0:00:00.089,0:00:03.840 You may have heard some variation of the joke[br]"how do you know someone's vegan? 0:00:03.840,0:00:05.509 Don't worry, they'll tell you!" 0:00:05.509,0:00:09.960 Ironically, this joke captures one of the[br]reasons many—if not most—vegans actually 0:00:09.960,0:00:11.510 won't tell you they're vegan. 0:00:11.510,0:00:15.280 In this video we're not only going to look[br]into some of the reasons vegans hide their 0:00:15.280,0:00:21.430 veganism, but also how this self-silencing—and[br]its causes—harms all of us—vegan or not. 0:00:21.430,0:00:24.090 But the solution may not be what you expect. 0:00:24.090,0:00:26.668 Essentially, we need to evolve towards a world 0:00:26.922,0:00:28.500 without vegans. 0:00:28.500,0:00:32.810 (I promise I’ll explain that…) 0:00:37.134,0:00:40.739 Hi, it's Emily from BiteSizeVegan.org, where[br]you can find the article for this video with 0:00:40.739,0:00:42.789 my sources and more information. 0:00:42.789,0:00:46.660 While the first few sections of we'll cover[br]may sound like a commercial for why you should 0:00:46.660,0:00:52.550 never consider moving away from eating animals,[br]there is evidence things may be changing. 0:00:52.550,0:00:57.480 But before we can speak to the solutions and[br]signs of hope, we need to understand the fear 0:00:57.480,0:01:01.300 that disclosure their veganism holds for many vegans. 0:01:01.300,0:01:06.600 Research shows that negativity toward vegans[br]is not only widespread but also "largely accepted" 0:01:06.600,0:01:10.610 and not seen as a societal problem, unlike other forms of bias. 0:01:10.610,0:01:15.701 So, while vegans face bias and even outright[br]hate like other stigmatized groups, their 0:01:15.701,0:01:21.130 experience is compounded by the fact that[br]hating on vegans is generally acceptable—even 0:01:21.130,0:01:22.220 socially encouraged. 0:01:22.220,0:01:27.140 Documentary filmmaker Kelly Guerin's experience[br]of "coming out vegan" was so jarring that 0:01:27.140,0:01:31.470 she focused her Honors Thesis in Anthropology[br]on better understanding the source of the 0:01:31.470,0:01:33.008 aggression she encountered: 0:01:33.008,0:01:38.070 She said: “I expected my friends and family would[br]mock me as they had...when I became vegetarian. 0:01:38.070,0:01:42.310 What I did not expect was the hostility I[br]faced and the almost daily confrontations 0:01:42.310,0:01:44.189 in which I found myself forced to engage. 0:01:44.189,0:01:49.421 I was called “freak”, “naïve”, and[br]was even told by one roommate 0:01:49.421,0:01:50.810 “you should just do the world a favor and kill yourself”. 0:01:50.810,0:01:55.270 Shockingly, an old friend who had recently[br]turned vegan confided that he found it much 0:01:55.270,0:01:59.869 harder emotionally to tell people he was a[br]vegan than it was to come out as a homosexual 0:01:59.869,0:02:01.649 in a conservative middle school." 0:02:01.649,0:02:06.110 In my video and article "The Science of Why[br]People Hate Vegans," I explore what research—including 0:02:06.110,0:02:10.460 Guerin's thesis—has to say about what motivates[br]these kinds of responses. 0:02:10.460,0:02:14.780 I won't reiterate that entire video here,[br]but one of the key takeaways is that when 0:02:14.780,0:02:20.150 we take the time to understand the defenses[br]behind such negativity toward vegans, we can 0:02:20.150,0:02:26.083 see that they primarily arise from a place[br]of personal distress rather than intentional cruelty. 0:02:26.110,0:02:30.360 At the same time, understanding the source[br]of negativity or aggression doesn't always 0:02:30.360,0:02:34.140 make being on the receiving end of it any less distressing. 0:02:34.140,0:02:36.610 Nor does it make that negativity acceptable. 0:02:36.610,0:02:41.340 While it's helpful for us to lower our own[br]defenses in order to have more effective interactions 0:02:41.340,0:02:46.500 with people, it's equally important that we[br]validate how painful, isolating, infuriating, 0:02:46.500,0:02:49.560 and challenging it can be to be openly vegan in this world. 0:02:49.560,0:02:53.938 In understanding all sides, we start to see[br]the common threads of humanity 0:02:53.938,0:02:55.970 that run throughout our discord. 0:02:55.970,0:03:00.560 As we’ve discussed, one of the most common[br]reasons vegans self-silence is to avoid stigma 0:03:00.560,0:03:02.120 and stereotypes. 0:03:02.120,0:03:07.360 Essentially, vegans desire what most of us[br]desire: to be judged for who we are rather 0:03:07.360,0:03:09.310 than who people think we are. 0:03:09.310,0:03:13.319 Studies show that the most prominent negative[br]perception of vegans is that they're judgmental, 0:03:13.319,0:03:15.400 self-righteous, and arrogant. 0:03:15.400,0:03:19.050 Some people have had interactions with vegans[br]where they felt judged or attacked—and, 0:03:19.050,0:03:22.230 let’s be honest, they very well may have been. 0:03:22.230,0:03:27.099 At the same time, research shows that even[br]the gentlest message from a vegan is often 0:03:27.099,0:03:32.099 received as aggressive, and even just the[br]mention of a vegan can put people on guard. 0:03:32.099,0:03:37.990 People often anticipate being judged by vegans,[br]which raises their defenses—and vegans anticipate 0:03:37.990,0:03:42.470 being seen as judgemental, raising their defences as well. 0:03:42.470,0:03:48.480 Essentially, vegans can be prejudged as judgmental[br]out of the fear of being judged. 0:03:48.480,0:03:53.099 If they have to disclose their veganism, vegans[br]are put in the precarious position of trying 0:03:53.099,0:03:58.480 to preemptively defend themselves from the[br]assumption they're judgmental while not coming 0:03:58.480,0:04:02.050 across as judgmental in their defense. 0:04:02.050,0:04:06.650 Vegans may “soften” their veganism to[br]avoid conflict, being stereotyped, and/or 0:04:06.650,0:04:08.810 to make sure those around them don’t feel judged. 0:04:08.810,0:04:14.340 As one study participant put it, "I have to[br]defend myself and protect them at the same 0:04:14.340,0:04:18.860 time," speaking to the dual burden of “feel[ing][br]responsible for making others feel comfortable 0:04:18.860,0:04:23.240 around her while at the same time…protecting[br]herself from verbal attacks.” 0:04:23.240,0:04:28.350 Many veg*ns feel they must also "balance the[br]tension between staying true to their...beliefs...and 0:04:28.350,0:04:32.701 fitting in socially," emphasising that they[br]are proud of who they are and what they believe in. 0:04:32.701,0:04:36.660 For some vegans, self-silencing is not so[br]much about fitting in socially as it is the 0:04:36.660,0:04:41.738 exhaustive demands of explaining themselves,[br]which we'll explore soon in a dedicated 0:04:41.738,0:04:43.759 (and, frankly, cathartic section). 0:04:43.759,0:04:48.650 Understandably, many vegans just avoid opening[br]the door in the first place. 0:04:48.650,0:04:53.690 Ironically, the self-silencing of vegans may[br]actually reinforce some of the very stigmas 0:04:53.690,0:04:55.949 and stereotypes they are trying to avoid. 0:04:55.949,0:05:00.840 After all, no one can experience a vegan positively[br]when they don't know they're vegan in the 0:05:00.840,0:05:01.840 first place. 0:05:01.840,0:05:07.277 You may have had many positively delightful[br]interactions with vegans and have absolutely no idea! 0:05:07.390,0:05:11.890 This is why some vegans take the approach[br]of letting people get to know them first before 0:05:11.890,0:05:13.720 disclosing that they're vegan. 0:05:13.720,0:05:19.250 But this isn't always possible and—for some[br]of us—it's the people who know us best that 0:05:19.250,0:05:21.650 have the most painful reactions. 0:05:21.650,0:05:27.360 Another reason vegans self-silence is due to the fear of being[br]rejected, mocked, or dismissed. 0:05:27.389,0:05:32.010 For many vegans, this fear comes from real-life painful experiences. 0:05:32.010,0:05:36.250 Rejection is something we humans take extreme measures to avoid. 0:05:36.250,0:05:41.530 The pain of rejection is significantly magnified[br]when it's in response to a core aspect of 0:05:41.530,0:05:44.910 our identity or a firmly held core value. 0:05:44.910,0:05:50.141 This adds an additional layer for vegans motivated[br]by ethical concerns for other animals, 0:05:50.141,0:05:53.430 the environment, human rights, and/or societal health. 0:05:53.430,0:05:58.280 Mockery and dismissal of their veganism feels[br]not only like a rejection of who they are, 0:05:58.280,0:06:03.940 but also like mockery and dismissal of the[br]very real suffering and exploitation of other 0:06:03.940,0:06:08.720 animals and humans alike, and of pressing[br]issues like the climate crisis. 0:06:08.720,0:06:13.280 Perhaps the most devastating magnifier of[br]rejection is when it comes from a central 0:06:13.280,0:06:16.660 figure in our life—especially from within our family of origin. 0:06:16.660,0:06:19.509 Nothing hits us quite like family does. 0:06:19.509,0:06:25.663 Disclosing veganism is often unavoidable with[br]family, and when that disclosure is met with negativity, 0:06:25.663,0:06:29.190 it often leads vegans to be vigilant[br]about not disclosing their veganism to other 0:06:29.190,0:06:32.210 people, or even returning to eating animals. 0:06:32.210,0:06:36.270 Now that we've covered some of the complex[br]pressures behind vegan self-silencing with 0:06:36.270,0:06:40.840 the sincerity and compassion they deserve,[br]let's take a moment to acknowledge a unifying 0:06:40.840,0:06:48.680 thread running throughout them all: [br]the fact that frankly, being openly vegan is exhausting. 0:06:48.680,0:06:52.360 This is a point that anyone can relate to on some level—vegan or not. 0:06:52.360,0:06:55.950 One of the reasons people can be uncomfortable[br]around vegans is that they feel they have 0:06:55.950,0:06:57.139 to defend themselves. 0:06:57.139,0:07:02.710 Well, for anyone openly vegan, this is a default[br]expectation at all times—and, it's just 0:07:02.710,0:07:04.110 the tip of the iceberg. 0:07:04.110,0:07:05.389 Imagine having to: 0:07:05.389,0:07:09.520 always be prepared to explain and defend every[br]aspect of veganism, and also 0:07:09.520,0:07:14.160 answer for every action of every vegan as[br]if you are somehow responsible for whatever 0:07:14.160,0:07:19.260 some vegan somewhere did, and also[br]have data and statistics for every potential 0:07:19.260,0:07:22.389 question, and also make sure your responses don't come across 0:07:22.389,0:07:26.970 as judgmental or combative—even if you were[br]approached with aggression, and even if you're 0:07:26.970,0:07:32.150 being actively judged and preached to while[br]being accused of being judgmental and preachy, 0:07:32.150,0:07:34.690 and also make sure that your responses are suited to 0:07:34.690,0:07:37.990 the exact individual and situation you're in, and also 0:07:37.990,0:07:42.270 preserve the relationship if with a friend,[br]family member, work colleague, or boss, and also 0:07:42.270,0:07:44.970 try not to bring in any emotional intensity 0:07:44.970,0:07:49.659 from your previous experiences of being rejected,[br]mocked, insulted, and disparaged for being 0:07:49.659,0:07:53.340 vegan, and also make sure not to reflect badly on all other 0:07:53.340,0:07:57.940 vegans and veganism itself, and also[br]try not to betray your own convictions, the 0:07:57.940,0:08:00.780 animals, the planet, or all of society, and also 0:08:00.780,0:08:05.870 do all of this with the knowledge that by[br]answering questions posed to you, you may 0:08:05.870,0:08:10.919 be accused of "talking about veganism all the time." 0:08:10.919,0:08:16.340 Being openly vegan can feel like having to[br]be a sociologist, psychologist, and walking 0:08:16.340,0:08:22.000 encyclopedia with expert "skills in emotional[br]and social negotiation" and infinite patience 0:08:22.000,0:08:23.199 and compassion. 0:08:23.199,0:08:28.389 Honestly, sometimes you just want to be a[br]person around other people. 0:08:28.389,0:08:33.820 Now again, this may sound like a commercial[br]for why you should never consider going vegan 0:08:33.820,0:08:38.680 or moving away from eating animals, but there[br]is evidence that things may be changing. 0:08:38.680,0:08:42.723 But before we get to that note of hope, let’s[br]look at how vegan self-silencing 0:08:42.723,0:08:45.459 —and its causes—actually harm all of us. 0:08:45.459,0:08:49.990 As I've hinted at throughout this video, the[br]pressures motivating vegans to self-silence—and 0:08:49.990,0:08:55.630 the act of self-silencing itself—have a[br]larger-scale impact than just individual vegans. 0:08:55.630,0:09:00.720 We as a society are becoming increasingly[br]concerned about climate change, workers' rights, 0:09:00.720,0:09:05.720 dangers to our community's health, food insecurity,[br]and what happens to animals in our food system. 0:09:05.720,0:09:11.740 The need for a societal evolution away from[br]eating animals is becoming more and more evident 0:09:11.740,0:09:16.360 for the well-being of our planet, our communities,[br]and of course, the animals themselves. 0:09:16.360,0:09:21.910 At the same time, we humans are social animals,[br]and we often look to what most other people 0:09:21.910,0:09:24.470 are doing to aid in our decision-making. 0:09:24.470,0:09:27.380 And most people are still eating animals. 0:09:27.380,0:09:32.660 So even if we feel discomfort about what animals[br]go through to get to our plate or we're concerned 0:09:32.660,0:09:36.839 about the climate, it doesn't look like other people are that worried. 0:09:36.839,0:09:40.630 Researchers behind the delightfully named[br]study ""How do you know someone’s vegan?” 0:09:40.630,0:09:45.440 They won’t always tell you” propose that[br]vegan self-silencing could reinforce this 0:09:45.440,0:09:50.779 perception that not eating animals is some[br]"niche phenomenon" only adopted by a few people 0:09:50.779,0:09:52.110 on the fringe of society. 0:09:52.110,0:09:56.010 While it may seem like a small matter for[br]individual vegans to stay silent about their 0:09:56.010,0:10:00.630 veganism, the study authors reference how[br]"[s]eemingly trivial differences in the number 0:10:00.630,0:10:05.190 of people that hold a certain personal preference[br]within smaller groups can, in the long run, 0:10:05.190,0:10:08.720 result in macro-level consequences for entire societies." 0:10:08.720,0:10:14.560 From this viewpoint, "[t]he tendency to self-silence[br]among veg*ans may prevent the onset of momentum 0:10:14.560,0:10:18.220 and[…]critical mass that is needed to achieve[br]a societal tipping point." 0:10:18.220,0:10:23.440 At the same time, simply asking vegans to[br]be more vocal about their veganism places 0:10:23.440,0:10:27.679 them in the Catch-22 of eliciting the very[br]stigma we’ve covered. 0:10:27.679,0:10:33.870 The problem isn’t so much vegan self-silencing,[br]but rather the reasons driving that silence. 0:10:33.870,0:10:39.350 As we've learned in this video, going against[br]social norms can have social consequences. 0:10:39.350,0:10:43.880 Research shows that the fear of receiving[br]the same treatment as vegans prevents other 0:10:43.880,0:10:47.610 people from taking steps to move away from[br]eating animals. 0:10:47.610,0:10:52.440 Steps they’d be open to exploring were it[br]not for the potential social backlash. 0:10:52.440,0:10:58.380 This may seem like an impossible gridlock[br]of necessary yet understandably resisted change. 0:10:58.380,0:11:00.780 But there is evidence things may be shifting. 0:11:00.780,0:11:04.600 Researchers, advocates, political leaders,[br]and organizations are becoming aware of the 0:11:04.600,0:11:10.160 importance of institutional support for a[br]societal evolution away from farming animals. 0:11:10.160,0:11:14.639 A shift in our collective relationship with[br]eating animals has to involve more than us 0:11:14.639,0:11:19.130 as individuals, and there are organizations[br]working at a systemic level in an effort that 0:11:19.130,0:11:21.290 none of us have to shoulder this alone. 0:11:21.290,0:11:24.829 For example, some universities, hospitals,[br]schools, governmental bodies, businesses, 0:11:24.829,0:11:29.850 and even fast-food chains serve plant-based[br]food as their default, with the option to 0:11:29.850,0:11:32.380 "opt-in" to animal-based food. 0:11:32.380,0:11:37.040 These programs have shown a significant decrease[br]in animal food consumption, and changing attitudes 0:11:37.040,0:11:38.079 about plant-based foods. 0:11:38.079,0:11:43.540 They’ve found that when not eating animals[br]is the norm rather than the deviation, people—including 0:11:43.540,0:11:47.000 meat-eaters—are more likely to enjoy eating plant-based meals. 0:11:47.000,0:11:52.720 In essence, rather than moving towards a world[br]where everyone is vegan, we need to move to 0:11:52.720,0:11:59.010 a world without vegans at all—where not[br]eating animals is simply our default. 0:11:59.010,0:12:05.290 Where we can all collectively act on our shared[br]values without fear of going it alone. 0:12:05.290,0:12:10.790 On an individual level, the less we stigmatize[br]and stereotype vegans—or anyone's effort 0:12:10.790,0:12:15.220 to move away from eating animals—the more[br]welcome people will feel to be open about 0:12:15.220,0:12:16.220 their choices. 0:12:16.220,0:12:21.050 And the more we see other people acting on[br]the things we also care about, the more welcome 0:12:21.050,0:12:23.560 we can feel to make our own changes. 0:12:23.560,0:12:26.820 I would love to hear your thoughts on this[br]topic in the comments.
