0:00:01.706,0:00:05.700 Hi everyone we’re live here with[br]Damon Rose from BBC Ouch 0:00:05.700,0:00:09.172 And we’re just gonna have a little[br]chat with him and share with you all 0:00:09.172,0:00:10.964 -Hi Damon[br]Hello 0:00:10.964,0:00:15.379 -Thanks for joining us today[br]-Thanks for coming to our country 0:00:15.379,0:00:19.459 Yes —It’s all brighter for it. [br][Laughter][br] 0:00:19.750,0:00:21.799 Thank you, it’s quite lovely actually 0:00:21.799,0:00:27.751 So, we can just get right into it? Maybe[br]you could tell us how you started BBC Ouch 0:00:27.751,0:00:35.752 How did we get it started? Oh, it all [br]started with a meeting some years ago. 0:00:35.752,0:02:25.095 [inaudible] 0:02:28.505,0:02:32.090 I wouldn't be telling you but I am[br]Good, so how did the name come to you? 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 The name literally, I know people [br]say this, came to me in the shower. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 One morning we had, oh goodness,[br]the idea of coming up with a name 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 for a disability website,[br]is a bit of a nightmare 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 for any kind of disability project,[br]We desperately wanted, forgive me, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 but we didn't want anything with the word[br]"able" in it, for instance, because 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 it was such a, people do it a lot.[br]Every single disability project 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 is "able" this, "able" that, work "able",[br]media "able", radio "able". 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 Whatever, you know.[br]So I was keen not to go through that 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 and I wanted something that had a bit of[br]attitude as well. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 I'm trying to think of other things[br]we went through. Some of the ideas 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 are probably worth dwelling on a bit.[br]Some of the names we came up with 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 as we went along, I remember at one point,[br]when our working title was 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 Disability Noodle, I don;t know where that 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 came from. [br][Laughter] 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 Someone in the marketing[br]department once decided 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 that a good name for it might be[br]"I Dance to my Own Song" 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 and you sit there and you think,[br]that's a bit floaty 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 It's a bit, I don't know, pretentious[br]or something 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 [Laughter][br]Don't know how that one came about 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 but people come at disability from all [br]sorts of different angles, don't they. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 Clearly. [br]Someone even suggested that "Minefield" 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 might be a really good name for Ouch[br]because people think of it as, you know, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 you can't say this, you can't say that.[br]It's a bit of a minefield. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 But, then we of course, had to point out[br]that there's plenty of disabled people 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 that were unfortunately disabled in[br]minefields. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 So, perhaps it wasn't the best title.[br][Laughter} 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 So, what would you call a new disability [br]website, Leah, that's what I want to know. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 I would, just a period. [br]I don't know. I think you guys did a 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 great job with what you came up with.[br]I think it's perfect, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 Thank you very much.[br]-Yeah, absolutely. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 -Can you think of the most memorable[br]reaction you've gotten from an audience 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 or listener?[br]Most memorable? 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 -Yeah, anything that really[br]stands out to you? 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 -Funny, negative, positive, something that[br]just pops in your head. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 Oh, yeah, things aren't popping into my[br]head right now. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 I mean, it's always nice when we get[br]people now, course, podcast's been running 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 10 years, but we get people who say,[br]"you changed our life with your podcast. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 We've never heard disabled voiced in that[br]way before." 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 We had created a kind of radio show, that[br]had never been done before, in that way 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 and it was really out there and really[br]said, horrible things some times but 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 you know, quirky things and amusing things[br]and it had a but of an attitude so a lot 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 of people have written to us over the[br]years and said if it wasn't for the 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 podcast we wouldn't have the same kind of[br]self-esteem we have now and wouldn't 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 really have gone down certain roads to[br]becoming happy, really. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 Which is, you know, very exciting.[br]I don't know if everybody thinks like that 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 I'm sure they don't, but some are [br]particularly gratifying. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 They've happened. I guess that's why we do[br]this disability media stuff, isn't it? 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 -Sure. Change attitudes, bring awareness. [br]Yeah. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 -So, anything else you want to add because[br]I am pleased with our chat. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 [Laughter][br]What else can I add? 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 Well, if anybody wants to come see[br]our staff, it's bbc.co.uk/ouch 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 We do podcast, video, articles, you know.[br]-Thanks for joining us. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 Thank you.[br]-Yeah.
