WEBVTT 00:00:00.290 --> 00:00:05.160 You may think being vegan is the right thing to do, that it’s compassionate and responsible, 00:00:05.160 --> 00:00:08.980 good for the environment, the planet, your own health and, of course the animals. But 00:00:08.980 --> 00:00:13.429 did you also know that veganism is metal as f&*%? 00:00:16.759 --> 00:00:21.079 Hi it’s Emily from Bite Size Vegan and welcome to another vegan nugget. As some of you know, 00:00:21.090 --> 00:00:25.360 I was recently in Orlando Florida and had the pleasure of meeting up with two awesome 00:00:25.360 --> 00:00:31.210 vegan YouTubers, Tino from the channels Bananiac and Symposium Films and Brian the Vegan Black 00:00:31.210 --> 00:00:32.229 Metal Chef. 00:00:32.229 --> 00:00:36.000 Two weeks ago I brought you my interview with Tino and his corresponding interview with 00:00:36.000 --> 00:00:37.370 me on his channel. 00:00:37.370 --> 00:00:40.890 And today, I’m excited to share with you my interview with the dark lord of YouTube 00:00:40.890 --> 00:00:46.590 himself, the Vegan Black Metal Chef. You may be familiar with him in his more “metaly” 00:00:46.590 --> 00:00:51.960 incarnation but today we get to take a look behind the faux leather and vegan makeup to hear 00:00:51.960 --> 00:00:54.280 from the man behind the Metal Chef. 00:00:54.280 --> 00:01:00.700 Right, so I am here today with Brian, the Vegan Black Metal Chef who you might know 00:01:00.700 --> 00:01:06.070 from You Tube fame on his channel. We’re just going to talk a little bit about his 00:01:06.070 --> 00:01:09.140 story. So, thank you so much for coming here. 00:01:09.140 --> 00:01:10.010 Thanks for having me. 00:01:10.010 --> 00:01:14.890 Yeah, so I would like, can you just talk a little bit like what made you go vegan 00:01:14.890 --> 00:01:17.360 and what the process was like for you starting out. 00:01:17.360 --> 00:01:23.490 Wow. Sure. I think I have the most typical ‘why I went vegan story’ in all 00:01:23.490 --> 00:01:31.620 of existence. In high school, late high school I had a girlfriend at the time that went vegetarian 00:01:31.620 --> 00:01:38.220 and at that time I said, ‘ you know what? I see that as the right way to go but I’m 00:01:38.220 --> 00:01:43.890 not ready for that yet’ so I didn’t go vegetarian or vegan or anything. Then, in 00:01:43.890 --> 00:01:50.170 my first year of college, I looked back a year later and I said ‘well, she didn’t 00:01:50.170 --> 00:01:57.720 die and so well if she didn’t die and I realized that it’s the right way to go then 00:01:57.720 --> 00:02:03.479 really, what am I so afraid of?’ And I really recognized that as a fear within myself and 00:02:03.479 --> 00:02:09.068 I couldn’t live with this low level fear. It wasn’t a fear for my life, it wasn’t 00:02:09.068 --> 00:02:14.700 a fear for anything, it was a fear of not eating meat and a fear of the social conditioning 00:02:14.700 --> 00:02:22.800 around it so I just kind of faced that fear and I went vegetarian for about 2 or 3 months 00:02:22.800 --> 00:02:27.540 and I attended an animal rights group at the University of Florida where I was going at 00:02:27.540 --> 00:02:33.150 the time called “Animal Activists of Alachua” and saw a few videos and went vegan. 00:02:33.150 --> 00:02:36.620 So, can you talk a little bit about the development of your channel, 00:02:36.620 --> 00:02:41.059 like how did you come to this idea of ‘Alright, I’m going to make a cooking show that is 00:02:41.059 --> 00:02:44.599 like a black metal show at the same time. 00:02:44.599 --> 00:02:49.559 Brian: Yeah, absolutely, the time was three plus years ago, a little more than three years 00:02:49.559 --> 00:02:56.839 ago when the channel first started and I said ‘well, I’ve been vegan for about 14 or 00:02:56.859 --> 00:03:01.709 so years and at that time, I’d been vegan about eleven or so years, well, I’ve been 00:03:01.709 --> 00:03:06.590 vegan for a decent amount of time I think my meals taste awesome, they’re not very 00:03:06.590 --> 00:03:11.559 difficult to make and they’re really cheap and so it’s everything that people think 00:03:11.559 --> 00:03:17.980 veganism isn’t so I said the world needs to know about this in some way. I thought about 00:03:17.980 --> 00:03:23.459 doing a regular cooking show but they kind of put me to sleep so I just really combined 00:03:23.459 --> 00:03:30.459 my passions of music and black metal music in particular with the vegan cooking and made 00:03:30.559 --> 00:03:34.439 the cooking show I wanted to see and luckily a few other people wanted to see it too. 00:03:34.439 --> 00:03:39.239 So I think it’s an interesting marriage between vegan cooking and black metal. 00:03:39.239 --> 00:03:43.900 What would you say, it’s kind of a weird question, what would you say, if veganism 00:03:43.900 --> 00:03:49.309 is metal, and if so, like, I don’t know, do you feel like they converged really well together? 00:03:49.309 --> 00:03:55.489 Well, I think veganism is as metal as fuck, but do they really ultimately have 00:03:55.489 --> 00:04:01.819 anything to do with each other? I guess you can have some sparse connection, ultimately, 00:04:01.819 --> 00:04:10.989 I don't think they necessarily have… especially the black metal music doesn't necessarily 00:04:10.989 --> 00:04:16.269 have anything to do directly with veganism. It’s just the music that I like and the 00:04:16.269 --> 00:04:20.548 show I wanted to see. But veganism is as metal as fuck. That’s good. I‘m glad we got 00:04:20.548 --> 00:04:29.499 that, as noted by many other metal musicians out there already who are vegan. Really? Can 00:04:29.499 --> 00:04:38.170 you like name some of them? Well actually, just in Revolver magazine recently, Alissa 00:04:38.170 --> 00:04:44.620 White-Gluz it either Alisha or Alicia, I always get it wrong, and her boyfriend Doyle from 00:04:44.620 --> 00:04:52.370 The Misfits did a whole section about health and metal eating and she says that Doyle eats 00:04:52.370 --> 00:04:58.930 mostly vegan when I chatted with her and it’s really cool to see the both of them, they 00:04:58.930 --> 00:05:06.290 both workout like crazy and Doyle’s like the biggest dude in existence. Angela Gossow, 00:05:06.300 --> 00:05:12.620 the previous singer of Arch Enemy is also vegan. There’s a number of others here and 00:05:12.620 --> 00:05:18.220 there from the guys from Creator, the bassist of Black Sabbath and a few others. 00:05:18.220 --> 00:05:23.780 If someone came to you and they were just trying to start out on their vegan path, 00:05:23.780 --> 00:05:28.520 what kind of guidance would you give someone about how to become vegan and to stay that 00:05:28.520 --> 00:05:29.030 way. 00:05:29.030 --> 00:05:33.280 Absolutely, well actually, I wrote an entire article about this on my website; 00:05:33.280 --> 00:05:40.090 veganblackmetalchef.com - How to be vegan. It’s just along the little top bar there 00:05:40.090 --> 00:05:48.030 on the website. First off, just start bringing consciousness to your actions if you're not 00:05:48.030 --> 00:05:55.880 vegan currently, you're eating a non-vegan meal. Think about where the meal came from. 00:05:55.880 --> 00:06:03.140 A lot of people go endlessly with ever thinking about these things. And if you want to become 00:06:03.140 --> 00:06:09.800 vegan, there can’t be a struggle with being vegan. There’s no struggle in my life with 00:06:09.800 --> 00:06:12.860 oh - it’s a restrictive life. It’s not a restrictive diet, I haven’t even tried 00:06:12.860 --> 00:06:20.500 all the vegan choices yet. There are so many incredible things to eat. There’s no struggle, 00:06:20.510 --> 00:06:27.350 there’s no cutting out. There’s really an exploration of what plant-based choices 00:06:27.350 --> 00:06:37.250 you can find and can make. And so really, just making consciousness to the meal and 00:06:37.250 --> 00:06:45.420 consciousness to your actions will make you think okay where did this come from or how 00:06:45.420 --> 00:06:54.230 is everything affected by me eating this meal or really the main key on how to stay vegan 00:06:54.240 --> 00:07:02.630 and how to stay vegan is it has to hurt more to eat the meal than it would to not. 00:07:02.630 --> 00:07:06.200 Well I want to thank, Brian you so much for your time. Do you want to tell people 00:07:06.200 --> 00:07:07.580 how to find you? 00:07:07.580 --> 00:07:11.880 Just Google Vegan Black Metal Chef or veganblackmetalchef.com or Vegan Black 00:07:11.880 --> 00:07:13.500 Metal Chef on You Tube. 00:07:13.500 --> 00:07:15.430 Alright. Thank you very much for your time. 00:07:15.430 --> 00:07:16.250 Thank you Emily. 00:07:16.250 --> 00:07:19.639 I don’t know why- I felt like the need to do that. 00:07:19.639 --> 00:07:23.650 Give the video a big thumbs up if you enjoyed hearing from the most metal vegan ever, and 00:07:23.650 --> 00:07:27.940 please share it around to show how hardcore veganism really is.
