0:00:01.179,0:00:10.419 (Theme Music) 0:00:10.419,0:00:12.780 Spicer Adventist University celebrating 0:00:12.780,0:00:15.339 100 years of training young people 0:00:15.339,0:00:17.260 for service here in India. 0:00:17.260,0:00:21.150 That and much more coming[br]up next on Mission 360. 0:00:21.150,0:00:44.640 (Theme Music) 0:00:44.640,0:00:49.420 (Music) 0:00:49.429,0:00:51.140 Hello and welcome to Mission 360, 0:00:51.140,0:00:53.489 I'm Gary Krause. Today's program is 0:00:53.489,0:00:56.059 coming to you from the campus of Spicer 0:00:56.059,0:00:58.729 Adventist University, formerly Spicer 0:00:58.729,0:01:01.989 Memorial College. This weekend they are 0:01:01.989,0:01:05.030 celebrating the 100th anniversary of 0:01:05.030,0:01:07.810 education right here on this campus. 0:01:07.810,0:01:10.050 The first pioneers, 0:01:10.050,0:01:11.390 the first Adventist pioneers 0:01:11.390,0:01:14.450 to India had a vision for education. They 0:01:14.450,0:01:16.260 wanted to see schools established that 0:01:16.260,0:01:19.600 would help restore the image of God in men 0:01:19.600,0:01:22.810 and women in this country. And with that 0:01:22.810,0:01:25.450 vision in mind, two young Adventist women 0:01:25.450,0:01:30.370 came to Calcutta in 1895. Within 20 years 0:01:30.370,0:01:32.550 a chain of Adventist schools were 0:01:32.550,0:01:36.240 stretching from the Himalayas in the north 0:01:36.240,0:01:38.329 right through to south India. The first 0:01:38.329,0:01:41.329 class held on the campus of what is today 0:01:41.329,0:01:44.109 known as Spicer Adventist University was 0:01:44.109,0:01:48.969 July 12, 1915. Back then a whole range of 0:01:48.969,0:01:52.409 different courses were offered; carpentry, 0:01:52.409,0:01:56.889 agriculture, even a program in poultry. 0:01:56.889,0:01:59.140 Students were trained in very practical 0:01:59.140,0:02:02.509 skills to reach out into[br]their communities. 0:02:02.509,0:02:05.319 The name of the college, now the 0:02:05.319,0:02:08.780 university, came from pastor W. A. Spicer, 0:02:08.780,0:02:11.560 a pioneer Adventist missionary who today 0:02:11.560,0:02:13.940 his memory is still loved because of his 0:02:13.940,0:02:17.010 self-sacrifice and his commitment to the 0:02:17.010,0:02:19.940 people of this country. On today's program 0:02:19.940,0:02:21.890 we're going to be seeing mission all over 0:02:21.890,0:02:23.750 the world. We're going to be looking at 0:02:23.750,0:02:25.619 Thirteenth Sabbath Offering projects in 0:02:25.619,0:02:29.809 northern Asia. But first up, let's travel[br]to the country of Korea. 0:02:32.099,0:02:36.350 South Korea is often referred to as the[br]land of the morning calm. 0:02:36.350,0:02:39.040 It has preserved a rich and vibrant culture 0:02:39.040,0:02:41.459 throughout the years. Many Koreans have 0:02:41.459,0:02:43.709 great pride and appreciation for their 0:02:43.709,0:02:47.129 country. In a small suburban community, a 0:02:47.129,0:02:48.489 group of young people are getting their 0:02:48.489,0:02:50.970 traditional costumes and instruments ready 0:02:50.970,0:02:53.979 to go to their town's central park[br]and put on a show. 0:02:53.979,0:03:01.909 (Sounds of drums and voices) 0:03:01.909,0:03:03.549 They've been practicing for weeks 0:03:03.560,0:03:06.049 and the community recognizes their beat. 0:03:06.049,0:03:07.259 But who are they? 0:03:19.790,0:03:21.470 This youth church is run 0:03:21.470,0:03:23.790 by the youth and for the youth. They've 0:03:23.790,0:03:25.629 built a solid group of members who are 0:03:25.629,0:03:28.110 involved in all the church's activities. 0:03:28.110,0:03:30.209 The traditional costumes and instruments 0:03:30.209,0:03:33.730 are just one of their many activities[br]to greet the community. 0:03:33.730,0:03:36.240 But this church didn't always[br]work this way. 0:03:39.010,0:03:40.349 Pastor Shin used to be a 0:03:40.349,0:03:43.340 deacon in a church. His oldest daughter 0:03:43.340,0:03:46.000 Bo Hwa was a middle school student, 0:03:46.000,0:03:47.870 there was no one there her age in the 0:03:47.870,0:03:50.400 church and she was lonely. So Bo Hwa's 0:03:50.400,0:03:52.739 mother knew she had to find friends for 0:03:52.739,0:03:54.169 her daughter in the church. 0:04:18.540,0:04:19.350 Thanks to the 0:04:19.350,0:04:21.789 mother's efforts and pancakes, the youth 0:04:21.789,0:04:24.750 congregation was growing! As the church 0:04:24.750,0:04:27.270 grew Bo Hwa's father felt the call to join 0:04:27.270,0:04:31.100 the ministry. At that time Bo Hwa's father 0:04:31.100,0:04:33.180 was a deacon, but he was feeling God's 0:04:33.180,0:04:34.880 call to be a minister. 0:04:48.440,0:04:49.550 Having three family 0:04:49.550,0:04:52.560 members in theology school was not cheap. 0:05:16.960,0:05:18.970 Again, the mother came through by 0:05:18.970,0:05:21.030 baking the Korean pancakes. 0:05:21.030,0:05:27.810 Even before I started I prayed[br]for a long time and I read 0:05:27.810,0:05:30.750 the Bible to get the knowledge. When God 0:05:30.750,0:05:33.350 made me successful in this ministry I 0:05:33.350,0:05:35.469 thought that it was the work of God. 0:05:35.469,0:05:38.920 At first, the community didn't know[br]what to think of this church. 0:05:38.920,0:05:41.210 But the youth decided to give to the 0:05:41.210,0:05:43.490 community. They visited the homes of the 0:05:43.490,0:05:46.460 elderly. They would talk with them, wash 0:05:46.460,0:05:48.530 their dishes, work in their gardens, 0:05:48.530,0:05:52.650 and help in any way they could.[br]As a result of truly 0:05:52.650,0:05:55.150 caring for their neighbors,[br]their reputation 0:05:55.150,0:05:59.540 has transformed to being loved[br]by their community. 0:05:59.540,0:06:02.639 These students are very well 0:06:02.639,0:06:04.500 welcomed by the elderly citizens around 0:06:04.500,0:06:07.389 here. These elderly citizens took them in 0:06:07.389,0:06:09.900 as their grandchildren. 0:06:09.900,0:06:12.389 On a typical Sabbath they will[br]have a church service, 0:06:12.389,0:06:14.389 share a meal together, and spend the 0:06:14.389,0:06:18.510 whole afternoon together.[br]They are truly a church family. 0:06:18.510,0:06:22.110 It is a great joy of mine to 0:06:22.110,0:06:24.340 see them remaining in the faith as they 0:06:24.340,0:06:29.010 grow up and become successful[br]citizens in society. 0:06:29.010,0:06:30.930 With all the growth and activity, 0:06:30.930,0:06:32.949 they have outgrown their humble building 0:06:32.949,0:06:34.970 and need more space to expand. They 0:06:34.970,0:06:38.209 want to train the youth to effectively[br]reach the community. 0:06:38.209,0:06:39.930 A portion of your mission 0:06:39.930,0:06:41.929 offerings will go toward[br]building a mission 0:06:41.929,0:06:43.889 institute for the youth so they can be 0:06:43.889,0:06:47.959 properly trained to introduce[br]their neighbors to Jesus. 0:06:47.959,0:06:49.740 Please pray for the members of 0:06:49.740,0:06:51.940 this church. Pray that this group will 0:06:51.940,0:06:54.629 continue to grow and more hearts are 0:06:54.629,0:06:56.310 touched by Jesus. 0:06:57.550,0:06:59.359 My guest today is Elder Ted Wilson who 0:06:59.359,0:07:00.840 is the president of the General 0:07:00.840,0:07:02.930 Conference of Seventh-day Adventists. 0:07:02.930,0:07:04.600 Thanks for joining us Elder Wilson. 0:07:04.600,0:07:07.120 We're celebrating this weekend 100 years 0:07:07.120,0:07:10.410 of education at Spicer now called Spicer 0:07:10.410,0:07:14.800 Adventist University. Why is education so 0:07:14.800,0:07:16.800 important in a country like India? 0:07:16.800,0:07:20.650 Well first of all, Spicer Memorial College 0:07:20.650,0:07:22.780 which has now become Spicer Adventist 0:07:22.780,0:07:27.860 University, is one of[br]those unique situations 0:07:27.860,0:07:33.720 where education is so[br]important in the life 0:07:33.720,0:07:36.840 of people that this new[br]status is going to be 0:07:36.840,0:07:40.900 an exceptional opportunity for hundreds of 0:07:40.900,0:07:43.150 Seventh-day Adventist students to be able 0:07:43.150,0:07:46.569 to get an education without any Sabbath 0:07:46.569,0:07:50.090 problems. Where as in the past people 0:07:50.090,0:07:52.990 have gone to public universities in India 0:07:52.990,0:07:55.740 and have had to face that challenge of 0:07:55.740,0:07:59.879 classes six days a week and different 0:07:59.879,0:08:03.229 exams on Sabbath. So this is going to be a 0:08:03.229,0:08:05.400 wonderful opportunity and to lay a 0:08:05.400,0:08:10.750 foundation for working in a very high tech 0:08:10.750,0:08:15.319 IT setting with media. India is becoming a 0:08:15.319,0:08:19.060 very strong leader in that area.[br]But in terms 0:08:19.060,0:08:22.919 of education itself; I mean 100 years for 0:08:22.919,0:08:26.590 Spicer, obviously we ought to be in heaven 0:08:26.590,0:08:29.550 by now. We're celebrating the anniversary 0:08:29.550,0:08:32.659 and it's great. But education itself and 0:08:32.659,0:08:35.390 Seventh-day Adventist education in 0:08:35.390,0:08:39.770 particular, is of the greatest[br]factors in why 0:08:39.770,0:08:41.720 the Seventh-day Adventist Church has been 0:08:41.720,0:08:46.140 able to achieve such a strong evangelistic 0:08:46.140,0:08:49.820 level of efficiency in activity around the 0:08:49.820,0:08:52.840 world. Training people,[br]helping them to see 0:08:52.840,0:08:56.600 a vision, understanding the foundation of 0:08:56.600,0:08:58.720 all true education which is a knowledge of 0:08:58.720,0:09:02.890 God, helping people to fully grasp the 0:09:02.890,0:09:08.050 picture that really[br]education is not only a 0:09:08.050,0:09:12.080 way to a higher standard of living but it[br]is 0:09:12.080,0:09:13.910 really, in the Adventist setting, 0:09:13.910,0:09:18.390 a key to our entire understanding of how 0:09:18.390,0:09:19.860 to reach out to people. 0:09:19.860,0:09:23.080 Now, how should a Seventh-day Adventist 0:09:23.080,0:09:26.260 educational institution differ[br]from any other institution? 0:09:26.260,0:09:30.170 What are the key differences[br]in Adventist education? 0:09:30.170,0:09:33.290 Essentially in the academic area we should 0:09:33.290,0:09:38.540 be no less, in fact we[br]should be better than 0:09:38.540,0:09:41.980 any other institution because the Lord has 0:09:41.980,0:09:44.360 asked that we study to show ourselves 0:09:44.360,0:09:50.970 approved. When it comes to the world view, 0:09:50.970,0:09:53.510 that's where Seventh-day Adventists differ 0:09:53.510,0:09:57.910 because we follow Christ's[br]pattern of trying 0:09:57.910,0:10:00.490 to help people physically,[br]mentally, socially, 0:10:00.490,0:10:03.640 and spiritually. And that entire component 0:10:03.640,0:10:07.020 is built into the Seventh-day Adventist 0:10:07.020,0:10:09.220 educational package in such an intrinsic 0:10:09.220,0:10:15.390 way that you can't really[br]pull it apart without 0:10:15.390,0:10:18.120 then destroying what the real purpose of 0:10:18.120,0:10:19.840 Seventh-day Adventist education is. 0:10:19.840,0:10:22.260 So when a student comes out of that 0:10:22.260,0:10:26.580 institution, they have such a complete 0:10:26.580,0:10:30.740 picture as Christ did in His ministry that 0:10:30.740,0:10:34.920 everything they do is tilted and focused 0:10:34.920,0:10:37.630 towards truly helping the person that 0:10:37.630,0:10:39.790 they're dealing with in[br]whatever discipline, 0:10:39.790,0:10:43.500 whatever work,[br]to find true meaning in life 0:10:43.500,0:10:46.020 and to find the Master Teacher, 0:10:46.020,0:10:48.420 Jesus Christ. So that's what makes the 0:10:48.420,0:10:52.340 difference and it's this overall 0:10:52.340,0:10:54.840 understanding and it's derived from an 0:10:54.840,0:10:57.200 understanding of Scripture,[br]from the Spirit 0:10:57.200,0:10:59.850 of Prophecy, from an understanding of who 0:10:59.850,0:11:01.540 we are as a people. 0:11:01.540,0:11:05.390 So it's a wholistic emphasis, which isn't[br]just 0:11:05.390,0:11:09.350 head knowledge,[br]it's affecting your spiritual 0:11:09.350,0:11:11.740 life, your physical life,[br]and it comes from 0:11:11.740,0:11:12.840 Ellen White's writings. 0:11:12.840,0:11:14.320 That's where is all started. 0:11:14.320,0:11:17.540 It does, and it affects even your personal 0:11:17.540,0:11:21.060 interrelationships with your family,[br]with how 0:11:21.060,0:11:25.260 you view life, with the purpose of the 0:11:25.260,0:11:27.990 beautiful education you've received,[br]and the 0:11:27.990,0:11:31.810 skills and talents that God[br]has provided for you. 0:11:31.810,0:11:34.210 They're not just to be used for yourself 0:11:34.210,0:11:36.710 but to be used in service to others and 0:11:36.710,0:11:39.260 pointing people to Jesus' soon coming. 0:11:39.260,0:11:40.990 Wonderful, Elder Wilson thank you so 0:11:40.990,0:11:43.320 much for joining us. And right after this 0:11:43.320,0:11:45.230 break we'll be talking to the vice 0:11:45.230,0:11:49.020 chancellor of Spicer Adventist University. 0:11:53.000,0:11:58.170 (Music) 0:11:58.170,0:12:00.070 Welcome back, within the Seventh-day 0:12:00.070,0:12:02.520 Adventist Church the Thirteenth Sabbath 0:12:02.520,0:12:06.390 Offering has iconic status. For many, many 0:12:06.390,0:12:08.040 years Adventists have been giving 0:12:08.040,0:12:10.430 generously to 13th Sabbath Offerings. 0:12:10.430,0:12:13.600 These are collected, as the name suggests, 0:12:13.600,0:12:15.710 every 13th Sabbath at the end of each 0:12:15.710,0:12:18.490 quarter of the year.[br]And these offerings are 0:12:18.490,0:12:22.830 given for very specific projects[br]around the world. 0:12:22.830,0:12:24.780 It could be to start a new school, 0:12:24.780,0:12:27.400 or a new hospital, to help with community 0:12:27.400,0:12:30.290 outreach, various special[br]projects that get 0:12:30.290,0:12:33.650 extra funding to help them do their work. 0:12:33.650,0:12:35.950 Your offerings make a difference in the 0:12:35.950,0:12:38.140 lives of thousands of people around the 0:12:38.140,0:12:41.050 world. Coming up next, let's see how 0:12:41.050,0:12:42.770 Thirteenth Sabbath Offerings will be 0:12:42.770,0:12:45.830 making a difference in Taiwan as three new 0:12:45.830,0:12:49.750 urban centers of influence[br]are established. 0:12:49.750,0:12:52.540 (Music) 0:12:52.540,0:12:54.540 In Taiwan a large group of friends is 0:12:54.540,0:12:56.490 meeting at a local Seventh-day Adventist 0:12:56.490,0:12:58.960 Church. Not all of these friends are 0:12:58.960,0:13:01.580 Adventist members, but all feel welcome to 0:13:01.580,0:13:04.570 attend. It has become known as the 0:13:04.570,0:13:07.810 All Generations Center. This group is made 0:13:07.810,0:13:10.410 up of elderly members of the community. 0:13:10.410,0:13:12.270 They meet together as part of a regular 0:13:12.270,0:13:15.130 program run by the church. This program 0:13:15.130,0:13:18.100 has been active for almost 10 years now! 0:13:18.100,0:13:19.950 The Taiwanese government recognizes 0:13:19.950,0:13:23.270 what they do and supports their programs. 0:13:23.270,0:13:25.090 Pastor Tom is in charge of running the 0:13:25.090,0:13:27.210 program and planning [br]the activities. 0:13:40.745,0:13:43.700 Many of those who come don't[br]have family in the area. 0:13:43.700,0:13:46.940 They don't have people to take care[br]of them. So you can imagine their 0:13:46.940,0:13:48.740 excitement when they get together and 0:13:48.740,0:13:51.160 socialize. The church provides a healthy 0:13:51.160,0:13:53.430 lunch for the group. Pastor Tom makes 0:13:53.430,0:13:55.620 sure to jump in his car to visit the homes 0:13:55.620,0:13:58.466 of those who are not physically[br]able to attend. 0:13:58.466,0:14:02.753 (Sounds of walking) 0:14:02.753,0:14:04.100 He spends some time at their 0:14:04.100,0:14:06.260 homes, hand delivers meals, and prays 0:14:06.260,0:14:09.390 with them. Aside from lunch,[br]the group also 0:14:09.390,0:14:13.630 enjoys exercising, blood pressure checks,[br]crafts, and music. 0:14:13.640,0:14:22.350 (Music & clapping) 0:14:22.350,0:14:24.410 This center of influence has bridged a gap 0:14:24.410,0:14:26.650 to allow people to attend church on 0:14:26.650,0:14:29.100 Sabbath. Before this program began, 0:14:29.100,0:14:30.960 community members were not sure what to 0:14:30.960,0:14:32.480 think about Adventists. 0:14:57.110,0:15:00.060 Through this ministry,[br]people are getting to know Jesus 0:15:00.060,0:15:02.020 and are happier with their lives. 0:15:02.020,0:15:13.930 (Music & singing) 0:15:13.930,0:15:15.740 Throughout Taiwan the Adventist church 0:15:15.740,0:15:18.150 has established Centers of Influence to 0:15:18.150,0:15:20.780 meet people's needs. In this community, 0:15:20.780,0:15:23.340 it meant creating the[br]All Generations Center. 0:15:23.340,0:15:28.000 (Inaudible voices) 0:15:28.000,0:15:30.200 In other communities, education is 0:15:30.200,0:15:33.110 a challenge. Yulin Chong attended this 0:15:33.110,0:15:35.890 after-school program run by the Adventist 0:15:35.890,0:15:38.890 Church. The program helps tutor kids who 0:15:38.890,0:15:42.730 may need help and direction. [br]Yulin struggled 0:15:42.730,0:15:45.730 in school and had a difficult home life. 0:15:45.730,0:15:48.330 He faced a lot of trouble[br]in his earlier years 0:15:48.330,0:15:50.370 and it caused a lot of[br]confusion of what to 0:15:50.370,0:15:52.760 do with his life. After attending the 0:15:52.760,0:15:55.200 after-school program, Yulin learned about 0:15:55.200,0:15:57.810 Jesus and found purpose in his life. 0:15:57.810,0:16:00.480 Now he is a tutor and helps kids who were 0:16:00.480,0:16:03.660 once in his position. People all over the 0:16:03.660,0:16:06.290 world are in need. Each community has 0:16:06.290,0:16:08.520 different needs. Centers of Influence 0:16:08.520,0:16:10.670 around the world are helping touch lives 0:16:10.670,0:16:12.720 in their communities. A portion of your 0:16:12.720,0:16:14.780 mission offering will help support Centers 0:16:14.780,0:16:18.010 of Influence in Taiwan. Please pray for 0:16:18.010,0:16:20.780 these projects. Pray that they may grow 0:16:20.780,0:16:23.720 and continue to be a light in this world. 0:16:23.720,0:16:26.070 My guest is Dr. Justus Devadas who is the 0:16:26.070,0:16:29.990 vice chancellor of[br]Spicer Memorial University. 0:16:29.990,0:16:32.070 Doctor, thank you so much for joining us. 0:16:32.070,0:16:33.070 Thank you very much. 0:16:33.070,0:16:36.620 What an amazing time this is,[br]to celebrate 100 years! 0:16:36.620,0:16:39.790 Indeed, we're on top of the world. 0:16:39.790,0:16:44.100 Now, as you look at the past 100 years, 0:16:44.100,0:16:46.020 obviously you don't remember it all, but 0:16:46.020,0:16:47.550 what would you say are the major 0:16:47.550,0:16:49.190 contributions that Spicer has 0:16:49.190,0:16:50.990 made here in India? 0:16:50.990,0:16:56.500 Until about 15 years back, Spicer was the 0:16:56.500,0:17:01.580 only college of the[br]Adventist Church in the 0:17:01.580,0:17:04.500 entire division,[br]Spicer was the only college. 0:17:04.500,0:17:08.179 So if you look at the work force, probably 0:17:08.179,0:17:11.000 the highest person[br]paid came out of Spicer. 0:17:11.000,0:17:15.560 Whether it was the[br]division president or the 0:17:15.560,0:17:18.010 union conference presidents, most of them 0:17:18.010,0:17:22.630 studied at Spicer and teachers,[br]accountants, anything. 0:17:22.630,0:17:25.480 There are still about 15 years back. 0:17:25.480,0:17:29.070 So it's basically trained workers for the[br]Adventist Church. 0:17:29.070,0:17:32.050 Yes, not only for India, we have had 0:17:32.050,0:17:35.520 students from foreign countries. But from 0:17:35.520,0:17:38.040 the time the college came into being way 0:17:38.040,0:17:41.110 back in 1915, when it moved here in 1942 0:17:41.110,0:17:43.910 we were the only[br]institution in the city who 0:17:43.910,0:17:47.150 had foreign students studying here. And 0:17:47.150,0:17:50.040 then we help ambassadors from different 0:17:50.040,0:17:52.840 countries, one of the[br]GC vice president is a 0:17:52.840,0:17:57.590 Spicer graduate. There are many more. 0:17:57.590,0:18:01.700 Besides Spicer made[br]a distinct contribution 0:18:01.700,0:18:05.900 to the city by it's very [br]existence in this city 0:18:05.900,0:18:09.500 of the culture we've produced here. We 0:18:09.500,0:18:12.010 started several industries in Spicer which 0:18:12.010,0:18:13.940 was never heard of.[br]We also started the first 0:18:13.940,0:18:17.510 bakery in this city,[br]we were also the first to 0:18:17.510,0:18:20.500 manage an agricultural farm, modern farm 0:18:20.500,0:18:24.640 in this region. We used to educate farmers 0:18:24.640,0:18:28.260 from the local areas on modern and 0:18:28.260,0:18:31.750 advanced kind of farming. So it's had it's 0:18:31.750,0:18:37.690 own role to play in the city and India. 0:18:37.690,0:18:39.930 Because our student graduates went and 0:18:39.930,0:18:43.930 started schools and that became something. 0:18:43.930,0:18:45.800 Spicer is a tremendous place. 0:18:45.800,0:18:47.820 So you training teachers as well. 0:18:47.820,0:18:48.850 Oh yeah. 0:18:48.850,0:18:52.970 So what is the philosophy that[br]guides this school? 0:18:52.970,0:18:55.700 Well the Adventist philosophy of education 0:18:55.700,0:18:58.360 we are mission oriented people. Now the 0:18:58.360,0:19:01.420 college was started to produce workers for 0:19:01.420,0:19:07.310 the church and also[br]for people to find jobs 0:19:08.470,0:19:12.430 elsewhere. But the Indian education 0:19:12.430,0:19:14.960 system is British based education system, 0:19:14.960,0:19:17.480 very structured. We cannot do this way, 0:19:17.480,0:19:21.810 that way. Probably for years we were the 0:19:21.810,0:19:24.010 only liberal educational system in this 0:19:24.010,0:19:29.800 country. Then we introduced work 0:19:29.800,0:19:32.320 education program, students asked to work. 0:19:32.320,0:19:36.140 We paid them but then a part of that comes 0:19:36.140,0:19:40.890 to the school. We still do that[br]We put that 0:19:40.890,0:19:44.970 as a program in the[br]University Charter that 0:19:44.970,0:19:48.260 everyone has to work. So it's based on 0:19:48.260,0:19:53.370 sister White's philosophy of[br]education to the fullest. 0:19:53.370,0:19:55.690 A wholistic education. 0:19:55.690,0:19:57.910 Now the name Spicer, coming of course 0:19:57.910,0:20:03.710 from pastor Spicer,[br]how do you look on that name? 0:20:03.710,0:20:06.860 Elder Spicer never worked[br]at Spicer College. 0:20:06.860,0:20:09.840 He worked at the division and he was one 0:20:09.840,0:20:13.700 of those pioneers when the first Adventist 0:20:13.700,0:20:18.150 school was established in India where 0:20:18.150,0:20:20.710 several of our missionaries were even 0:20:20.710,0:20:25.450 killed due to smallpox, but he was there. 0:20:25.450,0:20:30.120 He stayed back and said look, the waves 0:20:30.120,0:20:33.040 may have been defeated but the current of 0:20:33.040,0:20:36.820 God will win. And then [br]his statement, there 0:20:36.820,0:20:38.830 is no position or authority in the church, 0:20:38.830,0:20:41.880 there are positions[br]only of service. All of 0:20:41.880,0:20:44.840 this we heard from him. You will see 0:20:44.840,0:20:47.660 hundreds of children named Spicer even 0:20:47.660,0:20:53.080 today. The name Spicer is given in respect 0:20:53.080,0:20:56.250 of him but then that name is synonymous 0:20:56.250,0:21:01.980 with this Christian institution.[br]Christians, all 0:21:01.980,0:21:06.880 denominations know about Spicer, we are 0:21:06.880,0:21:09.900 a very special place. In fact, I tried to[br]get 0:21:09.900,0:21:11.760 somebody from the Spicer family to come 0:21:11.760,0:21:14.760 for the centennial but they couldn't make[br]it. 0:21:14.760,0:21:16.710 But otherwise the name is very special to 0:21:16.710,0:21:19.500 us. Even though went from a college to a 0:21:19.500,0:21:23.070 university, they said we will[br]keep that name 0:21:23.070,0:21:25.580 but bring the name Adventist between so it 0:21:25.580,0:21:27.020 is Spicer Adventist University. 0:21:27.020,0:21:28.920 Okay, so I said it wrong before, I said 0:21:28.920,0:21:30.780 Spicer Memorial, it's Spicer Adventist. 0:21:30.780,0:21:33.120 Take out the Memorial and add Adventist. 0:21:33.120,0:21:36.600 I for one want to people[br]to know that this is 0:21:36.600,0:21:39.850 an Adventist institution. We'll stand for 0:21:39.850,0:21:43.300 Adventist principles whatever may come. 0:21:43.300,0:21:46.050 It doesn't matter whether we are big or 0:21:46.050,0:21:47.910 small but we'll stand for the Adventist 0:21:47.910,0:21:49.070 philosophy of education. 0:21:49.070,0:21:51.620 So I'm totally committed to that. 0:21:51.620,0:21:54.590 As you look to the future Dr. Devadas, 0:21:54.590,0:21:57.030 what would be your hope that this school 0:21:57.030,0:21:59.020 will continue to contribute? 0:21:59.020,0:22:05.950 Gary, you know the Adventist kids in India 0:22:05.950,0:22:08.950 had suffered for years and years for want 0:22:08.950,0:22:11.590 of an Adventist university because they'd 0:22:11.590,0:22:14.240 go to the secular universities,[br]they'd find 0:22:14.240,0:22:17.780 difficult time to manage[br]the Sabbath issues, 0:22:17.780,0:22:21.930 they'd move with a[br]different group of people. 0:22:21.930,0:22:26.180 Now with our university, we can only grow. 0:22:26.180,0:22:30.760 The Southern Asia has 1.7 million 0:22:30.760,0:22:33.320 membership and that many youngsters are 0:22:33.320,0:22:35.900 there. India has the highest population 0:22:35.900,0:22:38.150 which is less than 24 years old. 0:22:38.150,0:22:40.400 Seventh-day Adventists also, we want them 0:22:40.400,0:22:42.620 to come. We want the education to be 0:22:42.620,0:22:45.670 provided. Then, for international students 0:22:45.670,0:22:49.770 Spicer will still provide[br]top-class Adventist 0:22:49.770,0:22:53.090 education at an affordable price. 0:22:53.090,0:22:54.980 Up next we travel to Japan. 0:22:54.990,0:23:03.800 (Music) 0:23:03.800,0:23:05.370 When you think of Japan you might 0:23:05.370,0:23:08.320 imagine the busy,[br]crowded streets of Tokyo. 0:23:08.320,0:23:10.450 Or your mind might wander off to scenes of 0:23:10.450,0:23:13.060 beautiful landscapes. There is not only 0:23:13.060,0:23:16.110 diversity in Japan's lifestyle[br]and terrain but 0:23:16.110,0:23:18.680 also in the people who live here. Over the 0:23:18.680,0:23:21.230 years many South Americans have settled 0:23:21.230,0:23:25.110 into towns and cities throughout Japan. 0:23:25.110,0:23:27.420 Shizuoka is famous for it's views of 0:23:27.420,0:23:30.250 Mount Fuji. It has a humid, sub-tropical 0:23:30.250,0:23:33.030 climate. On this Sabbath morning the rain 0:23:33.030,0:23:35.610 is holding off allowing[br]this congregation to 0:23:35.610,0:23:41.990 meet beside a peaceful lake[br]outside the city. 0:23:41.990,0:23:44.120 This is a unique group in Japan. 0:23:44.120,0:23:45.849 The members of this church come from 0:23:45.849,0:23:48.780 South America and most from Brazil. 0:23:48.780,0:23:50.850 Many of them have lived here for years and 0:23:50.850,0:23:53.690 this is their home.[br]They come to work, have 0:23:53.690,0:23:56.570 a different quality of life,[br]and sometimes just 0:23:56.570,0:23:59.510 to have a new beginning. Since there is 0:23:59.510,0:24:01.850 such a large population[br]of Brazilians in this 0:24:01.850,0:24:04.250 area, they have formed[br]their own church family. 0:24:04.250,0:24:06.500 The churches atmosphere is friendly 0:24:06.500,0:24:11.170 and kind and all are welcome. 0:24:11.170,0:24:13.120 Brazilians smile a lot. 0:24:13.120,0:24:15.920 They like to hug and[br]they're very friendly. 0:24:15.920,0:24:18.470 They like to make friends and they also 0:24:18.470,0:24:21.170 expect you to come back again. 0:24:21.170,0:24:22.740 Each Sabbath begins[br]with a Sabbath 0:24:22.740,0:24:24.530 School lesson. If you don't speak 0:24:24.530,0:24:27.120 Portuguese there is still a place for you. 0:24:27.120,0:24:29.440 The classes are divided into Portuguese, 0:24:29.440,0:24:32.120 Japanese, and English speaking groups. 0:24:32.120,0:24:36.700 In general, Japan is a challenging area[br]for the gospel to spread. 0:24:36.700,0:24:39.530 Japan is a highly 0:24:39.530,0:24:41.720 developed country. But because of 0:24:41.720,0:24:45.059 secularism and materialism and all these 0:24:45.059,0:24:50.470 things will hinder people to receive the 0:24:50.470,0:24:52.520 gospel message. 0:24:52.520,0:24:54.470 You can notice a strong presence of these 0:24:54.470,0:24:57.260 concepts in the cities.[br]People are busy and 0:24:57.260,0:24:59.559 have little time for religion. This busy 0:24:59.559,0:25:01.750 lifestyle even rubs off on the Brazilian 0:25:01.750,0:25:04.510 migrant workers. For the church members, 0:25:04.510,0:25:08.390 the time to rest on[br]Sabbath is highly valued. 0:25:08.390,0:25:18.100 (Singing) 0:25:18.100,0:25:20.540 Marina is originally from Brazil. 0:25:20.540,0:25:22.070 When she moved to Japan with her 0:25:22.070,0:25:24.110 husband they were not Adventists. 0:25:24.110,0:25:25.970 Her husband wanted to find a new church 0:25:25.970,0:25:27.920 in Japan. So he started looking and found 0:25:27.920,0:25:30.030 an Adventist church. Marina was against 0:25:30.030,0:25:34.270 the idea of visiting. The first[br]time she went to church 0:25:34.270,0:25:36.520 she deliberately wore[br]outrageous outfits to 0:25:36.520,0:25:38.620 embarrass him and maybe stop him from 0:25:38.620,0:25:40.850 going. Her husband told[br]her that as long as 0:25:40.850,0:25:43.620 she comes to church it's okay. Marina 0:25:43.620,0:25:45.740 began to feel something change and before 0:25:45.740,0:25:49.150 long she actually wanted to attend.
