WEBVTT 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 I'm here to tell you about the real search 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 for alien life. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Not little green humanoids arriving in shiny UFOs, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 although that would be nice. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 But it's the search for planets 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 orbiting stars far away. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Every star in our sky is a sun. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 And if uur sun has planets -- 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars, etc. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Surely those other stars should have planets also 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 -- and they do. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 And in the last two decades, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 astronomers have found thousands of exoplanets. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Our night sky is literally teeming with exoplanets. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 We know, statistically speaking, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 that every star has at least one planet. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 And in the search for planets, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 and in the future, planets that might be like earth, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 we're able to help address 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 some of the most amazing and mysterious questions 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 that have faced humankind for centuries. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Why are we here? 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Why does our universe exist? 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 How did earth form and evolve? 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 How and why did life originate and populate our planet? 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 The second question that we often think about 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 is are we alone? 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Is there life out there? 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Who is out there? 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 You know, this question has been around 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 for thousands of years, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 since at least the time of the Greek philosophers. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 But, I'm here to tell you just how close we're getting 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 to finding out the answer to this question. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 It's the first time in human history 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 that this really is within reach for us. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Now when I think about the possibilities 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 for life out there, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 I think of the fact that our sun 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 is one but many stars. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 This is a photograph of a real galaxy, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 we think our milky way looks like this galaxy. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 It's a collection of bound stars. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 But our milky way is one of hundreds of billions of stars 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 and our galaxy is one of upwards of hundreds of billions of galaxies. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Knowing that small planets are very common, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 you can just do the math. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 And there are just so many stars and so many planets out there, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 that surely, there must be life somewhere out there. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Well, the biologists get furious with me for saying that, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 because we have absolutely no evidence 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 for life beyond earth, yet. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Well, if we were able to look at our galaxy from the outside 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 and zoom in to where our sun is, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 we see a real map of the stars. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 And the highlighted stars are ones with known exoplanets, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 this is really just the tip of the iceberg. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Here, this animation is zooming in onto our solar system. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 And you'll see here some planets as well as some spacecraft 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 that are also orbiting our sun. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Now if we can imagine going to the west coast 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 of North America and looking out on the night sky, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 here's what we'd see on a spring night. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 And you can see the constellations overlaid 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 and again, so many stars with planets. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 There's a special patch of the sky 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 where we have thousands of planets. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 This is where the Kepler Space Telescope focused for many years. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Let's zoom in and look at one of the favorite exoplanets. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 This star is called Kepler 180-6F. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 It's a system of about five planets. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 And by the way, most of these exoplanets, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 we don't know too much about. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 We know their size, and their orbit and things like that. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 But there's a very special planet here called Kepler 180-6F, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 this planet is in a zone that is not too far from the star, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 so that the temperature may be just right for life. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Here, the ar
