WEBVTT 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Dear respected Thay, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Dear noble community 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Dear young ones 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Thank you for practicing 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Did you enjoy practicing? 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 So nice to see you you can sit still huh? 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 I used to practice in monastery called Deer Park Monastery 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 in southern California 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 it is in America 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 And the monastery there is in the mountain 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 high up in the mountain 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 you have to drive a long road up the mountain 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 once you are up the mountain 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 you have to drive down to valley 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 that's where the monastery is 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 It's called the hidden mountain 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Deer Park Monastery in the hidden mountain 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Because from the city you can not see the monastery 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Because it's kind of like in the valley of the mountain 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 And in that mountain used to live native Americans 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 You know native Americans 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 the ones that live in America before the europeans came 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 and other people came 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 and we found big rocks in the mountain that have little holes in them 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 and they make the holes like that 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 and put acorn from the oak trees 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 you can find some in the oak tree forest here 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 and the acorn they put in the hole 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 and they grind it up with a stone 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 and they make like a paste 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 it is kind of like a bread 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 long time ago 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 before they know how to baking 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 and you know ovens and stuff 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 They make these acorn powder 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 and they soak it in the river first 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 and then they make this paste 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 and they eat it 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 it is kind of like musli 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 or kind of like rice pudding 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 so there is where we find many boulders 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 and they have a lot of holes in them 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 and you can tell this is where the kitchen is 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 because you know you can see 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 you sit there you can imagine 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 must have been a lot of people living here 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 cause they have many holes in the rocks 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 and I bet you like they were 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 mothers, grandmothers, young boys and young girls 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 kind of helping their grandma 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 grinding the acorn 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 sometime I climb the mountain 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 I sit there with in a boulder 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 and I imagine I am a indian boy 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 and I sit peacefully for them 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 The energy is still there 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 sometime I go through the forest 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 and I pretend like I am an indian boy 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 and I go explore 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 And sometimes I find out where the coyote is 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 in the hidden mountain there is also living 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 You know what a coyote is 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 They make like this wild crazy sound 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 They live with us in Deer Park 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 and sometimes I am lucky 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 and I go and I explore 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 and you can find their trails 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 and you can find little places 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 where they sleep 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 because they put the grass and 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 you can see it is kind of like a little nest 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 and you can see where the shape maybe the coyote lay down 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 and those really the part of native culture 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 they really had connection with the coyotes 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 and at nighttime sometime when the monks invite the temple bell 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 you know the big temple bell 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 and before they invite it they have to wake up the big temple bell 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 bong bong 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 and the coyotes start to call 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 and you really smile before you even get 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 to chant the coyote chant already 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 and it makes you feel you are so connected 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 like they are singing with you 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 and only one pack sometime 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 there is another pack on the other valley 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 and they start to answer 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 you sit there and you feel like you are 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 connected to all of the nature and forest there 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 This is environment I grew up as a monk 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 and I was very close to the mountain 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 It is a very beautiful mountain with a lot of boulders 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 they look like giant potatoes
