WEBVTT 00:00:01.179 --> 00:00:10.419 (Theme Music) 00:00:10.419 --> 00:00:12.780 Spicer Adventist University celebrating 00:00:12.780 --> 00:00:15.339 100 years of training young people 00:00:15.339 --> 00:00:17.260 for service here in India. 00:00:17.260 --> 00:00:21.150 That and much more coming up next on Mission 360. 00:00:21.150 --> 00:00:44.640 (Theme Music) 00:00:44.640 --> 00:00:49.420 (Music) 00:00:49.429 --> 00:00:51.140 Hello and welcome to Mission 360, 00:00:51.140 --> 00:00:53.489 I'm Gary Krause. Today's program is 00:00:53.489 --> 00:00:56.059 coming to you from the campus of Spicer 00:00:56.059 --> 00:00:58.729 Adventist University, formerly Spicer 00:00:58.729 --> 00:01:01.989 Memorial College. This weekend they are 00:01:01.989 --> 00:01:05.030 celebrating the 100th anniversary of 00:01:05.030 --> 00:01:07.810 education right here on this campus. 00:01:07.810 --> 00:01:10.050 The first pioneers, 00:01:10.050 --> 00:01:11.390 the first Adventist pioneers 00:01:11.390 --> 00:01:14.450 to India had a vision for education. They 00:01:14.450 --> 00:01:16.260 wanted to see schools established that 00:01:16.260 --> 00:01:19.600 would help restore the image of God in men 00:01:19.600 --> 00:01:22.810 and women in this country. And with that 00:01:22.810 --> 00:01:25.450 vision in mind, two young Adventist women 00:01:25.450 --> 00:01:30.370 came to Calcutta in 1895. Within 20 years 00:01:30.370 --> 00:01:32.550 a chain of Adventist schools were 00:01:32.550 --> 00:01:36.240 stretching from the Himalayas in the north 00:01:36.240 --> 00:01:38.329 right through to south India. The first 00:01:38.329 --> 00:01:41.329 class held on the campus of what is today 00:01:41.329 --> 00:01:44.109 known as Spicer Adventist University was 00:01:44.109 --> 00:01:48.969 July 12, 1915. Back then a whole range of 00:01:48.969 --> 00:01:52.409 different courses were offered; carpentry, 00:01:52.409 --> 00:01:56.889 agriculture, even a program in poultry. 00:01:56.889 --> 00:01:59.140 Students were trained in very practical 00:01:59.140 --> 00:02:02.509 skills to reach out into their communities. 00:02:02.509 --> 00:02:05.319 The name of the college, now the 00:02:05.319 --> 00:02:08.780 university, came from pastor W. A. Spicer, 00:02:08.780 --> 00:02:11.560 a pioneer Adventist missionary who today 00:02:11.560 --> 00:02:13.940 his memory is still loved because of his 00:02:13.940 --> 00:02:17.010 self-sacrifice and his commitment to the 00:02:17.010 --> 00:02:19.940 people of this country. On today's program 00:02:19.940 --> 00:02:21.890 we're going to be seeing mission all over 00:02:21.890 --> 00:02:23.750 the world. We're going to be looking at 00:02:23.750 --> 00:02:25.619 Thirteenth Sabbath Offering projects in 00:02:25.619 --> 00:02:29.809 northern Asia. But first up, let's travel to the country of Korea. 00:02:32.099 --> 00:02:36.350 South Korea is often referred to as the land of the morning calm. 00:02:36.350 --> 00:02:39.040 It has preserved a rich and vibrant culture 00:02:39.040 --> 00:02:41.459 throughout the years. Many Koreans have 00:02:41.459 --> 00:02:43.709 great pride and appreciation for their 00:02:43.709 --> 00:02:47.129 country. In a small suburban community, a 00:02:47.129 --> 00:02:48.489 group of young people are getting their 00:02:48.489 --> 00:02:50.970 traditional costumes and instruments ready 00:02:50.970 --> 00:02:53.979 to go to their town's central park and put on a show. 00:02:53.979 --> 00:03:01.909 (Sounds of drums and voices) 00:03:01.909 --> 00:03:03.549 They've been practicing for weeks 00:03:03.560 --> 00:03:06.049 and the community recognizes their beat. 00:03:06.049 --> 00:03:07.259 But who are they? 00:03:19.790 --> 00:03:21.470 This youth church is run 00:03:21.470 --> 00:03:23.790 by the youth and for the youth. They've 00:03:23.790 --> 00:03:25.629 built a solid group of members who are 00:03:25.629 --> 00:03:28.110 involved in all the church's activities. 00:03:28.110 --> 00:03:30.209 The traditional costumes and instruments 00:03:30.209 --> 00:03:33.730 are just one of their many activities to greet the community. 00:03:33.730 --> 00:03:36.240 But this church didn't always work this way. 00:03:39.010 --> 00:03:40.349 Pastor Shin used to be a 00:03:40.349 --> 00:03:43.340 deacon in a church. His oldest daughter 00:03:43.340 --> 00:03:46.000 Bo Hwa was a middle school student, 00:03:46.000 --> 00:03:47.870 there was no one there her age in the 00:03:47.870 --> 00:03:50.400 church and she was lonely. So Bo Hwa's 00:03:50.400 --> 00:03:52.739 mother knew she had to find friends for 00:03:52.739 --> 00:03:54.169 her daughter in the church. 00:04:18.540 --> 00:04:19.350 Thanks to the 00:04:19.350 --> 00:04:21.789 mother's efforts and pancakes, the youth 00:04:21.789 --> 00:04:24.750 congregation was growing! As the church 00:04:24.750 --> 00:04:27.270 grew Bo Hwa's father felt the call to join 00:04:27.270 --> 00:04:31.100 the ministry. At that time Bo Hwa's father 00:04:31.100 --> 00:04:33.180 was a deacon, but he was feeling God's 00:04:33.180 --> 00:04:34.880 call to be a minister. 00:04:48.440 --> 00:04:49.550 Having three family 00:04:49.550 --> 00:04:52.560 members in theology school was not cheap. 00:05:16.960 --> 00:05:18.970 Again, the mother came through by 00:05:18.970 --> 00:05:21.030 baking the Korean pancakes. 00:05:21.030 --> 00:05:27.810 Even before I started I prayed for a long time and I read 00:05:27.810 --> 00:05:30.750 the Bible to get the knowledge. When God 00:05:30.750 --> 00:05:33.350 made me successful in this ministry I 00:05:33.350 --> 00:05:35.469 thought that it was the work of God. 00:05:35.469 --> 00:05:38.920 At first, the community didn't know what to think of this church. 00:05:38.920 --> 00:05:41.210 But the youth decided to give to the 00:05:41.210 --> 00:05:43.490 community. They visited the homes of the 00:05:43.490 --> 00:05:46.460 elderly. They would talk with them, wash 00:05:46.460 --> 00:05:48.530 their dishes, work in their gardens, 00:05:48.530 --> 00:05:52.650 and help in any way they could. As a result of truly 00:05:52.650 --> 00:05:55.150 caring for their neighbors, their reputation 00:05:55.150 --> 00:05:59.540 has transformed to being loved by their community. 00:05:59.540 --> 00:06:02.639 These students are very well 00:06:02.639 --> 00:06:04.500 welcomed by the elderly citizens around 00:06:04.500 --> 00:06:07.389 here. These elderly citizens took them in 00:06:07.389 --> 00:06:09.900 as their grandchildren. 00:06:09.900 --> 00:06:12.389 On a typical Sabbath they will have a church service, 00:06:12.389 --> 00:06:14.389 share a meal together, and spend the 00:06:14.389 --> 00:06:18.510 whole afternoon together. They are truly a church family. 00:06:18.510 --> 00:06:22.110 It is a great joy of mine to 00:06:22.110 --> 00:06:24.340 see them remaining in the faith as they 00:06:24.340 --> 00:06:29.010 grow up and become successful citizens in society. 00:06:29.010 --> 00:06:30.930 With all the growth and activity, 00:06:30.930 --> 00:06:32.949 they have outgrown their humble building 00:06:32.949 --> 00:06:34.970 and need more space to expand. They 00:06:34.970 --> 00:06:38.209 want to train the youth to effectively reach the community. 00:06:38.209 --> 00:06:39.930 A portion of your mission 00:06:39.930 --> 00:06:41.929 offerings will go toward building a mission 00:06:41.929 --> 00:06:43.889 institute for the youth so they can be 00:06:43.889 --> 00:06:47.959 properly trained to introduce their neighbors to Jesus. 00:06:47.959 --> 00:06:49.740 Please pray for the members of 00:06:49.740 --> 00:06:51.940 this church. Pray that this group will 00:06:51.940 --> 00:06:54.629 continue to grow and more hearts are 00:06:54.629 --> 00:06:56.310 touched by Jesus. 00:06:57.550 --> 00:06:59.359 My guest today is Elder Ted Wilson who 00:06:59.359 --> 00:07:00.840 is the president of the General 00:07:00.840 --> 00:07:02.930 Conference of Seventh-day Adventists. 00:07:02.930 --> 00:07:04.600 Thanks for joining us Elder Wilson. 00:07:04.600 --> 00:07:07.120 We're celebrating this weekend 100 years 00:07:07.120 --> 00:07:10.410 of education at Spicer now called Spicer 00:07:10.410 --> 00:07:14.800 Adventist University. Why is education so 00:07:14.800 --> 00:07:16.800 important in a country like India? 00:07:16.800 --> 00:07:20.650 Well first of all, Spicer Memorial College 00:07:20.650 --> 00:07:22.780 which has now become Spicer Adventist 00:07:22.780 --> 00:07:27.860 University, is one of those unique situations 00:07:27.860 --> 00:07:33.720 where education is so important in the life 00:07:33.720 --> 00:07:36.840 of people that this new status is going to be 00:07:36.840 --> 00:07:40.900 an exceptional opportunity for hundreds of 00:07:40.900 --> 00:07:43.150 Seventh-day Adventist students to be able 00:07:43.150 --> 00:07:46.569 to get an education without any Sabbath 00:07:46.569 --> 00:07:50.090 problems. Where as in the past people 00:07:50.090 --> 00:07:52.990 have gone to public universities in India 00:07:52.990 --> 00:07:55.740 and have had to face that challenge of 00:07:55.740 --> 00:07:59.879 classes six days a week and different 00:07:59.879 --> 00:08:03.229 exams on Sabbath. So this is going to be a 00:08:03.229 --> 00:08:05.400 wonderful opportunity and to lay a 00:08:05.400 --> 00:08:10.750 foundation for working in a very high tech 00:08:10.750 --> 00:08:15.319 IT setting with media. India is becoming a 00:08:15.319 --> 00:08:19.060 very strong leader in that area. But in terms 00:08:19.060 --> 00:08:22.919 of education itself; I mean 100 years for 00:08:22.919 --> 00:08:26.590 Spicer, obviously we ought to be in heaven 00:08:26.590 --> 00:08:29.550 by now. We're celebrating the anniversary 00:08:29.550 --> 00:08:32.659 and it's great. But education itself and 00:08:32.659 --> 00:08:35.390 Seventh-day Adventist education in 00:08:35.390 --> 00:08:39.770 particular, is of the greatest factors in why 00:08:39.770 --> 00:08:41.720 the Seventh-day Adventist Church has been 00:08:41.720 --> 00:08:46.140 able to achieve such a strong evangelistic 00:08:46.140 --> 00:08:49.820 level of efficiency in activity around the 00:08:49.820 --> 00:08:52.840 world. Training people, helping them to see 00:08:52.840 --> 00:08:56.600 a vision, understanding the foundation of 00:08:56.600 --> 00:08:58.720 all true education which is a knowledge of 00:08:58.720 --> 00:09:02.890 God, helping people to fully grasp the 00:09:02.890 --> 00:09:08.050 picture that really education is not only a 00:09:08.050 --> 00:09:12.080 way to a higher standard of living but it is 00:09:12.080 --> 00:09:13.910 really, in the Adventist setting, 00:09:13.910 --> 00:09:18.390 a key to our entire understanding of how 00:09:18.390 --> 00:09:19.860 to reach out to people. 00:09:19.860 --> 00:09:23.080 Now, how should a Seventh-day Adventist 00:09:23.080 --> 00:09:26.260 educational institution differ from any other institution? 00:09:26.260 --> 00:09:30.170 What are the key differences in Adventist education? 00:09:30.170 --> 00:09:33.290 Essentially in the academic area we should 00:09:33.290 --> 00:09:38.540 be no less, in fact we should be better than 00:09:38.540 --> 00:09:41.980 any other institution because the Lord has 00:09:41.980 --> 00:09:44.360 asked that we study to show ourselves 00:09:44.360 --> 00:09:50.970 approved. When it comes to the world view, 00:09:50.970 --> 00:09:53.510 that's where Seventh-day Adventists differ 00:09:53.510 --> 00:09:57.910 because we follow Christ's pattern of trying 00:09:57.910 --> 00:10:00.490 to help people physically, mentally, socially, 00:10:00.490 --> 00:10:03.640 and spiritually. And that entire component 00:10:03.640 --> 00:10:07.020 is built into the Seventh-day Adventist 00:10:07.020 --> 00:10:09.220 educational package in such an intrinsic 00:10:09.220 --> 00:10:15.390 way that you can't really pull it apart without 00:10:15.390 --> 00:10:18.120 then destroying what the real purpose of 00:10:18.120 --> 00:10:19.840 Seventh-day Adventist education is. 00:10:19.840 --> 00:10:22.260 So when a student comes out of that 00:10:22.260 --> 00:10:26.580 institution, they have such a complete 00:10:26.580 --> 00:10:30.740 picture as Christ did in His ministry that 00:10:30.740 --> 00:10:34.920 everything they do is tilted and focused 00:10:34.920 --> 00:10:37.630 towards truly helping the person that 00:10:37.630 --> 00:10:39.790 they're dealing with in whatever discipline, 00:10:39.790 --> 00:10:43.500 whatever work, to find true meaning in life 00:10:43.500 --> 00:10:46.020 and to find the Master Teacher, 00:10:46.020 --> 00:10:48.420 Jesus Christ. So that's what makes the 00:10:48.420 --> 00:10:52.340 difference and it's this overall 00:10:52.340 --> 00:10:54.840 understanding and it's derived from an 00:10:54.840 --> 00:10:57.200 understanding of Scripture, from the Spirit 00:10:57.200 --> 00:10:59.850 of Prophecy, from an understanding of who 00:10:59.850 --> 00:11:01.540 we are as a people. 00:11:01.540 --> 00:11:05.390 So it's a wholistic emphasis, which isn't just 00:11:05.390 --> 00:11:09.350 head knowledge, it's affecting your spiritual 00:11:09.350 --> 00:11:11.740 life, your physical life, and it comes from 00:11:11.740 --> 00:11:12.840 Ellen White's writings. 00:11:12.840 --> 00:11:14.320 That's where is all started. 00:11:14.320 --> 00:11:17.540 It does, and it affects even your personal 00:11:17.540 --> 00:11:21.060 interrelationships with your family, with how 00:11:21.060 --> 00:11:25.260 you view life, with the purpose of the 00:11:25.260 --> 00:11:27.990 beautiful education you've received, and the 00:11:27.990 --> 00:11:31.810 skills and talents that God has provided for you. 00:11:31.810 --> 00:11:34.210 They're not just to be used for yourself 00:11:34.210 --> 00:11:36.710 but to be used in service to others and 00:11:36.710 --> 00:11:39.260 pointing people to Jesus' soon coming. 00:11:39.260 --> 00:11:40.990 Wonderful, Elder Wilson thank you so 00:11:40.990 --> 00:11:43.320 much for joining us. And right after this 00:11:43.320 --> 00:11:45.230 break we'll be talking to the vice 00:11:45.230 --> 00:11:49.020 chancellor of Spicer Adventist University. 00:11:53.000 --> 00:11:58.170 (Music) 00:11:58.170 --> 00:12:00.070 Welcome back, within the Seventh-day 00:12:00.070 --> 00:12:02.520 Adventist Church the Thirteenth Sabbath 00:12:02.520 --> 00:12:06.390 Offering has iconic status. For many, many 00:12:06.390 --> 00:12:08.040 years Adventists have been giving 00:12:08.040 --> 00:12:10.430 generously to 13th Sabbath Offerings. 00:12:10.430 --> 00:12:13.600 These are collected, as the name suggests, 00:12:13.600 --> 00:12:15.710 every 13th Sabbath at the end of each 00:12:15.710 --> 00:12:18.490 quarter of the year. And these offerings are 00:12:18.490 --> 00:12:22.830 given for very specific projects around the world. 00:12:22.830 --> 00:12:24.780 It could be to start a new school, 00:12:24.780 --> 00:12:27.400 or a new hospital, to help with community 00:12:27.400 --> 00:12:30.290 outreach, various special projects that get 00:12:30.290 --> 00:12:33.650 extra funding to help them do their work. 00:12:33.650 --> 00:12:35.950 Your offerings make a difference in the 00:12:35.950 --> 00:12:38.140 lives of thousands of people around the 00:12:38.140 --> 00:12:41.050 world. Coming up next, let's see how 00:12:41.050 --> 00:12:42.770 Thirteenth Sabbath Offerings will be 00:12:42.770 --> 00:12:45.830 making a difference in Taiwan as three new 00:12:45.830 --> 00:12:49.750 urban centers of influence are established. 00:12:49.750 --> 00:12:52.540 (Music) 00:12:52.540 --> 00:12:54.540 In Taiwan a large group of friends is 00:12:54.540 --> 00:12:56.490 meeting at a local Seventh-day Adventist 00:12:56.490 --> 00:12:58.960 Church. Not all of these friends are 00:12:58.960 --> 00:13:01.580 Adventist members, but all feel welcome to 00:13:01.580 --> 00:13:04.570 attend. It has become known as the 00:13:04.570 --> 00:13:07.810 All Generations Center. This group is made 00:13:07.810 --> 00:13:10.410 up of elderly members of the community. 00:13:10.410 --> 00:13:12.270 They meet together as part of a regular 00:13:12.270 --> 00:13:15.130 program run by the church. This program 00:13:15.130 --> 00:13:18.100 has been active for almost 10 years now! 00:13:18.100 --> 00:13:19.950 The Taiwanese government recognizes 00:13:19.950 --> 00:13:23.270 what they do and supports their programs. 00:13:23.270 --> 00:13:25.090 Pastor Tom is in charge of running the 00:13:25.090 --> 00:13:27.210 program and planning the activities. 00:13:40.745 --> 00:13:43.700 Many of those who come don't have family in the area. 00:13:43.700 --> 00:13:46.940 They don't have people to take care of them. So you can imagine their 00:13:46.940 --> 00:13:48.740 excitement when they get together and 00:13:48.740 --> 00:13:51.160 socialize. The church provides a healthy 00:13:51.160 --> 00:13:53.430 lunch for the group. Pastor Tom makes 00:13:53.430 --> 00:13:55.620 sure to jump in his car to visit the homes 00:13:55.620 --> 00:13:58.466 of those who are not physically able to attend. 00:13:58.466 --> 00:14:02.753 (Sounds of walking) 00:14:02.753 --> 00:14:04.100 He spends some time at their 00:14:04.100 --> 00:14:06.260 homes, hand delivers meals, and prays 00:14:06.260 --> 00:14:09.390 with them. Aside from lunch, the group also 00:14:09.390 --> 00:14:13.630 enjoys exercising, blood pressure checks, crafts, and music. 00:14:13.640 --> 00:14:22.350 (Music & clapping) 00:14:22.350 --> 00:14:24.410 This center of influence has bridged a gap 00:14:24.410 --> 00:14:26.650 to allow people to attend church on 00:14:26.650 --> 00:14:29.100 Sabbath. Before this program began, 00:14:29.100 --> 00:14:30.960 community members were not sure what to 00:14:30.960 --> 00:14:32.480 think about Adventists. 00:14:57.110 --> 00:15:00.060 Through this ministry, people are getting to know Jesus 00:15:00.060 --> 00:15:02.020 and are happier with their lives. 00:15:02.020 --> 00:15:13.930 (Music & singing) 00:15:13.930 --> 00:15:15.740 Throughout Taiwan the Adventist church 00:15:15.740 --> 00:15:18.150 has established Centers of Influence to 00:15:18.150 --> 00:15:20.780 meet people's needs. In this community, 00:15:20.780 --> 00:15:23.340 it meant creating the All Generations Center. 00:15:23.340 --> 00:15:28.000 (Inaudible voices) 00:15:28.000 --> 00:15:30.200 In other communities, education is 00:15:30.200 --> 00:15:33.110 a challenge. Yulin Chong attended this 00:15:33.110 --> 00:15:35.890 after-school program run by the Adventist 00:15:35.890 --> 00:15:38.890 Church. The program helps tutor kids who 00:15:38.890 --> 00:15:42.730 may need help and direction. Yulin struggled 00:15:42.730 --> 00:15:45.730 in school and had a difficult home life. 00:15:45.730 --> 00:15:48.330 He faced a lot of trouble in his earlier years 00:15:48.330 --> 00:15:50.370 and it caused a lot of confusion of what to 00:15:50.370 --> 00:15:52.760 do with his life. After attending the 00:15:52.760 --> 00:15:55.200 after-school program, Yulin learned about 00:15:55.200 --> 00:15:57.810 Jesus and found purpose in his life. 00:15:57.810 --> 00:16:00.480 Now he is a tutor and helps kids who were 00:16:00.480 --> 00:16:03.660 once in his position. People all over the 00:16:03.660 --> 00:16:06.290 world are in need. Each community has 00:16:06.290 --> 00:16:08.520 different needs. Centers of Influence 00:16:08.520 --> 00:16:10.670 around the world are helping touch lives 00:16:10.670 --> 00:16:12.720 in their communities. A portion of your 00:16:12.720 --> 00:16:14.780 mission offering will help support Centers 00:16:14.780 --> 00:16:18.010 of Influence in Taiwan. Please pray for 00:16:18.010 --> 00:16:20.780 these projects. Pray that they may grow 00:16:20.780 --> 00:16:23.720 and continue to be a light in this world. 00:16:23.720 --> 00:16:26.070 My guest is Dr. Justus Devadas who is the 00:16:26.070 --> 00:16:29.990 vice chancellor of Spicer Memorial University. 00:16:29.990 --> 00:16:32.070 Doctor, thank you so much for joining us. 00:16:32.070 --> 00:16:33.070 Thank you very much. 00:16:33.070 --> 00:16:36.620 What an amazing time this is, to celebrate 100 years! 00:16:36.620 --> 00:16:39.790 Indeed, we're on top of the world. 00:16:39.790 --> 00:16:44.100 Now, as you look at the past 100 years, 00:16:44.100 --> 00:16:46.020 obviously you don't remember it all, but 00:16:46.020 --> 00:16:47.550 what would you say are the major 00:16:47.550 --> 00:16:49.190 contributions that Spicer has 00:16:49.190 --> 00:16:50.990 made here in India? 00:16:50.990 --> 00:16:56.500 Until about 15 years back, Spicer was the 00:16:56.500 --> 00:17:01.580 only college of the Adventist Church in the 00:17:01.580 --> 00:17:04.500 entire division, Spicer was the only college. 00:17:04.500 --> 00:17:08.179 So if you look at the work force, probably 00:17:08.179 --> 00:17:11.000 the highest person paid came out of Spicer. 00:17:11.000 --> 00:17:15.560 Whether it was the division president or the 00:17:15.560 --> 00:17:18.010 union conference presidents, most of them 00:17:18.010 --> 00:17:22.630 studied at Spicer and teachers, accountants, anything. 00:17:22.630 --> 00:17:25.480 There are still about 15 years back. 00:17:25.480 --> 00:17:29.070 So it's basically trained workers for the Adventist Church. 00:17:29.070 --> 00:17:32.050 Yes, not only for India, we have had 00:17:32.050 --> 00:17:35.520 students from foreign countries. But from 00:17:35.520 --> 00:17:38.040 the time the college came into being way 00:17:38.040 --> 00:17:41.110 back in 1915, when it moved here in 1942 00:17:41.110 --> 00:17:43.910 we were the only institution in the city who 00:17:43.910 --> 00:17:47.150 had foreign students studying here. And 00:17:47.150 --> 00:17:50.040 then we help ambassadors from different 00:17:50.040 --> 00:17:52.840 countries, one of the GC vice president is a 00:17:52.840 --> 00:17:57.590 Spicer graduate. There are many more. 00:17:57.590 --> 00:18:01.700 Besides Spicer made a distinct contribution 00:18:01.700 --> 00:18:05.900 to the city by it's very existence in this city 00:18:05.900 --> 00:18:09.500 of the culture we've produced here. We 00:18:09.500 --> 00:18:12.010 started several industries in Spicer which 00:18:12.010 --> 00:18:13.940 was never heard of. We also started the first 00:18:13.940 --> 00:18:17.510 bakery in this city, we were also the first to 00:18:17.510 --> 00:18:20.500 manage an agricultural farm, modern farm 00:18:20.500 --> 00:18:24.640 in this region. We used to educate farmers 00:18:24.640 --> 00:18:28.260 from the local areas on modern and 00:18:28.260 --> 00:18:31.750 advanced kind of farming. So it's had it's 00:18:31.750 --> 00:18:37.690 own role to play in the city and India. 00:18:37.690 --> 00:18:39.930 Because our student graduates went and 00:18:39.930 --> 00:18:43.930 started schools and that became something. 00:18:43.930 --> 00:18:45.800 Spicer is a tremendous place. 00:18:45.800 --> 00:18:47.820 So you training teachers as well. 00:18:47.820 --> 00:18:48.850 Oh yeah. 00:18:48.850 --> 00:18:52.970 So what is the philosophy that guides this school? 00:18:52.970 --> 00:18:55.700 Well the Adventist philosophy of education 00:18:55.700 --> 00:18:58.360 we are mission oriented people. Now the 00:18:58.360 --> 00:19:01.420 college was started to produce workers for 00:19:01.420 --> 00:19:07.310 the church and also for people to find jobs 00:19:08.470 --> 00:19:12.430 elsewhere. But the Indian education 00:19:12.430 --> 00:19:14.960 system is British based education system, 00:19:14.960 --> 00:19:17.480 very structured. We cannot do this way, 00:19:17.480 --> 00:19:21.810 that way. Probably for years we were the 00:19:21.810 --> 00:19:24.010 only liberal educational system in this 00:19:24.010 --> 00:19:29.800 country. Then we introduced work 00:19:29.800 --> 00:19:32.320 education program, students asked to work. 00:19:32.320 --> 00:19:36.140 We paid them but then a part of that comes 00:19:36.140 --> 00:19:40.890 to the school. We still do that We put that 00:19:40.890 --> 00:19:44.970 as a program in the University Charter that 00:19:44.970 --> 00:19:48.260 everyone has to work. So it's based on 00:19:48.260 --> 00:19:53.370 sister White's philosophy of education to the fullest. 00:19:53.370 --> 00:19:55.690 A wholistic education. 00:19:55.690 --> 00:19:57.910 Now the name Spicer, coming of course 00:19:57.910 --> 00:20:03.710 from pastor Spicer, how do you look on that name? 00:20:03.710 --> 00:20:06.860 Elder Spicer never worked at Spicer College. 00:20:06.860 --> 00:20:09.840 He worked at the division and he was one 00:20:09.840 --> 00:20:13.700 of those pioneers when the first Adventist 00:20:13.700 --> 00:20:18.150 school was established in India where 00:20:18.150 --> 00:20:20.710 several of our missionaries were even 00:20:20.710 --> 00:20:25.450 killed due to smallpox, but he was there. 00:20:25.450 --> 00:20:30.120 He stayed back and said look, the waves 00:20:30.120 --> 00:20:33.040 may have been defeated but the current of 00:20:33.040 --> 00:20:36.820 God will win. And then his statement, there 00:20:36.820 --> 00:20:38.830 is no position or authority in the church, 00:20:38.830 --> 00:20:41.880 there are positions only of service. All of 00:20:41.880 --> 00:20:44.840 this we heard from him. You will see 00:20:44.840 --> 00:20:47.660 hundreds of children named Spicer even 00:20:47.660 --> 00:20:53.080 today. The name Spicer is given in respect 00:20:53.080 --> 00:20:56.250 of him but then that name is synonymous 00:20:56.250 --> 00:21:01.980 with this Christian institution. Christians, all 00:21:01.980 --> 00:21:06.880 denominations know about Spicer, we are 00:21:06.880 --> 00:21:09.900 a very special place. In fact, I tried to get 00:21:09.900 --> 00:21:11.760 somebody from the Spicer family to come 00:21:11.760 --> 00:21:14.760 for the centennial but they couldn't make it. 00:21:14.760 --> 00:21:16.710 But otherwise the name is very special to 00:21:16.710 --> 00:21:19.500 us. Even though went from a college to a 00:21:19.500 --> 00:21:23.070 university, they said we will keep that name 00:21:23.070 --> 00:21:25.580 but bring the name Adventist between so it 00:21:25.580 --> 00:21:27.020 is Spicer Adventist University. 00:21:27.020 --> 00:21:28.920 Okay, so I said it wrong before, I said 00:21:28.920 --> 00:21:30.780 Spicer Memorial, it's Spicer Adventist. 00:21:30.780 --> 00:21:33.120 Take out the Memorial and add Adventist. 00:21:33.120 --> 00:21:36.600 I for one want to people to know that this is 00:21:36.600 --> 00:21:39.850 an Adventist institution. We'll stand for 00:21:39.850 --> 00:21:43.300 Adventist principles whatever may come. 00:21:43.300 --> 00:21:46.050 It doesn't matter whether we are big or 00:21:46.050 --> 00:21:47.910 small but we'll stand for the Adventist 00:21:47.910 --> 00:21:49.070 philosophy of education. 00:21:49.070 --> 00:21:51.620 So I'm totally committed to that. 00:21:51.620 --> 00:21:54.590 As you look to the future Dr. Devadas, 00:21:54.590 --> 00:21:57.030 what would be your hope that this school 00:21:57.030 --> 00:21:59.020 will continue to contribute? 00:21:59.020 --> 00:22:05.950 Gary, you know the Adventist kids in India 00:22:05.950 --> 00:22:08.950 had suffered for years and years for want 00:22:08.950 --> 00:22:11.590 of an Adventist university because they'd 00:22:11.590 --> 00:22:14.240 go to the secular universities, they'd find 00:22:14.240 --> 00:22:17.780 difficult time to manage the Sabbath issues, 00:22:17.780 --> 00:22:21.930 they'd move with a different group of people. 00:22:21.930 --> 00:22:26.180 Now with our university, we can only grow. 00:22:26.180 --> 00:22:30.760 The Southern Asia has 1.7 million 00:22:30.760 --> 00:22:33.320 membership and that many youngsters are 00:22:33.320 --> 00:22:35.900 there. India has the highest population 00:22:35.900 --> 00:22:38.150 which is less than 24 years old. 00:22:38.150 --> 00:22:40.400 Seventh-day Adventists also, we want them 00:22:40.400 --> 00:22:42.620 to come. We want the education to be 00:22:42.620 --> 00:22:45.670 provided. Then, for international students 00:22:45.670 --> 00:22:49.770 Spicer will still provide top-class Adventist 00:22:49.770 --> 00:22:53.090 education at an affordable price. 00:22:53.090 --> 00:22:54.980 Up next we travel to Japan. 00:22:54.990 --> 00:23:03.800 (Music) 00:23:03.800 --> 00:23:05.370 When you think of Japan you might 00:23:05.370 --> 00:23:08.320 imagine the busy, crowded streets of Tokyo. 00:23:08.320 --> 00:23:10.450 Or your mind might wander off to scenes of 00:23:10.450 --> 00:23:13.060 beautiful landscapes. There is not only 00:23:13.060 --> 00:23:16.110 diversity in Japan's lifestyle and terrain but 00:23:16.110 --> 00:23:18.680 also in the people who live here. Over the 00:23:18.680 --> 00:23:21.230 years many South Americans have settled 00:23:21.230 --> 00:23:25.110 into towns and cities throughout Japan. 00:23:25.110 --> 00:23:27.420 Shizuoka is famous for it's views of 00:23:27.420 --> 00:23:30.250 Mount Fuji. It has a humid, sub-tropical 00:23:30.250 --> 00:23:33.030 climate. On this Sabbath morning the rain 00:23:33.030 --> 00:23:35.610 is holding off allowing this congregation to 00:23:35.610 --> 00:23:41.990 meet beside a peaceful lake outside the city. 00:23:41.990 --> 00:23:44.120 This is a unique group in Japan. 00:23:44.120 --> 00:23:45.849 The members of this church come from 00:23:45.849 --> 00:23:48.780 South America and most from Brazil. 00:23:48.780 --> 00:23:50.850 Many of them have lived here for years and 00:23:50.850 --> 00:23:53.690 this is their home. They come to work, have 00:23:53.690 --> 00:23:56.570 a different quality of life, and sometimes just 00:23:56.570 --> 00:23:59.510 to have a new beginning. Since there is 00:23:59.510 --> 00:24:01.850 such a large population of Brazilians in this 00:24:01.850 --> 00:24:04.250 area, they have formed their own church family. 00:24:04.250 --> 00:24:06.500 The churches atmosphere is friendly 00:24:06.500 --> 00:24:11.170 and kind and all are welcome. 00:24:11.170 --> 00:24:13.120 Brazilians smile a lot. 00:24:13.120 --> 00:24:15.920 They like to hug and they're very friendly. 00:24:15.920 --> 00:24:18.470 They like to make friends and they also 00:24:18.470 --> 00:24:21.170 expect you to come back again. 00:24:21.170 --> 00:24:22.740 Each Sabbath begins with a Sabbath 00:24:22.740 --> 00:24:24.530 School lesson. If you don't speak 00:24:24.530 --> 00:24:27.120 Portuguese there is still a place for you. 00:24:27.120 --> 00:24:29.440 The classes are divided into Portuguese, 00:24:29.440 --> 00:24:32.120 Japanese, and English speaking groups. 00:24:32.120 --> 00:24:36.700 In general, Japan is a challenging area for the gospel to spread. 00:24:36.700 --> 00:24:39.530 Japan is a highly 00:24:39.530 --> 00:24:41.720 developed country. But because of 00:24:41.720 --> 00:24:45.059 secularism and materialism and all these 00:24:45.059 --> 00:24:50.470 things will hinder people to receive the 00:24:50.470 --> 00:24:52.520 gospel message. 00:24:52.520 --> 00:24:54.470 You can notice a strong presence of these 00:24:54.470 --> 00:24:57.260 concepts in the cities. People are busy and 00:24:57.260 --> 00:24:59.559 have little time for religion. This busy 00:24:59.559 --> 00:25:01.750 lifestyle even rubs off on the Brazilian 00:25:01.750 --> 00:25:04.510 migrant workers. For the church members, 00:25:04.510 --> 00:25:08.390 the time to rest on Sabbath is highly valued. 00:25:08.390 --> 00:25:18.100 (Singing) 00:25:18.100 --> 00:25:20.540 Marina is originally from Brazil. 00:25:20.540 --> 00:25:22.070 When she moved to Japan with her 00:25:22.070 --> 00:25:24.110 husband they were not Adventists. 00:25:24.110 --> 00:25:25.970 Her husband wanted to find a new church 00:25:25.970 --> 00:25:27.920 in Japan. So he started looking and found 00:25:27.920 --> 00:25:30.030 an Adventist church. Marina was against 00:25:30.030 --> 00:25:34.270 the idea of visiting. The first time she went to church 00:25:34.270 --> 00:25:36.520 she deliberately wore outrageous outfits to 00:25:36.520 --> 00:25:38.620 embarrass him and maybe stop him from 00:25:38.620 --> 00:25:40.850 going. Her husband told her that as long as 00:25:40.850 --> 00:25:43.620 she comes to church it's okay. Marina 00:25:43.620 --> 00:25:45.740 began to feel something change and before 00:25:45.740 --> 00:25:49.150 long she actually wanted to attend. She 00:25:49.150 --> 00:25:51.370 listened to the messages and eventually 00:25:51.370 --> 00:25:54.240 Marina and her husband were baptized. 00:25:54.240 --> 00:25:56.010 Members like Marina have turned their 00:25:56.010 --> 00:25:58.070 lives around to serve Jesus. 00:26:01.920 --> 00:26:04.650 The mission challenge can be seen around the world 00:26:04.650 --> 00:26:06.220 and especially in places like the 00:26:06.220 --> 00:26:09.040 10/40 window. Churches like this one in 00:26:09.040 --> 00:26:11.430 Japan have a great responsibility to draw 00:26:11.430 --> 00:26:14.880 people closer to Jesus. A portion of your 00:26:14.880 --> 00:26:16.420 mission offerings will support a 00:26:16.420 --> 00:26:18.930 multicultural center where international 00:26:18.930 --> 00:26:21.130 members can come together and lives 00:26:21.130 --> 00:26:23.990 can be touched by Jesus. 00:26:23.990 --> 00:26:26.000 Please pray for this church and other 00:26:26.000 --> 00:26:28.710 international churches around the world. 00:26:28.710 --> 00:26:30.580 Thank you for supporting the mission of 00:26:30.580 --> 00:26:33.010 the Seventh-day Adventist Church. 00:26:34.990 --> 00:26:36.899 Well thanks so much for joining us today 00:26:36.899 --> 00:26:40.860 on Mission 360.
