[Headings] Nelson Mandela an icon of freedom in Africa and the world an inspiring symbol of tolerance and humanity the African tradition of "ubuntu" what is ubuntu? it is a universal truth it is a way of life it underpins the concept of an open society [Journalist] Many people regard you as a personification of ubuntu. What you understand ubuntu to be? [Mandela] In the old days when we were young a traveller through a country would stop at a village and he didn't have to ask for food or for water. Once he stops the people give him food and attend him, that is one aspect of ubuntu. But you'd have to learn various aspects. [Written lines] respect helpfulness sharing community caring trust unselfishness one word can mean so much this is the spirit of ubuntu [Mandela] Ubuntu does not mean that people should not enrich themselves, the question therefore is: I have got to do so in order to enable the community around you to be able to improve. These are the important things in life and if one can do that you have done something very important which will be appreciated.
