WEBVTT 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Y'all when I started researching for this 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 video I honestly thought it was going to 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 be faster 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 huh 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 I thought I knew everything I genuinely 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 did I was a backer for the Lisa Frank 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Glamour Dolls campaign back in 2017 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 I really thought I knew the story 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 I saw other peoples videos on it 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 and I was in it, I did 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 all of the things, I was part of it. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 My friend, oh-my gosh, I did not know. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 There was so much that I did not know 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 It is so fucked up, like I am just- 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 I am absolutely blown away. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Because the thing is, the more I started 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 looking into it, the more things that I found 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 And the more connections I was making 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 And I was like oh my gosh. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 This is a story, my friend. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 There is so much that happened 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 in the Lisa Frank Glamour Dolls Collab 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 That we did not know, because everything 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 wasn't laid out through hindsight 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 we know hindsight is 20/20. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Now we're seeing 20/20 my friend. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 And the rainbows are not rainbowing, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 and the unicorns and the peguseseses, and 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 they're not, it's not good, it's very bad. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 So if you are ready, to go on this 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 wild journey with me 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 This is Behind the Controversy. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 And its starting right now. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 [Music] 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 I would dare to say, pretty much 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 everybody watching this video 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 has been online and seen something 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 that you never intended to purchase, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 but you had that impulse feeling. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 You had that feeling because, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 for some reason, you didn't know 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 that you needed this, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 and you needed to buy it. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Maybe it solves some kind of problem 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 in your life, maybe it was some kind of 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 advancement on something you already knew 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 or maybe it was due to nostalgia. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Something that reminded you of your childhood 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 or just when you were younger, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 something that made you feel happy, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 during that time. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 And maybe its even something that made 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 an entire generation feel happy. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 That's the feeling that the Backers had 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 when we saw that Lisa Frank was 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 coming out with makeup with a company 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 named Glamour Dolls. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Now we did not, a lot of us had never 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 heard of Glamour Dolls. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Imma be 100%, I'd never heard of 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Glamour Dolls before. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 But I had heard of Lisa Frank. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 And I was freaking out because 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 I was a sticker collector. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 I-I will tell you though, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 the scratch-and-sniff stickers 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 were my favorite, but Lisa Frank 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 stickers were super cool too. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 They were very very popular, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 and that's the way it was 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 for a lot of people that were GenX 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 or older millennials. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Mostly, probably mid-millennials as well. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 If it wasn't the stickers, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 maybe it was the school supplies. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Because Trapper Keepers were a thing. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 It was not just a regular notebook. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 It was a cool notebook. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 And they were kind of pricey, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 so if you had a Lisa Frank Trapper Keeper, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 you were cool. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Or if you were like me, you had a knock-off 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 version from K-mart, which made you 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 moderately cool. Not really. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 But we pretended we were. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 "I'll never forget the day 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 I got stuck on Lisa Frank. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 The stickers were so cool, the colors 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 were awesome. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 I gotta find more. So go to the store, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 And WOW, there's tons of awesome 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Lisa Frank stuff. I gotta have it! 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 What more can I say? 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Pretty soon my friends, Ashley and Lindsay 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 are going Lisa Frank Crazy too." 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 And like I mentioned earlier, the company 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 that started all of this wasn't super 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 well known. They're called Glamour Dolls, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 so they had to get their name out there 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 somehow, so they used an uber popular 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 youtuber, at the time, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 named Candy Johnson. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 And Candy Johnson was the perfect influencer 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 for this campaign. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 I don't even know if we were calling 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 people influencers at that point. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 But anyway, my point is that Candy Johnson 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 was top of her game. Everybody freaking 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 loved Candy, she was like the sweetest, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 sweetest, kindest person. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 And she has this really light voice. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 And everybody freakin' loved Candy. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 "Hi guys, 2016 is behind us, but 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 I am gonna share with you 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 my Best in Beauty of 2016. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Make sure if you have not subscribed, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 subscribe, join the family, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 become a Candy Corn. Candy Corn, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 like a Unicorn, but like candy corn, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 I don't know, I'll have to think 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 about that one. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 And follow me on Snapchat, Twitter, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Instagram, Facebook for all kinds of 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 different and awesome things." 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 So when Candy announced the collaboration 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 between Glamour Dolls and Lisa Frank, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 people lost their minds, they opened 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 their wallets to the tune of over $300,000 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Almost 6,000 people backed this project. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Now, if you don't know what 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 I'm talking about as far as Kickstarter 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 and "backing" a project, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 basically, it's kind of like a GoFundMe-ish 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 kind of thing, but for a business. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 So the business wants to make a product, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 but they don't have the money, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 so they go and they tell people 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 "Hey, we wanna make this product, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 if you back us, if you give us money 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 at different tiers, you'll get X products 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 for helping us to create the product." 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 This story has been told many times before. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 But I don't think it has been told 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 in this way, because what I'm gonna 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 focus on in this video is the point of view 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 of the Backers. What was it like to be 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 a backer from the beginning, and what 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 kind of tactics did Glamour Dolls use 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 to keep us hanging on for well over a year. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Where many, many people, including me, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 did not ask for refunds even after 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 they were over a year late in sending out 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 products. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Some of you are probably sitting there 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 thinking, like, "why didn't you know?" 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 like, "why didn't you see the red flags?" 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Like, "what happened?" 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 I'm going to tell you. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 I'm going to share with you what they 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 did to us. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 I'm pointing down because of a 22 page 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 script here with all the fucked-up shit 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 that they did. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Because, if you haven't figured it out yet 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Yea, we didn't get anything. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 [wheeze] Well some people got a little bit, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 but I didn't get anything 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 And the vast majority of people got 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 absolutely nothing, the people that did 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 get things, got very very little. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 It's layered. It's multi-layered. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 So lets just jump in to the very beginning 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 which was the start of the Kickstarter 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 in February of 2017. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 [Music] 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Something you might want to remember 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 about 2017 was that we didn't have 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 the inundation of weird collabs, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 like we do now, I mean, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 the Glamlite Pizza palette was still about 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 a year away, and that one broke 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 the internet. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 It was like the first really weird collab 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 that people were like "that's odd, but 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 also kind of cool". 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 The kind of collabs we were getting 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 at the time were things like 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Wonder Woman and Luxie 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 and PUR and the Trolls Movie. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 A makeup collaboration with Lisa Frank 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 had literally never been done before, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 so people, naturally, were very excited 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 due to that strong feeling of nostalgia. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 The Kickstarter launches with a maximum 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 bid of 40 dollars to get a few products 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 and a goal of 30,000 dollars. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 And the lowest buy-in to get something was 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 pretty cheap, at 5 dollars for what they 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 called, a digital background. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 It was an image that you could use as your 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 background on your phone, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 or on your computer, or whatever. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 The kickstarter ran for 45 days 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 from February 16, 2017, to April 2, 2017. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 It's also important to talk about the fact 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 that Glamour Dolls said that Backers 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 would have a say in the products 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 being created. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 That there would be polling and voting 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 and people would get sneak peaks, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 people would also get the products 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 at a discount, because the products 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 would eventually end up at retailers 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 but the Backers, because you bought 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 in a bundle, would get things cheaper 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 than you would get if you bought 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 the products individually. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Just 3 days into the campaign, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Glamour Dolls posted their update. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 They were so so excited. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 They said that Lisa was "opening 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 her vault and would be sending 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 1000 vintage goodies to be included, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 for the first 1000 Backers". 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 They promised a second treat, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 if they hit 2000 Backers, and Lisa 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 had something really special planned 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 if they made it to 10,000. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 They're just hyping the heck out of the 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Backers, because they also promised 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 something called "stretch rewards". 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 And they way they described it is not 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 how it turned out. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Basically, what they said is that 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 if the Backers, as a community, complete 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 a set of challenges, that something will 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 be unlocked, and this something was going 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 to be very very exciting. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Challenges included tasks like creating 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 a Lisa Frank-inspired makeup look 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 and taking a picture of it, writing a rap 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 about Glitter and tweeting it, and they 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 even had a challenge where a person 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 had to create a foil unicorn horn and put 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 it on their head and take a picture 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 of themselves in public, wearing 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 the unicorn horn. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 40 people had to take a picture of their 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 vintage Lisa Frank products and submit 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 those pictures. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 See, the community's participating, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 they're excited, they're talking about all 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 the things that they're doing because 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 in every comment section under each post 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 there's a place for people of the 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 community to communicate, to talk about 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 what's happening. Its almost like a 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 little, not a message board, but just 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 kind of a place to dump things that people 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 were thinking after the update. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 So people are hyped about this, they're 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 so excited about their stretch reward. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 And this is the first big disappointment 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 for the Backers. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Because it was not an extra item added to 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 the bag, it wasn't even a reward, because 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 when you think of a reward, you think 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 that you're getting something. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 What it actually was, was a mock-up photo 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 of an image of three-piece nail polish set 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 and this is the kicker about it, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 no pun intended, that the nail polish set 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 wasn't included in any of the levels, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 so nobody that had put in any money 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 at this point was going to get the 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 nail polishes that were featured 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 in the picture, in order to get the 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 nail polishes, you had to now increase 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 your bid by at least 15 dollars 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 because Glamour Dolls had just created 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 new tiers that required more investment 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 and the Backers were like "what?" 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 "That's it?" 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 What we just worked so hard for, we just 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 did all the challenges, 40 of us sent 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 pictures of our Lisa Frank stuff that we 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 dug out of our basement or out of 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 our attics, and we found the stuff and 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 we took the picture and we did 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 all the work, and we got a drawing of 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 something we're not getting unless we 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 spend more money? 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 That's what happened. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 I'm gonna put the whole post on the screen 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 for you to read, but I'll read one of the 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 key points. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 "We started this collection with a handful 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 of products, but a big part of this 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Kickstarter is expanding the collection 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 with the community and developing new 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 products to add to it. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 What maybe separates this Kickstarter from 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 others is that we don't know how big the 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 collection will ultimately be. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 It all depends on community engagement". 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 But the thing was is that they told people 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 how big it was going to be. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Because that's what they put their money 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 in for because it said if you put the 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 money in for this amount, then you'll get 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 this stuff, and now she's saying that it 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 may get even bigger than that. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Because what was about to happen is they 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 were about to add even more tiers with 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 even more products. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 The explanation continued with this, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 which was the kicker, "we would have told 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 you from the beginning" that basically it 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 was only a drawing of a mock-up of 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 something that no one was getting yet, but 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 "we only developed it last week. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 In response to fan engagement after we 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 researched cost formulations. For many 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 people, the challenges were a fun way to 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 unlock it and we'll be clear going 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 forward so you can choose whether 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 to participate". 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Unlock what? They unlocked a picture of 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 something they had to pay more for. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Thing is is that kind of the way that 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 these stretch rewards work, but they 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 didn't explain it to people that way. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 When people see a stretch reward, they're 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 going to think that they're getting 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 something as a reward. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 What it is traditionally called is 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 a "stretch goal" and that is not something 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 that is officially part of kickstarter, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 but something that Kickstarter campaigns 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 do often. They usually call them goals, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 not rewards, and from what I was reading, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 a lot of the stretch goals typically happen 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 after the Backers already have their first 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 set of products because they have gotten 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 their products, they're excited about it, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 they're loving it, and now they want 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 something more. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 So in order to stretch their amount that 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 they've collected and create more products 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 they have a stretch goal. So let's say, If 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 I get 100 people to donate 20 more dollars 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 we can create X products, so lets see if 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 we can get to our stretch goal, rather 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 than, it's a mystery, it's a game, it's a 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 reward, it wasn't. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 They just completely misrepresented 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 that to Backers. But I'm telling you, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 that snafu is mild, compared to what is 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 coming next, like that-that's just 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 extremely minor. It gets so so much worse. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 So trying to backtrack, Glamour Dolls 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 tells their Backers "hey, if we get to 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 3,500 Backers, then we're going to include 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 in everybody's bag, the first 3500 people, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 a Lisa Frank designed crease brush. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Sometimes they call this a crease brush, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 sometimes they call it a blending brush, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 its the same brush. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 The promise of the free crease brush, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 I am not kidding you, according to the 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Kickstarter brought them past that 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 3500 backer mark in 24 hours. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 So at this point in time, highest level 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 includes everything that they've said 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 so far, plus the nail polishes at a $60 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 price point. But people were still mad, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 people were like, this is not what you 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 said it was going to be, sir, ma'am, sir. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 So in response, Glamour Dolls was like 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 "ok, well, we will add something else, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 we'll add something from our own line", 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 It was what they called their 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 "Gypsy Eyeliners" to the first 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 2000 Backers who complete a survey 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 to pick their preferred color of this 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 liner. They were going to add that into 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 the boxes, and that I think kind of 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 calmed people down a little bit, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 they were like "ok, that feels more like 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 a reward." And people started getting 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 really excited about everything all over 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 again. A backer named Marsha said 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 "Wow, thanks yet again, the entire vibe 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 of this campaign totally reminds me of 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 what it felt like to open my noisy 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Lisa Frank Trapperkeeper, write with 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 my pencils, play with my erasers, that I 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 never used, to keep pristine, like dolls 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 LOL, etc. in school. It made me smile 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 and dream. I feel like we're all reliving 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 our childhoods through this campaign and 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 your team is making this fun. I'm hoping 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 this will begin a new generation 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 of Lisa Frank fans, when kids see us using 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 our stuff". 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Little did Marsha and the rest of us know, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 we'd never use the stuff, we're not 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 getting the stuff. In March of 2017, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 the Kickstarter is still going on, and 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 one of the founders and CEOs 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 of Glamour Dolls came on to clarify a 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 couple things. You're gonna see his name 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 coming up a lot. His name is Peter, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 he looks like that. Just so you can get 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 a visual of who we're talking to. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Peter, CEO, founder, Glamour Dolls, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 along with a chick named Jessica, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 that's Jessica. Back in 2017, unless you 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 were in the makeup industry, there wasn't 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 as much information readily available 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 about how makeup manufacturing worked, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 so Peter felt like it was important 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 to explain to the Backers, kind of, what 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 we were in for with this. He explained 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 something called minimum order quantities 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 and he said "as we get more pledges we 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 have to order more units and if the order 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 gets big enough, we are able to consider 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 adding new products, knowing that we will 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 be able to meet the factory minimums for 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 packaging and filling". 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 And then he says "as we add new products, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 there will need to be some higher pledge 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 tiers, there no way around it. I wish I 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 could tell you exactly how much the 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 highest tier will be or how many products 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 we'll end up with, but we came here to 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 figure that out with you. But, you may see 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 the problem with this, in that they 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 haven't even created or started to create 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 the products they've already promised, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 and now we're talking about adding on 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 another layer, more tiers, more products, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 that also they don't have any plan for how 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 they're going to make them. There's no 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 artwork from Lisa frank, there's no colors 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 picked out, there's just a concept 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 in their minds, that's all that exists. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 And as we go through this, you'll realize 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 they didn't even calculate the financials 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 on how much all this was going to cost, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 or if they did calculate the financials, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 they didn't care, they were like, we'll 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 figure it out some how. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 And then Peter said something that stuck 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 in the minds of Backers for the rest 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 of the campaign. This is what he said, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 "Ultimately, whatever we do and don't 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 figure out, these products will be 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 available for individual purchase before 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 the end of the year". The end of 2017. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Kickstarter Backers will just be getting 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 them first. They didn't. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 So you remember how I said they were 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 adding all of these new products, and 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 either they didn't calculate the 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 financials to figure out how much they 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 were gonna cost or they did know, but they 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 "oh we'll get the money from somewhere" 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 they kinda figured out how they might get 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 the money. They tapped into a creator 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 named Wengie, now back then, there was 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 a big boom around creators who did DIY 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 challenge kinds of videos. I'm gonna show 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 you some of Wengie's thumbnails. She got 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 tens of millions of views on these videos 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Wengie was huge in this space, especially 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 with kids. At the time, Wengie only had 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 6 million official subscribers 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 on her channel, but she had way more 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 watching her. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Wengie: Hey guys, it's Wengie Welcome back 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 but today I'm here to make a special 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 awesome announcement, I'm so excited 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 to announce this, like I can't even right 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 now. I'm going to be collaborating with 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Lisa Frank and Glamour Dolls on an 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 eyeshadow palette, like What?! for those 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 of you who haven't heard about Lisa Frank 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 she is so amazing. She is, like, literally my childhood. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 And her art is all about rainbows, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 unicorns, colorful, like 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 everything I'm about. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Like, her art is my aesthetic, but 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 the most amazing thing is 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 you guys get to be involved as well 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 because you guys are my Wingy-con fam 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 and if I'm going to work on my first 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 huge collaboration, it's got to be with you guys. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 So, I really want you guys to help contribute to our creative. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Choose the colors with us, choose the designs of the pallet. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 And we've partnered with Glamour Dolls Make-up 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 to make this come alive. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Because they are a high quality, vegan, cruelty-free brand. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Not only that, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 they make super affordable makeup, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 because I want this collaboration to be affordable to everyone. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 And the great thing about this whole process 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 is this was Internationally available no matter where you are, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 you can pre-order this palette. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 I'm not a hundred percent on this timeline, but it seems 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 like this is when they added more tiers. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 They added a seventy dollar tier, a one hundred dollar tier, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 and two hundred dollar tier, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 but what they added that was the most important thing 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 that I think really turned everything, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 was the additional of the Trapper Keeper palettes. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 These were going to be six pan eye-shadow palettes that 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 looked legit like a trapper keeper. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 No one had ever seen anything like this before and the 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 nostalgia overload. Oh my gosh. People lost their minds when 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 they were thinking, "Oh my gosh, a trapper keeper 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 eye-shadow palette, I need to have this in my life!" 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 So, along with Wengie trapper keeper palette 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 there would be a naturally glam palette and a bold a bright palette. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 All adorned with Lisa Frank artwork. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Just an hour before the kickstarted ended, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Glamour Dolls made another promise. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 They said that everybody, thanks to their participation, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 anybody that participated in the Kickstarter was going to get a goody bag. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 What was in the goody bag? No idea - no one ever got it. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 But they promised, they said "There's gonna be a goody bag added, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 thank you so much for backing this project.": 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 According to the community, at the time, it looked like before 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Wengie launched her video, they were at about 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 two hundred fifty thousand dollars in pledges. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 After Wendgie launched her video, they reached their peak 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 at three hundred seventy thousand dollars and almost six thousand people. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 That was an average of about sixty two dollars spent per backer. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 The one hundred dollar tier got everything from the collection. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 And the two hundred dollar tier got two sets of everything in the collection. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Now me not having a ton of money, at the time, and being a procrastinator 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 I waited until the last minute to back this campaign. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 So I joined in at the very last moment in the very last day of the campaign 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 at the seventy dollar level, so I paid seventy dollars plus five dollar shipping. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 And I will tell you, I was most excited about those dang trapper keeper palettes. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 So excited about those things! 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 And I was excited, after I saw the drawing I was excited about the nail polishes. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 They looked really cool. I'd never seen anything quite like that. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 And I wanted to review it for the channel, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 I was excited to talk to you all about it. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Was it good quality along with being really cute? 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 I wanted to let you know. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 [music] 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Then something really weird happened. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Because, at the time, I was really in to subscription boxes, I got a ton of them. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 I got my Ipsy bag, and I got this in it. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Yes, I still have it. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 This is the Lisa Frank blush brush. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 What? 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Why-why am I getting this in an Ipsy bag? 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Let me go ahead and show you, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 it is super super freaking cute. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 there is a little line here, where the image connects, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 but overall it's just a very cute design. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 I will show you though that the, ya know, it is a little wiggly, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 it's not great quality, but at the time, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 I was more just confused. We are all super confused 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 on what is happening and why the Lisa Frank blush brushes are in Ipsy. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 You guys! Thank you very much." 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Guys, I'm completely serious, I had the trapper keeper, I had the folders, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 I had the pencils, I had the little, like pencil holder. I had everything - 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 everything Lisa Frank. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 When I was in fourth grade, that was like, the only way to be cool was to have 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 multicolored rainbow cheetahs on your trapper keeper. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 And now I am twentyfour yearold woman with a rainbow unicorn brush and I love it. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 But it does make sense, it will make sense 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 I'm gonna get there. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 About a month after the kickstarter ended, there was a red flag. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Besides the red flag of the blush brush being in Ipsy bags and 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 them not telling us that this could happen, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 this was another major red flag that we probably should've seen. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 What they posted to the kickstarter was basically about lessons that they 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 had learned so far. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 This is what they said: 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 "Lisa knows how much we've got in the works, but her advice was to 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 stop and focus on a few things with high production quality rather than 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 trying to do everything at once. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Our friends at Kickstarter gave us some very similar advice- 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 this is a marathon, not a sprint. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 We've taken it to heart, and stopped, gone back to the lab and made sure that the 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 next few weeks are going to run smoothly and be everything that we promised. " 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 So ever body, Lisa Frank, Kickstarter, every body's telling Glamour Dolls 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 you're doing too much. Stop. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 You have made too many promises and you are going to just lose everything 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 slow down, figure out how you're going to 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 just get a couple of high quality products out and then worry about the rest, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 but the thing is; is on the Kickstarter page, it had said 'estimated deliver of 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 September of 2017, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 So we are now the beginning of May. June, July, August, Semptember, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 that's four months until the estimated deliver date of the products. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Now, I didn't know at the time a lot about production, I had no idea, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 so I didn't know that was freaking impossible. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 [scoff[ 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 I don't think a lot of us knew that that was freaking impossible, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 but it was freaking impossible. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 But Glamour Dolls didn't tell us it was freaking impossible, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 oh no, they made us think it was we were getting our stuff in September 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 because, remember, at this point, they've got thirteen products 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 that they've promised us, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 including counting each nail polish as one product. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 And then, on top of that, they had promised us 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 that they would add in a Lisa Frank designed nail file, so that made it 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 fourteen products that they needed to give us, in four months. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 [eh-eh] 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Because we didn't realize as Backers, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 that Lisa was designing all of this stuff from scratch. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Why in the world, she was not using existing artwork, I have no freaking clue. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 I still don't know why she didn't use existing artwork. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 And in hindsight, this is why hindsight is twenty - twenty. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Glamour Dolls had to have know there was no way in hell 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 we were getting this stuff by September but they didn't tell us that. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 They even went so far as people saying it was their birthday in September 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 and they were so excited to get Glamour Doll's products for their birthday 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 and Glamour Doll's like "yaaayy, we're so excited for you to get them too!" 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 They knew darn well those people were not getting those products 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 for their birthday. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 In May of 2017, the surveys continued 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 They started really asking us our opinions on how we wanted things to be done. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 And we started seeing actual product coming together 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 and they sent a picture of this unicorn lippy- it was a lip balm 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 and it was a unicorn, and it was so freaking cute in this little 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 empty white box. Of course it was a white box, because Lisa hadn't designed the 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 artwork yet, but they were like, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 "yes look at this draft of this unicorn, it's so cute!" 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 And then they sent over the picture of the vegan leather make-up bag 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 also so cute! Really cute little zipper, that was like a rainbow, and it was white, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 of course, because again, Lisa hadn't designed the artwork yet. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 We also got a final look at the upcoming crease brush, now keep in mind, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 that the blush brush that was already sent out to Ipsy people, and this 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 crease brush, were only going to be shipped to the highest tier Backers. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 The 100 dollar level, and the 200 dollar level. This is going to be important 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 in just a moment. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 In June, we get another in hindsight red-flag, because Glamour Dolls 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 opened up another way to buy items from the collection from a site called 'backer kit' 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 and on Backer Kit, you could order product individually to be added to your box 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 when all of your stuff shipped. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 It was also a way for people who hadn't been part of the kickstarter 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 to get on the action and order the products. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 If you did happen to order the angled blush brush from Backer Kit 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 those blush brushes did go out 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 but the 100 dollar and 200 dollar people, still didn't have a blush brush. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Unless they got it in their Ipsy bag, then they had a blush brush. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 And if they were 200 dollar tear, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 they were gonna end up with 3 blush brushes by the end of it, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 if they also got it in Ipsy. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 And in June, Backers got a sneak peak of a single eye shadow 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 and a bronzer - we are almost there 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 of the big debacle with the bronzer and the eye shadow. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 That's a whole 'nother thing - we're almost there. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Throughout June we also got sneaks of the Trapper Keeper palate - 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 who are so excited! The draft of the actual product packaging. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 We also got sneaks of the matte mousse swatches, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 we also got information about what the nail polish colors were gonna look like, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 I mean they are giving us pieces and pieces, and pieces, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 of 'this is coming, this is coming, this is what we're working on.' 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 They really did show us a lot! 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 But one thing you'll notice, if you listen carefully to this video 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 of this nail polish swatches, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 is somebody in the background says something about Hot Topic. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 [inaudible] 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 That's gonna be another piece. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 [laughs] 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Hang tight. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 They also said that everything was still on track for shipping in September 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 in three months! 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 How are they telling us this? 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 They lied to us! They outright lied to us! They had to have known, darn well, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 we weren't getting shit in September. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Because at this point nobody had even gotten on this digital background yet, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 that should've been the easiest thing to do. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 You have a piece of art, you send it out as a background,-you just digitally send it 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 you don't even have to mail anything! 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 you don't even have to create a physical product! 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 It's literally just a piece of art e-mailed, that's it! 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 They didn't even make that yet. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Here comes another red flag. Are you ready? 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 In July, they started selling that crease brush that was supposed to go to the 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 top tier Backers, they started selling it on their website for 4.99 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 and according to Popsugar, it sold out immediately 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 at the beginning of July, and then restocked in the middle of July 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 So this is what I think happened, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 because, of course, you can't sell out and then restock two weeks later 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 from a true sell out. You have to order more! They didn't sell out! 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 What they did, I think, is they had a number of extra brushes 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 beyond what people had, what they had, you know, allocated to send out. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 So they sold those brushes, and then they realized they were selling out so fast 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 they sold the backer's brushes. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 I guess, figuring they would just make more. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 And they would just send more out later, I don't know. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 So while all of this has happened, Glamour Dolls is continually and 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 constantly involving the Backers in the development process 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 of everything. We're watching everything go down, and I will honestly tell you... 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 I kinda tuned out, I was like, "I don't even freakin' care" like, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 I don't care what thin- I just want the products! Like, I participated 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 in a couple of surveys, but after that, I just stopped reading e-mails. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 I was like, I don't care! I don't care about all of this, it's too much! 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 It's just- send me the products! 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 I don't care what ya'll decide. It's j- it's fine - it's whatever. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 So I kinda tuned out at this point. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 But a lot of people were very invested in all of these choices. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 The Backers even started arguing amongst each other, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 where some people were being a little harsh about the designs, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 like with the trapper keeper palate, saying that the mirror was too small 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 and can you make the mirror bigger, people were complaining that there 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 were too many unicorns. Like, and then some people, just being like, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 jus-just-what did you expect, it's Lisa Frank. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Just let them do the thing. It's fine. It's fine. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 People were just getting frustrated and just started arguing back and forth 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 a little bit. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Jessica, the co-founder with Peter even came in and was like, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 "hey ya'll, you need to speak nicely to each other, like, we're a community 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 we're working on this together, cause it's starting to get a little heated." 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Now we're in August of 2017, one month before we're supposed to be getting 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 our products shipped. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 We get another shot of the bronzer, this time with swatches. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 this is what they said, "We specifically developed this formula so it's universally 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 flattering, making it the perfect shade for all of our dolls." 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Unless the dolls are deeper than that color, I-I don't know. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 The thing is, you really can't make a universal shade of bronzer 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 because what works for someone very deep skinned, is not gonna work 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 for someone with very pale skin. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 You just can't do that. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 All you can do is shoot for the middle. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 So just saying that they made it for all of their dolls, just really was kind of 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 insulting to some of the Backers. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 The most interested update, i['m gonna go ahead, put it on the screen 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 for you, but I'll read the most interesting part, they said, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 "we know we've been little quiet over the last few weeks, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 but trust us, we have so many fun and exciting updates to share 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 with you guys. The Trapper Keeper palate artwork should be finalized 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 any day now. " Any day now. "And we literally cannot wait to show you 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 what it looks like! This collaboration has been long time in the works, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 and we know that in the end, it'll be worth all the blood, sweat 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 and glitter tears that we put into it." 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 There's no mention of any shipping delays, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 There's just - we're getting our products. All of them - in September apparently. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 [laughs] And the reason why we know this is because they keep showing us things, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 they keep showing us that things are almost done! 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 We got a sneak peak of the shades that were gonna be in the bold and bright palat 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 we also got an explanation about the digital artwork that was supposed 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 to be going out, and what they basically said was that they wanted to start 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 with the hardest products first, like the trapper keeper palates, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 and then work they way to the easiest stuff which would be the digital background. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 In mid-August they put out a statement that the Wengie palate was almost finished 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 and that they would update when they had an exact delivery schedule. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 So it's getting towards the end of August 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 and the people with the September birthdays are starting to realize 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 I'm not getting this for my birthday, am I? 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 So there was a backer that said "It's obvious that all the 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 September birthday Backers are not receiving their make-up next month 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 it's almost September, and not many products and designs are finalized 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 as much of a bummer this may be, getting Lisa Frank make-up 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 for Christmas, will still be really cool. I hope it's ready by then." 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 It's not gonna be ready. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 [music[ 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 So September finally arrives and everybody is like okay 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 we're gonna get our announcement that everything is gonna be shipped 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 but we did not get that! 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 What we got was a sneak of the shade of the lip mousse, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 and no mention of the fact that things are supposed to be shipping right now 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 like, they just didn't even say anything. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Comment after comment, people are like "what the hell? You're showing 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 me a shade of the lip mousse, how are you still making this?! 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 We're supposed to be getting them shipped this month!?" 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 So, after that post, everybody was pissed. Everybody was sounding off in the comments 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 how mad they were, so the CEO had to re-group and he ended up putting out 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 a very lengthy statement. I will put it all on the screen for you. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 He sincerely apologizes for gaps in communication 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 and disappointment, and he says that if for any reason Backers are not happy 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 that they can send an email and they will issue a refund immediately. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 followed with quote, "we need to stress to all of you that you will be receiving 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 the products that you paid for no matter what." 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 And I really genuinely don't think that people asked for refunds because of this 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 because they saw things that they really wanted and they knew if they asked 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 for a refund, they weren't going to get any of it. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 And they still had faith that at some point, this was going to happen. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Maybe it wasn't going to happen right now, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 but, if I take my money out I'm not getting all this stuff. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 And if I do want it, I'm gonna have to wait for it to go to retailers 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 and I'm gonna have to pay retail price for it- i'm gon-I 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 I'm gonna have to pay a lot more money 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 for it, when if I had just been patient, I would've gotten everything that I wanted. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 The post continued with statements about threats that they were getting 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 across social media- and they said that the threats are unnecessary 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 and if they want a refund, just let them know. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 And they also said, about the shipping delay, they said it was just an estimated 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 shipping delivery for September. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Quote, "We started all these products from scratch with you at the concept phase 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 and this is our first time working with a license so there are new steps 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 and things to learn. Hiccups have ranged from trying to find the right 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 fulfillment agents, to some of the packaging samples we received 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 not being up to our standards. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 We were clear from the beginning and in previous updates 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 that things might get delayed as the process played out. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 We realize that September will be over within a few short weeks, which means 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 we will unfortunately not be -be on target with our hopeful September estimation." 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 This is a bold face lie! It is a straight up lie! 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 They never once in any of the updates told any body that there could possibly 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 be a delay. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 In fact, they reassured customers that everything was on track for September 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 They lied! 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Regarding communication, they said it hasn't been the best, but they're 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 going to do better in the future. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 And about people getting the brushes from Ipsy, 'member, I said 'hold on'? 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 we're gonna get to it - I'm getting to it right now. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 They said, "The only products from this collection that are on the market 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 are the Lisa Frank blush brush and the Lisa Frank blending brush. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Those were developed six months before the kickstarted, along with the eye shadow 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 and the travel bronzer for a specific customer." 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 That specific customer was Ipsy, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 "And were offered during this campaign as an addition perk, or add on, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 so that you can truly have everything in the collection. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Beyond that, we can assure you that anything being developed 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 through kickstarter will be in your hands first." 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 What they don't mention in this, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 was the update where they said that 3500 Backers, the first 3500 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 were also going to get the crease slash blending brush. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 They've conveniently forgotten about that. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 That actually never gets mentioned again. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 When Backers pointed out that Glam Dolls raised ten times more than their 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 original goal of 30 thousand dollars, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 they said that it didn't make things easier, it actually made things more 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 complicated, because that's when they started adding extra products. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Well who's dang fault was that!? 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 This is also the first mention of hand painted items. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Why are there hand painted items in this collection? 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 I have no idea. I don't know why they thought this was a good idea. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 We'll talk about that. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 They also mention, that of course, because the Backers went in 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 and helped them fund the products that they will get everything 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 at a cheaper price than what they would be sold at retail. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Then they breakdown everything that they say is happening right now 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 including, they say, specifically 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 that all the products have been finalized 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 and physical production samples have been approved, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 but they do say that they're keeping 3 products blank 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 so that community can vote on what kind of artwork is going to 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 go on to those 3 products. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 They also promise that on October 1st, they're going to ship out 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 those 4 products that were made before the kickstarter started; 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 the 2 brushes, the eyeshadow, and the bronzer. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 They'll go out to the 100 and 200 dollar Backers. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 As well as anybody that added them on. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 They also say this: "In addition to the press, we were reached out to by 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 a few major retailors, all of whom require time and energy to onboard 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 with. There have been many sleepless nights and it has been a journey 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 as we try to build our team, and turn this opportunity in to a solid foundation" 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 I don't think we knew what this meant at the time, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 but this meant that they had two retailors they were talking to 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 to sell these products. Hot Topic and Dolls Kill. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 The letter then goes on to pull at the heartstrings 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 of the Backers, to get everybody to calm down, and be patient, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 and be nice to them. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 They -s- give shoutouts to the staff members and the interns 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 and statements like, "Jessica and I are both people too" 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 And they mention Jessica neglecting her own wedding because she's 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 working so hard on this project. ] 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 They also talk about Peter missing friends and family members' major life events 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 due to trying to make this product happen. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 What we like to think that if you were able to see our day to day, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 those of you who feel the need to be critical, would be a little less so. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 And this is when there's a complete tone-shift in the comment section 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 underneath the project. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 The comments are so kind, and so patient, there's even people saying 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 that they expected the products to ship after September, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 because a lot of kickstarters ship late 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 which I found isn't necessarily true, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 but people were really nice to Peter 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 after his post. Just like, yeah you are human, let's give you some time 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 I can see that you're trying, like, you're doing your best 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 and things are coming. It'll be soon. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Everybody is just being super super nice to them. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 But one backer, Ariel, she really summed things up, but in a very 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 very polite way. She asked questions like, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 i-she wanted to know the dates of the extra promises, like the Glamour Doll's 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Gypsy eyeliner pencil, the vintage Lisa Frank item that they were promised. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 The nail file, and the digital background, and of course, her questions went 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 completely unanswered. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 On September 21st, they said, Thank you so much, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 the eyeshadow and the bronzer production have been completed. We have them. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 They say, as a huge thank you for supporting us throughout this journey, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 we've decided to ship out the orders early for those of you who backed a tier 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 that includes them, or added them to their pledge afterward in backerkit. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 But you and I both know, that this is not on time. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 October 1st is technically late, because the estimated ship time was September 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 and there shipping them in October, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 but they're using this language on purpose to manipulate the Backers 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 and make them feel good that they're getting things early. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Because what I think they meant, is that they had intended to send out the packages 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 when they were all completed, but they're sending these particular items because 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 they're ready out before the rest of the products are ready. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Glamour Dolls makes it sound like this is - like- a big reward, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 this is something we're doing for you because we care about you - 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 No, this is something that you owe to people. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 This is not - this is not a - a luxury. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 This is not a super kind thing to do. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 This is just what you should be doing. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Then things switched with the digital background. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Basically what they were saying, was that they wanted to give an update 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 on the digital background and they said that Lisa had some concerns 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 about her artwork getting stolen. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 I don't know, I think if anyone wanted to steal Lisa Frank's artwork 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 it'd be pretty easy to do, but I digress. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 So anyway, they were worried about this digital background 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 being stolen and then put on things illegally, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 so they didn't want to do a digital background, instead 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Lisa was going to go in to her vault and she found these vintage postcards. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 And these vintage postcards were going to be shipped out instead of the digital 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 background to anybody that pledged 5 dollars or more. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 So every single person that pledged was going to get one of these. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 And 25 people would have one that was handsigned personal signed by Lisa herself 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 This postcard was supposed to go out once all of the orders, all the products, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 had been made and the final orders were being shipped. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Then they dropped drawing designs of the caps of the nail polishes 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 and I was thinking as I was looking at this, I was like didn't they just say 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 like a week ago, that everything was already designed, that they 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 already had all the mockups? 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Apparently that was a lie. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 And would you be shocked to learn 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 that the shipping of the bronzers doesn't happen on October 1st? 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 'Cause it doesn't happen. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 In October, the community is sent a poll for the design for the vegan make-up bag 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 they had a choice of zoomer and zorbit, who are aliens, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 dancing dolphins, or Sky the Pegasus. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 We also saw the first physical samples of the Naturally Glam 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 and the bold and bright palates, so freaking cute. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 The community loses their minds over these palettes, comments are lighting up 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 about people so excited to get these palettes in their hands. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 And like I said, the eyeshadow and bronzers, that stuff did not 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 end up shipping on October 1st, because Glamour Dolls says that 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 they were stuck in customs.. for two weeks. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 They said in an update, being as today is 10 26, we expect the product to arrive 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 to the shipping facility and ship to you on October 31st. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 And therefor, you should expect the makeup there on your doorstep during the first 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 week of November. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Are you surprised that this did actually happen? 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Me too. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 [laughs] 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 In November we get more information 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 about the two brushes, the eyeshadow, and the bronzer. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 They talk about how the products had already been in production 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 when the kickstarter started, but where Peter shot himself in the foot 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 was because in May he said that the Backers would be getting the products 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 first. And he should've known not to say that because he knew that they were 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 gonna end up in Ipsy bags before the 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Backers got them, but he didn't tell anybody that. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 He just lied to everybody instead and then when we found out they were in Ipsy bags 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 we naturally freaked out. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Because not only were the blush brushes in the April Ipsy bags, but the bronzers 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 were in the November Ipsy bags! 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 "Oh my gosh, is this a Lisa Frank? [gasp] Glamour Dolls bitten and bronze 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 matte bronzer!? Awhile ago we got a Lisa Frank brush in our Ipsy bag, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 I wonder if this is from the same line. I'm not really expecting much from this 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 bronzer, because I feel like it's just more on the gimmicky side, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 But I hope that it works amazingly well. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Color is really promising! 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 It's not too warm and it's not too cool. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 I'm gonna swatch it out. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 This feels a little bit powdery. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Ooh, it actually feels really nice and smooth on the skin. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Granted, I did just put that hand cream on so I don't really know what that says 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 but it feels really buttery-ish on the skin. Feels nice! 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 The color is pretty good too. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 If you're fair though, I don't think this is going to work for you 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 because it's showing up on my really tan hand, so if you're fair, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 I don't think this bronzer is for you. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 But it's really F'in cute. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 I wish the actual packaging looked as cute as the box, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 but I mean, it's still pretty cute" 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 As a backer, what we were thinking was that Glamour Dolls took our money 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 from the Kickstarter and made these bronzers and made the brushes and made the 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 eyeshadows with our money and then sold them to Ipsy. Which is actually not what 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 happened. I put all of the timelines together and it turns out they did not use 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Kickstarter money in order to fund these products. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 They had used a different website. It was called: "Kickfurther". 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Kickfurther - it still exists. It's kind of like Kickstarter, but instead 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 of backing a project and getting product, you back a project and you get interest 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 on your investment. It's basically a way that small businesses 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 can fund the production of something and then pay the investors back. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 So I went over to the Glamour Dolls' Kickfurther page and what I found out was 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 that they had done a Kickfurther campaign to produce the blush brushes. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 They raised $166,000 and they paid those Backers back about two weeks after 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 the Kickstarter ended in April of 2017. They ran a second Kickfurther campaign 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 that was running about the same time as the Kickstarter campaign was running. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 It was from Feb 13th of 2017 to March 6th of 2017. This was to fund the 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 production of the eyeshadow and the bronzer. Because with the money 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 they got from the blush brush they were also able to make the crease brush. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 There's a lot of business-y language over there and I'll be honest, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 I don't understand a lot of what they're talking about. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 But I will tell you what I did understand. So, he's basically saying people are 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 concerned that they're not going to get their money back. And he's reassuring them 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 and basically saying they've got these two purchase orders - they're very very 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 blurry, there's stuff that's knocked out of it, but we know now in hindsight that 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 the brand that ordered the highlight and the bronzer was Ipsy. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 You can kind of make out in the very blurry paperwork that Ipsy paid $378,750 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 for the bronzer. Same for the eyeshadows. And that was for 757,500 units of each 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 product. But! They were not going to pay that money 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 until the product was delivered. That's why they needed the Kickfurther 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 people- was to actually make the products. Once they actually delivered them, then 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 they would get the money from Ipsy and they could pay the Kickfurther Backers 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 back. So here's the math broken down: 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Glamour Dolls raises $313,000 from the Kickfurther. They spend that money to 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 make the bronzer and the eyeshadow. Ipsy pays them two payments of $378,750. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Which is $757,500 total for those two products. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Then they have to pay interest to the Kickfurther Backers. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 They pay out $354,000 about to those Backers. That's $41,000 in profit for the 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Kickfurther people, but that gives Glamour Dolls about $400,000 from 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 those two products from the Ipsy deal. Plus they still have that $350,000 from 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 the Kickstarter in order to make products. So what happened to all of that money - 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 where did they spend it?! I have it- I know exactly where 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 they spent it! I have to... but we have to get there. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 So remember: the Backers over on the Kickstarter have no idea any of this 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Kickfurther stuff was happening. And Glamour Dolls had no obligation 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 to share it - it wasn't our business. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 But this was happening behind the scenes. In mid November, the Backers at the 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 $100 and $200 level, as well as people who added on the bronzer or 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 the eyeshadow are starting to get their products in the mail. Remember they 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 had ordered these back between February and April - it's now November and they've 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 finally got some products. And they also have their vintage 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Lisa Frank postcard. Glamour Dolls seemed a little bit "Oooo" 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 about that because the postcards technically weren't supposed to go out yet. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 The postcards were supposed to be in the final package. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 So what they told the Backers was: if you got a postcard in this order, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 you'll get a second one in your next order. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 That's the order where we're going to ship you out everything. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 And this is when Glamour Dolls is forced to admit that they are selling the 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Lisa Frank branded stuff - the stuff that's supposed to be in the hands of the 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Backers first- over at Hot Topic and Dolls Kill. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Because people found the products available over on Hot Topic! 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 But they spin it - they're SUCH manipulative liars, I swear. This is 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 so awful. This is what they said: 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 "The eyeshadow that leaked on Hot Topic that some of you eagle eyes caught (we are 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 so impressed!) was supposed to be a teaser promo for what's to come. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 And we were 100% not aware that they would be breaking the news so soon. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 We're of course THRILLED to have such an amazing partnership, but we truly had 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 had no idea they were launching this promo so early. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Now that the cat's out of the bag, so to speak, we'd love to formally introduce you 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 to the new single eyeshadow shades in the Lisa Frank x Glamour Dolls line." 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 followed by swatches of two shadows, not one. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 This second single shadow was never a part of the original list of products. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Why are they making more products? It's because they could make money off 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 of Hot Topic customers. That's why they made more. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Because apparently they need more money. But then it gets so, so much worse. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 This was when I went on my Twitter and I was like, "This is f*cking ridiculous!" 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 If you were following me on Twitter and you saw me freaking out on Twitter 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 about what I was finding, this is what I had found. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Because the postcards. The postcards. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Ok, I know it's just a postcard, but it's wild. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 So the postcards were coming damaged. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Some of them were ripped, some of them were creased, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 people were saying they got a signed one and it was ripped and they wanted 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 another one, but then they were worried they wouldn't get another signed one and 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 how could the signed one be ripped? It's a vintage postcard - these can't be reproduced. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 But was it? Because people noticed that there was a QR code on the postcard. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 These are supposed to be vintage and there was a QR code... 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 ...on the postcard. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 And I sh*t you not this is what Glamour Dolls said: 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 "QR codes actually came out in the 90's, if ya can believe it. These postcards 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 are right from the vault." 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 So, I had to look that up because I was like, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 "Are you being for serious right now?" (laughs) 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 He's right - the QR codes did come out in the 90's. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 But nobody had any ability to use them until smartphones had cameras. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 According to the article on Microsoft, "In 2002, Sharp introduced the first 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 cellphone with a QR scanner and competing cell phone companies followed suit. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Eventually everyone who owned a smartphone possessed a QR scanner in their pocket." 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 So at the very earliest, the postcards were 15 years old. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 But I will tell you there is a 0% chance- a 0% chance- that these postcards 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 were 15 years old. And the reason why was because the QR code 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 conveniently took you to a Lisa Frank app. Which definitely did not exist in 2002. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 I found the two apps that she had available. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 The apps at the time were the "Lisa Frank Pick 'n Share", developed 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 in 2012 per this Buzzfeed article. Apparently it sucked according to them. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 The other app was called "Zoom 'n Color" which launched in February of 2013. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 So unless somebody calls something vintage that is five years old, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 these sh*t are not vintage. At all. Not even close. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 But it gets worse. It gets worse! Not only weren't they vintage, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 they weren't signed! 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Some people were looking at their their signature because a lot of people 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 in the group seemed to have gotten signatures. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 There were 1700 people who should have gotten these postcards because they 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 pledged that $100 tier or more. At least 1700 people. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 But it seemed like almost everybody, if not everybody, commenting was 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 getting one of these 25 rare signed postcards. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Something was going on. There was a woman named, Calli, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 who didn't get her postcard yet and was seeing all these people commenting 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 that they'd gotten a signed one and she was like, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 "Oh I guess I'm not going to get a signed one with my order." 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 And Glamour Dolls was like, "Yeah, you do have a chance because maybe not 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 all the 25 have been sent out. We're not sure because Lisa sent them directly 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 to the warehouse and we don't know which ones went into the boxes." 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 And Calli says, "Yes!! Definitely still a chance. Realistically we won't 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 know who received the 25 postcards until they're all sent out once all the 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 products are through production and shipped out. Talk about suspense!!" 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 But we know how many of them were signed. They were all signed. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Every single one of them were signed. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Because thanks to tips from people that were commenting, they said well, there's 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 pictures of the cards on Instagram that people are posting. The signatures are 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 absolutely 100% identical down to the size of the commas and the sizes of the 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 loops and the extra little dot in the smiley face. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 These were photocopied. Every single one had a Lisa Frank signature on it. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 I even found an unboxing of one of these. This was from a channel called, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 "Beauty Pop". And here was her reaction to getting the postcard: 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 "So first off there is this little card- it's really, really cute. It has a 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Lisa Frank, like, illustration on it. I really like it. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 And it says, "Lots of love! XO.... I don't...the team...or something maybe... 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 I don't know what that says. That signature is kind of hard to read. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 So it's this little postcard. It's really really cute. I think I'm 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 going to save this because I really like the art that's on it." 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 (Laughing) She didn't even realize that it was Lisa Frank's signature because it 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 doesn't look like Lisa's Fran- Lisa Frank's signature. We see the Lisa Frank 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 name on everything and it looks like a signature. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 That's not her real signature apparently, (laughing) so she didn't even realize 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 that's what it was supposed to be. (Laugh) Which I get! I totally get! 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 But it just goes to show how the signature was of zero value. Absolutely zero value. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 One person said her eyeshadow came shattered. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 And then a backer named, Denisha, was super disappointed and she said she lost 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 all complete hope that anything would work out for her. She said, "I was 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 happy to get one of the signed cards [because at this point everybody thinks 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 that they're hand signed], but I'm already not enthused about this makeup 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 working for me. The eyeshadow is beautiful and I might use it as a highlighter, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 but the "bronzer" is a complete waste of time. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 I really don't think based on the poll winners, etc. that this line will work 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 out for melanated Backers." Even Beauty Pop, who is closer to my 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 skin tone, swatches the bronzer and pretty much says the same thing. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 So the postcard was a complete scam. And it doesn't seem like Glamour Dolls knew 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 that, but Lisa had to have known that. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Where did Glamour Dolls get the information that 1. these were vintage 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 and 2. that they would be hand signed because neither of those things were true. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Did Lisa lie to them? Did Glamour Dolls know it and lie to the Backers? 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 I would dare to say Lisa probably misled Glamour Dolls. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 But it's Glamour Dolls fault for not even seeing the postcards and verifying what 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 they were before giving false promises to the Backers. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 So at this point there starts to be kind of a split between the backers. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Some people are really excited and some people are starting to get 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 really disappointed. There's a backer named Lizzie and she says, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 "Honestly if I'd known about the other shades not being available through the 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Kickstarter when this whole thing started, it wouldn't have bothered me. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 What really irritates me is that we keep finding out about these things being sent 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 out in Ipsy bags, Hot Topic suddenly selling items from this collection, etc. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 on our own and THEN we hear from you about it once someone call you out and questions 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 It's important to be up front and open with your Backers, so they feel like 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 they can trust you." 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 The problem is that they weren't trustworthy. That's the problem. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 And that's what a lot of the Backers were learning. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 And beyond that, people were really disappointed
