Philips Norelco OneBlade vs MicroTouch Solo

  • 0:00 - 0:03
Well, it's time for another shaving video
  • 0:03 - 0:06
    from Freakin' Reviews here.
    The third one mid-2017,
  • 0:06 - 0:09
    and this time I'm putting
    the Micro Touch Solo
  • 0:09 - 0:12
    versus the Philips Norelco OneBlade.
    That's today's review.
  • 0:12 - 0:14
So, let's get right to it.
  • 0:16 - 0:18
You may have seen my review
for the Micro Touch Solo recently,
  • 0:18 - 0:21
    but that was obviously inspired
    by or influenced by
  • 0:21 - 0:24
    the Philips Norelco OneBlade.
    So, today I'm gonna
  • 0:24 - 0:27
take a look at the two of these
    and compare them side-by-side,
  • 0:27 - 0:30
    head-to-head, and see
if one is a clear winner.
  • 0:30 - 0:33
    As you can see,
the heads look similar to each other.
  • 0:33 - 0:35
    I've been using the
Micro Touch Solo quite a bit.
  • 0:35 - 0:37
I've used the OneBlade in the past,
    but I've never own one.
  • 0:38 - 0:40
So, I'll be curious to see
    how the two compare
  • 0:40 - 0:43
    in a more challenging environment.
    So, let's see how
  • 0:43 - 0:44
    the two of these do.
  • 0:45 - 0:47
    Here are the instructions
    for the Micro Touch Solo.
  • 0:48 - 0:49
    Pretty basic.
  • 0:49 - 0:52
    This is the instruction sheet
  • 0:52 - 0:54
    for the OneBlade.
  • 0:55 - 0:56
    A lot more to it.
  • 0:56 - 0:58
    I would say the
    most significant differences
  • 0:58 - 1:01
    right out of the gate
are that the OneBlade can be used
  • 1:01 - 1:03
with gel or foam in the shower
  • 1:03 - 1:05
while the Micro Touch Solo cannot.
  • 1:05 - 1:07
    It's only for dry shaving.
  • 1:08 - 1:09
    Now, the other difference
    is the Micro Touch Solo
  • 1:09 - 1:13
is about $10 less than the OneBlade.
    This is about $25.
  • 1:13 - 1:14
    This is about $35.
  • 1:15 - 1:16
So, that might also be a consideration.
  • 1:16 - 1:18
If you're not using it in the shower
    for wet shaving,
  • 1:19 - 1:21
    the Micro Touch Solo
could be an option for you,
  • 1:21 - 1:24
but let's see how they compare
    going against this beard.
  • 1:24 - 1:27
    Here we are again
    for my third shaving video
  • 1:27 - 1:28
    in a few months.
  • 1:28 - 1:31
This time, I'm going to do
    the Philips OneBlade
  • 1:31 - 1:33
    versus the Micro Touch Solo.
  • 1:34 - 1:36
Now, what I think I'm going
to do is instead of doing
  • 1:36 - 1:38
one side, OneBlade, one side, Solo,
  • 1:38 - 1:39
    I think I'm gonna do
  • 1:40 - 1:41
    one stripe
  • 1:41 - 1:43
    next to each other,
so you can kind of compare.
  • 1:44 - 1:46
    Now, there is one thing
    that the OneBlade can do
  • 1:46 - 1:48
that the Micro Touch Solo can't,
    and that's that
  • 1:48 - 1:49
it could be used with shaving cream.
  • 1:49 - 1:51
I'm gonna do the both these dry,
    both of them
  • 1:51 - 1:53
    say you're supposed to use
    them against the grain.
  • 1:53 - 1:54
    So, I'm gonna do that.
  • 1:54 - 1:57
    But, once I'm done,
I'm gonna put some shaving cream on
  • 1:57 - 1:59
and see if I can get closer
    with the OneBlade,
  • 1:59 - 2:02
    because the Micro Touch Solo
    was not for use
  • 2:02 - 2:03
with shaving cream or in the shower.
  • 2:03 - 2:05
So, I'm gonna see if this can go
    to the next level.
  • 2:06 - 2:08
One more thing to point out
    Is they both have
  • 2:08 - 2:10
    about a 45-minute charge.
  • 2:10 - 2:12
They also both have these combs
    that you can use
  • 2:12 - 2:14
    for additional trimming.
  • 2:14 - 2:17
The Micro Touch Solo has this fancy light
  • 2:17 - 2:20
which the OneBlade does not have,
    so the slight differences.
  • 2:20 - 2:23
But, let's see how they compare
as I put them to test,
  • 2:23 - 2:26
    getting rid of my beard
for the third time this year.
  • 2:27 - 2:50
    (shaving noise)
  • 2:50 - 2:53
And, that took a couple of times
    to get that right.
  • 2:54 - 2:56
    It's not completely
  • 2:57 - 2:59
    without stubble right now.
I had to go a couple of times.
  • 2:59 - 3:01
It was- I had to kind of
    get the angle of it.
  • 3:02 - 3:03
    Let's see now how
  • 3:03 - 3:06
    the Micro Touch Solo does
    right next to it.
  • 3:06 - 3:08
I'm gonna do this section right here.
  • 3:09 - 3:31
    (shaving noise)
  • 3:32 - 3:34
Okay. I mean you can't see
    a huge difference.
  • 3:34 - 3:35
    Let me keep going.
  • 3:36 - 3:39
I'm gonna do the Solo again
    on the other side,
  • 3:39 - 3:40
so you can kind of have-
    because, there wasn't
  • 3:40 - 3:41
    a lot of space there.
  • 3:42 - 3:44
I'm going to do the Solo,
    OneBlade, and Solo again,
  • 3:44 - 3:47
    and then the last strip
    I'll do the Philips again.
  • 3:47 - 3:55
    (shaving noise)
  • 3:55 - 3:56
That was good the second time.
    That was a pretty good
  • 3:56 - 3:58
    stripe going up,
but that was just one pass.
  • 3:59 - 4:01
Got a lot of it out.
I'm gonna do this last section here
  • 4:01 - 4:02
    with the
  • 4:03 - 4:04
    Philips OneBlade now.
  • 4:04 - 4:23
    (shaving noise)
  • 4:24 - 4:26
    Just to point out,
this one just came off of the charger.
  • 4:27 - 4:29
    And, actually they both
just came off the charger as well.
  • 4:30 - 4:32
But, this one. Notice how much
    slower it sounds.
  • 4:32 - 4:40
    (shaving noise)
  • 4:40 - 4:42
    It could be the difference
    that the motor is stronger
  • 4:42 - 4:44
that's why it has a higher pitch to it.
  • 4:44 - 4:46
I mean I'll let some of the more
    tech-savy guys
  • 4:47 - 4:49
discuss that, but it seems like
    this motor, it might be
  • 4:50 - 4:52
    moving a little bit stronger
    than the Micro Touch Solo.
  • 4:52 - 4:53
    But,
  • 4:54 - 4:55
I mean if you look at where I did
  • 4:57 - 5:00
    the Micro Touch Solo,
the OneBlade, the Solo, the OneBlade,
  • 5:01 - 5:03
    there isn't a huge amount
    of difference really
  • 5:03 - 5:04
    between the two of them.
  • 5:04 - 5:05
I had to go get some more light with my
  • 5:06 - 5:08
    Bell+Howell Light Bar
    which I've also reviewed.
  • 5:08 - 5:10
I'm going to do the same thing now.
    I'm gonna do
  • 5:10 - 5:13
    one stripe with the OneBlade,
    and then one
  • 5:14 - 5:15
    with the Micro Touch Solo
    and see how that looks.
  • 5:16 - 5:17
    Here we go.
  • 5:17 - 5:31
    (shaving noise)
  • 5:31 - 5:32
    That went-
  • 5:32 - 5:35
I was going on the up grain
    and it wasn't doing anything.
  • 5:35 - 5:36
    At down, it seems like
    it's working better.
  • 5:36 - 5:48
    (shaving noise)
  • 5:48 - 5:50
So, what do you guys think
    about those sideburns?
  • 5:50 - 5:51
    Maybe I should leave
    those next time, huh?
  • 5:52 - 5:53
That doesn't be real things? All right.
  • 5:53 - 5:55
So, now what I'm gonna do next
    to that is here,
  • 5:55 - 5:58
    this is the Philips OneBlade.
Next up the Micro Touch Solo.
  • 5:59 - 6:12
    (shaving noise)
  • 6:12 - 6:17
    Again, still not bad.
I just feel like this just came off
  • 6:17 - 6:18
the charger and it feels like
  • 6:18 - 6:19
    (shaving noise)
  • 6:19 - 6:20
it doesn't have as much power
  • 6:20 - 6:20
    as,
  • 6:20 - 6:21
    (shaving noise)
  • 6:21 - 6:22
    as that.
  • 6:23 - 6:25
Let me finish this part up
    with the OneBlade now.
  • 6:25 - 6:39
    (shaving noise)
  • 6:39 - 6:41
    Okay. And, I'm gonna
    do this last section
  • 6:41 - 6:42
    with the Micro Touch Solo.
  • 6:42 - 6:51
    (shaving noise)
  • 6:51 - 6:53
And with either one of them,
    you can use the edge
  • 6:53 - 6:54
    like this to trim.
  • 6:54 - 6:59
    (shaving noise)
  • 6:59 - 7:03
All right. So, there you go.
I mean I think that as far just
  • 7:03 - 7:06
    dry shaving, the really close
  • 7:06 - 7:08
I did kind of it in stripes.
    And, I don't see any
  • 7:08 - 7:11
huge difference between the two of them.
  • 7:11 - 7:13
    What I'm gonna do now
is I'm going to add some
  • 7:13 - 7:16
    shaving cream to see
if the OneBlade can go one step
  • 7:16 - 7:18
beyond what the Micro Touch Solo can do.
  • 7:21 - 7:23
    This isn't a real thick
    shaving cream. It's a
  • 7:23 - 7:25
    sensitive skin, so it's,
  • 7:25 - 7:27
    it doesn't look real thick
    like your typical
  • 7:27 - 7:29
    shaving cream does,
but it is actually pretty good.
  • 7:30 - 7:31
All right. There is, there is
    shaving cream on there.
  • 7:31 - 7:33
    And, this doesn't lather
    or a lot like some
  • 7:33 - 7:34
    of those shaving creams do.
  • 7:34 - 7:36
Again, the Solo cannot be used
    with shaving cream,
  • 7:36 - 7:39
but the OneBlade can be used
    with shaving cream.
  • 7:39 - 8:12
    (shaving noise)
  • 8:12 - 8:14
Okay. Let me wipe this off
    and see how it compares.
  • 8:18 - 8:20
    Yeah. There, there is definitely
    a difference.
  • 8:20 - 8:21
    Look at this.
  • 8:21 - 8:24
    If you look very closely,
    I'm sorry I probably won't want
  • 8:24 - 8:25
to be that close to me either, but
  • 8:26 - 8:27
you can see that's almost like,
  • 8:28 - 8:30
    that's almost as close
    as a regular razor.
  • 8:30 - 8:32
    Over here, you still have
    a little bit of stubble.
  • 8:34 - 8:35
    This is just dry,
  • 8:35 - 8:37
and this is with shaving cream.
  • 8:38 - 8:39
    Definitely a difference.
  • 8:40 - 8:42
    And unfortunately,
    the Micro Touch Solo doesn't
  • 8:43 - 8:45
allow you to use shaving cream
    or in the shower,
  • 8:45 - 8:48
so that's as close as you're
    gonna get with a Solo.
  • 8:48 - 8:51
And, that's how close you're gonna get
    with the OneBlade
  • 8:51 - 8:52
    using shaving cream.
  • 8:52 - 8:54
Just by the fact that it can be used
    in the shower
  • 8:54 - 8:57
    with shaving cream,
    the OneBlade has an advantage.
  • 8:57 - 8:59
    Although if you're never
    gonna use those things,
  • 8:59 - 9:02
    just want a quick trim,
the Micro Touch Solo does a great job.
  • 9:02 - 9:04
Now, as close as the OneBlade
    was able to get
  • 9:04 - 9:06
    with shaving cream,
  • 9:06 - 9:07
do you think it could really compare
  • 9:07 - 9:10
to the Gillette Fusion 5 Proshield Power?
  • 9:11 - 9:12
I'm not sure. Let me try that out.
  • 9:12 - 9:15
    The Proshield Power also has
    its own on button.
  • 9:15 - 9:17
    Again, there's a shaving cream,
    it's very thin.
  • 9:17 - 9:28
    (shaving noises)
  • 9:28 - 9:30
By the way, I've been using
this blade for two weeks too.
  • 9:30 - 9:37
    (shaving noises)
  • 9:37 - 9:41
    This is now shaved
with the Fusion 5 Proshield Power.
  • 9:42 - 9:44
    I don't know how well
the camera is gonna see that.
  • 9:45 - 9:47
It's pretty smooth. It's pretty smooth.
  • 9:47 - 9:49
    This is where the OneBlade.
    It's also pretty smooth.
  • 9:50 - 9:51
If I see the up grain,
  • 9:53 - 9:55
    you can probably hear this
    a little bit of stubble.
  • 9:56 - 9:57
Actually, a little bit of stubble
    there too.
  • 9:57 - 9:59
It's pretty close. I mean really.
  • 10:00 - 10:03
I mean the Fusion 5 Proshield Power
    is insanely expensive.
  • 10:03 - 10:06
I think the refills are about $5 a piece.
  • 10:06 - 10:09
    So, it wouldn't take long
    for the OneBlade to really
  • 10:09 - 10:12
pay for itself as far as
compared to a razor like that.
  • 10:12 - 10:15
So, really over time, this could
    be a better investment.
  • 10:15 - 10:17
One more feature I was going
to point out is they both have
  • 10:17 - 10:20
    trimming combs on them
    with 1mm, 3mm, and 5mm.
  • 10:20 - 10:23
I have the 3mm on both of them.
    I'm gonna do
  • 10:23 - 10:24
a little bit of trimming here
  • 10:25 - 10:26
just to show you how they work.
  • 10:27 - 10:28
First up, the Micro Touch Solo.
  • 10:29 - 10:35
    (shaving noise)
  • 10:35 - 10:36
This is just a regular trimmer comb.
  • 10:36 - 10:38
    (shaving noise)
  • 10:38 - 10:40
A lot of electric razors have these.
  • 10:40 - 10:45
    (shaving noise)
  • 10:45 - 10:46
    So, pretty straightforward.
  • 10:46 - 10:47
    OneBlade similar thing.
  • 10:47 - 10:58
    (shaving noise)
  • 10:58 - 11:01
    Once again, just because
the motor just feels more powerful,
  • 11:01 - 11:03
    I feel like it's a little bit
    more efficient
  • 11:03 - 11:04
    than the Micro Touch Solo.
  • 11:05 - 11:06
    There's nothing wrong
    with the Micro Touch Solo,
  • 11:06 - 11:08
but this one just feels a little bit
    more powerful to me.
  • 11:09 - 11:10
And, when I was just doing this
  • 11:10 - 11:12
trimming, it seemed like it went
    through it a lot faster.
  • 11:13 - 11:15
    Now, I originally gave
    the Micro Touch Solo
  • 11:15 - 11:16
    a pretty good review,
and I stand by that video
  • 11:16 - 11:18
because I still think it's a good product.
  • 11:18 - 11:21
    However, when you compare it
    to the Philips Norelco OneBlade,
  • 11:21 - 11:23
I've got to go with the OneBlade.
  • 11:23 - 11:26
    Mainly because the powerful motor
    and because you can
  • 11:26 - 11:28
use it in the shower or a shaving cream,
  • 11:28 - 11:30
    that seems to be
    a significant difference to me.
  • 11:31 - 11:33
And, the Micro Touch Solo is $10 cheaper,
  • 11:33 - 11:35
and it has a built-in light,
    but it's limited
  • 11:35 - 11:38
    to dry shaving only.
If you only plan to use it
  • 11:38 - 11:41
on dry shaving, this could be
    a good purchase for you.
  • 11:41 - 11:43
I know this is kind of a first look review
    of the OneBlade
  • 11:44 - 11:46
    and also a comparison
    to Micro Touch Solo,
  • 11:46 - 11:49
    but I'll keep using them
to let you know how they hold up
  • 11:49 - 11:49
    over time.
  • 11:50 - 11:51
The thing that I would want
    to see is how long
  • 11:51 - 11:54
    these blades last,
    because the blades are kind
  • 11:54 - 11:56
    of expensive. Right now,
    the blades for the OneBlade,
  • 11:57 - 11:59
    I found a 2-pack for $25.
  • 11:59 - 12:01
I have not seen the replacement blades
  • 12:01 - 12:02
for the Micro Touch Solo in stores yet.
  • 12:03 - 12:05
    But, if it's significantly cheaper,
    that could also be
  • 12:05 - 12:06
a compelling reason to pick this one
  • 12:06 - 12:09
    over the OneBlade.
    Especially, if you're only interested
  • 12:09 - 12:09
    in dry shaving.
  • 12:10 - 12:12
Have you used a Philips OneBlade
    or the Micro Touch Solo
  • 12:12 - 12:14
    or something else like it?
Let me know what you think
  • 12:14 - 12:15
    in the comments below.
