NOTE Paragraph 00:02:17.819 --> 00:02:22.434 In 2013, I came back home to Nairobi from Afghanistan. 00:02:22.434 --> 00:02:26.137 Al Shabaab operatives had besieged Westgate shopping center, 00:02:26.137 --> 00:02:31.353 killing 67 people in a day of utter horror. 00:02:31.353 --> 00:02:34.043 Soon after that, 00:02:34.043 --> 00:02:36.696 I could see how Nairobi was beginning to change, 00:02:36.696 --> 00:02:41.660 and it was beginning to feel more like the fear and terror-weary 00:02:41.660 --> 00:02:45.554 and war-torn cities that I had worked in. 00:02:45.554 --> 00:02:49.203 And Nairobi continues to grow in fear-driven ways. 00:02:49.203 --> 00:02:52.015 We see more walls, more barriers, 00:02:52.015 --> 00:02:54.299 more security. 00:02:54.299 --> 00:02:56.081 And like other parts of the world, 00:02:56.081 --> 00:03:00.536 we are experiencing an erosion of human connection. 00:03:00.536 --> 00:03:03.337 Divisions along religious lines are deepening, 00:03:03.337 --> 00:03:08.730 and we're doubting more and more how much we have in common. 00:03:08.730 --> 00:03:11.255 We are at a pivotal time when we need to restore 00:03:11.255 --> 00:03:14.026 our confidence in humanity 00:03:14.026 --> 00:03:17.957 and stand boldly and visibly together.
