I am Jonathan Bustillos Osornio [br](Jathan) also[br] 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 I am a Debian contributor and a Debian[br]user since 2008 and I have been helping 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 on some teams like po-debconf templates,[br]translations in the Debian Spanish 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 Translation Team since 2011 and on Debian[br]Reproducible Builds in 2017 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 In Cuba there is a community of Free Software[br]users and developers who have been working 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 on different activities and useful[br]developments to extend the use of Debian 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 and other Free Software projects [br]throughout the country 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 The first group that we have is the GUTL[br]The Free Tecnologies Users Group, in 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 Spanish - Grupo de Usuarios de Tecnologias[br]Libres, is an organisation in Cuba since 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 the development of the GNU/Linux users[br]communities of the whole country. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 It pushes the usage of free technologies[br]organizing events, workshops, courses and 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 many more activities of social impact with[br]Free Software. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 Some of this events are like the Free[br]Document Day related with Libreoffice 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 And this are the pictures of the events,[br]also the FLISol the Latin American 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 Festival Free Software Instalation 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 Also recreation activities 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 GUTL has a website in each they publish[br]many articles or news related with Debian 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 and another Free Software projects. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 The GUTL was born in 2009 and since then[br]it has been one of the most influencial 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 organisations in Cuba to learn, use and[br]share Free Software, hardware and knowledge 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 The main work objectives of this [br]organisation are technological sovereignty 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 Social Comptroller, socialization of[br]Information, Project development 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 International visibility for Cuba in the[br]field for free software and free 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 Technologies. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 Now we will know about free software [br]projects and it's achievements 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 The GUTL group has created a repository [br]called REPOGUTL which is an implementation 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 of something called the Cuban Sourceforge,[br]by their developers and users 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 where free software developers have the [br]opportunity to publicize their creations 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 and get feedback, promoting the migration[br]and use of Free Software to Cuban users. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 This is the system which you could[br]find in the website 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 the repository generated with Cuban free[br]software called Alfidi is structured in two 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 major categories, these are applications[br]and products, with subcategories under them 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 and they include the title of the application,[br]the author, contacts if it is desired by the 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 creator, size, a brief description and a[br]long description in addition to the 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 instructions for installation. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 These are the main developers of REPOGUTL[br]and maintainers, Maikel Enrique Pernia Matos 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 And Delio Orozco González. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 Also we have a free software project called[br]MISOX 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 Misox is of set of Free Software[br]applications developed by Maikel Pernía 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 Matos , Delio Orozco González and[br]Alberto Miguel Nuevo Rojo in the 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 province of Manzanillo Granma in Cuba, [br]under the GNU GPL license and also 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 packaged as .deb for our debian distribution[br]with the purpose of helping computer users 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 to create a customization of Debian [br]GNU/Linux adjusting it to their necessities 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 since an easy and well integrated [br]environment. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 These are some screenshots of the program,[br]it's main purpose is to facilitate some 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 computer users customization of debian[br]GNU/Linux operating system and to put 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 the packages the users want, to set the[br]graphical interface like Gnome, Kde [???] 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 like Fluxbox, Awesome, I3 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 And also it offers the possibility to add[br]individual debian packages from an 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 external source. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 There is another project called VideoMorph[br]which is a is a GUI wrapper for ffmpeg,[br] 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 based on code from python-video-converter[br]and presets idea from QWinFF and FF Multi 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 Converter, developed by Ozkar L. Garcell, [br]Leodanis Pozo Ramos and Leonel Salazar 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 Videaux in Holguín, Cuba. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 And this is the screenshot. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 The mais goal of VideoMorph is to focus[br]is a single purpose making video conversion 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 simple with an easy to use GUI and allowing[br]the user to convert to the currently most 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 popular video formats. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 These are the colleagues that are working[br]on the group of GUTL in Holguín. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 And they also organize activities to talk[br]about some free software community 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 or present some program to their users.[br]And they have also created a website 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 called Debian GNU/Linux in Holguín, [br]that is Debian Hlg, and in this website 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 they publish news related to Debian,[br]events that are organized in this part 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 of the far east of Cuba in Holguín, and [br]it's a very nice way to stay in contact 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 with the local users. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 Some achievements of the GUTL is[br][???] is one of the most actives communities 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 in Cuba, because they are a lot of members,[br]and they have the support of the university 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 of Holguín, for some activities.[br]We have also an official member of the 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 document foundation, Carlos Parra Zaldivar[br]and he's working with libreoffice community 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 directly. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 Also there are four free software active[br]developers, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 there are two programs in development, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 and two active repositories in GitHub. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 Beside this it would have three websites[br]with international visibility like Debian 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 in Holguín, and Python Scouts and [br]Libreoffice cubava 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 Sometimes the Holguín free software[br]community has a space to talk about free 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 technologies at a TV program of Cuba called[br]"A Buen Tiempo", there is something like 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 [???] time. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 By the other hand we have a lot of activity[br]in Granma province, that is also in the East 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 of Cuba 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 This is the place in which more Free[br]Software projects have been developed[br] 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 in island, also REPOGUTL was hosted here,[br]until some months ago, because now the 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 organization was supporting the group[br]it is not [???] anymore, to give the hosting 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 because of institutional restrictions. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 Many programs in development,[br]also there are one GUTL website editor,[br] 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 and there is a free software active[br]developer. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 In Santiago de Cuba also we have a [br]GUTL website editor, and they have created 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 a blog called SWL-X, that is a a web blog[br]related to free software activities 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 and there is a free software active developer 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 So now i will talk about some events that [br]has been taking place during the last two 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 years, this is the CubaConf and these the [br]Free Technologies Cuban Conference 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 CubaConf, is an international conference about[br]Free Software and open technologies that have 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 taken place in Havana, Cuba since 2016.[br]CubaConf is a meeting from the international[br] 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 community of enthusiasts of many parts of[br]the world besides the Cuban local communities, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 peer to peer focused and collective[br]development. It seeks the participation of people[br] 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 with different profiles and diverse geographical[br]locations. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 [???] CubaConf that was on 2016, we have[br]here the last that was in November of last 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 year and we had the opportunity to have[br]some Debian developers, for instance in 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 2016 Tiago Bortolleto and Tassia Camões[br]went to CubaConf and they pushed to 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 create with Leonel Salazar a Cuban[br]free software developer to organize 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 for the first time the mini-debconf[br]in Cuba. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 From the organization of the conference[br]it is aimed at the diversity of topics and[br] 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 projects, as of its participants, so the [br]participation of women, minority groups 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 in these activities is crucial to build new [br]inclusive spaces of knowledge and dialogue 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 about technology. The main idea is to know [br]people experience and organizations who 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 work with and in Free Software, with old [br]hardware technologies and little or slow 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 bandwidth, to talk about how Free Software[br]can help developing countries. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 During the last CubaConf we had a great[br]number of girls participating with talks 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 and even attending the event and that was[br]very motivating, we also had a talk with Molly 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 de Blanc of the Free Software Foundation[br]and she did a very nice presentation 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 And this is the global photo from last year 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 Now I will talk about the mini debconf,[br]CubaConf 2016 these encounters between 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 Tassia, Tiago and Leonel, has pushed to[br]organize for the first time the mini debconf 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 in Cuba. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 This college is Leonel Salazar Videaux[br]and he's one of the founders of UTL and 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 DebianHlg in Holguín, he's a free software[br]user since 2004 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 First time using Debian GNU/Linux was with[br]“Sarge”,[br] 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 he has been spreading the Debian Project[br]in local communities in Cuba and organizing[br] 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 events as MiniDebConf. He is a programmer[br]has a profession. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 So during last mini debconf we had some topics[br]like how about to help the debian project 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 from Cuba, the Cuban community share 2[br]main projects where Misox and VideoMorph 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 developers showed how is the development[br]of the programs and how to use them 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 Also I had the opportunity to present a talk[br]about reproducible builds for first time in 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 Spanish and it was very useful to track[br]new debian enthusiasts users and also to 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 the currently developers like Mike and Oscar[br]from Videomorph and Misox, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 it was a new topic to start taking care with[br]the principles of the reproducible builds 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 in the construction of then new versions[br]for their development with Misox and 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 Videomorph. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 So much of this work has been carried [br]out by enthusiastic and committed people[br] 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 with Debian and the Free Software [br]movement, that despite the different 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 difficulties to sustain some costs[br]economically, access the Internet, acquire 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 computer hardware and achieve official[br]recognition as developers of some 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 Free Software community in the world [br]due to all the above, they continue to 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 contribute in a decisive way projects[br]that should be available to everyone 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 inside and outside of Cuba. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 Because for instance the Misox project[br]Videomorph and many other programs 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 are hosted in the REGUTL by the limitations[br]of hardware, money available to the Cuban 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 users 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 In that way I consider that it would be very[br]interesting and important to think 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 about how the Debian could support and [br]recognize those who contribute directly to 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 the use and development of our [br]distribution, in places where there[br] 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 is a willingness to do so and strengthen [br]our community by being inclusive of them? 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 Because we know the Debian Social Contract,[br]our guidelines, but how can we 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 considered to those that are in a country[br]in which you could connect to the 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 internet but it's very expensive and [br]if you want to interact with the mailing 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 list or you want to stay in contact with[br]another debian maintainer or debian 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 developers it's not so easy, because simple[br]you don't have the conditions 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 So I want to leave the question to have a [br]dialog and to see what do you think, which[br] 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 possibilities are in the debian project to[br]support for instance the Misox development 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 that is based on debian and even the packages[br]will be in the repositories in the free section 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 Well that is all, and thank you very much for[br]your attention 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 [Applause] 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 Any comments or questions? 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 [Q:] The Misox distribution is it[br]registrated with the derivatives [???] do 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 you know if they already collaborate with[br]debian in that way? 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 [A:] No the Misox development is [???] just[br]by local developers in Cuba, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 and they have not make contact with some[br]debian developers outside. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 Then would be my first suggestion, for them[br]to just inform debian in a relatively 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 formalized way what is this they are doing,[br]with derives from debian how is it different 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 That's an helpful thing to me and I believe [br]also for other in debian and also from 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 outside debian to compare, and then[br]getting [???] what would be interesting 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 to cherry pick and put into debian,[br]and what would be important to coordinate 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 So the very reference that they exist[br]in a more formal way it's not a lot of work 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 just a wikipage to inform, who to contact[br]how to contact, i remember once 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 looking at Misox webpage and trying to[br]navigate, and I was lost in locating who 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 should I even contact, how is it structured[br]and that's partially a cost because I 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 don't understand Spanish , so that's one[br][???] personally , but that could be other 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 things also, how do they put the information[br]for their users, and how to present it for 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 debian, and collaborate with us. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 Ok, thank you... 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 [Q:] Just want to ask how are yourself[br]related to the Cuban community? 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 [A:] I was in contact with some developers[br]like Leonel, Maikel, Delio because the 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 CubaConf and the mini-debconf have[br]this knowledge, beyond this I don't know 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 if there are more projects that are[br]underground more than this 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 so yes this is the only contact that I[br]have with the Cuban developers 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 of free software. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 [Q:] Can you tell a bit more about the kind[br]of barriers, I understand the one that is 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 expensive, so technically possible to get[br]online but expensive, but are there other 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 kind of barriers? Is there a wall like in[br]China, what kind of barriers is there for 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 the developers in Cuba to collaborate[br]with others in Debian? 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 [A:] My opinion I consider that the main[br]barrier is to pay to connect to the internet 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 because in free software movement the [br]connection to the internet has been very 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 important to stay in touch with another [br]developers or interested users , so 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 in the case of Cuba they have an internet[br]but if they want to socialize there programs 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 outside the island you have to pay for[br]instance 5 [???] that is more or less 4 euro 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 per 5 hours of internet and not always the[br]connection is good, because you need to 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 go to public parks or you need to go to[br]some monument, a public place which 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 there are access points and then you use [br]your card and try to get an IP, but this is 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 really hard sometimes, you could wait 20, [br]25 minutes, because there are a lot of 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 people with smartphones, and more devices[br]and even if you , in my personal situation 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 when i was in Cuba, I tried to connect to[br]the internet and I delayed around 35, 40 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 minutes to get an IP to my computer,[br]so first it's the main obstacle to 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 communicate with another people outside[br]using internet. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 By other hand the hardware, the weather[br]conditions, it is very hot, and they do not 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 have air conditioner on systems to maintain[br]community projects or self driven serves 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 Unless you are working in some institution[br]or in the government or in a university, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 you could have a chance to host your [br]project in your local computer and then 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 use a public IP, maybe , but if you are not[br]working in these fields of technology in 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 Cuba, is very hard, if you are an[br]independent and you want to contribute 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 and let it know more people about your[br]project you need to connect to the network 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 and you need to pay also because internet[br]is not money free in Cuba. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 I was also thinking in the kind of tools, [br]does it feel from the perspective of 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 Cubans, does it feel [???] social for[br]debian developers to be hanging 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 out on IRC so they need to be[br]real online, would it be more beneficial 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 to them if some of us is using mail more[br]or mailing list more, or IRC more, forms more 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 [???] you have noticed, the styles of [br]communication could be helpful for this 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 kind of barriers. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 I think that if that would be possible,[br]if the Cuban developers could at least use 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 IRC and communicate with some Debian [br]maintainers or developers, maybe an 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 interchange of knowledge , they could learn[br]more from you and also you could take 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 their packages into some GIT lab server or [br]you could be some kind of Debian sponsor 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 to be public and allow the public access[br]outside of Cuba to this software, for 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 instance Misox or another one from RepoGUTL[br]and maybe you could help in that way, but 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 Cuban developer needs to connect to the [br]network, to be in constant communication.
