WEBVTT 00:00:00.782 --> 00:00:04.943 On the fourth of January, 1934, 00:00:04.943 --> 00:00:07.749 A young man delivered a report 00:00:07.749 --> 00:00:10.384 to the United States Congress 00:00:10.384 --> 00:00:12.058 that 80 years on, 00:00:12.058 --> 00:00:17.088 still shapes the lives of everyone in this room today. 00:00:17.088 --> 00:00:22.632 Still shapes the lives of everyone on this planet. 00:00:22.632 --> 00:00:25.362 That young man wasn't a politician, 00:00:25.362 --> 00:00:27.321 he wasn't a businessman, 00:00:27.321 --> 00:00:28.918 a civil rights activist, 00:00:28.918 --> 00:00:30.423 or a faith leader. 00:00:30.423 --> 00:00:33.954 He was the most unlikely of heroes, 00:00:33.954 --> 00:00:37.141 an economist. 00:00:37.141 --> 00:00:37.857 (Laughter) 00:00:37.857 --> 00:00:39.752 His name was Simon Kuznets 00:00:39.752 --> 00:00:42.696 and the report that he delivered was called, 00:00:42.696 --> 00:00:47.798 "National Income, 1929-32" 00:00:47.798 --> 00:00:49.492 Now, you might think that 00:00:49.492 --> 00:00:52.103 this is a rather dry and dull report, 00:00:52.103 --> 00:00:53.805 and you're absolutely right. 00:00:53.805 --> 00:00:56.550 It's dry as a bone. 00:00:56.550 --> 00:00:58.570 But this report is the foundation 00:00:58.570 --> 00:01:02.263 of how, today, we judge the success of countries. 00:01:02.263 --> 00:01:05.052 What we know best as Gross Domestic Product, 00:01:05.052 --> 00:01:07.363 or GDP. 00:01:07.363 --> 00:01:10.776 GDP has defined and shaped our lives 00:01:10.776 --> 00:01:13.324 for the last 80 years. 00:01:13.324 --> 00:01:14.681 And today I want to talk about 00:01:14.681 --> 00:01:18.520 a different way to measure the success of countries. 00:01:18.520 --> 00:01:22.069 A different way to define and shape our lives 00:01:22.069 --> 00:01:25.226 for the nest 80 years. 00:01:25.226 --> 00:01:27.197 But first, we need to understand 00:01:27.197 --> 00:01:31.316 how GDP came to dominate our lives. 00:01:31.316 --> 00:01:32.986 Kuznet's report was delivered 00:01:32.986 --> 00:01:34.878 at a moment of crisis. 00:01:34.878 --> 00:01:36.734 The U.S. economy was plumetting 00:01:36.734 --> 00:01:38.349 into the Great Depression. 00:01:38.349 --> 00:01:41.434 and policy makers were struggling to respond. 00:01:41.434 --> 00:01:45.099 Struggling because they didn't know what was going on. 00:01:45.099 --> 00:01:48.361 They didn't have data and statistics. 00:01:48.361 --> 00:01:50.783 So what Kuznet's report gave them 00:01:50.783 --> 00:01:54.371 was reliable data on what the U.S. economy 00:01:54.371 --> 00:01:55.656 was producing, 00:01:55.656 --> 00:01:58.764 updated year by year. 00:01:58.764 --> 00:02:00.604 And armed with this information, 00:02:00.604 --> 00:02:03.082 policy makers were, eventually, 00:02:03.082 --> 00:02:06.040 able to find a way out of the slump. 00:02:06.040 --> 00:02:08.302 And because Kuznet's invention 00:02:08.302 --> 00:02:10.084 was found to be so useful, 00:02:10.084 --> 00:02:11.762 it spread around the world. 00:02:11.762 --> 00:02:13.851 And now today, every country 00:02:13.851 --> 00:02:17.425 produces GDP statistics. 00:02:17.425 --> 00:02:19.922 But, in that first report, 00:02:19.922 --> 00:02:23.826 Kuznets himself delivered a warning. 00:02:23.826 --> 00:02:25.747 It's in the introductory chapter, 00:02:25.747 --> 00:02:27.481 page 7 he says, 00:02:27.481 --> 00:02:30.400 "The welfare of a nation can, therefore, 00:02:30.400 --> 00:02:31.934 scarcely be inferred 00:02:31.934 --> 00:02:34.044 from a measurement of national income 00:02:34.044 --> 00:02:35.601 as defined above." 00:02:35.601 --> 00:02:38.099 It's not the greatest soundbite in the world, 00:02:38.099 --> 00:02:41.628 And it's dressed up in the coursest language 00:02:41.628 --> 00:02:42.756 of the economist, 00:02:42.756 --> 00:02:45.034 but his message was clear, 00:02:45.034 --> 00:02:46.598 GDP is a tool 00:02:46.598 --> 00:02:49.996 to help us measure economic performance. 00:02:49.996 --> 00:02:52.904 It's not a measure of our wellbeing. 00:02:52.904 --> 00:02:54.561 And it shouldn't be a guide 00:02:54.561 --> 00:02:57.784 to all decision making. 00:02:57.784 --> 00:02:59.141 But we have ignored 00:02:59.141 --> 00:03:00.913 Kuznet's warning. 00:03:00.913 --> 00:03:01.867 We live in a world where 00:03:01.867 --> 00:03:05.280 GDP is the benchmark of sucess 00:03:05.280 --> 00:03:07.177 in a global economy. 00:03:07.177 --> 00:03:10.866 Our politicians boast when GDP goes up, 00:03:10.866 --> 00:03:12.090 Markets move 00:03:12.090 --> 00:03:13.564 and trillions of dollars in capital 00:03:13.564 --> 00:03:14.988 move around the world 00:03:14.988 --> 00:03:17.089 based on which countries are going up, 00:03:17.089 --> 00:03:18.990 and which countries are going down. 00:03:18.990 --> 00:03:21.204 All measured in GDP. 00:03:21.204 --> 00:03:22.533 Our societies have become 00:03:22.533 --> 00:03:27.348 engines to create more GDP. 00:03:27.348 --> 00:03:30.443 But we know that GDP is flawed. 00:03:30.443 --> 00:03:32.973 It ignores the environment. 00:03:32.973 --> 00:03:36.949 It counts bombs and prisons and progress. 00:03:36.949 --> 00:03:38.811 It can't count happiness 00:03:38.811 --> 00:03:40.228 or community. 00:03:40.228 --> 00:03:41.861 And it has nothing to say 00:03:41.861 --> 00:03:44.849 about fairness or justice. 00:03:44.849 --> 00:03:46.291 Is it any surprise, 00:03:46.291 --> 00:03:47.324 that our world, 00:03:47.324 --> 00:03:50.365 marching to the drumbeat of GDP, 00:03:50.365 --> 00:03:51.812 is teetering on the brink 00:03:51.812 --> 00:03:53.852 of environmental disaster 00:03:53.852 --> 00:03:56.938 and filled with anger and conflict? 00:03:56.938 --> 00:03:58.941 We need a better way 00:03:58.941 --> 00:04:01.341 to measure our societies. 00:04:01.341 --> 00:04:03.894 A measure based on the real things 00:04:03.894 --> 00:04:06.699 that matter to real people. 00:04:06.699 --> 00:04:08.686 Do I have enough to eat? 00:04:08.686 --> 00:04:11.182 Can I read and write? 00:04:11.182 --> 00:04:12.880 Am I safe? 00:04:12.880 --> 00:04:15.095 Do I have rights? 00:04:15.095 --> 00:04:18.247 Do I live in a society where I'm not discriminated against? 00:04:18.247 --> 00:04:19.284 Is my future 00:04:19.284 --> 00:04:21.034 and the future of my children 00:04:21.034 --> 00:04:24.612 prevented from environmental disaster? 00:04:24.612 --> 00:04:26.283 These are questions that GDP 00:04:26.283 --> 00:04:31.386 does not and cannot answer. 00:04:31.386 --> 00:04:32.755 There have, of course, 00:04:32.755 --> 00:04:33.921 been efforts in the past 00:04:33.921 --> 00:04:36.843 to move beyond GDP. 00:04:36.843 --> 00:04:38.328 But I believe that we're living 00:04:38.328 --> 00:04:39.532 in a moment when we 00:04:39.532 --> 00:04:43.332 are ready for a measurement revolution. 00:04:43.332 --> 00:04:45.628 We're ready because we've seen, 00:04:45.628 --> 00:04:47.862 in the financial crisis of 2008, 00:04:47.862 --> 00:04:50.681 how our fetish for economic growth 00:04:50.681 --> 00:04:53.112 led us so far astray. 00:04:53.112 --> 00:04:55.096 We've seen in the Arab Spring 00:04:55.096 --> 00:04:56.941 how countries like Tunisia 00:04:56.941 --> 00:04:59.861 were supposedly economic superstars 00:04:59.861 --> 00:05:01.216 but they were societies 00:05:01.216 --> 00:05:04.795 that were seething with discontentment. 00:05:04.795 --> 00:05:06.563 We're ready because today 00:05:06.563 --> 00:05:08.174 we have the technology 00:05:08.174 --> 00:05:10.498 to gather and analyze data 00:05:10.498 --> 00:05:11.904 in ways that would have been 00:05:11.904 --> 00:05:14.945 unimaginable to Kuznets. 00:05:14.945 --> 00:05:16.808 Today, I'd like to introduce you to 00:05:16.808 --> 00:05:19.751 the Social Progress Index. 00:05:19.751 --> 00:05:22.155 It's a measure of the wellbeing of society, 00:05:22.155 --> 00:05:25.252 completely separate from GDP. 00:05:25.252 --> 00:05:27.133 It's a whole new way [Social Progress Index] 00:05:27.133 --> 00:05:28.849 of looking at the world. 00:05:28.849 --> 00:05:30.179 The Social Progress Index 00:05:30.179 --> 00:05:31.752 begins by defining what it 00:05:31.752 --> 00:05:33.869 means to be a good society 00:05:33.869 --> 00:05:36.940 based around three dimensions: 00:05:36.940 --> 00:05:41.505 The first is, does everyone have the basic needs for survival? 00:05:41.505 --> 00:05:44.485 Food, water, shelter, safety. 00:05:44.485 --> 00:05:46.605 Secondly, does everyone have 00:05:46.605 --> 00:05:48.226 access to the building blocks 00:05:48.226 --> 00:05:49.994 to improve their lives? 00:05:49.994 --> 00:05:54.688 Education, information, health and sustainable environment. 00:05:54.688 --> 00:05:55.608 And then third, 00:05:55.608 --> 00:05:57.632 does every individual have access 00:05:57.632 --> 00:06:00.762 to the chance to pursue their goals 00:06:00.762 --> 00:06:02.260 and dreams and ambitions 00:06:02.260 --> 00:06:03.667 free from obstacles? 00:06:03.667 --> 00:06:05.114 Do they have rights? 00:06:05.114 --> 00:06:06.573 Freedom of choice? 00:06:06.573 --> 00:06:08.295 Freedom from discrimination 00:06:08.295 --> 00:06:11.976 and access to the the world's most advanced knowledge? 00:06:11.976 --> 00:06:14.950 Together, these 12 components 00:06:14.950 --> 00:06:18.435 form the Social Progress framework. 00:06:18.435 --> 00:06:20.293 And for each of these 12 components, 00:06:20.293 --> 00:06:21.974 we have indicators to measure 00:06:21.974 --> 00:06:24.051 how these countries are performing. 00:06:24.051 --> 00:06:27.073 Not indicators of effort or intention, 00:06:27.073 --> 00:06:29.341 but real achievement. 00:06:29.341 --> 00:06:30.763 We don't measure how much 00:06:30.763 --> 00:06:32.573 a country spends on healthcare, 00:06:32.573 --> 00:06:34.946 we measure the length and quality 00:06:34.946 --> 00:06:36.911 of people's lives. 00:06:36.911 --> 00:06:38.680 We don't measure whether governments 00:06:38.680 --> 00:06:41.065 pass laws against discrimination, 00:06:41.065 --> 00:06:46.295 we measure whether people experience discrimination. 00:06:46.295 --> 00:06:47.175 But, what you want to know 00:06:47.175 --> 00:06:50.181 is who's top, don't you? 00:06:50.181 --> 00:06:52.298 I knew that, I knew that, I knew that. 00:06:52.298 --> 00:06:53.404 Okay, I'm going to show you. 00:06:53.404 --> 00:06:55.320 I'm going to show you on this chart. 00:06:55.320 --> 00:06:56.934 So here we are, 00:06:56.934 --> 00:06:59.890 what I've done here is put on the vertical axis 00:06:59.890 --> 00:07:01.266 social progress. 00:07:01.266 --> 00:07:02.701 Higher is better. 00:07:02.701 --> 00:07:04.503 And then, just for comparison, 00:07:04.503 --> 00:07:05.825 just for fun, 00:07:05.825 --> 00:07:07.594 on the horizontal axis, 00:07:07.594 --> 00:07:09.203 is GDP per capita. 00:07:09.203 --> 00:07:11.631 Further to the right is more. 00:07:11.631 --> 00:07:12.273 Okay, 00:07:12.273 --> 00:07:14.967 the country in the world 00:07:14.967 --> 00:07:18.387 with the highest social progress, 00:07:18.387 --> 00:07:21.716 the number one country on social progress 00:07:21.716 --> 00:07:26.133 is New Zealand. 00:07:26.133 --> 00:07:28.821 (Laughter) 00:07:28.821 --> 00:07:37.569 The country with the least social progress, 00:07:37.569 --> 00:07:38.114 I'm sorry to say, 00:07:38.114 --> 00:07:39.076 is Chad. 00:07:39.076 --> 00:07:43.008 I've never been, maybe next year. 00:07:43.008 --> 00:07:43.877 (Laughter) 00:07:43.877 --> 00:07:46.529 Or maybe the year after. 00:07:46.529 --> 00:07:47.462 Now, I know what you're thinking. 00:07:47.462 --> 00:07:48.782 You're thinking, "Aha!, 00:07:48.782 --> 00:07:50.988 but New Zealand has a higher GDP 00:07:50.988 --> 00:07:53.190 than Chad. 00:07:53.190 --> 00:07:55.804 Good point, well made. 00:07:55.804 --> 00:07:56.806 But let me show you 00:07:56.806 --> 00:07:58.369 two other countries. 00:07:58.369 --> 00:08:00.675 Here's the United States, 00:08:00.675 --> 00:08:03.242 considerably richer than New Zealand, 00:08:03.242 --> 00:08:06.148 but with a lower level of social progress. 00:08:06.148 --> 00:08:08.630 And then here's Senegal, 00:08:08.630 --> 00:08:11.477 it's got a higher level of social progress 00:08:11.477 --> 00:08:13.411 than Chad, but with 00:08:13.411 --> 00:08:14.826 the same level of GDP. 00:08:14.826 --> 00:08:15.726 So what's going on? 00:08:15.726 --> 00:08:16.345 Well, look. 00:08:16.345 --> 00:08:18.726 Let me bring in the rest of the countries of the world, 00:08:18.726 --> 00:08:21.014 the 132 we've been able to measure, 00:08:21.014 --> 00:08:23.752 each one represented by a dot. 00:08:23.752 --> 00:08:24.581 There are lots of dots. 00:08:24.581 --> 00:08:26.503 Now, obviously I can't do all of them, 00:08:26.503 --> 00:08:28.316 so a few highlights for you: 00:08:28.316 --> 00:08:33.116 the highest ranked G7 country is Canada. 00:08:33.116 --> 00:08:35.190 My country, the United Kingdom, 00:08:35.190 --> 00:08:38.177 is sort of middling, sort of dull, 00:08:38.177 --> 00:08:39.282 but who cares, 00:08:39.282 --> 00:08:41.240 at least we beat the french. 00:08:41.240 --> 00:08:49.177 (Laughter) 00:08:49.177 --> 00:08:51.344 And then looking at the emerging economies, 00:08:51.344 --> 00:08:53.838 top of the bricks, pleased to say, 00:08:53.838 --> 00:08:55.507 is Brazil. 00:08:55.507 --> 00:08:56.314 (Laughter) 00:08:56.314 --> 00:08:58.141 Come on, cheer! 00:08:58.141 --> 00:09:00.343 Go, Brazil! 00:09:00.343 --> 00:09:01.676 Beating South Africa, 00:09:01.676 --> 00:09:02.729 then Russia, 00:09:02.729 --> 00:09:04.003 then China, 00:09:04.003 --> 00:09:05.467 and then India. 00:09:05.467 --> 00:09:07.942 Tucked away on the right-hand side, 00:09:07.942 --> 00:09:10.032 you will see a dot of a country with 00:09:10.032 --> 00:09:11.485 a lot of GDP but not 00:09:11.485 --> 00:09:13.318 a huge amount of social progress, 00:09:13.318 --> 00:09:15.196 that's Kuwait. 00:09:15.196 --> 00:09:16.867 Just above Brazil 00:09:16.867 --> 00:09:19.406 is a social progress superpower, 00:09:19.406 --> 00:09:21.013 that's Costa Rica. 00:09:21.013 --> 00:09:22.396 It's got a level of social progress 00:09:22.396 --> 00:09:24.661 the same as some Western European countries, 00:09:24.661 --> 00:09:26.680 with a much lower GDP. 00:09:26.680 --> 00:09:29.022 Now, my slide is getting a little cluttered 00:09:29.022 --> 00:09:30.514 and I'd like to step back a bit. 00:09:30.514 --> 00:09:32.108 So let me take away these countries, 00:09:32.108 --> 00:09:34.952 and then pop in the regression line. 00:09:34.952 --> 00:09:36.665 So this shows the average relationship 00:09:36.665 --> 00:09:39.206 between GDP and social progress. 00:09:39.206 --> 00:09:41.398 The first thing to notice, 00:09:41.398 --> 00:09:43.193 is that there's lots of noise 00:09:43.193 --> 00:09:45.240 around the trend line. 00:09:45.240 --> 00:09:46.275 And what this shows, 00:09:46.275 --> 00:09:49.157 what this impiracially demonstrates, 00:09:49.157 --> 00:09:52.522 is that GDP is not destiny. 00:09:52.522 --> 00:09:55.395 At every level of GDP per capita, 00:09:55.395 --> 00:09:57.103 there are opportunities 00:09:57.103 --> 00:09:58.535 for more social progress, 00:09:58.535 --> 00:10:01.226 risks of less. 00:10:01.226 --> 00:10:02.496 The second thing to notice 00:10:02.496 --> 00:10:04.559 is that for poor countries, 00:10:04.559 --> 00:10:06.832 the curve is really steep. 00:10:06.832 --> 00:10:07.807 So what this tells us is that 00:10:07.807 --> 00:10:09.060 if poor countries can get 00:10:09.060 --> 00:10:11.174 a little bit of extra GDP, 00:10:11.174 --> 00:10:13.037 and if they reinvest that in 00:10:13.037 --> 00:10:15.629 doctors, nurses, water supplies, 00:10:15.629 --> 00:10:17.042 sanitation, etcetera, 00:10:17.042 --> 00:10:19.081 there's a lot of social progress bang 00:10:19.081 --> 00:10:20.687 for your GDP buck. 00:10:20.687 --> 00:10:21.492 And that's good news 00:10:21.492 --> 00:10:22.274 and that's what we've seen 00:10:22.274 --> 00:10:23.960 over the past 20, 30 years 00:10:23.960 --> 00:10:25.723 with a lot of people lifted out of poverty 00:10:25.723 --> 00:10:28.273 by economic growth and good policies 00:10:28.273 --> 00:10:30.045 in poorer countries. 00:10:30.045 --> 00:10:32.592 But go on a bit further up the curve, 00:10:32.592 --> 00:10:34.771 and then we see it flattening out. 00:10:34.771 --> 00:10:36.603 Each extra dollar of GDP 00:10:36.603 --> 00:10:38.459 is buying less and less 00:10:38.459 --> 00:10:40.370 social progress. 00:10:40.370 --> 00:10:41.463 And with more and more 00:10:41.463 --> 00:10:42.508 of the world's population 00:10:42.508 --> 00:10:45.486 living on this part of the curve, 00:10:45.486 --> 00:10:47.300 `It means GDP is becoming 00:10:47.300 --> 00:10:49.554 less and less useful 00:10:49.554 --> 00:10:51.600 as a guide to our development. 00:10:51.600 --> 00:10:54.097 I'll show you an example of Brazil. 00:10:54.097 --> 00:10:54.970 Here's Brazil, 00:10:54.970 --> 00:10:56.287 social progress of about 00:10:56.287 --> 00:10:57.841 70 out of 100. 00:10:57.841 --> 00:11:00.825 GDP per capita about 14,000 dollars per year. 00:11:00.825 --> 00:11:03.256 And look, Brazil's above the line. 00:11:03.256 --> 00:11:05.142 Brazil is doing a reasonably good job 00:11:05.142 --> 00:11:08.797 of turning GDP into social progress. 00:11:08.797 --> 00:11:10.454 But where does Brazil go next? 00:11:10.454 --> 00:11:11.966 Let's say that Brazil 00:11:11.966 --> 00:11:13.998 adopts a bold economic plan 00:11:13.998 --> 00:11:16.561 to double GDP in the next decade. 00:11:16.561 --> 00:11:19.857 But that is only half a plan. 00:11:19.857 --> 00:11:21.934 It's less than half a plan 00:11:21.934 --> 00:11:23.252 because where does Brazil 00:11:23.252 --> 00:11:25.676 want to go on social progress? 00:11:25.676 --> 00:11:27.904 Brazil, it's possible 00:11:27.904 --> 00:11:29.239 to increase your growth, 00:11:29.239 --> 00:11:30.816 increase your GDP, 00:11:30.816 --> 00:11:32.706 while stagnating or going backwards 00:11:32.706 --> 00:11:34.585 on social progress. 00:11:34.585 --> 00:11:35.361 We don't want Brazil 00:11:35.361 --> 00:11:37.233 to become like Russia. 00:11:37.233 --> 00:11:38.358 What you really want 00:11:38.358 --> 00:11:39.575 is for Brazil 00:11:39.575 --> 00:11:40.941 to get eve more efficient 00:11:40.941 --> 00:11:42.893 at creating social progress 00:11:42.893 --> 00:11:44.239 from its GDP 00:11:44.239 --> 00:11:47.279 so it becomes more like New Zealand. 00:11:47.279 --> 00:11:48.099 And what that means 00:11:48.099 --> 00:11:49.036 is that Brazil needs 00:11:49.036 --> 00:11:50.771 to prioritize social progress 00:11:50.771 --> 00:11:52.468 in its development plan 00:11:52.468 --> 00:11:54.880 and see that it's not just growth alone, 00:11:54.880 --> 00:11:57.962 its growth with social progress. 00:11:57.962 --> 00:12:00.150 And that's what the Social Program Index does. 00:12:00.150 --> 00:12:02.960 It reframes the debate about development, 00:12:02.960 --> 00:12:05.030 not just about GDP alone, 00:12:05.030 --> 00:12:07.399 but inclusive, sustainable growth 00:12:07.399 --> 00:12:09.438 that brings real improvements 00:12:09.438 --> 00:12:12.124 in people's lives. 00:12:12.124 --> 00:12:14.554 And its not just about countries. 00:12:14.554 --> 00:12:17.904 Earlier this year, 00:12:17.904 --> 00:12:21.221 with our friends from the Amazon non-profit 00:12:21.221 --> 00:12:22.400 here in Brazil, launched 00:12:22.400 --> 00:12:25.388 the first sub-national 00:12:25.388 --> 00:12:26.020 Social Progress Index. 00:12:26.020 --> 00:12:28.868 We did it for the Amaaon region, 00:12:28.868 --> 00:12:31.555 it's an area the size of Europe, 00:12:31.555 --> 00:12:32.966 24 million people, 00:12:32.966 --> 00:12:35.444 one of the most deprived parts of the country. 00:12:35.444 --> 00:12:37.254 And here are the results: 00:12:37.254 --> 00:12:39.009 and this is broken down 00:12:39.009 --> 00:12:42.693 into nearly 800 municipalities. 00:12:42.693 --> 00:12:44.206 And with this detailed information 00:12:44.206 --> 00:12:46.434 about the real quality of life 00:12:46.434 --> 00:12:48.347 in this part of the country, 00:12:48.347 --> 00:12:50.027 Amazon and other partners 00:12:50.027 --> 00:12:52.686 from government and civil society 00:12:52.686 --> 00:12:54.230 can work together to construct 00:12:54.230 --> 00:12:55.677 a development plan 00:12:55.677 --> 00:12:58.344 that will help really improve people's lives, 00:12:58.344 --> 00:13:01.250 while protecting that precious, global asset 00:13:01.250 --> 00:13:04.561 that is the Amazon rainforest. 00:13:04.561 --> 00:13:06.122 And this is just the beginning, 00:13:06.122 --> 00:13:08.501 You can create a Social Progress Index 00:13:08.501 --> 00:13:10.551 for any state, 00:13:10.551 --> 00:13:11.323 region, 00:13:11.323 --> 00:13:12.238 city 00:13:12.238 --> 00:13:14.236 or municipality. 00:13:14.236 --> 00:13:15.969 We all know and love TEDx, 00:13:15.969 --> 00:13:18.261 this is SOCIALPROGRESSx. 00:13:18.261 --> 00:13:19.585 This is a tool for anyone 00:13:19.585 --> 00:13:21.704 to come and use. 00:13:21.704 --> 00:13:23.195 contrary to the ways we sometimes 00:13:23.195 --> 00:13:24.034 talk about it, 00:13:24.034 --> 00:13:27.775 GDP was not handed down from God 00:13:27.775 --> 00:13:30.949 on tablets of stone. 00:13:30.949 --> 00:13:32.550 It's a measurement tool 00:13:32.550 --> 00:13:34.854 invented in the 20th-century 00:13:34.854 --> 00:13:37.022 to address the challenges 00:13:37.022 --> 00:13:39.135 of the 20th-century. 00:13:39.135 --> 00:13:41.004 In the 21st-century, 00:13:41.004 --> 00:13:43.686 we face new challenges: 00:13:43.686 --> 00:13:45.514 aging, obesity, climate change, 00:13:45.514 --> 00:13:46.619 and so on. 00:13:46.619 --> 00:13:48.223 To face those challenges, 00:13:48.223 --> 00:13:49.943 we need new tools of measurement, 00:13:49.943 --> 00:13:54.247 new ways of valuing progress. 00:13:54.247 --> 00:13:56.395 Imagine if we could measure 00:13:56.395 --> 00:13:58.925 what non-profits, charities, 00:13:58.925 --> 00:14:01.174 volunteers, civil society organizations 00:14:01.174 --> 00:14:04.960 really contribute to our society. 00:14:04.960 --> 00:14:07.868 Imagine if businesses competed 00:14:07.868 --> 00:14:11.499 not just on the basis of their economic contribution, 00:14:11.499 --> 00:14:12.963 but on their contribution 00:14:12.963 --> 00:14:15.617 to social progress. 00:14:15.617 --> 00:14:17.080 Imagine if we could hold 00:14:17.080 --> 00:14:18.949 politicians to account 00:14:18.949 --> 00:14:23.516 for really improving people's lives. 00:14:23.516 --> 00:14:26.731 Imagine if we could work together, 00:14:26.731 --> 00:14:28.189 governments, business, 00:14:28.189 --> 00:14:29.683 civil society, 00:14:29.683 --> 00:14:31.611 me, you 00:14:31.611 --> 00:14:33.340 and make this century 00:14:33.340 --> 00:14:36.704 the century of social progress. 00:14:36.704 --> 00:14:37.783 Thank you. 00:14:37.783 --> 00:14:43.815 (Applause)
