>> Hello and welcome.
Thank you for viewing the SONA system
tutorial intended for students.
This tutorial will teach
students four primary things.
First, how to view research
studies in the SONA system.
Second, how to set up appointments
in the SONA system.
Third, how to communicate with
researchers through the SONA system.
And forth, how to cancel
appointments in the SONA system.
To view a study and set up
appointments within the SONA system,
log on to your SONA student account.
Once logged in, click view available
studies from your home page.
Here, you will see a list of current
studies that you can choose from.
To set up an appointment, select the study you
are interested in and click timeslots available.
From here, click view timeslots for the study.
Once the page loads, locate a timeslot which
fits your availability and click sign up.
SONA will ask you to confirm your
appointment so be sure to click sign up again.
After confirming your appointment, you will
receive an automated e-mail notifying you
of your appointment confirmation.
Please make note of the date, time, location,
and any special instructions
regarding the study.
When signing up for studies, keep in mind
that if you do not cancel your appointment
within 24 hours or if you do not show
up to the designated study location,
you will be marked as a no-show for the study.
Penalties for unexcused absences are
covered later in this presentation.
Be sure to check the available
studies frequently
for updated timeslots from researchers.
Once you have signed up for a study,
you may find that you would
like to contact a researcher.
If you would like to ask a researcher
about a particular research study,
you can find the researcher's e-mail located
under the study descriptions
on the SONA website.
If you have questions about how much one SONA
credit translates to the extra credit assigned
in your class, the researcher will likely be
unable to accurately tell you this information
so be sure to check your syllabus.
If the information is not
provided on your syllabus,
reach out to your course
instructor for more information.
If you show up to a scheduled appointment and
you find that the researcher is not present,
double-check that you are
at the correct location.
Wait at least 15 minutes after
your scheduled appointment time
and the location assigned to your study.
If you are at the correct location and waited
15 minutes past the appropriate appointment date
and time, e-mail the researcher
and notify them of your attendance
to receive full credit for the study.
Be sure to e-mail the researcher and submit
this request for credit within 48 hours
of the incident to ensure
you receive full credit.
After signing up for a study,
you may run into a situation
where you can no longer attend
the scheduled appointment.
Should you find the need
to cancel your appointment,
be sure to do so within the SONA system at least
24 hours prior to your scheduled appointment.
To cancel your study, go to your home
page and click my schedule my credits.
From here, a list of your scheduled
study appointments will appear.
Find the appointment you would like
to withdraw from and click cancel.
SONA will ask you to confirm your cancellation.
Click yes to confirm.
Once you have canceled your appointment,
you will receive an automated
e-mail confirming your cancellation.
Keep in mind that failure to cancel a scheduled
appointment without 24 hours notice will result
in an unexcused, no-show absence.
Unexcused absences will result
to a 0.5 SONA credit penalty
and an automatic lock on your SONA account.
If you have been locked out of the
SONA system, you will need permission
from the SONA administrator
to reactivate your account.
After three official unexcused
absences, your account will be locked
out for the remainder of the semester.
When canceling an appointment
after the 24-hour deadline,
you will be unable to do
so within the SONA system.
To officially cancel your appointment, you
must e-mail the researcher as soon as possible.
Researcher e-mails can be found under the
study description on the SONA website.
In your e-mail, provide your SONA ID, the date
and time of your scheduled study appointment,
and your justification for canceling.
After sending the 24 hour cancellation notice,
if you fail to attend your appointment,
the researcher will mark your
attendance as excused or unexcused.
It is up to the researcher's discretion
to make this decision once the
24-hour deadline has passed.
This concludes the student study
participation training in the SONA system.
