Ghulam Ishaq Khan Institute, Khitab - Javed Ahmed Ghamidi

  • 0:07 - 0:11
Keynote Address at Ghulam Ishaq Khan
    University, Javed Ahmed Ghamidi.
  • 0:15 - 0:22
    [Javed Ahmed Ghamidi] Gratitude is
only for God, Lord of the World.
  • 0:22 - 0:27
And Peace and blessings upon his
    trustworthy Prophet, Muhammad
  • 0:27 - 0:31
I seek refuge with Allah from the accursed
    Satan.
  • 0:31 - 0:34
In the name of Allah, most Gracious,
    ever Merciful.
  • 0:34 - 0:45
    Ladies and Gentlemen,
I am a student, was born a student,
  • 0:45 - 0:50
    spent my whole life
    in academic pursuits.
  • 0:50 - 0:55
It will be the greatest honor for me
  • 0:55 - 0:58
    for people to say even
after I am gone from this world
  • 0:58 - 1:02
that he spent his life in the spirit
of a true student of knowledge.
  • 1:02 - 1:07
and departed in that very state, as well.
  • 1:07 - 1:12
It is a fine gesture of the
    students, teachers,
  • 1:12 - 1:16
    and the administration
    of your University that
  • 1:16 - 1:21
    they have given such
    honor to this student.
  • 1:21 - 1:25
I am thankful to you from
the core of my heart, otherwise
  • 1:25 - 1:28
    'Man Aanam Ke Man Daanam',
(Otherwise I know very well where I stand)
  • 1:28 - 1:32
    Ladies and Gentlemen
    the greatest of the honors
  • 1:32 - 1:42
and satisfaction for human beings lies
in his seeking the truth in this world.
  • 1:42 - 1:50
The quest for truth and truthfulness
is the goal of a human being.
  • 1:52 - 1:57
He has been sent to Earth
    primarily for this reason.
  • 1:57 - 2:03
What we call the 'knowledge of the
    Divine Being'
  • 2:03 - 2:07
    that actually is the pinnacle
    of the Truth.
  • 2:07 - 2:14
If we study the Sciences that
    have developed in the world,
  • 2:14 - 2:17
then even though they may be only
    from the branches of knowledge,
  • 2:17 - 2:21
    however, they are an outcome
    of the search for truth.
  • 2:21 - 2:25
    The 'Fitrah' (Human Nature)
of human beings has been ingrained
  • 2:25 - 2:28
with an affinity for truth and has
    been sent to this world.
  • 2:28 - 2:35
    However, when we begin
the quest for truth in the world,
  • 2:35 - 2:40
then prior to it a tradition
    has already taken root.
  • 2:40 - 2:46
    This tradition is being forming
    in the modern sciences,
  • 2:46 - 2:50
    it used to be formed
    in the ancient sciences,
  • 2:50 - 2:55
it has formed in the Social Sciences,
and it has developed in pure Sciences too,
  • 2:55 - 3:00
    and it happens in the
    theological sciences as well.
  • 3:00 - 3:08
When such a tradition is formed then
a lot of biases get associated with it.
  • 3:08 - 3:13
    If this tradition has started
    to form in Greece,
  • 3:13 - 3:19
although at the beginning of history,
Socrates had made a huge sacrifice for it.
  • 3:19 - 3:23
    However, a tradition is,
    after all, a tradition,
  • 3:23 - 3:29
    and it compulsorily associates people
with itself, along with all its prejudices
  • 3:29 - 3:33
    even though it might be
    a tradition of Philosophy.
  • 3:33 - 3:40
If we study the traditions of Science,
then there too we see this history that
  • 3:40 - 3:44
    the things that
    have been discovered,
  • 3:44 - 3:48
in their light, the concept that
has been formed for the universe,
  • 3:48 - 3:58
or of the human beings, that was turned
into Deen or religion by the people.
  • 3:58 - 4:02
    That which I am calling
    as Deen or the religion,
  • 4:02 - 4:07
if we perceive in its pure form,
then there too it is the same story.
  • 4:07 - 4:10
    When the Prophets initiate it,
  • 4:10 - 4:16
then we are aware that in the
    modern history of religion,
  • 4:16 - 4:20
    the huge sacrifice that had
been given by Syedna Isa A.S.
  • 4:20 - 4:27
However, in spite of it, when
    people understood his guidance,
  • 4:27 - 4:31
    and presented their Dawah
    in accordance with it,
  • 4:31 - 4:37
made it the real goal of their life, then
this tradition took hold there as well,
  • 4:37 - 4:42
    and now we see
    billions of people
  • 4:42 - 4:46
    who are associated
    with this tradition.
  • 4:46 - 4:52
    Muhammadur Rasoolalllah (pbuh)
was the last Messenger of God,
  • 4:52 - 4:55
he presented the Dawah of Deen,
  • 4:55 - 4:58
and a tradition of its understanding
    was established as well.
  • 4:58 - 4:59
    And it is that tradition
  • 4:59 - 5:03
    which has taken the form
    of our great elders
  • 5:03 - 5:12
    and our scholarly forebears have
become our past and our legacy.
  • 5:12 - 5:16
    This tradition connects
    itself
  • 5:16 - 5:19
with the Fitrah of a human being,
    to the extent that
  • 5:19 - 5:23
he begins to speak even in opposition
    to the Messengers of Allah
  • 5:23 - 5:29
as to "What are you saying"?
    "Ma Anfaina Alaiha Abaa'ana",
  • 5:29 - 5:33
The practices which we have found
    our fathers to be following,
  • 5:33 - 5:37
how can we leave those practices,
    just because you say so?
  • 5:37 - 5:40
    We find this expression
in Sciences, in the same tone,
  • 5:40 - 5:45
and is spoken with full emphasis
in the Social Sciences as well.
  • 5:45 - 5:49
    And in the Religious Sciences
it reaches such a peak that
  • 5:49 - 5:51
    a deviation from it,
  • 5:51 - 5:56
    is considered equivalent
to a deviation from the religion.
  • 5:56 - 6:01
    This backdrop creates for
    the seekers of truth
  • 6:01 - 6:04
    a lot of difficulties.
  • 6:04 - 6:09
    i.e. if they get connected
    with that tradition,
  • 6:09 - 6:13
    they have at hand respect,
    esteem, and status.
  • 6:13 - 6:21
    People will admire them greatly.
They would be garlanded and praised.
  • 6:21 - 6:24
    They would be elevated to
    the position of leaders,
  • 6:24 - 6:28
however, if they make seeking the truth
    as their objective,
  • 6:28 - 6:32
    and be courageous enough
    to criticize this tradition
  • 6:32 - 6:38
then it is not easy for them to
    tolerate this kind of work.
  • 6:38 - 6:41
    This is the reason that
    whenever a person
  • 6:41 - 6:46
    has had the courage
    to go against the tradition,
  • 6:46 - 6:52
    whether he is Socrates,
or the Father of Modern Sciences, Galileo,
  • 6:52 - 6:57
    whether he is the Messenger
    of God, Isa A.S.
  • 6:57 - 7:01
    he will have to pay
    a heavy price for it.
  • 7:01 - 7:05
    The tradition seeks this price.
  • 7:05 - 7:10
    And every other person has
to pay this price for the truth,
  • 7:10 - 7:17
who dares to challenge the traditions
in the capacity of a true seeker of truth.
  • 7:17 - 7:22
    To challenge the tradition
is in reality a stepping stone
  • 7:22 - 7:24
    for the development of knowledge.
  • 7:24 - 7:27
    No Science can develop further
  • 7:27 - 7:32
    if the door for criticism
and review has been shut for it.
  • 7:32 - 7:36
    Ideally, the tradition should
    never have had the opportunity
  • 7:36 - 7:39
    to be established with
    such a strong foothold,
  • 7:39 - 7:43
    rather it should always
be open to review and criticism.
  • 7:43 - 7:47
    However, the matter with
    human beings is that
  • 7:47 - 7:51
    since they have to make
    their systems
  • 7:51 - 7:56
based on the outcome of knowledge,
    whether it is the social,
  • 7:56 - 8:00
    political, or economic system,
  • 8:00 - 8:03
    they wish to give shape
    to this tradition
  • 8:03 - 8:07
    so that they get strengthened
    to their utmost
  • 8:07 - 8:09
and be a part of their existence.
  • 8:09 - 8:15
    Among us the term 'Taqleed'
    has been used for it,
  • 8:15 - 8:19
    and its objective was this
    as well that the traditions
  • 8:19 - 8:21
    should be kept strengthened
    to such a degree
  • 8:21 - 8:27
where it can play its role in the
    consolidation of the society.
  • 8:27 - 8:31
    Keeping this as the objective
    when we note that
  • 8:31 - 8:35
    the tradition has taken
    its root so firmly,
  • 8:35 - 8:38
    has something else too
    become associated with it?
  • 8:38 - 8:42
    So we see that
    organizations are formed,
  • 8:42 - 8:45
    their vested interests
    get associated as well.
  • 8:45 - 8:50
    Respect, power, and fame
    become a part of it,
  • 8:50 - 8:52
    hence the moment
    when a person
  • 8:52 - 8:56
    in the capacity of
    a sincere seeker of truth
  • 8:56 - 8:58
    dares to challenge that
    tradition in any degree
  • 8:58 - 9:00
be it in part or in principle,
  • 9:00 - 9:05
    dares to challenge that tradition
then there is a severe reaction to it.
  • 9:05 - 9:11
According to me, if we study the
history of knowledge of this world,
  • 9:11 - 9:14
    then in Philosophy,
    Science and Religion,
  • 9:14 - 9:19
    everywhere when it has been
    challenged exceptionally,
  • 9:19 - 9:22
    then the reaction has
    been of a similar nature.
  • 9:22 - 9:25
    The tradition of religion
    among the Bani Israel that
  • 9:25 - 9:30
    had formed in more
    or less 2000 years,
  • 9:30 - 9:33
    when it was challenged
    by Syedna Isa A.S.
  • 9:33 - 9:38
then the reaction had been in the
form of a great tragedy in History.
  • 9:38 - 9:41
I have given the reference of
    Science just now,
  • 9:41 - 9:44
Socrates was made to drink from the
    poisoned bowl,
  • 9:44 - 9:48
    the history of knowledge
    can never forget this.
  • 9:48 - 9:53
    Review and criticism is the
    stepping stone to move ahead.
  • 9:53 - 9:58
This only gives birth to knowledge
    and this only nurtures it,
  • 9:58 - 10:02
and this only leads it to the
    journey towards perfection.
  • 10:02 - 10:06
    However, for review and criticism
    it is indispensable that
  • 10:06 - 10:11
some aspect or the other of
the tradition is made the target by us.
  • 10:11 - 10:16
And when it is made the target then
    the reaction would come forth,
  • 10:16 - 10:20
and as I said, that this
    reaction can emanate
  • 10:20 - 10:24
    from sentiments,
    from vested interests,
  • 10:24 - 10:26
it may be sourced in the
    prejudices as well.
  • 10:26 - 10:31
    And when the power and
    authority gets associated with it,
  • 10:31 - 10:36
be it at the social or political level,
    it comes from there too.
  • 10:36 - 10:42
Therefore it is necessary, that those
who are the true seekers of the reality,
  • 10:42 - 10:45
    they should well understand
    this from day one that
  • 10:45 - 10:48
    if they have to embark
    upon this journey,
  • 10:48 - 10:52
    then review and criticism
    are indispensable for it.
  • 10:52 - 10:55
    And whenever there would
    be criticism,
  • 10:55 - 10:58
    then the reaction would
    be indispensable as well.
  • 10:58 - 11:03
    And this reaction can be
of any level and at any place.
  • 11:03 - 11:10
Therefore, this truth, if it really
becomes a thing which we aim for,
  • 11:10 - 11:17
the focus of all our love, and all among
us become a seeker of it,
  • 11:17 - 11:20
    it becomes our target
    and our goal,
  • 11:20 - 11:25
    then we should be aware
at the very first step that
  • 11:25 - 11:30
we have to pay the price for it.
In case of the religious issues,
  • 11:30 - 11:34
    this price becomes heftier.
  • 11:34 - 11:38
At times in it, not merely
    life and property
  • 11:38 - 11:45
    even one's public reputation
    becomes difficult to be maintained.
  • 11:45 - 11:51
    The tradition of knowledge
among us, if we reflect on it,
  • 11:51 - 11:57
then with the mingling of philosophy,
    Mysticism and Metaphysics,
  • 11:57 - 12:02
    the great personalities that have
    been born in the subcontinent,
  • 12:02 - 12:06
among them, the position of Alama Iqbal
    is par excellence.
  • 12:06 - 12:15
You see, his poetry was admired.
    People drew inspiration from it.
  • 12:15 - 12:17
He was declared the iconic voice
    of the Muslim nation.
  • 12:17 - 12:20
    The greatest of the
    Ulema had praise for him.
  • 12:20 - 12:24
    They do it even now
    and read his couplets.
  • 12:24 - 12:28
You may guess from the fact that the
last light of the house of knowledge,
  • 12:28 - 12:34
in the words of Iqbal itself, i.e.
    Syed Sulaiman Nadwi,
  • 12:34 - 12:36
    how he had lauded him?
  • 12:36 - 12:38
    His illustrious pupil
  • 12:38 - 12:44
Abul Hasan Ali Nadwi wrote a book
such as Rawa-e Iqbal on him.
  • 12:44 - 12:50
    However, that book of his
    and those sermons of his,
  • 12:50 - 12:54
    where this tradition has been
    challenged, which we know as
  • 12:54 - 12:58
    "Reconstruction of Religious Thought
    in Islam",
  • 12:58 - 13:01
    that had never been found
    worthy of any praise
  • 13:01 - 13:09
    from these elders and champions.
Rather if we study it rigorously,
  • 13:09 - 13:15
then they are of the opinion
that every person commits some sins
  • 13:15 - 13:18
so it is a sin among his sins.
  • 13:18 - 13:25
    If we look at 'Reconstruction'
in the backdrop of the history of Muslims,
  • 13:25 - 13:30
    then irrespective of what
    he has stated in it,
  • 13:30 - 13:34
I too have objections from a
    thousand aspects of his statements,
  • 13:34 - 13:38
    however, the point that
    the religious knowledge of Muslims,
  • 13:38 - 13:42
i.e. I hereby repeat, not the religion,
but the knowledge tradition of religion
  • 13:42 - 13:45
    which needs reconstruction
    and reformation,
  • 13:45 - 13:51
this was in fact that truth
for which he raised the beacon.
  • 13:51 - 13:55
And this title was self-explanatory as
to what he had wished to state?
  • 13:55 - 13:59
If you permit me then I would say,
  • 13:59 - 14:04
that the biggest need of the
    Muslims in the modern times,
  • 14:04 - 14:08
which had been pointed in those
times by the greatest of our men,
  • 14:08 - 14:10
    however, I had said that
  • 14:10 - 14:14
    the reaction for the tradition
    here too was the same,
  • 14:14 - 14:18
    which we have been
    seeing and reading in history.
  • 14:18 - 14:20
You are the students, among you
    are the teachers,
  • 14:20 - 14:22
    those people are among you
  • 14:22 - 14:24
    who dedicate their lives
    for knowledge and Truth,
  • 14:24 - 14:30
I request them all that they should
always keep this basic reality in focus.
  • 14:30 - 14:33
If this is to be decided that
  • 14:33 - 14:36
    'Tu Bazamana Be Saaz'
  • 14:36 - 14:40
    then there is no risk.
Then in the midst of the tradition
  • 14:40 - 14:44
    whatever we will pronounce
    in favor of the tradition,
  • 14:44 - 14:48
for that, there will only be accolades.
However, be it the tradition of Science,
  • 14:48 - 14:51
    or that of Philosophy,
    or of the religious knowledge,
  • 14:51 - 14:54
    whenever we will challenge it,
  • 14:54 - 14:58
and stand up to clear the
    path of review and criticism,
  • 14:58 - 15:02
not only will it have a reaction, but the
reaction will also be severest possible.
  • 15:02 - 15:06
I have in my life tread
    across all these paths,
  • 15:06 - 15:10
    and I am quite aware
of its each and every stage.
  • 15:10 - 15:15
I will tell you about my beginning.
  • 15:15 - 15:20
    That beginning had been in
    the mystical interpretation of Deen.
  • 15:20 - 15:24
    My father had been the
    upholders of this very interpretation.
  • 15:24 - 15:30
    When I studied this interpretation
from a critical point of view,
  • 15:30 - 15:37
then it became clear to me that
I have to go further and not stop here.
  • 15:37 - 15:40
    Then when I reached the
    age of maturity, then
  • 15:40 - 15:46
the most which any school attracted me
was the political interpretation of Deen.
  • 15:46 - 15:50
    I have spent a good
part of my life in it.
  • 15:50 - 15:54
    However, when its shortcomings
    started to dawn upon me,
  • 15:54 - 16:00
then I realized that there isn't
any scope for me to stop even here.
  • 16:00 - 16:05
Presently, the way I perceive Deen, and
the way I analyze the facts,
  • 16:05 - 16:08
    whatever thought of
    mine has come forth,
  • 16:08 - 16:15
here I had to shed away the influence of
first stopover as well as the second one.
  • 16:15 - 16:21
And I tell you that the summary
of my whole life had been
  • 16:21 - 16:24
    "Who comes along as
a friend in the path of Love"
  • 16:24 - 16:28
"That which remained as a friend
    was merely a yearning".
  • 16:28 - 16:31
If you will adopt this path as well,
  • 16:31 - 16:35
    then only your yearning will
    remain (unfulfilled) with you.
  • 16:35 - 16:39
    However, there is nothing
    greater than this ardent wish
  • 16:39 - 16:45
    which provides a celestial existence
    to the human personality.
  • 16:45 - 16:50
This ardent wish is the one, that
    imparts purity to his conscience.
  • 16:50 - 16:54
This is the wish that infuses in him
    the encouragement and stimulation.
  • 16:54 - 16:58
And if this wish is nurtured
    and given shape then
  • 16:58 - 17:01
    it will provide an
    access to the Heavens.
  • 17:01 - 17:04
    The peaks of the Himalayas
    would be conquered.
  • 17:04 - 17:07
    The greatest of the
    battles can be won.
  • 17:07 - 17:11
    That world can be
    brought into existence
  • 17:11 - 17:16
which may lead the human beings into a
newer world in both thought and action.
  • 17:16 - 17:21
    Do remember that the so
    called 'New Thoughts'
  • 17:21 - 17:28
those are nurtured in the way that
some servants of God decide that
  • 17:28 - 17:32
    they would seek the Truth
and in their quest for the Truth
  • 17:32 - 17:35
whatever price they have to pay
  • 17:35 - 17:40
    they would pay it without
    any reservation or hesitation.
  • 17:40 - 17:42
    This price has been paid
    by me too,
  • 17:42 - 17:46
and I am telling you that
in the whole of human history
  • 17:46 - 17:51
    whoever has chosen this path,
had to compulsorily pay for it.
  • 17:51 - 17:57
    Each one from among you
should be a true seeker of truth,
  • 17:57 - 18:01
    should decide to tread
    on this path.
  • 18:01 - 18:03
Whether it is about a part or the
    whole,
  • 18:03 - 18:05
or is be about the principles,
  • 18:05 - 18:10
be it in Science, or with
regard to Social or Religious Science,
  • 18:10 - 18:13
this is in fact the way to proceed.
  • 18:13 - 18:18
When this path is chosen then
    humanity marches ahead.
  • 18:18 - 18:24
A human being reaches for a
    lofty goal for Humankind,
  • 18:24 - 18:28
And a human being steps out
    from inside that Human-being
  • 18:28 - 18:32
    for which the great Philosophers
  • 18:32 - 18:37
    and Sages have dreamed
    for their appearance.
  • 18:37 - 18:42
And for this has evolved the
    great Philosophies and Literature.
  • 18:42 - 18:44
    I am telling you that
  • 18:44 - 18:47
whenever you adopt such a course
  • 18:47 - 18:50
    then do it with
    courage and motivation.
  • 18:50 - 18:58
    There will come various situations
and at times such stages will appear,
  • 18:58 - 19:02
    which just by imagining them,
make our hair stand on ends.
  • 19:02 - 19:07
    However, if the determination is
maintained then peace shall shower down
  • 19:07 - 19:10
The Support of the Lord of this
    Universe will be felt,
  • 19:10 - 19:14
    His grace would be attained,
  • 19:14 - 19:18
and when we will move ahead with
    inspiration and courage,
  • 19:18 - 19:22
then we will see that the paths
    will smoothen out themselves,
  • 19:22 - 19:26
    and those conditions when
    we had begun,
  • 19:26 - 19:30
and if not even a single person
    had come along with you.
  • 19:30 - 19:33
then not much time would pass
    when the caravans would form
  • 19:33 - 19:38
and a whole world would be
ready to tread along with you.
  • 19:38 - 19:46
This is in reality the field of that
    struggle, that endeavor,
  • 19:46 - 19:49
    where when people
    get into it,
  • 19:49 - 19:53
at times it does happen that the
    thorns on the path
  • 19:53 - 19:57
are to be watered with one's
    with blood, however,
  • 19:57 - 20:01
    the law of gardening
    is written only like this
  • 20:01 - 20:08
"Ghashtaim Har Sare Khare Ba Khoone Dil
    Qanune Baghbaani-e Sahra Navishtam".
  • 20:08 - 20:10
    These were some thoughts
  • 20:10 - 20:13
which I had wished to present
in your service on this occasion.
  • 20:13 - 20:20
I thank you once again for
    honoring this student,
  • 20:20 - 20:24
    though he does not
    deserve any of these.
  • 20:24 - 20:31
A student, who was born a student,
spent his lifetime in scholarly quests,
  • 20:31 - 20:33
    and the same point which
I had said at the start,
  • 20:33 - 20:36
    would wish to depart this
    world in the same status.
  • 20:36 - 20:42
    "Aqulu Qauli Haza Wastaghfirullaha
Li Wa Lakum Wa Li Sairil Muslimeen".
