Good morning fishermen!
We'll soon be heading for the lake and show you our
... not one, two or three but four top advices for catching big pike in a giant lake!
Let's go fishing!
Almost two days without a bite!
What's happening Freddy?
- Hooked up with a monster!
10 kg + easily!
I'm shaky!
We've stayed at Andy's place for the night - he's renting it mostly for the dutch but also for other.
Contact sportfishingdalsland for more information!
However, me and Freddy will go fishing today. Are you excited?
Yes!
Due to the size of the lake our chances of catching a big fish are good.
Usually not too many bites however when you get a strike it's usually from a big fish.
Each cast counts!
I'll also be fishing with Andreas Seger from Pike Hero - the youngest member of team CWC. What's your take on today?
I think our chances are greater than the previous session due to the warmth.
Could still be hard due to no presence of wind.
We'll see - has been negative degrees tonight though.
Not too rare during Spring fishing!
Check this out! No wind whatsoever! Lovely day!
First advice when fishing at big lakes:
- Fish at the right spots!
Easier said than done. Try getting in contact with experienced fishermen
... or ask people about good spots.
You've fished here before so you know what's up, how are we starting out today's session?
We'll start off by fishing rather deep among the baitfish - around 19 meters of depth
... to at least 4 or 3 meters. Big rubber baits as well.
That's the first advice! Let's start fishing and find out wether the advice is good or not!
Since we're fishing pelagic - a big bait is crucial! It gets noticed by the pike a lot easier
... compared to a small bait. The mouth of the pike - on the bigger individuals are hard and thick
... this require you to use a stiffer rod - as this Saxa rod up to 170 grams in order to set the hooks.
Sometimes you catch the fish, sometimes you don't. Keep casting no matter what!
There's only one option - catch a pig!
Hooked up! First for today! Decent!
I'm unable to move - it's coming.
Great!
Struck your bait close to the boat!
- Like 10 meters away from the boat! Saw the bite!
A meter below the surface.
One of the main reasons fishing at big lakes are fun
... are due to the fact that we're basically fishing in the middle of nowhere
... and the average weight is high!
Not bad Freddy!
Beautiful.
We've already got our measuring board from BFT ready. Quick measuring!
108 cm.
Scale is zero:ed, let's weigh it. It's a pre-spawned fish, will be interesting to find the weight out.
8.57 kg!
A pig!
- Big?
Check it out!
- Rod is doing it's magic!
Big fish! Really big!
Great!
My legs are shaking!
The strike from hell!
We've steadily drifted along these edges until we came to this spot - a bit more weedy area.
Which resulted in this pike!
95 cm!
Before attending such a big lake, it's crucial to examine the chart of the lake.
As you can see, there are plenty of interesting spots - however these two are the main ones.
Why these? Because there are deeper areas around. Around 40-60 meters.
When zooming, there are two more shallow areas. The first area hold two interesting spot
... the oblong one with depths at 4.8 meters and the round spot at 6 meters.
You fish these spots by either drifting, or as we did, used our electric motor due to no wind. Keep casting!
If you have no success at the first place - go for the next one. Just keep moving until you find the fish!
Fish again?
- Yes!
We're catching them!
The bite was as hard as the previous one! Lovely!
Took on the Giant Pig Shad in the color Spotted Bullhead! All pikes are caught using this bait!
Advice number two!
When catching a pike - don't be afraid to keep it in the net due to the possibility of a striking period.
Tobias had a follower immediately after this was caught.
Nothing has happened for a couple of minutes - let's examine the fish! Measure and take pictures!
Post-spawned pike!
Could be a meter fish. I estimate it to be 97 cm.
- I'd say 99 cm!
I'll go for 100 cm.
97 cm!
Time to release it. Great back - the
stomach is lacking though!
Lively pike!
- Awesome!
Fish!
Hooked up!
What's happening Tobbe?
- I'm hooked up! Big fish!
Ready?
- Yes.
There we go!
Great!
- Finally my first fish!
I've been hammering so hard!
Not a 10 kg fish.
- Sure?
First bite after two days of hard fishing. I don't believe it's a 10 kg fish but Andreas do
... will be interesting to find out. Meanwhile they're casting I'll unhook it.
Remember advice number two - striking periods!
I'm shaky!
Freddy and Andreas had no success. Time to measure it! Exciting! Hopefully above 10 kilos.
Heavy fish!
The moment of truth. Check it's belly out!
I saw it had a burbot in it's throat! When measuring it it's 118 cm!
118 cm! Has to be a 10 kg fish, perhaps even above!
Let's weigh it! Beautiful fish!
I'm so happy! Two days without a contact, first fish and it's a stunning one! That's why you keep hammering!
I failed to tare the scale so we'll do the math afterwards, I want to release it as soon as possible.
Time to see. Oh it's a 10 kg.
10.48 kg with the bag!
The bag is around 0.3 kg, so around 10.3 kg perhaps!
What a fish! Awesome!
Before releasing it - look the throat! It's a burbot! The burbot could be contributing factor to the 10 kg weight!
Time to release it Andreas! You're doing the job for me!
Big fish, great first fish for me.
There she goes!
Thanks!
- You're awesome!
Thanks for the netting Freddy!
Advice number three - keep casting no matter what!
I'm always repeating that phrase but it's the first fish for the journey. I've kept casting no matter what
... and finally I got it. If you know the fish is nearby - just keep casting. More casts equals greater chances of catching a big fish.
Advice number four - when you finally find a good spot at the water where you notice the presence of fish
... you might get a bite, a follower or something similar - keep drifting but never change spot!
There're certainly pike nearby - don't change the spot!
Forgot to mention! My fish was caught on the Giant Pigshad in the color Smelt.
What has been your bait for today?
- Giant Pigshad in the color Spotted Bullhead, been working great!
Freddy what about you?
- The color Ice Spotted Bullhead!
Why do you believe these type of baits end up delivering fish?
Because the bait allow you to retrieve it slowly with it's wide profile!
A killer bait in big lakes!
The sun is setting and we have a long way home - not preferred to head home during darkness
... so we'll start heading home right now. Been a great day - long time between each bite
... but the size has been amazing. I'm happy, great job all of you!
Great job!
- What's the plan for tomorrow?
The plan is to fish at similar spots - a bit deeper and hammer spots we know hold big fish.
Let's head home! Give me five!
Spring fishing at it's finest! Early morning and late evenings. Let's consume a pizza and get to bed.
New day and new possibilities
for big pike! What's the plan?
A bit colder today - good chances of catching pre-spawned pike. The fish we caught yesterday
... were not as thick as they could've been.
They were all spawned. We're aiming for 15+ pikes! Located in the middle of nowhere!
No land in sight, just open water!
This means pig!
- Let's get them!
When fishing at these depths you have to use these quick sunglasses! Greater chance of a good hookset!
First cast for today! Let's see if there's a 15+ kg pike nearby!
No!
What happened Freddy?
- Lost a pig.
We've been hammering a lot without a contact.
I had a hard bite but didn't manage to set the hooks.
- The scream of doom!
Many emotions involved.
The pike usually follow the bait - we could estimate it to be around 110 cm.
Probably pre-spawned as well - not too fun!
Could've been your personal best.
- Could've been. At least it's here with perhaps it's grandma.
Let's get her.
Fish on!
Could be good.
Great!
Feels good catching something this early. 9:45 a.m.
What's happening Freddy?
- Hooked up with a giant!
A monster!
Let's wait for it.
How big!
Probably personal best.
It's coming up.
Personal best.
Nervous?
- Extremely. Shaky.
I'm releasing this 93 cm fish in order
to give space for the big one.
Not a small one Freddy!
Go for it!
Yes!
How fun!
This is a pig!
I just saw a big shaking head immediately after the bite.
Easily 10 kg +.
How awesome! I'm so shaky - full of adrenalin!
When setting the hook I saw it's head.
Plenty of chaos as you saw. I was measuring and taking pictures of my fish
... when taking pictures Freddy screamed "Big fish!". That's why you didn't get to see too much of my fish.
It was 93 cm and like 6 kg. But Freddy has finally managed to get a personal best.
Advice number two - don't forget!
Let's wait with the casting - we have
to examine this beast!
Plenty of pictures awaits.
The fish is unhooked - time to measure it.
A fighter. Dream fish.
My previous personal best is 9.21 kg, time to see wether this exceeds that!
How long?
- 114 cm.
Quite fat as you can see.
It's thick but not that compact! Guaranteed a 10 kg+ fish.
At least personal best on length with 2 cm! Sick! Beat my personal best on length two times in three days.
Time to see the weight.
I'll keep it in the net until we've got all our stuff ready.
Freddy caught a pig - and I'm bleeding like a pig
... my thumb is patched up in order not to bleed down the entire boat. Totally worth it!
The scale is tarred! Let's bring it up for weighing.
The scale is imprecise.
- from 9.99 to 11.2 kg.
We've tried out different scales - 10.4 kg seems to be the concluded weight.
It's varying due to the waves but 10.4 kg seems like a reasonable weight.
It's not fun to estimate the weigh way too high - therefor it's more fair to assume a lighter weight.
10.4 kg, I'm happy!
Check this belly out!
- Piggy!
Awesome Freddy!
- We came for this one!
Time to release it - congrats on your new personal best!
- Thanks!
Two 10 kg + in three days - yet some time left!
There she goes!
Pig-thumb! Awesome Freddy!
I'm speechless.
This is what we came for. First 10 kg pike, been unable to exceed 10 kg for some years now
... but when fishing with Andreas it was no longer impossible!
What a strike as well! Flew up in the air after she struck the bait just underneath the surface!
Really strong and huge fish. You're so worth it!
Freddy, you'll have the honor to
press this magical button!
How hard can it be?
- Finally got it!
The wind is increasing so we've decided to head home a bit earlier than planned
... me and Freddy have a long way ahead of us home as well. Awesome three days!
How long are our top 5 pikes?
561 cm on 5 fish - really incredible.
Two above 10 kg, longest one at 119 cm. How sick!
Finally Freddy was able to get his first 10kg+ pike as well, really awesome.
Well guided, well fished! We did it great!
