WEBVTT 00:00:00.420 --> 00:00:02.000 [intro music] 00:00:11.580 --> 00:00:12.440 Hi everyone! 00:00:12.440 --> 00:00:15.900 So, today on my channel I’m starting a new series and its going to be called... 00:00:18.520 --> 00:00:22.080 So, I do a lot of sewing and creating things that I don’t actually film and put on my 00:00:22.090 --> 00:00:25.849 YouTube channel - either because I’m making alterations or I’m trying something 00:00:25.849 --> 00:00:30.050 new or I’m making something which requires a lot of specialized equipment like an overlocker. 00:00:30.050 --> 00:00:34.550 But, I thought that it might actually be fun to start filming some of this sewing I do. 00:00:34.550 --> 00:00:38.080 Because while you might have all the equipment necessary or some of the things I do might 00:00:38.080 --> 00:00:40.970 not that simple, you might be able to pick up some tips or 00:00:40.970 --> 00:00:44.330 tricks or things that you might want to purchase in the future. 00:00:44.330 --> 00:00:48.089 So, without further ado... This is the thing that I made today. 00:00:48.089 --> 00:00:52.250 And I want you to all join me as I make it! So I started out with this old crop top whose 00:00:52.250 --> 00:00:55.049 pattern I wanted to copy because I like the fit of it. 00:00:55.049 --> 00:00:59.190 And some pink stretchy fabric. I then folded the crop top exactly in half 00:00:59.190 --> 00:01:03.580 and I placed it on the fabric’s fold. Then using a washable fabric marker, I traced 00:01:03.580 --> 00:01:07.119 around this half of the top. Adding a small seam allowance of half an inch 00:01:07.119 --> 00:01:10.159 all around the way around. So, I didn’t trace out the sleeves here. 00:01:10.159 --> 00:01:13.970 This is because I’m going to trace where the shoulder seam is instead. 00:01:13.970 --> 00:01:16.970 To do this, I’m going to be using a curved ruler. 00:01:17.020 --> 00:01:19.800 Now, the curve of the ruler matches the shoulder seam perfectly. 00:01:19.800 --> 00:01:24.370 So I used it to trace out the shoulder. Its kind of hard to see the pen here, 00:01:24.370 --> 00:01:28.410 so, with the help of some computer graphics, this is what I just drew onto my fabric. 00:01:29.700 --> 00:01:33.220 Then, I just cut it out! And then I used the same piece to trace and 00:01:33.220 --> 00:01:37.480 cut another shirt piece so that I ended up with two identical pieces. 00:01:37.480 --> 00:01:41.150 One will make the front of the T-shirt and the other will be the back. 00:01:41.150 --> 00:01:45.650 Next up is making the pattern for the sleeves! I place the sleeve onto the fabric fold, with 00:01:45.650 --> 00:01:47.700 the stretch going in the opposite direction this time. 00:01:47.700 --> 00:01:52.690 I traced all around the sleeve leaving about half an inch of the seam allowance again. 00:01:52.690 --> 00:01:57.890 And then, I used a curved ruler again to trace out that shoulder seam. 00:01:57.890 --> 00:02:04.890 So then, I cut this out. Used it as a template for another sleeve piece. 00:02:05.250 --> 00:02:09.759 Then I unfolded both of them and... Here are my two sleeve pieces. 00:02:09.760 --> 00:02:14.940 Then, just to make my garment look all *professional* I overlocked the edges of the sleeves and 00:02:15.780 --> 00:02:20.150 the front and the back of the top like this. Overlockers are amazing! 00:02:20.150 --> 00:02:23.480 But if you don’t have one, this is not a necessary step. It's just a step to make things look nice. 00:02:25.640 --> 00:02:29.080 Then I placed the these two top pieces together. 00:02:29.090 --> 00:02:33.930 So, I started sewing them together using a zigzag stitch and... 00:02:33.930 --> 00:02:39.500 Wait! Why am I doing this when I have an overlocker?! So, I used the overlocker to serge the two pieces together instead. 00:02:42.980 --> 00:02:44.780 Now, this clip hasn’t been sped up at all! 00:02:44.780 --> 00:02:48.460 This is literally how fast it is when using an overlocker. 00:02:48.480 --> 00:02:50.900 ~OVERLOCKERS!~ 00:02:50.900 --> 00:02:52.900 Seriously though, I love my overlocker. 00:02:52.900 --> 00:02:59.900 [music playing] 00:03:02.220 --> 00:03:04.860 I then tried on the top for size and I have 00:03:04.880 --> 00:03:09.970 to say its looking pretty sexy at this point! So, the next step was to hem both the neckline 00:03:09.970 --> 00:03:13.489 and the bottom of the top. Now, if you remember from before, these were 00:03:13.489 --> 00:03:17.790 the raw edges that I overlocked. To both the neckline and the bottom edges 00:03:17.790 --> 00:03:21.720 of the top, I folded these edges up inside the top about half and inch. 00:03:21.720 --> 00:03:26.239 Then I sewed over the top of them using a zigzag stitch with a piece of paper underneath 00:03:26.239 --> 00:03:30.270 to prevent ruffling. I ripped the paper off when it was done and 00:03:30.270 --> 00:03:37.209 this is what the hem looks like! 00:03:37.209 --> 00:03:41.260 Then it was time to sew on the sleeves! So, I matched up the sleeve and the top’s 00:03:41.260 --> 00:03:44.459 shoulder seams - right sides together, just like this. 00:03:44.459 --> 00:03:50.480 And I pinned the sleeve all around the arm hole. 00:03:58.020 --> 00:04:00.340 Then I sewed the two together carefully using 00:04:00.340 --> 00:04:02.520 a zigzag stitch. 00:04:06.940 --> 00:04:10.880 And, this is what it looks like! 00:04:14.540 --> 00:04:19.239 I repeated this for the other sleeve and that’s the top finished! 00:04:19.239 --> 00:04:24.870 Now, this is the first stretchy T-shirt that I’ve ever successfully made! 00:04:24.870 --> 00:04:27.490 And I have to say that I’m pretty please with how it's turned out. 00:04:27.490 --> 00:04:29.990 I did have a bit of ruffling going on at the hem, 00:04:29.990 --> 00:04:33.689 and I think that fiddling around with my overlocker settings or getting a walking foot for my 00:04:33.689 --> 00:04:37.270 machine would help me to make better T-shirts in the future. 00:04:37.270 --> 00:04:41.169 So, I would love to hear your feedback about this potential new series! 00:04:41.169 --> 00:04:43.539 And don’t worry, Make Thrift Buy isn’t going anywhere! 00:04:43.539 --> 00:04:46.830 Its still my favourite series to make! And I also want to make this a space where 00:04:46.830 --> 00:04:51.550 you can share tips and tricks of your own with me if you have a better method for doing 00:04:51.550 --> 00:04:53.710 something, then let me know. And yeah, that’s it! 00:04:53.710 --> 00:04:55.319 I’ll see you all in the next video! Bye! 00:04:57.000 --> 00:04:58.220 [outro music]
