Recenzja: Memrise.com (zacząłem się uczyć trochę ... chińskiego?!)

  • 0:02 - 0:05
    Hello! David Snopek here.
  • 0:05 - 0:13
Today I'm going to record a short video in English to go along with an article on my blog.
  • 0:13 - 0:17
I'm going to try to switch between English videos and Polish videos more often
  • 0:17 - 0:22
so that you can practice listening in English as well.
  • 0:22 - 0:26
Anyway, in this video I'm going to do 2 things.
  • 0:26 - 0:30
    1. I'm going to walk you through how to use Memrise.com,
  • 0:30 - 0:35
which is a website that helps you learn words and phrases in a foreign language.
  • 0:35 - 0:42
I've been using it for about 2 or 3 weeks, learning how to read a menu in Chinese.
  • 0:42 - 0:50
If you're wondering why I'm learning Chinese, or want to read my full review of Memrise, please read the article on my blog.
  • 0:50 - 0:55
There are links in the description below and on top of the video.
  • 0:55 - 1:00
    2. Carrie and I are going to go eat at a Chinese restaurant
  • 1:00 - 1:04
and we're going to record the whole thing so you can come with us.
  • 1:04 - 1:07
    Alright, let's go!
  • 1:08 - 1:12
    Alright, here is Memrize.com.
  • 1:12 - 1:16
You can log in with Facebook.
  • 1:16 - 1:20
Here is my home screen after logging in.
  • 1:20 - 1:22
Here are the courses I'm taking.
  • 1:22 - 1:28
and you can see "Learn Basic Chinese: read a menu!".
  • 1:28 - 1:32
Here are all the levels in this course.
  • 1:32 - 1:35
Memrise has a very unusual metaphor.
  • 1:35 - 1:42
that you "plant" a new level and then "water" old items to review them.
  • 1:42 - 1:45
So each level is a plant.
  • 1:45 - 1:47
First you plant it and then you water it.
  • 1:47 - 1:52
You can see I have 14 items that are ready to be watered.
  • 1:52 - 2:00
So when I first log in I come here and click "water 14 items".
  • 2:01 - 2:05
    That is beef.
  • 2:06 - 2:11
It's asking me, "What is this Chinese character?" and I have to type the English for it.
  • 2:11 - 2:16
That is meat. The other meat.
  • 2:17 - 2:21
    That is chicken.
  • 2:22 - 2:26
    Chicken egg noodles
  • 2:26 - 2:30
    That is this one.
  • 2:30 - 2:35
    That is egg.
  • 2:36 - 2:44
Beef fried rice. Here is beef fried rice.
  • 2:44 - 2:48
And here you see I have just completed my watering session.
  • 2:48 - 2:53
I can continue watering or I can go back to my course.
  • 2:53 - 2:56
You can see that I got all the answers correct.
  • 2:56 - 2:59
    I earned this many points.
  • 2:59 - 3:05
I'm going to go back to the course.
  • 3:05 - 3:14
When you learn a new level, you are "planting" it. So let's go to a level I haven't done: "5 more dishes!"
  • 3:14 - 3:17
Here are all the items that will be in this level.
  • 3:17 - 3:20
Those are all the things I'm going to learn.
  • 3:20 - 3:26
To begin I click "Start planting."
  • 3:28 - 3:32
Soy sauce fried rice. Ok, so this part means soy sauce.
  • 3:32 - 3:35
    That's "fried" and that's "rice."
  • 3:35 - 3:42
Now I have to choose a "Mem" to help me remember it.
  • 3:46 - 3:48
Yeah, actually I think this one's the best.
  • 3:48 - 3:58
This is what each of those characters mean. That will help me remember this the best... sauce oil fried rice.
  • 3:58 - 4:04
Alright, now I'm learning "preserved vegetables and pork noodles".
  • 4:04 - 4:09
And then we simply start reviewing what we've learned, just like before when I was watering.
  • 4:09 - 4:13
So green vegetable and pork noodles.
  • 4:13 - 4:19
Hmm, that was green vegetable shredded pork noodles. I think this one.
  • 4:19 - 4:23
Ooh, I got it wrong. It was this one.
  • 4:23 - 4:27
Yeah, green vegetable, meat (shredded), noodles.
  • 4:27 - 4:32
Red braised pork noodles... I think that's this one.
  • 4:32 - 4:34
    Yes!
  • 4:36 - 4:46
And then you continue to learn the new items and review, learn new items and review until you are done with the level.
  • 4:46 - 4:54
So that was Memrise! As you can see there are many new levels you can learn and many more courses you can do.
  • 4:54 - 4:59
If you're interested in my full review of Memrise, please read the article on my blog.
  • 4:59 - 5:01
    There's a link below.
  • 5:02 - 5:07
Alright! We're about to go to a Chinese restaurant so I can practice reading the menu
  • 5:07 - 5:12
to see how much I can read after learning on Memrise for a couple weeks.
  • 5:12 - 5:18
We're bringing our chopsticks, which we bought in Chinatown in San Francisco.
  • 5:18 - 5:23
It's going to be awesome. I love Chinese food. Let's go!
  • 5:43 - 5:47
What is your favorite Chinese food?
  • 5:47 - 5:50
    Cream Cheese Wontons.
  • 5:50 - 5:52
So, what's your favorite Chinese food?
  • 5:52 - 5:56
My favorite Chinese food is Vegetable Fried Rice.
  • 6:38 - 6:44
Ok. So, the menu does have Chinese on it, however I don't know many of the characters.
  • 6:44 - 6:50
I recognize this one is "cow" and this one is "meat" so that means "beef".
  • 6:50 - 6:55
And I've got "Beef Tenderloin". There's another beef... beef... beef...
  • 6:55 - 6:59
Oh, and that one means "fried" -- that third character right there.
  • 6:59 - 7:07
So I can recognize a little bit, but I think I need to spend more time before I can really read the menu.
  • 7:09 - 7:12
    Mmm... The tea smells good!
  • 7:18 - 7:22
    Mmm... It's very good!
  • 7:23 - 7:26
I think I might just get some soup...
  • 7:26 - 7:29
Ok. I've got to find my Zodiac.
  • 7:29 - 7:40
Actually, I've never really paid attention to the Chinese Zodiac, so I'm not sure which one is me.
  • 7:41 - 7:47
I've got to find 80, which would mean... 81...
  • 7:47 - 7:50
    Oh jeez... 84...
  • 7:50 - 7:54
    Hey!
  • 7:54 - 8:01
1983... Those born under the Chinese Zodiac sign of the Pig are extremely nice, good-mannered and tasteful!
  • 8:01 - 8:05
    That sounds really complimentary!
  • 8:24 - 8:25
    How was your food?
  • 8:25 - 8:28
It was fantastic! How was yours?
  • 8:28 - 8:30
    It was delicious.
  • 8:30 - 8:35
    Now, our fortune cookies.
  • 8:36 - 8:40
    Let me see...
  • 8:41 - 8:47
You will be fortunate in the opportunities presented to you. I like that!
  • 8:52 - 8:56
Now is a lucky time for you. Take a chance!
