How to deal with anger and despair as an activist?

  • 0:02 - 0:03

  • 0:10 - 0:16
    (Bell)
  • 0:32 - 0:35
Dear Thay, my name is Bob.
  • 0:35 - 0:38
    I live in Los Angeles.
  • 0:39 - 0:44
I'd like to talk to you
about the nutrients you spoke of.
  • 0:44 - 0:48
    In particular, a nutrient
that I thought you left out,
  • 0:48 - 0:51
and that was air as a nutrient.
  • 0:53 - 0:57
In the travels that you have done
    throughout the world
  • 0:57 - 0:59
perhaps you have looked at the skies
  • 0:59 - 1:03
and you may have seen a spraying
  • 1:03 - 1:06
    that is coming
    from high altitude aircrafts.
  • 1:06 - 1:09
    White lines that are criss-crossing
    even over cities.
  • 1:09 - 1:12
They are all over Los Angeles.
  • 1:13 - 1:18
    These chemtrails spread,
    they become artificial clouds.
  • 1:18 - 1:21
    There is an overcast
    that happens in Los Angeles
  • 1:22 - 1:25
and we are getting less sunshine
    that we normally have had.
  • 1:27 - 1:30
    What disturbs me is that
    there has been independent scientists,
  • 1:30 - 1:32
    with integrity,
  • 1:32 - 1:36
    that have taken samples
of this spraying, of this residue,
  • 1:37 - 1:42
    and they have found aluminum,
    barium and these are toxins,
  • 1:42 - 1:45
    toxins to our health.
  • 1:45 - 1:48
    We are consuming this air,
  • 1:49 - 1:52
    this is very dangerous.
  • 1:53 - 1:56
    My personal concern is
    that I have two fears.
  • 1:56 - 1:59
One is that I am very frightened by it,
  • 1:59 - 2:01
    because it means
    that my health is threatened,
  • 2:01 - 2:04
my loved ones' health is threatened
  • 2:04 - 2:07
    if we are ingesting
    this kind of toxic air.
  • 2:07 - 2:11
    Also I am angry,
  • 2:11 - 2:14
I am angry that nothing is being done.
  • 2:15 - 2:17
    The mediums say nothing.
  • 2:17 - 2:19
    Politicians, senators
    are saying nothing about it
  • 2:19 - 2:24
    or they are denying that
something is going on with our skies.
  • 2:25 - 2:32
I have to cope with these two fears
or two feelings in me daily.
  • 2:32 - 2:37
I am involved with a group in Los Angeles
    to try to change it.
  • 2:37 - 2:41
    But we are getting nowhere
    because there is mostly silence.
  • 2:42 - 2:43
    I'm asking you:
  • 2:44 - 2:46
What can I do as an activist in this area
  • 2:46 - 2:51
    to cope with these feelings
of anger and fear that I carry?
  • 2:54 - 2:59
    Anger and despair
    are two kinds of pollution.
  • 2:59 - 3:01
    Pollution.
  • 3:02 - 3:04
I wish it was only that.
  • 3:05 - 3:07
    The internal pollution.
  • 3:07 - 3:12
If you have hate, anger, fear, despair
  • 3:13 - 3:15
    there is pollution inside
  • 3:15 - 3:17
    and that will not help
  • 3:18 - 3:23
    to reduce the pollution outside.
  • 3:25 - 3:30
People have their idea of happiness.
  • 3:33 - 3:38
    They believe that
without a lot of money, power,
  • 3:40 - 3:43
    they cannot be really happy.
  • 3:46 - 3:53
    People believe that
happiness is the capacity of consuming.
  • 3:54 - 3:56
When you have a lot of money
    you consume a lot
  • 3:57 - 3:58
    and you are happy.
  • 3:58 - 4:03
    So these notions of happiness
    are very dangerous.
  • 4:04 - 4:08
    Because we are destroying
    ourselves and the world
  • 4:08 - 4:15
    by that kind of notion,
    idea about happiness.
  • 4:16 - 4:21
    So the education system,
there is something wrong in it.
  • 4:21 - 4:24
We do not teach ourselves and our children
  • 4:24 - 4:28
    how to experience true happiness.
  • 4:33 - 4:42
So if you want to be a true activist,
  • 4:43 - 4:47
first of all you have to
live your life in such a way
  • 4:48 - 4:52
    that can set an example
    to the people around.
  • 4:52 - 4:55
    Your life becomes your message.
  • 4:56 - 5:02
With that kind of living example
you can influence other people around you.
  • 5:03 - 5:10
If you write a letter of protest,
if you speak with anger or fear,
  • 5:11 - 5:15
that will not help your cause.
  • 5:15 - 5:17
    That is why
  • 5:18 - 5:25
look deeply and see the people who
are victims of their notions of happiness,
  • 5:26 - 5:30
    their wrong views about happiness,
  • 5:30 - 5:34
their way of life that destroys
    themselves and the ecosystem.
  • 5:34 - 5:38
    You see that they are
    the object of your compassion.
  • 5:38 - 5:41
You are not angry at them anymore.
  • 5:41 - 5:43
And you try to help them.
  • 5:43 - 5:53
To write an angry letter of protest is not
as effective as to write a love letter.
  • 5:54 - 5:57
    Because when you are able
    to write a love letter
  • 5:57 - 6:02
    you touch the best thing
in the politician, in the leader.
  • 6:04 - 6:07
    You may wake them up
  • 6:07 - 6:11
and the may change their course,
    their idea of happiness.
  • 6:11 - 6:19
So we need a community, a Sangha,
  • 6:20 - 6:23
in order to be able to do something.
  • 6:23 - 6:28
    Alone, even if you are
    a very talented person
  • 6:29 - 6:31
    you cannot do much.
  • 6:31 - 6:35
Even a Buddha without a Sangha
    cannot do much.
  • 6:35 - 6:39
    So as an activist,
if you want to change the world
  • 6:39 - 6:41
    you need a Sangha,
  • 6:41 - 6:44
    you need people
who have the same kind of insight,
  • 6:44 - 6:46
    the same kind of purpose,
  • 6:46 - 6:48
    the same kind of motivation,
  • 6:49 - 6:51
the same capacity to live a life
  • 6:52 - 6:58
that can be an example for the world.
  • 6:59 - 7:03
    With such a Sangha
you will be able to do something
  • 7:03 - 7:05
    to change.
  • 7:05 - 7:07
    Otherwise,
  • 7:08 - 7:14
we cannot find a way out of the situation.
  • 7:14 - 7:16
    That is why, for me,
  • 7:17 - 7:21
    to practice mindful living,
    to build a Sangha
  • 7:21 - 7:26
so that you have a collective
    energy supporting you
  • 7:26 - 7:32
gives you a means to promote your insight
  • 7:33 - 7:37
    and offer to the people
    the way out,
  • 7:37 - 7:44
save the planet and our own species.
  • 7:46 - 7:48

  • 7:51 - 7:57
