I must say that from time to time I like to go back to Murten
or Morat in French. This small medieaval city, which is located on the southern
shore of lake Morat is just very cozy.
A large majority of its citizens speak German in the mostly French speaking Canton Fribourg
and it is also locatated between lake Biel and lake Neuchâtel.
The city's name derives from the Celtic word moriduno
meaning lakeside fortress. It was first mentioned in 515 AD as a defensive place
called Muratum. Murten was founded by Duke Berchtold IV of Zähringen in the 12th century
Murten is especially famous for the defeat of Charles the Bold
against the Swiss (Confederates) in 1476.
The former fortified city has kept most of its ramparts and towers.
The castle, the ring wall and archades are very well preserved.
We have seen that some are under reconstruction.
It is also famous for its classical concerts
as well as for the Chritmas market
and we especially enjoy
the filet de perche
the fish from the lake. Bye
