Minecraft Hour of Code: Introduction

Hour of Code Minecraft | Introduction
  • 0:04 - 0:08
Hi, my name is Jens and
    I'm the lead creative designer
  • 0:08 - 0:09
    of Minecraft.
  • 0:09 - 0:13
In the next hour, you'll make your own Minecraft
    game.
  • 0:13 - 0:16
This looks like Minecraft but the world has
    stopped.
  • 0:16 - 0:21
The sheep aren't moving, the chickens aren't
laying eggs, and zombies are just standing
  • 0:21 - 0:22
    still.
  • 0:22 - 0:26
It's up to you to add the code to make the
    Minecraft world work.
  • 0:26 - 0:29
My name is Melissa and I am a user researcher
    at Minecraft.
  • 0:29 - 0:32
(So do you want them to do all that stuff
    forever?
  • 0:32 - 0:33
    Yes.)
  • 0:33 - 0:37
What I'm really interested in is how people
think and interact with technology and so
  • 0:37 - 0:42
this job is the perfect job for me to put
together the computer engineering with the
  • 0:42 - 0:45
psychology: how people think and behave.
  • 0:45 - 0:48
You'll see your screen is split into three
    main parts.
  • 0:48 - 0:52
    1) On the left is the Minecraft game.
  • 0:52 - 0:56
Right now the world is frozen but we're going
    to fix that with code.
  • 0:56 - 0:58
    2) This middle area is the toolbox.
  • 0:58 - 1:05
Each of these blocks is a command that chickens,
sheep, and other Minecraft creatures can understand.
  • 1:05 - 1:12
    3) The space on the right is called the workspace
and this is where we'll build our program.
  • 1:12 - 1:17
If you forget what to do, the instructions
for each level are at the top.
  • 1:17 - 1:20
To start off, we're going to program a chicken.
  • 1:20 - 1:24
Let's drag the "move forward" command to the
    workspace.
  • 1:24 - 1:28
When I hit "Run" the chicken moves forward
    one step.
  • 1:28 - 1:34
To go further, I'll drag another "move forward"
block underneath the first "move forward"
  • 1:34 - 1:36
    block until the highlight appears.
  • 1:36 - 1:40
Then I'll drop it and the two blocks snap
    together.
  • 1:40 - 1:44
If I hit "Run" again, the chicken walks two
    steps.
  • 1:44 - 1:49
If you ever want to delete a block, just remove
it from the stack and drag it back to the
  • 1:49 - 1:50
    toolbox.
  • 1:50 - 1:56
After you've hit "Run" you can always hit
the "Reset" button to reset the game and start
  • 1:56 - 1:57
    over.
  • 1:57 - 2:02
Now, it's your turn to make your very own
    version of Minecraft.
  • 2:02 - 2:03
    Have fun!
