0:00:00.265,0:00:03.747 [This talk contains mature content] 0:00:05.008,0:00:06.508 Six years ago, 0:00:06.532,0:00:11.087 I discovered something that scientists[br]have been wanting to know for years. 0:00:11.542,0:00:13.518 How do you capture the attention 0:00:13.542,0:00:16.835 of a roomful of extremely[br]bored teenagers? 0:00:17.875,0:00:21.565 It turns out all you have to do[br]is mention the word pornography. 0:00:21.589,0:00:22.776 (Laughter) 0:00:22.800,0:00:25.093 Let me tell you how I first learned this. 0:00:25.117,0:00:29.156 In 2012, I was sitting in a crowded room[br]full of high school students 0:00:29.180,0:00:31.673 who were attending[br]an after-school program in Boston. 0:00:31.974,0:00:34.220 And my job, as guest speaker for the day, 0:00:34.244,0:00:37.244 was to inspire them to think[br]about how exciting it would be 0:00:37.268,0:00:39.534 to have a career in public health. 0:00:39.982,0:00:41.244 The problem was, 0:00:41.268,0:00:42.926 as I looked at their faces, 0:00:42.950,0:00:45.577 I could see that their eyes[br]were glazing over 0:00:45.601,0:00:47.775 and they were just tuning out. 0:00:47.799,0:00:49.371 It didn't even matter that I wore 0:00:49.395,0:00:53.061 what I thought was[br]my cool outfit that day. 0:00:53.085,0:00:55.085 I was just losing my audience. 0:00:55.587,0:00:59.056 So, then one of the adults[br]who worked for the program said, 0:00:59.080,0:01:01.905 "Aren't you doing some research[br]about pornography? 0:01:01.929,0:01:03.729 Maybe tell them about that." 0:01:04.721,0:01:08.371 All of a sudden, that room[br]full of high school students exploded 0:01:08.395,0:01:10.744 into laughter, high fives, 0:01:10.768,0:01:13.419 I think there were some[br]loud hooting noises. 0:01:13.752,0:01:17.625 And all anyone had done[br]was say that one word - pornography. 0:01:18.141,0:01:20.826 That moment would prove to be[br]an important turning point 0:01:20.850,0:01:23.537 for me and my professional mission[br]of finding solutions 0:01:23.561,0:01:25.828 to end dating and sexual violence. 0:01:26.506,0:01:29.411 At that point, I'd been working[br]for more than a decade 0:01:29.435,0:01:32.628 on this seemingly intractable problem[br]of dating violence. 0:01:32.998,0:01:36.108 Data from the US Centers[br]for Disease Control and Prevention 0:01:36.132,0:01:40.672 demonstrate that one in five[br]high school-attending youth 0:01:40.696,0:01:44.156 experience physical and/or sexual abuse 0:01:44.180,0:01:47.029 by a dating partner each year in the US. 0:01:47.053,0:01:50.177 That makes dating violence more prevalent 0:01:50.201,0:01:52.842 than being bullied on school property, 0:01:52.866,0:01:55.120 seriously considering suicide, 0:01:55.144,0:01:56.501 or even vaping, 0:01:56.525,0:01:58.125 in that same population. 0:01:58.803,0:02:01.176 But solutions were proving elusive. 0:02:01.200,0:02:03.157 And I was working with a research team 0:02:03.181,0:02:06.323 that was hunting for novel[br]answers to the question, 0:02:06.347,0:02:09.616 what's causing dating abuse[br]and how do we stop it? 0:02:10.704,0:02:13.633 One of he research studies[br]that we were working on at the time 0:02:13.657,0:02:16.656 happened to include a few questions[br]about pornography. 0:02:16.680,0:02:19.880 And something unexpected[br]was emerging from our findings. 0:02:20.547,0:02:24.832 Eleven percent of the teen[br]girls in our sample 0:02:24.856,0:02:27.523 reported that they had been[br]forced or threatened 0:02:27.547,0:02:31.365 to do sexual things that[br]the perpetrator saw in pornography. 0:02:32.757,0:02:34.281 That got me curious. 0:02:34.305,0:02:38.614 Was pornography to blame[br]for any percentage of dating violence? 0:02:39.138,0:02:43.026 Or was it more like a coincidence[br]that the pornography users 0:02:43.050,0:02:46.903 also happen to be more unlikely[br]to be in unhealthy relationship? 0:02:47.617,0:02:50.543 I investigated by reading[br]everything that I could, 0:02:50.567,0:02:52.314 from the peer-reviewed literature, 0:02:52.338,0:02:54.352 and by conducting my own research. 0:02:54.749,0:02:55.939 I wanted to know 0:02:55.947,0:02:58.678 what kinds of sexually explicit media[br]youth were watching, 0:02:58.702,0:03:00.434 and how often and why, 0:03:00.458,0:03:02.060 and see if I could piece together 0:03:02.084,0:03:04.806 if it was part of the reason that[br]for so many of them 0:03:04.830,0:03:07.775 dating relationships[br]were apparently unhealthy. 0:03:08.379,0:03:12.037 As I read, I tried to keep an open mind, 0:03:12.061,0:03:14.609 even though there were plenty[br]of members of the public 0:03:14.633,0:03:17.005 who'd already made up[br]their mind about the issue. 0:03:17.331,0:03:21.208 Why would I keep an open mind[br]about pornography? 0:03:21.232,0:03:23.708 Well, I'm a trained social scientist, 0:03:23.732,0:03:26.207 so it's my job to be objective. 0:03:26.748,0:03:29.827 But I'm also what people[br]call sex positive. 0:03:30.188,0:03:33.641 That means that[br]I fully support people's right 0:03:33.665,0:03:38.045 to enjoy whatever kind of sex life[br]and sexuality they find fulfilling, 0:03:38.069,0:03:40.077 no matter what it involves, 0:03:40.101,0:03:43.395 as long as it includes[br]the enthusiastic consent 0:03:43.419,0:03:45.045 of all parties involved. 0:03:45.069,0:03:50.109 That said, I personally wasn't inclined[br]towards watching pornography. 0:03:50.569,0:03:53.331 I'd seen some, didn't really[br]do anything for me. 0:03:53.355,0:03:56.375 And as a mom of two[br]soon to be teenage children, 0:03:56.399,0:03:58.172 I had my own concerns 0:03:58.196,0:04:01.396 about what seeing pornography[br]could do to them. 0:04:02.292,0:04:03.475 I noticed that 0:04:03.499,0:04:06.561 while there were a lot of people[br]who were denouncing pornography, 0:04:06.585,0:04:09.188 there were also people who were[br]staunch defenders of it 0:04:09.212,0:04:10.466 for a variety of reasons. 0:04:10.490,0:04:13.434 So in my scholarly exploration, 0:04:13.458,0:04:16.164 I genuinely tried to understand, 0:04:16.188,0:04:20.309 was pornography bad for you[br]or was it good for you? 0:04:20.635,0:04:24.286 Was it misogynist or was it empowering? 0:04:24.826,0:04:28.928 And there was not one singular answer[br]that emerged clearly. 0:04:29.490,0:04:32.704 There was one longitudinal study[br]that had me really worried, 0:04:32.728,0:04:36.252 that showed that teenagers[br]who saw pornography 0:04:36.276,0:04:39.625 were subsequently more likely[br]to perpetrate sexual violence. 0:04:39.649,0:04:41.188 But the design of the study 0:04:41.212,0:04:44.030 didn't allow for definitive[br]causal conclusions. 0:04:44.474,0:04:47.482 And there were other studies[br]that did not find 0:04:47.506,0:04:49.405 that adolescent pornography use 0:04:49.429,0:04:51.829 was associated with certain[br]negative outcomes. 0:04:52.173,0:04:54.903 Even though there were other studies[br]that did find that. 0:04:54.927,0:04:56.887 But as I spoke to other experts, 0:04:56.911,0:05:01.728 I felt tremendous pressure[br]to pick a side about pornography. 0:05:02.046,0:05:03.846 Join one team or the other. 0:05:04.150,0:05:07.046 I was even told that[br]it was weak-minded of me 0:05:07.070,0:05:11.181 not to be able to pick out the one[br]correct answer about pornography. 0:05:12.053,0:05:13.227 And it was complicated, 0:05:13.251,0:05:16.100 because there is an industry 0:05:16.124,0:05:19.735 that is capitalizing[br]off of audience's fascination 0:05:19.759,0:05:24.506 with seeing women, in particular,[br]not just having sex, 0:05:24.530,0:05:29.061 but being chocked, gagged, slapped, 0:05:29.085,0:05:32.805 spit upon, ejaculated upon, 0:05:32.829,0:05:36.876 called degrading names[br]over and over during sex, 0:05:36.900,0:05:39.321 and not always clearly with their consent. 0:05:39.345,0:05:43.021 Most people would agree[br]that we have a serious problem 0:05:43.045,0:05:47.180 with misogyny, sexual violence[br]and rape in this country, 0:05:47.204,0:05:51.418 and pornography probably[br]isn't helping with any of that. 0:05:51.815,0:05:54.879 And a critically important[br]problem to me was that 0:05:54.903,0:05:56.458 for more than a century, 0:05:56.482,0:06:00.363 the anti-pornography position[br]had been used as a pretext 0:06:00.387,0:06:03.981 for discriminating[br]against gays and lesbians 0:06:04.005,0:06:06.815 or people who have kinks or have fetishes. 0:06:06.839,0:06:08.878 So I could see why, on the one hand, 0:06:08.902,0:06:13.014 we might be very worried about[br]the messages that pornography is sending, 0:06:13.038,0:06:14.371 and on the other hand, 0:06:14.395,0:06:18.096 why we might be really worried[br]about going overboard indicting it. 0:06:18.824,0:06:20.284 For the next two years, 0:06:20.308,0:06:25.032 I looked into every scary,[br]horrifying claim that I could find 0:06:25.056,0:06:29.548 about the average age[br]at which people first see pornography, 0:06:29.572,0:06:33.045 or what it does to their brains[br]or their sexuality. 0:06:33.069,0:06:35.180 Here's what I have to report back. 0:06:35.577,0:06:39.506 The free, online mainstream pornography, 0:06:39.530,0:06:42.141 that's the kind that teenagers[br]are most likely to see, 0:06:42.165,0:06:46.265 is a completely terrible form[br]of sex education. 0:06:46.649,0:06:51.809 (Laughter) 0:06:51.833,0:06:55.654 (Applause) 0:06:56.154,0:06:59.567 But that's not what it was intended for. 0:07:00.480,0:07:05.013 And it probably is not instantly[br]poisoning their minds 0:07:05.037,0:07:07.861 or turning them into compulsive users, 0:07:07.885,0:07:10.790 the way that some ideologues[br]would have you believe. 0:07:10.814,0:07:14.806 It's a rare person who doesn't see[br]some pornography in their youth. 0:07:15.204,0:07:17.490 By the time they're 18 years old, 0:07:17.514,0:07:22.418 93 percent of first year college males[br]and 62 percent of females 0:07:22.442,0:07:24.842 have seen pornography at least once. 0:07:25.228,0:07:26.839 And though people like to say 0:07:26.863,0:07:30.516 that the internet has made[br]pornography ubiquitous, 0:07:30.540,0:07:34.159 or basically guarantees[br]that any young child 0:07:34.183,0:07:38.196 who's handed a smart phone[br]is definitely going to see pornography, 0:07:38.220,0:07:40.022 data don't really support that. 0:07:40.046,0:07:44.418 A nationally representative study[br]found that in the year 2000 0:07:44.442,0:07:47.776 16 percent of 10 to 13-year-old youth 0:07:47.800,0:07:50.847 reported that they'd seen[br]pornography in the past year. 0:07:50.871,0:07:54.047 And by 2010, that figure had increased. 0:07:54.071,0:07:55.605 But only to 30 percent. 0:07:55.968,0:07:57.502 So it wasn't everybody. 0:07:58.198,0:08:02.405 Our problems with adolescents[br]and sexual violence perpetration 0:08:02.429,0:08:04.736 is not only because of pornography. 0:08:04.760,0:08:06.276 In fact, a recent study 0:08:06.300,0:08:09.807 found that adolescents are more likely[br]to see sexualized images 0:08:09.831,0:08:13.059 in other kinds of media[br]besides pornography. 0:08:13.519,0:08:16.473 Think about all those[br]sexualized video games, 0:08:16.497,0:08:19.400 or TV shows or music videos. 0:08:19.424,0:08:24.534 And it could be exposure[br]to a steady stream of violent media 0:08:24.558,0:08:28.709 that instead of or in addition to[br]the sexualized images 0:08:28.733,0:08:30.333 is causing our problems. 0:08:30.654,0:08:36.419 By focusing on the potential harms[br]of pornography alone, 0:08:36.443,0:08:40.023 we may be distracting ourselves[br]from bigger issues. 0:08:40.047,0:08:44.086 Or missing root causes[br]of dating and sexual violence, 0:08:44.110,0:08:46.777 which are the true public health crises. 0:08:47.103,0:08:49.722 That said, even my own research 0:08:49.746,0:08:53.667 demonstrates that adolescents[br]are turning to pornography 0:08:53.691,0:08:56.395 for education and information about sex. 0:08:56.419,0:08:58.761 And that's because they can't find 0:08:58.785,0:09:01.523 reliable and factual[br]information elsewhere. 0:09:01.926,0:09:05.260 Less than 50 percent of the states[br]in the United States 0:09:05.284,0:09:09.085 require that sex education[br]be taught in schools, 0:09:09.109,0:09:11.576 including how to prevent coerced sex. 0:09:12.093,0:09:14.482 And less than half of those states 0:09:14.506,0:09:19.016 require that the information presented[br]be medically accurate. 0:09:20.507,0:09:22.753 So in that Boston after-school program, 0:09:22.777,0:09:24.983 those kids really wanted[br]to talk about sex, 0:09:25.007,0:09:27.522 and they really wanted to talk[br]about pornography. 0:09:27.546,0:09:29.553 And they wanted to talk about those things 0:09:29.577,0:09:33.498 a whole lot more than they wanted[br]to talk about dating or sexual violence. 0:09:33.522,0:09:34.736 So we realized, 0:09:34.760,0:09:39.212 we could cover all of the same topics[br]that we might normally talk about 0:09:39.236,0:09:42.236 under the guise of healthy[br]relationships education, 0:09:42.260,0:09:45.433 like, what's a definition[br]of sexual consent? 0:09:45.457,0:09:49.258 Or, how do you know[br]if you're hurting somebody during sex? 0:09:49.282,0:09:52.743 Or what are healthy boundaries to have[br]when you're flirting? 0:09:52.767,0:09:55.797 All of these same things we could discuss 0:09:55.821,0:09:58.976 by using pornography[br]as the jumping-off point 0:09:59.000,0:10:00.514 for our conversation. 0:10:00.538,0:10:04.450 It's sort of like when adults[br]give kids a desert like brownies, 0:10:04.474,0:10:07.745 but they secretly baked a zucchini[br]or something healthy inside of it. 0:10:07.769,0:10:09.245 (Laughter) 0:10:09.269,0:10:13.052 We could talk to the kids[br]about the healthy stuff, 0:10:13.076,0:10:14.531 the stuff that's good for you, 0:10:14.555,0:10:17.340 but hide it inside a conversation[br]that was about something 0:10:17.364,0:10:19.788 that they thought[br]they wanted to be talking about. 0:10:20.478,0:10:22.046 We also discovered something 0:10:22.046,0:10:24.590 that we didn't necessarily[br]set out to find, 0:10:24.614,0:10:29.260 which is that there's a fantastic way[br]to have a conversation with teenagers 0:10:29.284,0:10:30.484 about pornography. 0:10:30.990,0:10:32.506 And that is, 0:10:32.530,0:10:35.530 keep the conversation true to science. 0:10:35.855,0:10:38.752 Admit what we know and what we don't know 0:10:38.776,0:10:40.935 about the impact of pornography. 0:10:40.959,0:10:44.752 Talk about where there are mixed results 0:10:44.776,0:10:48.776 or where there are weaknesses[br]in the studies that have been conducted. 0:10:49.109,0:10:52.458 Incite the adolescents to become[br]critical consumers 0:10:52.482,0:10:55.086 of the research literature on pornography, 0:10:55.110,0:10:57.157 as well as the pornography itself. 0:10:57.546,0:11:00.855 That really fits[br]with adolescent development. 0:11:01.252,0:11:03.855 Adolescents like to question things 0:11:03.879,0:11:06.673 and they like to be invited[br]to think for themselves. 0:11:07.109,0:11:10.297 And we realized by starting to experiment, 0:11:10.321,0:11:14.288 teaching some classes in consent,[br]respect and pornography, 0:11:14.312,0:11:19.641 that trying to scare adolescents[br]into a particular point of view 0:11:19.665,0:11:25.863 or jam a one-sided argument[br]down their throat about pornography 0:11:25.887,0:11:29.465 not only probably does not work, 0:11:29.489,0:11:33.925 but really doesn't model[br]the kind of respectful, 0:11:33.949,0:11:36.862 consensual behavior[br]that we want them to learn. 0:11:36.886,0:11:41.441 So our approach, what we call[br]pornography literacy, 0:11:41.465,0:11:44.933 is about presenting the truth[br]about pornography 0:11:44.957,0:11:46.885 to the best of our knowledge, 0:11:46.909,0:11:50.350 given that there is[br]an ever-changing evidence base. 0:11:50.665,0:11:55.410 When people hear that we teach[br]a nine-session, 18-hour class 0:11:55.434,0:11:57.712 in pornography literacy to teenagers, 0:11:57.736,0:12:00.511 I think that they either think[br]that we're sitting kids down 0:12:00.535,0:12:03.363 and trying to show them[br]how to watch pornography, 0:12:03.387,0:12:05.722 which is not what we do, 0:12:05.746,0:12:09.117 or that we're part of[br]an anti-pornography activist group 0:12:09.141,0:12:12.249 that's trying to convince them[br]that if they ever saw pornography, 0:12:12.273,0:12:15.135 it would be the number one[br]worst thing for their health ever. 0:12:15.159,0:12:16.685 And that's not it, either. 0:12:16.709,0:12:20.851 Our secret ingredient[br]is that we're non-judgmental. 0:12:20.875,0:12:24.310 We don't think that youth[br]should be watching pornography. 0:12:24.334,0:12:28.866 But, above all, we want them[br]to become critical thinkers 0:12:28.890,0:12:30.690 if and when they do see it. 0:12:31.143,0:12:32.371 And we've learned, 0:12:32.395,0:12:35.863 from the number of requests[br]for our curriculum and our training, 0:12:35.887,0:12:38.601 from across the US and beyond, 0:12:38.625,0:12:42.077 that there are a lot of parents[br]and a lot of teachers 0:12:42.101,0:12:45.680 who really do want to be having[br]these more nuanced 0:12:45.704,0:12:49.283 and realistic conversations[br]with teenagers about pornography. 0:12:49.633,0:12:54.514 We've had requests from Utah to Vermont, 0:12:54.538,0:12:56.815 to Alabama, to Hawaii. 0:12:57.911,0:13:00.490 So in that after-school program, 0:13:00.514,0:13:04.903 what I saw, is that from the minute[br]we mentioned the word pornography, 0:13:04.927,0:13:08.127 those kids were ready to jump in[br]to a back-and-forth 0:13:08.151,0:13:12.126 about what they did[br]and didn't want to see in pornography, 0:13:12.150,0:13:15.642 and what they did[br]and didn't want to do during sex. 0:13:15.666,0:13:18.055 And what was degrading to women 0:13:18.079,0:13:21.302 or unfair to men or racist, all of it. 0:13:21.725,0:13:24.400 And they made some[br]really sophisticated points. 0:13:24.424,0:13:27.979 Exactly the kinds of things that[br]we would want them to be talking about 0:13:28.003,0:13:30.203 as violence prevention activists. 0:13:31.053,0:13:35.537 And as teachers, we might leave[br]the class one day and think, 0:13:35.561,0:13:39.244 "It is really sad that there's[br]that one boy in our class 0:13:39.268,0:13:43.546 who thinks that all women[br]have orgasms from anal sex." 0:13:44.673,0:13:47.915 And we might leave class[br]the next week and think, 0:13:47.939,0:13:52.079 "I'm really glad that there's[br]that one kid in our class who's gay, 0:13:52.103,0:13:57.550 who said that seeing his sexuality[br]represented in pornography 0:13:57.574,0:13:58.724 saved his life." 0:13:59.202,0:14:01.711 Or, "There's that one girl in our class 0:14:01.735,0:14:05.128 who said that she's feeling[br]a lot better about her body, 0:14:05.152,0:14:10.347 because she saw someone shaped like her[br]as the object of desire 0:14:10.371,0:14:12.104 in some tame pornography." 0:14:13.371,0:14:18.513 So this is where I find myself[br]as a violence prevention activist. 0:14:18.537,0:14:21.962 I find myself talking about[br]and researching pornography. 0:14:23.021,0:14:24.482 And though it would be easier 0:14:24.506,0:14:26.823 if things in life were all[br]one way or the other, 0:14:26.847,0:14:30.828 what I've found in my conversations[br]with teenagers about pornography 0:14:30.852,0:14:35.077 is that they remain engaged[br]in these conversations 0:14:35.101,0:14:39.267 because we allow them to grapple[br]with the complexities. 0:14:39.895,0:14:43.173 And because we're honest[br]about the science. 0:14:44.393,0:14:47.346 These adolescents may not be adults yet, 0:14:47.370,0:14:50.139 but they are living in an adult world. 0:14:50.163,0:14:53.362 And they're ready for adult conversations. 0:14:53.944,0:14:55.095 Thank you. 0:14:55.119,0:14:59.143 (Applause)
