harsh reality is that
  • 4:56 - 4:58
    this particular plant is in fact
  • 4:58 - 4:59
    considered to be vulnerable
  • 4:59 - 5:02
    in its natural habitat.
  • 5:02 - 5:04
    This brings me to another example.
  • 5:04 - 5:08
    This bush here is known as baume de l'ile plate
  • 5:08 - 5:09
    in the local vernacular.
  • 5:09 - 5:12
    The botanical name is Psiadia arguta.
  • 5:12 - 5:14
    It's a plant which is rare,
  • 5:14 - 5:17
    which is endemic to Mauritius.
  • 5:17 - 5:18
    It used to grow on the mainland,
  • 5:18 - 5:20
    but through the sheer
    pressures of urbanization
  • 5:20 - 5:22
    has been pushed out of the mainland,
  • 5:22 - 5:24
    and we've managed to bring it back
  • 5:24 - 5:26
    from the brink of extinction
  • 5:26 - 5:28
    by developing in vitro plants
  • 5:28 - 5:30
    which are now growing in the wild.
  • 5:30 - 5:32
    Now, one thing I must
    point out straightaway
  • 5:32 - 5:35
    is that not all plants
  • 5:35 - 5:38
    can be developed in vitro.
  • 5:38 - 5:41
    While we humans, we are
    happy in our comfort zone,
  • 5:41 - 5:44
    these plants also need
  • 5:44 - 5:46
    their ecosystem to be preserved,
  • 5:46 - 5:48
    and they don't react — endemic plants
  • 5:48 - 5:52
    don't react to very harsh
    changes in their ecosystem,
  • 5:52 - 5:54
    and yet we know what are the challenges
  • 5:54 - 5:55
    that climate change, for example,
  • 5:55 - 5:57
    is posing to these plants.
  • 5:57 - 5:59
    Now, the local people again use the leaves
  • 5:59 - 6:01
    in traditional medicine
  • 6:01 - 6:04
    against respiratory problems.
  • 6:04 - 6:06
    Now, our preliminary labwork
  • 6:06 - 6:08
    on the leaf extract has shown
  • 6:08 - 6:12
    that precisely these
    leaves contain ingredients
  • 6:12 - 6:15
    that are very close,
    in terms of structures,
  • 6:15 - 6:17
    chemical structures, to those medicines
  • 6:17 - 6:19
    which are sold in the chemist's shop
  • 6:19 - 6:21
    against asthma.
  • 6:21 - 6:23
    So who knows
  • 6:23 - 6:25
    what humanity will benefit from
  • 6:25 - 6:30
    should this plant decide
    to reveal all its secrets.
  • 6:30 - 6:33
    Now, I come from the developing world
  • 6:33 - 6:35
    where we are forever being
    challenged with this issue
  • 6:35 - 6:38
    of population explosion.
  • 6:38 - 6:41
    Africa is the continent
    which is getting younger,
  • 6:41 - 6:44
    and whenever one talks
    about population explosion,
  • 6:44 - 6:47
    one talks about the issue of food security
  • 6:47 - 6:50
    as being the other side of the same coin.
  • 6:50 - 6:52
    Now this plant here, the baobab,
  • 6:52 - 6:53
    could be part of the answer.
  • 6:53 - 6:57
    It's an underutilized, neglected food plant.
  • 6:57 - 6:59
    It defines the landscape of West Africa,
  • 6:59 - 7:02
    where it is known as the tree of life,
  • 7:02 - 7:04
    and later on I will tell you why
  • 7:04 - 7:07
    the Africans consider it to be the tree of life.
  • 7:07 - 7:09
    Now interestingly, there are many legends
  • 7:09 - 7:11
    which are associated with this plant.
  • 7:11 - 7:13
    Because of its sheer size,
  • 7:13 - 7:16
    it was meant to be lording over lesser plants,
  • 7:16 - 7:18
    so God didn't like this arrogance,
  • 7:18 - 7:21
    uprooted it, and planted it upside down,
  • 7:21 - 7:23
    hence its particular shape.
  • 7:23 - 7:26
    And if you look at this tree again
  • 7:26 - 7:28
    within the African context,
  • 7:28 - 7:32
    in West Africa, it's known
    as the palaver tree,
  • 7:32 - 7:35
    because it performs great social functions.
  • 7:35 - 7:37
    Now if you have a problem in the community,
  • 7:37 - 7:39
    meeting under the palaver tree
  • 7:39 - 7:41
    with the chiefs or the tribesmen
  • 7:41 - 7:43
    would be synonymous to trying to find a solution
  • 7:43 - 7:44
    to that particular problem,
  • 7:44 - 7:47
    and also to reinforce trust and respect
  • 7:47 - 7:50
    among members of the community.
  • 7:50 - 7:52
    From the scientific point of view,
  • 7:52 - 7:55
    there are eight species of baobab in the world.
  • 7:55 - 7:57
    There's one from Africa,
  • 7:57 - 7:58
    one from Australia,
  • 7:58 - 8:01
    and six are endemic
  • 8:01 - 8:03
    to the island of Madagascar.
  • 8:03 - 8:04
    The one I have showed you
  • 8:04 - 8:06
    is the one from Africa,
  • 8:06 - 8:08
    Adansonia digitata.
  • 8:08 - 8:10
    Now, the flower, this
    beautiful white flower,
  • 8:10 - 8:12
    it opens at night, is pollinated by bats,
  • 8:12 - 8:15
    and it gives rise to the fruit
  • 8:15 - 8:16
    which is curiously known
  • 8:16 - 8:18
    as the monkey apple.
  • 8:18 - 8:20
    The monkeys are not stupid animals.
  • 8:20 - 8:21
    They know what's good for them.
  • 8:21 - 8:24
    Now, if you open the fruit of the baobab,
  • 8:24 - 8:27
    you'll see a white, floury pulp,
  • 8:27 - 8:29
    which is very rich in nutrients
  • 8:29 - 8:31
    and has got protein,
  • 8:31 - 8:35
    more protein than in human milk.
  • 8:35 - 8:37
    Yes, you heard right:
  • 8:37 - 8:41
    more protein than in human milk.
  • 8:41 - 8:42
    And this is one of the reasons why
  • 8:42 - 8:44
    the nutrition companies of this world,
  • 8:44 - 8:47
    they are looking for this fruit to provide
  • 8:47 - 8:49
    what we know as reinforced food.
  • 8:49 - 8:53
    The seeds give an oil, a very stable oil
  • 8:53 - 8:56
    which is sought after
    by the cosmetic industry
  • 8:56 - 9:00
    to give to produce body lotions, for example.
  • 9:00 - 9:01
    And if you look at the trunk,
  • 9:01 - 9:05
    the trunk, of course, safeguards water,
  • 9:05 - 9:08
    which is often harvested by a thirsty traveler,
  • 9:08 - 9:09
    and the leaves are used in traditional medicine
  • 9:09 - 9:11
    against infectious disease.
  • 9:11 - 9:14
    Now, you can see now why the Africans consider it
  • 9:14 - 9:16
    to be the tree of life.
  • 9:16 - 9:17
    It's a complete plant,
  • 9:17 - 9:20
    and in fact, the sheer size of these trees
  • 9:20 - 9:22
    is hiding a massive potential,
  • 9:22 - 9:25
    not only for the pharma, nutrition,
    and the cosmetic industry.
  • 9:25 - 9:27
    What I have showed you here
  • 9:27 - 9:30
    is only the species from Africa,
  • 9:30 - 9:31
    Adansonia digitata.
  • 9:31 - 9:34
    We have six species yet in Madagascar,
  • 9:34 - 9:38
    and we don't know what
    is the potential of this plant,
  • 9:38 - 9:40
    but one thing we know is that the flora
  • 9:40 - 9:43
    is considered to be
    threatened with extinction.
  • 9:43 - 9:46
    Let me take you to Africa again,
  • 9:46 - 9:48
    and introduce you to one of my very favorite,
  • 9:48 - 9:50
    the resurrection plant.
  • 9:50 - 9:51
    Now here you'll find
  • 9:51 - 9:53
    that even Jesus has competition.
  • 9:53 - 9:55
    (Laughter)
  • 9:55 - 9:58
    Now, this plant here has developed
  • 9:58 - 10:01
    remarkable tolerance to drought,
  • 10:01 - 10:03
    which enables it to withstand
  • 10:03 - 10:07
    up to 98 percent dehydration
    over the period of a year
  • 10:07 - 10:09
    without damage,
  • 10:09 - 10:14
    and yet it can regenerate
    itself almost completely
  • 10:14 - 10:18
    overnight, over 24 hours, and flower.
  • 10:18 - 10:20
    Now, us human beings,
  • 10:20 - 10:23
    we're always on the lookout for the elixir of youth.
  • 10:23 - 10:25
    We don't want to get old, and rightly so.
  • 10:25 - 10:28
    Why should we, especially if you can afford it?
  • 10:28 - 10:30
    And this gives you an indication
  • 10:30 - 10:33
    of what the plant looks like before.
  • 10:33 - 10:36
    Now, if you are an inexperienced gardener,
  • 10:36 - 10:38
    the first thing you'll do
    when you visit the garden
  • 10:38 - 10:41
    is to uproot this plant because it's dead.
  • 10:41 - 10:46
    But if you water it, this is what you get.
  • 10:46 - 10:48
    Absolutely amazing.
  • 10:48 - 10:50
    Now, if you look at our aging process,
  • 10:50 - 10:53
    the aging process is in fact the loss of water
  • 10:53 - 10:56
    from the upper epidermis, resulting in wrinkling
  • 10:56 - 10:57
    as we know it, especially women,
  • 10:57 - 10:59
    we are so conscious of this.
  • 10:59 - 11:04
    And this plant, in fact, is giving
    the cosmetic chemists
  • 11:04 - 11:06
    very important ingredients
  • 11:06 - 11:09
    that are actually finding ways
  • 11:09 - 11:11
    to slow down the aging process
  • 11:11 - 11:13
    and at the same time reinforce the cells
  • 11:13 - 11:18
    against the onslaught of environmental toxins.
  • 11:18 - 11:20
    Now, these four examples
  • 11:20 - 11:23
    I have just given you
  • 11:23 - 11:27
    are just a very tiny reminder
  • 11:27 - 11:30
    as to how our health
  • 11:30 - 11:34
    and our survival are closely linked
  • 11:34 - 11:37
    to the health and the resilience
  • 11:37 - 11:39
    of our ecosystem,
  • 11:39 - 11:41
    and why we should be very careful
  • 11:41 - 11:43
    about preserving biodiversity.
  • 11:43 - 11:46
    Every time a forest is cut down,
  • 11:46 - 11:50
    every time a marsh is filled in,
  • 11:50 - 11:54
    it is a potential lab that goes with it,
  • 11:54 - 11:56
    and which we will never, ever recover.
  • 11:56 - 11:58
    And I know what I'm talking about,
  • 11:58 - 12:01
    coming from Mauritius and missing the dodo.
  • 12:01 - 12:05
    Let me finish with just one last example.
  • 12:05 - 12:09
    Conservation issues are normally guided
  • 12:09 - 12:12
    towards rare, endemic plants,
  • 12:12 - 12:15
    but what we call exotic plants,
  • 12:15 - 12:18
    that is, the ones which grow in many
    different habitats across the world,
  • 12:18 - 12:21
    they also need to be considered.
  • 12:21 - 12:24
    You know why? Because the environment plays
  • 12:24 - 12:26
    a very important role
  • 12:26 - 12:28
    in modifying the composition of that plant.
  • 12:28 - 12:31
    So let's take a look at this plant here,
  • 12:31 - 12:33
    Centella asiatica. It's a weed.
  • 12:33 - 12:35
    We call it a weed.
  • 12:35 - 12:38
    Now, Centella asiatica
    grows across the world
  • 12:38 - 12:41
    in many different habitats —
    in Africa, in Asia —
  • 12:41 - 12:43
    and this plant has been instrumental
  • 12:43 - 12:46
    in providing a solution
    to that dreadful disease
  • 12:46 - 12:50
    called leprosy in Madagascar in the 1940s.
  • 12:50 - 12:54
    Now, while Centella
    grows across the world —
  • 12:54 - 12:57
    in Africa, in Asia —
    the best quality Centella
  • 12:57 - 13:00
    comes from Madagascar,
  • 13:00 - 13:04
    because that Centella contains
    the three vital ingredients
  • 13:04 - 13:06
    which are sought after by the pharma
  • 13:06 - 13:09
    and the cosmetic companies.
  • 13:09 - 13:11
    And the cosmetic companies
    are already using it
  • 13:11 - 13:14
    to make regenerating cream.
  • 13:14 - 13:17
    Now, there is an ancient saying
  • 13:17 - 13:20
    that for every disease known to mankind,
  • 13:20 - 13:22
    there is a plant to cure it.
  • 13:22 - 13:25
    Now, you may not
    believe in ancient sayings.
  • 13:25 - 13:26
    You may think they're obsolete
  • 13:26 - 13:29
    now that our science and
    technology are so powerful.
  • 13:29 - 13:31
    So you may look on Centella as being
  • 13:31 - 13:34
    an insignificant, humble weed,
  • 13:34 - 13:38
    which, if destroyed, won't be missed.
  • 13:38 - 13:40
    But you know, there is no such thing as a weed.
  • 13:40 - 13:42
    It's a plant.
  • 13:42 - 13:45
    It's a living biological lab
  • 13:45 - 13:47
    that may well have answers
  • 13:47 - 13:49
    to the question that we may have,
  • 13:49 - 13:51
    but we have to ensure
  • 13:51 - 13:53
    that it has the right to live.
  • 13:53 - 13:55
