0:00:07.086,0:00:11.086 It was a feast like Egypt had [br]never seen before. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 The warrior god Set and his wife, [br]the goddess Nephtys, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 decorated an extravagant hall [br]for the occasion, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 with a beautiful wooden chest [br]as the centerpiece. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 They invited all the most important gods,[br]dozens of lesser deities, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 and foreign monarchs. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 But no one caused as big a stir as Set and[br]Nephtys’s older brother Osiris, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 the god who ruled all of Egypt and [br]had brought prosperity to everyone. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 Set announced a game – 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 whoever could fit perfectly in the chest[br]could have it as a gift. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 One by one, the guests clambered in,[br]but no one fit. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 Finally, it was Osiris’s turn. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 As he lay down, everyone could see[br]it was a perfect fit— 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 another win for the god [br]who could do no wrong. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 Then Set slammed the lid down with Osiris[br]still inside, sealed it shut, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 and tossed it into the Nile. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 The chest was a coffin. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 Set had constructed it specifically [br]to trap his brother 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 and planned the party to lure him into it. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 Set had long been jealous [br]of his brother’s successful reign, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 and hoped to replace him [br]as the ruler of all Egypt. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 The Nile bore the coffin out to sea and [br]it drifted for many days 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 before washing ashore near Byblos, [br]where a great cedar grew around it. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 The essence of the god within gave the [br]tree a divine aura, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 and when the king of Byblos noticed it, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 he ordered the tree cut down[br]and brought to his palace. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 Unbeknownst to him, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 the coffin containing Egypt’s most [br]powerful god was still inside. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 Set’s victory seemed complete, but he [br]hadn’t counted on his sisters. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 Set’s wife Nephtys was also his sister, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 while their other sister, the goddess [br]Isis, was married to their brother Osiris. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 Isis was determined to find Osiris, and[br]enlisted Nephtys’s help behind Set’s back. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 The two sisters took the shape of [br]falcons and travelled far and wide. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 Some children who had seen the coffin[br]float 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 by pointed them to the palace of Byblos. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 Isis adopted a new disguise and [br]approached the palace. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 The queen was so charmed by the [br]disguised goddess 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 that she entrusted her with nursing [br]the baby prince. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 Isis decided to make the child immortal [br]by bathing him in flame. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 When the horrified queen came upon[br]this scene, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 Isis revealed herself and [br]demanded the tree. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 When she cut the coffin from the trunk[br]and opened it, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 Osiris was dead inside. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 Weeping, she carried his body back to [br]Egypt and hid it in a swamp, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 while she set off in search of a means [br]of resurrecting him. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 But while she was gone, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 Set found the body and cut into [br]many pieces, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 scattering them throughout Egypt. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 Isis had lost Osiris for the second time,[br]but she did not give up. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 She searched all over the land,[br]traveling in a boat of papyrus. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 One by one, she tracked down the[br]parts of her husband’s dismembered body 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 in every province of Egypt, [br]holding a funeral for each piece. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 At long last, she had recovered[br]every piece but one – 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 his penis, which a fish [br]in the Nile had eaten. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 Working with what she had, Isis [br]reconstructed and revived her husband. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 But without his penis, [br]Osiris was incomplete. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 He could not remain among the living, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 could not return to his old [br]position as ruler of Egypt. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 Instead, he would have to rule over Duat,[br]the realm of the dead. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 Before he went, though, he and Isis [br]conceived a son to bear Osiris’s legacy – 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 and one day, avenge him.
