Subtracting Decimals

  • 0:01 - 0:07
We need to calculate 9.005 minus
3.6, or we could view it
  • 0:07 - 0:13
    as 9 and 5 thousandths
    minus 3 and 6 tenths.
  • 0:13 - 0:16
    Whenever you do a subtracting
    decimals problem, the most
  • 0:16 - 0:18
    important thing, and this is
true when you're adding decimals as well,
  • 0:18 - 0:21
    is you have
    to line up the decimals.
  • 0:21 - 0:32
So this is 9.005 minus 3.6.
  • 0:32 - 0:35
So we've lined up the decimals,
    and now we're ready
  • 0:35 - 0:37
    to subtract.
  • 0:37 - 0:39
    Now we can subtract.
  • 0:39 - 0:40
    So we start up here.
  • 0:40 - 0:42
    We have 5 minus nothing.
  • 0:42 - 0:45
You can imagine this 3.6, or
this 3 and 6 tenths. We could
  • 0:45 - 0:48
add two zeroes right here, and
it would be the same thing as
  • 0:48 - 0:53
3 and 600 thousandths, which is
the same thing as 6 tenths.
  • 0:53 - 0:54
And when you look at it that
    way, you'd say, OK, 5 minus 0
  • 0:54 - 0:57
    is nothing, and you just
    write a 5 right there.
  • 0:57 - 0:59
Or you could have said, if
    there's nothing there, it
  • 0:59 - 1:01
    would have been 5 minus
    nothing is 5.
  • 1:01 - 1:04
    Then you have 0 minus
    0, which is just 0.
  • 1:04 - 1:08
And then you have a 0 minus 6.
  • 1:08 - 1:10
    And you can't subtract
    6 from 0.
  • 1:10 - 1:13
So we need to get something into
    this space right here,
  • 1:13 - 1:15
    and what we essentially are
    going to do is regroup.
  • 1:15 - 1:21
We're going to take one 1 from
the 9, so let's do that.
  • 1:21 - 1:25
So let's take one 1 from the
9, so it becomes an 8.
  • 1:25 - 1:27
And we need to do something
    with that one 1.
  • 1:27 - 1:29
    We're going to put it
    in the tenths place.
  • 1:29 - 1:33
    Now remember, one whole
    is equal to 10 tenths.
  • 1:33 - 1:34
    This is the tenths place.
  • 1:34 - 1:37
So then this will become 10.
  • 1:37 - 1:39
    Sometimes it's taught that
    you're borrowing the 1, but
  • 1:39 - 1:41
    you're really taking it, and
    you're actually taking 10 from
  • 1:41 - 1:44
    the place to your left.
  • 1:44 - 1:47
So one whole is 10 tenths, we're
    in the tenths place.
  • 1:47 - 1:50
So you have 10 minus 6.
  • 1:50 - 1:51
    Let me switch colors.
  • 1:51 - 1:53
    10 minus 6 is 4.
  • 1:53 - 1:56
    You have your decimal right
there, and then you have 8
  • 1:56 - 1:59
    minus 3 is 5.
  • 1:59 - 2:03
    So 9.005 minus 3.6 is 5.405.
