9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 [Pensive music.] 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 The story of our communities,[br]people, and nation 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 starts a long, long[br]time ago. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 [Music] 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 More than 60,000 years,[br]in fact. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 [Music.] 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 This was when our culture[br]and our law 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 first started to thrive. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 [Music.] 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 We knew who we were,[br]and where we belonged. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 We took care of each other, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 our land, and our waters. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 We ate food that [br]made us healthy. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 Lived on country, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 and abided by our laws,[br]and song lines. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 Our families, our children,[br]were happy, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 with strong minds and hearts,[br]because 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 they were where they belonged. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 [Strong music.] 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 [Soft heartbeat.] 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 But, then... 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 everything changed. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 Colonization came, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 bringing wars, disease,[br]famine. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 Violence. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 And the destruction[br]and violation 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 of our cultural laws, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 sacred sites, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 families,[br]and communities. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 We were denied our knowledge, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 language, ceremonies,[br]and identity. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 The very things that tell us 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 who we are,[br]and where we belong. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 And our connections 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 with each other, and the land,[br]grew weak. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 And then, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 our children [br]were taken from us. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 They had their names changed, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 and their identities stripped away. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 They were told[br]that aboriginal people were bad. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 Worse still, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 they were told 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 that their parents,[br]and grandparents, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 did not want them. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 For years, this happened. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 Those children became known 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 as "The Stolen Generations." 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 Our children were denied love, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 and experienced physical, emotional,[br]and sexual abuse. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 This left very deep,[br]very complex, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 and very real wounds, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 leaving scars that are [br]still being felt 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 personally, socially,[br]spiritually, and collectively. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 In the time[br]when our story started, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 we were able to parent[br]in the cultural way 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 that has seen our family [br]survive and thrive, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 for generations. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 Our people were strong, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 and our culture flowed, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 and healed us[br]in times of hurt. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 But, since the trauma[br]of colonization 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 and the stolen generations, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 we have not been able to heal[br]in the same way. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 We have unknowingly passed[br]this trauma to our children, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 through sharing our sad stories, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 and having them witness[br]and experience our pain. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 This is known as[br]Intergenerational Trauma. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 We see symptoms today, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 in broken relationships, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 disconnected families, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 violence, suicide, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 and drug and alcohol abuse. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 But, this is not[br]where our story ends. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 We still have[br]strong minds and hearts, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 and we still know 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 who we were,[br]and where we belong. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 By creating safe and strong[br]communities together, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 supporting our families[br]to be free from pain, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 returning to our culture, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 and building a strength[br]of identity, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 we can stop the cycle[br]of trauma, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 and bring about [br]positive intergenerational change, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 so that we can continue 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 to thrive for the next[br]60,000 years. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 There are simple things 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 that we can all do,[br]to help heal our trauma. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 Visit 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 healingfoundation.org.au 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 to find out more.
