00:04:01.366 --> 00:04:04.814 all these things had to be limited and while you are at it, cut calories, 00:04:04.815 --> 00:04:08.164 and that's what people had to adhere to, that's gets old by Wednesday. 00:04:08.165 --> 00:04:12.143 Patients were also given medicines, and they were given needles, 00:04:12.144 --> 00:04:15.792 and instructions on how to stick their fingers and how to inject insulin. 00:04:15.793 --> 00:04:21.082 And despite all of this, diabetes never got better, 00:04:21.083 --> 00:04:23.081 it always progressed, 00:04:23.082 --> 00:04:26.833 and it then became something that we're exporting overseas. 00:04:26.834 --> 00:04:29.702 And when I got out of medical school, we had more medicines, 00:04:29.703 --> 00:04:32.750 and I think we had sharper needles, but to tell you the truth, 00:04:32.751 --> 00:04:35.543 it was the same sort of result, we had unhappy patients, 00:04:35.544 --> 00:04:39.000 and we've never ever cured this disease, it never turned around, 00:04:39.001 --> 00:04:42.257 it was always considered a progressive disease. 00:04:43.709 --> 00:04:48.293 But there are two scientific discoveries that really turned all this around. 00:04:48.294 --> 00:04:50.939 And the first one was taking the widest possible lens. 00:04:50.940 --> 00:04:52.544 If you look around the world, 00:04:52.545 --> 00:04:56.917 at those countries that have the least diabetes, like Japan, for example, 00:04:56.918 --> 00:04:59.126 they weren't following anything 00:04:59.127 --> 00:05:01.499 like the diet we were given to diabetic patients. 00:05:01.500 --> 00:05:04.802 They weren't saying, "I'm not going to eat rice, I won't eat noodles," 00:05:04.803 --> 00:05:09.014 they eat this kind of food all the time, it's front and center on their plate. 00:05:10.125 --> 00:05:14.291 And the second discovery came from looking inside the cell, 00:05:14.292 --> 00:05:15.980 especially the muscle cell. 00:05:15.981 --> 00:05:18.835 And the reason we look at muscle cells in particular 00:05:18.836 --> 00:05:22.335 is that's where glucose is going, that's where blood sugar is going, 00:05:22.336 --> 00:05:25.708 that's the fuel that powers your movement. 00:05:25.709 --> 00:05:28.166 Do you know about a person who's running a marathon? 00:05:28.167 --> 00:05:31.751 What are they doing in the weeks leading up for it? Crawling in and out the window? No. 00:06:10.252 --> 00:06:12.416 I'm going to clean out the lock. 00:06:12.417 --> 00:06:16.430 Well, when a person has diabetes, their insulin key is not working. 00:06:16.431 --> 00:06:19.375 Why would that be?
